Weston ski track is the place where you can go skiing for a light exercise on the trails. There's not a lot of space for the trails, and there's not a lot of hills. But I really liked the service, although there was a cafe that said cafe but it was not a cafe. But otherwise it was nice. read more

For cross-country skiing close to Boston, Weston Ski Track is a great place to go. I've been here twice and already a big fan. It's very easy to get to, minutes from the Mass Pike. They provide the snow as long as it's cold enough. Unfortunately they are at the mercy of the weather, so sometimes their other trails beyond the main loop are not in use. As other reviews have mentioned, it does lean towards beginners. For myself I'm looking to cross country ski for maybe a couple of hours at most and I don't go that fast so Weston Ski Track is perfect for me. They offer a range of lessons for both kids and adults and for classic touring and skating styles. I took a classic touring class recently and had a fun time. The day passes are only $13 and you can purchase them ahead online. They also offer rentals. Plenty of parking, very friendly staff, and helpful signs on where to pick up passes and rentals. read more

I decided to take a vacation day and come here to snowshoe. I'd never snowshoed before and thought it'd be fun to try. The reservation and check in processes were efficient. They rent snowshoes if you don't have them and of course they have xc skis and boots for rent. The trails are nicely groomed. There were a lot of people there but I never once felt crowded. I usually saw people in the distance and a few xc skiiers might pass me, but there was ample space for me to be away from people and for others to distance themselves from others as well. I would like to come back to do a xc skiing lesson and try that. It's a very convenient location, right off the pike a few exits down from Cambridge. They offer evening slots as well, which I'd love to try sometime. They light up the trails. It'd be fun as an after-work activity to get outdoors and get your body moving. read more

I've been to Weston Ski Track a number of times over the years and it is a great resource to have being so close to the city and where I live personally. The main benefit of this place is convenience. It close and easy to get to off the highway (I-90 or I-95). Its also reasonable in terms of price ($15 for a trail pass and $15 for rental). The main downside is the lack of varied and expansive terrain. There's a main section of track with has snowmaking and is generally busy with students and beginners. Its not a bad area but is quite small for skiing for any prolonged period of time unless you enjoy doing laps. The rest of the trails are ok but I definitely enjoy them more than the main loop section. They're wooded and less busy but often has less ideal conditions due to lack of snow or presence of ice. Long story short, go here if you want a quick and convenient outing. If you want better terrain, longer trails or more scenery you'll have to go further out like to Assabett River Refuge, Great Brook or Windblown. And definitely check conditions on their website before heading out. read more

Weston Ski Track makes me wish Boston had harsher winters. When there's good snow cover this place has a great network of very well groomed ski trails. Of course you're in suburbia and not the deep woods, but that's the trade-off to being 20 minutes from Boston. They do have a limited snow-making capacity for a subset of the trails, for the frequent periods when the area lacks natural snow. Be prepared - this place gets very busy on weekends after big snowstorms, so you may want to get here early! Fortunately the trails are extensive enough so that it doesn't feel too crowded. Last time I went the main parking lot was full, but I appreciated that they let you park on nearby streets and ran shuttle vans to take you to the main lodge. Rental and trail pass are about $15 each - their gear seemed well maintained to me and the staff is friendly and helpful about finding you the right sized boots and skis. And they have a decent snack bar, too. read more

One of the great things about owning a pair of cross-country skis is that you can walk out the door on a day like today and go draw lines across a pristine soccer field to your heart's content. It costs nothing, it's great exercise, and you get all sorts of nice ice crystals forming in your beard. But it's also a lot of work; tromping through the snow, making tracks instead of gliding along them, sometimes you just want to move, and to let someone else do the work of breaking a trail. And that's why the Weston Ski Track is awesome. Crisp, clean doubletrack, and smooth skating surfaces on gently rolling terrain. Lit up at night. On the way home from work (for me, and probably a lot of people). They rent skis (and sell the rentals at the end of the season). And if you're really desperate, they'll even make snow for some of their course. Even though it's right at the intersection of 128 and the Pike, it is still peaceful and relaxing, especially at night, when all you see is the glow of the city around you, and occasionally the commuter rail rumbling by. Sure, it's not cheap, especially when you compare the trail fees with someplace like Waterville Valley (on a cost per kilometer basis), but the cost of gas more than makes up the difference. And to offset the exercise, you can hit McDonald's right after you get on 128, too. Not that i've ever done that. read more

Weston Ski Track gets 3 stars basically because it exists as one of the very few places to cross country ski without driving too far from Boston. The snow is mostly man-made, and they do a great job of blowing snow whenever they can to keep as many km of trails covered as possible. Compared to other places I ski, grooming is below average (snow is either sugary or icy), but that is likely because they mostly have artificial snow to deal with. The trails can get crowded since there are only 15 kilometers of trail total, but often only 2-5km open when they have to rely on snowmaking, which is much of the season. Unfortunately, because so much of the season depends on artificial snow and the trails are limited, it's hard not to feel like a hamster on a wheel after about 40 minutes of skiing. Also, the ski trails are on a golf course, which means the terrain is wide open, and can get very windy and cold. You can stand in the middle and see the entirety of the groomed trails. I can't fault WST for the climate they are in and the lack of real snow. They do a great job at providing an option for cross country skiing, where the alternative would be nothing. But I also can't give above 3 stars because the trails are extremely limited and the skiing just isn't very good. WST is fine for beginners who want easy terrain and aren't looking to cover a lot of distance, but for more advanced skiers, it's pretty much the equivalent of training for a marathon by running for hours around a track. read more

You know, whenever I read news stories about "places to ski around Boston" they never include Weston Ski Track! Which is one reason why I didn't know about this place until I was spending a weekend up in Vermont and talking to someone about how I was interested in cross-country skiing, and that person suggested I look them up on the nets. Sadly it was too late in the season to try them out but I got my chance finally on Winter Trails Day, when I signed up for a lesson. And you know, cross country is really fun. Falling on my butt a few times was not fun, but that was mitigated quite a bit thanks to good instruction from Dave, who took about 6 of us through an hour-plus introductory class that taught the basics. What I was really impressed with was that even though it was crazy busy on Winter Trails Day, everybody was friendly, the staff was professional, the skiers all looked happy to be out there and there was none of the "check me out, I'm awesome" schtick that one sees sometimes at downhill ski resorts. I've since purchased a three-day trail pass with rental and went out again last Friday to take advantage of the 2 feet of snow that fell last week. Had even more fun the second time out. I'm getting the hang of turns and sliding downhill although Mount Weston (the big hill on the snowmaking loop) is not in my immediate future. The price is another plus point. $30 is very cheap compared to a rental & lift ticket at most downhill places. Consider that one could spend that for a movie & popcorn. And the payoff for sitting around with a big bucket of popcorn is a bigger ass. Whereas the payoff for sliding around having fun at Weston Ski Track is being in much better shape. read more

Bravo to WST -- Per usual, I insisted on going cross-country skiing a couple weeks ago. Not that I know how to do it. Well-groomed trails, reasonable rentals, a bit hard to get to via public transit but not too bad -- take the T to Riverside and cab or trek it the last mile there. I was really pleased when I looked on the website and read that three weekends in the year they offer free equipment, lessons and trail passes to people who use adaptive ski equipment. That's a serious investment to the disability community and makes me really quite happy to throw my money at them to let me fall down the hill and get run over by a 4 year old skiing prodigy. read more

Keep in mind that today was my first ever time on snow shoes, so Weston Ski Track might not be for hardcore, experienced snow shoers or cross country skiers. We wanted to do something fun and outdoorsy today besides shoveling, so I went online and found Weston Ski Track. We decided to rent snow shoes and spent two plus hours enjoying the beauty of the trails, surrounded by snow covered pine trees. The prices seemed very reasonable, the site was clean and offered well groomed trails. The best part was that we were there in no time from our home in Boston. We are actually thinking of returning tomorrow, it was that much fun and a great workout! If you are looking for a way to enjoy our long New England winters and don't have the time or money to drive to major resorts, a day of cross country skiing or snow shoeing in Weston could be a great option! read more

As a downhill skier for many years, I found it a pretty strange feeling to strap on a pair of XC skis for the first time. So I don't have much frame of reference against other XC ski places, but I enjoyed going to the Weston Ski Track on a 10-degree Monday night. The rentals process was smooth enough. My downhills are longer than most people's cars, and I'm a big bloke, so I'm convinced that even my long XC skis were a smidgeon short. But they fit fine, and I got the hang of no-mountain skiing after 20 minutes of looking like a bozo. Reasonable rates: $90-something dollars for 3 tickets and 3 rentals. My only quibble was that because we started skiing a little after 7pm, the snow was about as fresh and pure as Lance Armstrong's urine sample. But again, it was late, and it was groomed well enough to enjoy it. I think if I was a hardcore, everyday XC skier I'd run out of scenery after a while. But for central MA and especially for someone who's pretty new to the sport, Weston Ski Track is exactly what I'd hoped. read more

Fills the cross-country niche that Blue Hills (Canton, MA) represents for downhill sports. Weston Ski Track, built upon Weston's public golf course during the winter, is ideal for beginner XC skiiers. Admittedly, the mostly flat terrain wasn't too challenging, even to this novice downhill convert, but it doesn't make a lot of sense to drive two hours to New Hampshire in order to suck at skiing. On the upside, Weston's atmosphere is a bit classier and features fewer of the delinquent youths that plague Blue Hills Ski Area, an otherwise excellent place for a beginner snowboarder/skiier to suck at downhill skiing. Trail pass is $15, and touring ski rentals are $15 ($18 for skate skis). Conditions are reasonably groomed, with only a few patches of ice/dirt that are easily avoidable; granted, this has been a pretty good snow year. Avoid the central area during early afternoon to avoid elementary school field trips, which turn trails into human slalom courses. read more

Trail pass=$15 Equipment rentals=$15 For $30 you've got a day of outdoor adventure. Not too shabby! This isn't a total romp through the Weston country-side. It is more like track skiing which is good for beginners and those looking for a good workout. There are some fun little hills to give your stomach a little swirl. When there's a good amount of snow on the ground you can get into some scenic trails that make you feel all woodsy and what not. That said they make most of the snow and keep the trails well-groomed. The rentals seem fairly new and the ski boots are actually very warm. FYI-Your peaceful skiing bliss on a weekday afternoon *might* be interrupted around 3ish for the area high school kids ski practice. read more

Ah, cross-country skiing. A humbling sport. You may think you're relatively graceful and fit, but you'll soon learn otherwise. In all seriousness, I had a great time at this place. They do a good job shepherding you between all of the stations you need to hit: day pass, rental payment and/or lessons, choosing boots, choosing skis/poles. I would allot about half an hour before you want to start skiing or start your lesson if you're renting so you don't feel rushed. The staff was very friendly and skilled. Our teacher, Tom, was great at breaking down the basics. I felt very competent by the end, but still challenged to keep getting better when I went skiing on my own after the lesson. There will still be many beautiful Westonites gliding effortlessly by you while you struggle to regain control of your left foot, which inexplicably keeps drifting away from you, but that's all part of the process. Tom also had a no-late-arrivals policy; I'm not sure if other teachers have this policy, but allowing lots of time before your lesson is a good idea either way. This can get somewhat expensive, but I highly recommend it! read more

The Weston Ski Track is a great place for beginners who want to learn how to cross country ski. Its basically a golf course that they covered with snow for your winter fun enjoyment. BF & I spent the weekend in the area and made it a winter getaway. Day One: Rented some snowshoes and walked about the course. Its fairly large and you can definitely burn a few hours here. I would suggest if you do plan to spend the whole day, bring a picnic with you! We did that and we were able to catch a seat somewhere secluded and have a nice small meal. Snowshoeing is pretty easy, if you can walk, then you can snowshoe. The only downside to doing it at the Weston Ski Track is that its not a lot of snow unless you come here after its snows, otherwise its kind of pointless to have them on but it does grip on the ice nicely. They tell you to take your snowshoes off when you are crossing the road...umm...yeh we disobeyed that rule. Overall, a nice way to spend an afternoon. Day Two: We took a cross country ski lesson and had Dave as our instructor. The class size was small, maybe about 6 or 8 of us. And he gives you each feedback on how you are doing. He was pretty good at teaching you the basics and after you do it for a while, you can get pretty good. The only problem I had was that if you are a slow learner, he doesn't wait for you. But then again, there are other ppl in the class and he can't wait around for everyone. This happened when one of the ladies in the class felt frustrated and didn't want to continue. I ended up waiting back for her trying to encourage her and totally missed the part about how to go downhill. Its my own fault but I just felt so bad leaving her behind while the rest of the group was having fun going downhill. Luckily, my bf caught on quick and was able to show me. The 90 minute lesson thought overall was really good , and after that you have the rest of the day to perfect your skills. The day we were there was a bit icy and so it was very hard for me to keep my balance sometimes or even try to get uphill. But the thrill of going downhill is awesome. The next day I had a huge black and blue mark on my butt.. Ouch! But this had totally turn me into learning how to ski and possibly snowboarding. Price here are pretty modest. We had coupons, so we actually saved a ton of money. Its busy here but there's plenty of room and you never feel crowded. Even with kids around, its not a total zoo. Although it was rather frustrating when kids were skiing better than you were! read more

I went to college in Boston for 4 years and never knew about this wonderful find. I wish I'd known about this place sooner since it is great for cross-county skiing and after a snowfall, some snow-shoeing. The area is actually on a golf course and so you can imagine just how large it is. I've never XC skiied before so this was a unique opportunity to get some much needed exercise. As my friend aptly put it, "it's like exercising...but way more fun." They have little hills which can be challenging for the beginners, but for those of us who know how to ski, these bunny slopes are perfect for a little downhill exhilaration. Not to mention, falling while XC skiing is some of the funniest, slow-motion falling I've ever seen. I recommend bringing a camera for some great blackmail pictures. If you have a group of 10 or more, you can get a 20% discount off of your ski track ticket (savings of around $6), but you need to call ahead and get there before 10am. They have a bathroom, plenty of parking and a small snackbar which serves drinks and baked goods for $2. If you're staying there for the whole day, I would suggest bringing some actual food since their snackbar is exactly what the name suggests - a snack bar. They have some indoor picnic tables where you can sit and enjoy a quick bite before heading back out into the snow. read more

My husband and I just moved to the area, and with all the snow we have gotten this winter, it seemed like a good time to try skiing. I had never put on a pair of skis, but my husband has some experience. They have lessons with online registration (did not take one, but they had plenty of adults so I wouldn't have felt like a fool). For the two of us, it was $60 for rentals and a day of skiing. We trekked around 7 miles, all on groomers, but they had plenty of places next to the groomers where you could ski on the compacted snow for people who know what they are doing. The main loop was busier as the afternoon wore on, but we did not have any "traffic" issues. The terrain is relatively flat with a few (tiny) climbs. The next closest places for something like this is requires going to western Mass or NH. This was great for me to try out something new and unfamiliar. There were families teaching their kids, and I saw a few parents pulling sled carriers for really young kids that you can rent there. They have snowshoes if you want to do that. We left a small lunch box with food and drinks in the car that we retrieved so we did not check out the snack bar. Next time I would plan to bring a small backback to carry water and such. read more

Weston is Great! I have equipment, have experience, want to ski with groomed snow for skate skiing, but cannot go away often. If you can get there, it's a great place for a lovely X-C excursion or workout. I love Jackson, NH, but just cannot go often. Now, Weston is no Jackson, but it's a great local solution. It is so nice to go to a golf course and be able to enjoy the outdoors without have the experience ruined by having to play golf. If you've never tried X-C skiing this is a great place to start. Re: equipment, you need hat, coat, gloves, thermal underwear if it's very cold. You don't ~need~ snow pants (there is always the old standby of skotchguard + denim) but if you're living in New England it's probably worth it to pick up a pair. Sometimes you can get them on sale for $30 and you'll have a much better time. They give you shoes with the skis. read more

This is way overdue, but I bought a Yelp deal for this place a couple years ago. It included a cross country ski lesson, ski rentals, and hot cocoa for two. The cocoa was boring, but the important stuff was really good. Our instructor was full of helpful information, and I'm glad I got to experience some form of skiing finally! It's totally a great place for newbies to start, and they seem to have a nice area to ski around for the not-as-new people, as well. read more

The Weston Ski Track is a convenient place to go for an evening of fun and slipping around on man-made and/or real snow. Apparently they have races on Tuesday nights at 7pm. If you are searching for a family fun day with groomed trails and definite scenery, then this is the place. the spot sits on a public park and recreation golf course and has loads of winding trails through scenic tree lined areas. It runs along the Charles River and is close to the Mass turnpike and major raods off route 95. The trails are fully groomed and there is night skiing as well. The best part is that there are rentals on site of both touring skis and speed skis and even handicap accessible skis. The staff is really helpful and friendly and assist putting skis on and with guiding and there are even lessons. The prices are moderate, for two adults with rentals it was fifty seven dollars for the day. the best part is there are easy and difficult trails and it is great for the kids! read more

Not a bad place to do some training for more hardcore cross-country skiing, but unless you're a true beginner, this place can get boring pretty quickly. It is basically just a ski track that you go around and around on, and there is very little in the way of hills. Still, it can be fun if you go as a family or if you are helping a newbie get a feel for cross-country skiing. read more

Awesome spot. The location is excellent for people who live near the Boston area and want to get out and play in the snow. Weston Ski Track is also well suited to beginners. I went cross country skiing here for the first time ever last winter. I rented all of the necessary equipment here for a reasonable rate. The snow was perfect on that particular day. Because there were a lot of people out, tracks were already in the snow for you to follow on if you wanted to. I enjoyed that, because it's easier to xc ski when you don't have to blaze your own trail! The course has gentle, sloping hills that are excellent for a wide range of ages. I saw families and kids going sledding on one of the few steeper hills. I also enjoyed being able to use techniques I'd learn from downhill skiing on one of the steeper hills. Keep in mind, I'd only gone downhill skiing once before. My favorite part was skiing/shuffling along the narrow, quaint wooden bridge that goes over the river. I won't lie; because it was my first time, I fell down a LOT. Like, 10 times. It was worth it, though! read more

I tried this for the first time this winter. I couldn't walk for two days afterwards but at the time it was really fun. It's great for kids and they are very helpful with understanding the fine art of cross country ski. As other reviews have noted it's very local with is great and is seldom crowded. A A plus. This is not my idea of cross country skiing. I'd rather defer and go up to the Franconia Notch area that be amongst a gazillion people. When I went, it was crowded and icy and did not have enough parking unless you want to be shuttled back and forth from a more remote parking area. The skis they gave as a rental-one of them-I could not easily step into or out of it and this was very frustrating. We stayed an hour and left. I would not recommend to anyone seeking a peaceful, unpressured (by the hoards behind you) trek in the countryside. read more

This review applies to last season. I understand that the state will manage the area this winter and we'll see how that goes. I'm retired and can ski during the week when it's not so crowded. When i get there early, i can be the first one on the newly groomed trails and it's wonderful! Granted, if there's not enough natural snow, you're limited to 2 K of manmade snow, but I am just learning to skate ski and don't need a lot of area to ski when I'm practicing. The grooming is just EXCELLENT and it's a real treat to ski there. I've taken lessons and recommend them highly. The teaching staff is very helpful. I've never rented equipment, so can't comment on that. I just hope the state will do as good a job this season as the previous management has done for many years in the past. read more

Starting this winter (2016) the Weston Ski Track is under new management. This is an updated review. It's now run by the Mass. Department of Conservation and Recreation (DCR). I'm not sure what's happening with the name. There are websites for both Weston Ski Track and Leo J Martin Ski Track (the name of the golf course under the snow). I was told that the original company is still operating the rental shop and lessons program, but I'm not reviewing that part because I have my own skis. I did notice that the new rental gear is nicer than my own... For now I've taken off a star. Hopefully this is just growing pains, and to be fair it has probably been a challenging year with the weather cooperating even less than usual. In spite of the new groomer, there wasn't as much skiable snow as I was expecting when I went on a good snowy day. I think the problem is with the layout. It's been pretty mixed up. Last time I think there may have been a high school race earlier, and then they didn't completely move the cones and fences back to make a normal skiing loop, which is something you need in a small area with a lot of skiers. In order to make a continuous loop, I had to ski over icy ungroomed snow, cut across lines of cones, and slip carefully past lessons in progress. DCR must own a million cones, and they were everywhere. One had been run over and shredded by the groomer, but it probably deserved it. I'd like to see someone -- preferably someone who skis -- make some decisions about the layout and where to run the groomer. None of this ruined my day, but my beginner friends had some difficulty. The smaller fields across the street were wide open and cone-free. On a very positive note, the DCR has made improvements to the buildings and grounds. I heard that they are going to increase snowmaking capacity. Looks like they put in new lights. (This was probably for golf.) They still need to do something about the coffee. read more
