Another Central Glasgow pub. This is the sister pub to the Crystal Palace. If you arrive into Central Station avoid the pubs in the Station and wander across the street to the Sir John Moore, or be even more adventurous and get yourself to the Horseshoe. The Sir John Moore is located down the escalators near Platform 14. Head for the Lower Level trains and go outside rather than further down into the Railway bowels. It has all of the Wetherspoon's characteristics. No music, cheap booze and food but the Sir John moore has Television Screens. A small outside seating area fills up fast but you can snag a table and chairs if you are lucky. . It can become very crowded on the busy days like all of the city centre pubs. The decor is not as pleasant as the Counting House or the Crystal Palace and you could even call it dingy. Service is fast and they deal with the ever-present evening and weekend crowds well. Good launching off point for a group of revelers.

The most centrally located of Wetherspoons, and by that I mean the one that is closest to Glasgow Central. It is probably the most pleasing to the eye, and attracts an older crowd than some other ones such as The Crystal Palace. There's some good comfy seating in here, which is usually easy enough to actually get your hands on (or bum) as it's rarely packed in here. They have outdoor seating as well when the weather is decent (it does happen!). I think the prices in here might actually be fractionally dearer than some of the other branches, or maybe I am going mad. Or maybe I had too many Pitchers the last time I was in.. Perhaps..

Barkeeps were very nice. The menus and tables were a bit grungy - could use a good deep cleaning. I ordered the nachos and they were 'ok', not great. The atmosphere was a nice pub atmosphere with lots of available space to have avoid time with friends. I probably would not go back for food, but would go back to enjoy a couple pints with friends.

Happy customer! The Sir John Moore, Glasgow

Cheap and not too crowded but poor bar service, slow and disinterested. An ok place if you need to nip to the toilet when in town.

It's cozy, crowded, and buzzing with life -- often standing room only and packed shoulder-to-shoulder with locals and travelers alike. If you're a whisky fan (or even just whisky-curious), do yourself a favor and try one of their Scotland whisky flights. It's like taking a mini tour of the country's whisky regions without ever leaving your barstool -- and without worrying about driving. The bartenders really know their stuff and are happy to guide you toward something you'll love. A quick heads-up: no football colors allowed, which keeps the atmosphere friendly and relaxed no matter who you support. And speaking of friendly -- the locals here are as welcoming as they come. This is exactly the kind of place where Scotland's famous pub culture shines. Prices are surprisingly reasonable too, so you can sample a few drams without feeling guilty. Whether you're a seasoned whisky nerd or just looking to experience the local vibe, this is the spot. Pull up a stool (if you can find one) and enjoy a proper Scottish night out

Their selection is so huge they don't have a menu, you just have to ask for your label or take their recommendations. Naturally, most of the selection is Scottish whiskey, but if you somehow prefer otherwise, (say you are a local tired of Scotch... or just want to reaffirm nothing beats a Scotch?) they do offer whiskey from other countries, as well as beer and ciders, as well as gin, rum and the like. They do offer pies and other bar food, but we went after dinner and just couldn't stomach more food, tempting as they may sound.

We had reserved the private dining room downstairs, and had a dedicated bartender, who got us started with drinks. I tried a range of the peaty Islay whiskies, such as the Laphroaig 10, Lagavulin 8, and Lagavulin 16 - which smelled the peatiest but was surprisingly smooth. Once we were seated, we ordered a variety of starters. I tried the crispy fried calamari, hand diced king scallops, Stornoway black pudding croquettes, and Haggis Scotch Egg (my favorite), and then ordered the haggis carbonara (in honor of my Italian friend and colleague Adriano) as my main course. This was an inspired choice as I thoroughly enjoyed it, even though Adriano disapproved as they didn't make it "right!" Nobody else except me wanted dessert - I was curious about the traditional Cranachan (Scottish raspberries, whisky, cream and oats) - which looked delightful, but was more cloying than light and airy. Overall, a memorable experience, partly because of the drink and food, but mostly because I enjoyed the company of colleagues who are quickly becoming friends.

Coincidentally, I had just a few weeks earlier walked past the church (?) and thought that it's pretty cool that you can wander down a side alley and find a pretty lovely square. That's Glasgow for you though I suppose. Our first moment included us waiting at the door to be seated - mind you, the sign specifically says you should go the bar to be seated. Duh, blonde moment. It makes total sense though, the bar staff don't have a view of the door because of the big round pillar in the way. We had a good laugh about it though. Word to the wise though - sitting anywhere close to the door can get rather drafty. Especially when it's cold outside. The place was really busy with a rather eclectic mixture of people - older men, business people and later on some youths who were pretty drunk and relatively inappropriately dressed. Anyways, on to the food. My friend went for the pork and black pudding burger with the fried egg. Be advised that there is chopped bacon in the pork mince and so don't worry about the pink spots. It comes with a side salad and some fries. I myself wen't for the veggie haggis burger (I don't know why) but I do not regret my choice (salad and fries as sides). It was very, very tasty, crumbly and extremely large. The cheese was melty and wonderful but I wish there had been a little sauce of some kind and maybe a little more spice in the burger itself. The fries were on the dull side, bland and semi old and cold. We also shared some onion rings which were pretty tasty. The batter was crisp and not dripping in oil, but it could have done with a stronger flavour I think. We drank some house red, which was mediocre but helped, and at the end, although extremely full, we had some peppermint tea to forego the dessert. The tea comes with some pretty amazing little sweet treat and so dessert was definitely not needed. It's definitely a hidden little gem in Glasgow!

However, situated on the edge of the city's east end, it's hard not to be encapsualted by Cafe Source. Formed in the basement of the truly sumptuous St Andrews in the Square, the cafe/bar is tastefully decorated and is virtually a cocoon in one of the least appealling areas of the city. While football fans could be battering lumps out of each other little more than five minutes away, more sophisticated locals and those in the know are likely to be supping a mojito, enjoying authentic and delicious(although not cheap) Scottish grub and watching a Laurel and Hardy film in here. Were this pub situated in the West End it would probably be unbearable, but so inconspicuous is its location that it maintains an extremely laidback and friendly vibe. The staff, in particular, are excellent. Visitors would be well advised to order a taxi from here if they're leaving late at night, but that shouldn't put them off coming in the first place. This is a lovely venue with some of the best local food on the go. Oh, and if you combine it with a gig in the upstairs venue, you're talking about one of the best word of mouth nights out in the city.
