Spinach and wild mushroom lasagne with toasted Italian olive loaf
    Briony C.

I'm now up to my umpteenth visit to the Lansdowne but this time I'm actually putting up a review while it's fresh in my mind. We popped along last night to the once-monthly wine dinner, featuring a 3 course meal with matching wines for £25 per person. If you haven't been to the Lansdowne before, it can be hard to find as it's in quite a residential area off Great Western Road. Once you're there, you'll feel warm, cosy and at home with lots of booths and comfy seating areas. There is also a glasshouse area out the back that they use for events - I've been in here a few times and the only downside is that they struggle to get the temperature right in here. The dining area is separated from the bar by curtains which make you feel like you're in a living room. We sat in a booth (probably better for 4 people rather than 5) and were greeted with two glasses of wine to accompany the starter, a white and red. The wine aspect of the evening was a brief, non-intrusive chat from Chris from Bibendum Wines about the wines and how they matched the food. I thought he had the perfect balance of telling you enough interesting information without droning on and distracting from the food. After the meal he popped around to each table to see if anyone had questions which was a great idea. For the starter, I had the spinach and wild mushroom lasagne with Italian olive loaf. I also got to eat the poached egg off Graeme's dish (seared lambs' liver with smoked bacon, poached egg and hollandaise) because he doesn't like egg (still baffles me!). The poachy was perfect and I'd eaten it in two or three mouthfuls, I was that excited. My meal looked slightly soupy, which was worrying for a lasagne. But when I dived in, I was delighted by the super umami punch of the wild mushroom which made this a really exciting starter. My only criticism is that the portion size was a bit big - but that really isn't much of a complaint! For mains I went for the braised beef cheek, chorizo dauphinoise with white truffle and mushroom sauce. Again, another dish with a real wow-factor of flavour. The plating perhaps wasn't the most beautiful I've seen, and it would have benefited from a side of green vegetables to cut through the richness. The dauphinoise was moreish and I continued eating until that exploding-full-breaking-point because I just didn't want to stop. Then we moved onto dessert - I had a few bites of the strawberry and mascarpone roulade and that was me finished for the night. It was really lovely but I had just eaten too much. The wine nights are on monthly and it was a really fun event to attend. For the amount of wine you got with your meal (5 small glasses) this was definitely amazing value. I also love sampling wines I wouldn't normally buy or try. I've always enjoyed the food at the Lansdowne and it's pleasing to see them keeping up the high standards!

Aubergine bake (menu changing on the 18th of April)

We were in with friends to watch the Old Firm match one Sunday mid morning. Almost everyone started their morning with a bevvy but a few of us were hoping to score a delicious breakfast. Their breakfast menu looked delicious so we were all thrilled to be here so early to try it out. Our friends had reserved a table and we were able to also sit in some of the little cozy chairs around some coffee tables. We headed up to the bar to order drinks, but to also make sure they were serving breakfast. To our dismay, they were only serving lunch, and it was the old menu as they were introducing a new menu that following monday. We weren't too thrilled about the options on the old menu- lots of stodgy plates and home cooked type meals, but the few of us who ate found something we thought we would like. The bar maids were run off their feet as the crowds were quite demanding of their booze to watch the match so I was handed a pad of paper and a pen to write down our order for drinks. No bother, we got our drinks, ordered some food and went back to join our friends. My guy and I both ordered the fish finger sandwich. Sounded nice came on ciabatta bread with chips. It was ok. The fish was a little too greasy for my liking, but tasty none the less. My friends (one veg, one not veg) both ordered the aubergine bake and some bruchetta. They said their food was good, but the aubergine bake was like a kid sized portion (which is why we went down the road for some baked goods. See: Cottonrake review.) All in all, Lansdowne is a great place to watch sports and to have some good laughs over some pints. I'm interested in trying out their new menu, shame we missed it by one day. Great atmosphere, no footie colours.

It's cozy, crowded, and buzzing with life -- often standing room only and packed shoulder-to-shoulder with locals and travelers alike. If you're a whisky fan (or even just whisky-curious), do yourself a favor and try one of their Scotland whisky flights. It's like taking a mini tour of the country's whisky regions without ever leaving your barstool -- and without worrying about driving. The bartenders really know their stuff and are happy to guide you toward something you'll love. A quick heads-up: no football colors allowed, which keeps the atmosphere friendly and relaxed no matter who you support. And speaking of friendly -- the locals here are as welcoming as they come. This is exactly the kind of place where Scotland's famous pub culture shines. Prices are surprisingly reasonable too, so you can sample a few drams without feeling guilty. Whether you're a seasoned whisky nerd or just looking to experience the local vibe, this is the spot. Pull up a stool (if you can find one) and enjoy a proper Scottish night out

Their selection is so huge they don't have a menu, you just have to ask for your label or take their recommendations. Naturally, most of the selection is Scottish whiskey, but if you somehow prefer otherwise, (say you are a local tired of Scotch... or just want to reaffirm nothing beats a Scotch?) they do offer whiskey from other countries, as well as beer and ciders, as well as gin, rum and the like. They do offer pies and other bar food, but we went after dinner and just couldn't stomach more food, tempting as they may sound.

It is not located in the hip touristy area next to Planet Hollywood. It is a small unassuming pub in a working class neighborhood. We walked from Glasgow University (looks like Hogwarts) which turned out to be a longer walk than Google made it seem. It was cold and drizzly just like Scotland should be so when we got there we were ready. We didn't have reservations but they were extremely nice and sat us down. This is a Pub. Just what you are picturing in your head right now. Dark, lots of dark wood, old crumbling bricks. I love this decor. We started with a couple of appetizers I ordered the Salmon Tartar and my wife ordered the smoked duck breast. I ordered a cold pint my wife had a glass of white wine. We decided to also have a half dozen local oysters. The waitress asked if we were expecting someone else. I guess 3 appetizers is not normal for 2. We were just getting started. Once we demolished all 3 appetizers I followed up with the Pan Seared Gigha Halibut my wife had the steamed Shetland Mussels. What a treat. All the seafood is local and very fresh. All of our dishes from beginning to end were tops. A truly historic dining experience from a historic eatery. In Glasgow then GO...... to The Finnieston. See what I did there. BTW we also had dessert.

Well, they did give us a splendiferous spread with copious plates of delicious food to try. In January they had a Winter Sale on with some meals available at £4 and £5 so decided to take advantage of this with my bestie and fellow Yelper Angela B. As a result I ended up with a taste tantalising wee mac and cheese topped with bacon bits including a wee bucket of chips. Not bad for a fiver. Boom! I've also frequented for drinks and they have an excellent bar selection, there's even some cheeky fruit beers in there. Yay! I would highly recommend popping in for a wee swally or a sit down meal within the designated dinning area. It's pretty, it's relaxing and the music is pretty good with some 90's indie beats to tickle your ear drums. Other music probably plays at other times. It's also bang smack right in the middle of town so super handy but ladies beware of the icy blast of the hand-drier in the toilets. Ice burns beware! Please note, not in the Urban Dictionary sense. I opted for the taster plank - 1 third of a pint of three different ales, served in a plank with the beer names written on. That in itself is a great touch, a few places don't identify which beer is which. I had a Casear Augustus from Williams Brothers, a Fake Lager from Brewdog and a Witless IV from Red Willow Brewery - as you can see, there's a great range to choose from and the staff were really helpful and knowledgeable about them all. While I was looking around and supping my drinks (the Witless was the pick of the bunch, fact fans!) I noticed the menu. I knew that The Raven were offering food, but wasn't too sure what. Looking at the menu, it looked pretty nifty so I figured I'd just eat here, and I was glad I did! The food is BBQ based - low and slow smoked pork, burgers, ribs, that sort of thing. There's been an explosion of this kind of food in Glasgow recently, I perhaps lay the blame at the feet of Adam Richman and Man vs. Food (my dream job too, it has to be said) but I'm not complaining! I opted for a pulled pork burrito with a side of spicy cheesy fries, and at £9 for the two, it was a steal. They arrived quickly, the fries in a basket and the burrito served on a platter. I was given cutlery before the food arrived, and what looked like a carrying case full of sauces, salt, pepper, kitchen roll and a great sight, a wet wipe! A great thing to have when eating what is esssentially finger food! There wasn't a long wait at all for the food; The burrito was lovely, really filled to the brim and fresh - but the spicy cheesy fries were stunning. Covered in jalapenos, cheese and a smoky, spicy BBQ sauce, they were quickly devoured. I could honestly have had a second helping of those on their own. A great first impression here, not just for the great food, but for the really helpful and friendly staff, and the attention to detail that the whole place shows. It's somewhere that I can see me returning to time and time again.
