So I've contemplated writing a review for this bar because times are challenging during a world wide pandemic and businesses are struggling and I'm sure it's been a challenge for the Silver Fox. But I have to say I was so looking forward to coming back to this favorite neighborhood bar, after the closures. I'm a transplant from out of state and when I first came to Long Beach, the Silver Fox was the first Gay bars I came to. Needless, to say - it was just a bad experience ... not so much because of the "new" set up but the fact we were seated outside on their patio. Mind you, it sounds nice - right? A nice lovely patio to have a cocktail with friends and just lose ourselves for a moment during challenging times. Well, to put it bluntly ... the outside patio is disgusting. All around you see dirty walls, dirty $1 dollar plastic tables and chairs, dirty as can be ash trays. I mean their patio is just not the best place to hang out. I get it, they are forced to seat people only outside but the question I have is what the hell have they been doing the whole time the bar has been closed?! You'd think knowing they'd have to sit people outside - they'd at least spruce up the patio to be welcoming to their guest and hec, it'd be a kind gesture to show appreciation to the people that have kept them in business. I was with a group of people and we all had the same feelings about this. It just felt gross. The patio is so bad - is this a reflection of what they think and feel about their patrons?!?! They literally have the same plastic tables and chairs you could probably buy at a discount store - honestly, it wouldn't be so bad if they weren't as gross and dirty as they are - clean them up or how about investing just a little money to show your guests ... Welcome Back. Finances can be tight for bars - I understand that but at least clean up the patio, plant flowers, add some overhead lights. That's all fairly inexpensive. This place is A-Ok, but one experience stands out the most and they get 2 stars for it. The bar allows people to bring in outside food. I walk in with a frosty from Wendy's and the bouncer doesn't stop me. However, I walk past the bartender and he tells me I can't bring it in. He gives me a whole speech about bringing in liquids into bars and that they aren't allowed. I would of been OK with that, but what pissed me off was that he allowed my friend with his drink cup to come right on in. I brought in ice cream and my friend had soda. I don't know what the difference between the two is but I was the only one asked to finish it outside. I was not a happy camper. Other than that, they make OK drinks and they do have an interesting music selection. On select days, Sundays and Wednesdays, they do karaoke after 9 pm. Plus, they do sell jello shots for $2. So, bring in cash. However, they are not sold all day/night and maybe only on select nights as well. They do have a smoking section outside in the back with chairs and tables. read more

I love me some karaoke, but for some reason karaoke at The Fox doesn't really ring my bell. But, I do enjoy a good happy hour at The Silver Fox. I mean, first of all, drinks are dirt-cheap, and on Tuesdays they are buy one, get one for $.25. You really can't find a better deal than that in all of Long Beach. The bartenders are always quite jolly and friendly. And if you're behind on your pop music, there's no shortage of all the pop music (along with videos) that you've been missing. Like I said, I'm not much for the karaoke nights, but if you are willing to sing you do get a discount on your drinks that night too. Looking for a decent and cheap happy hour though and up for being the odd woman out in a gay bar for an afternoon? Well, then the Fox is your place. read more

WTF was I thinking. Strike One: It's in Long Beach "the New Jersey of the West Coast." Strike Two: Videos from 1997. 1987 is nostalgia. 1977 is classic. 1997 is tragic. Strike Three: A clientèle from 1997. See Strike Two. So I don't mind a dive bar. In fact, I LOVE dive bars. But a dive bar with pretensions to be anything other than a dive bar is insufferable. And large screen videos are just such a pretension. And I don't mind neighborhood bars, as long as they're in my neighboorhood. Because the only reason you go to a neighborhood bar is so you can walk home if you're too trashed to drive. But a LONG BEACH neighborhood bar? Double oy. My friend SWORE to me that there would be hot guys here. It was only later that I discovered the last time he was here, he was on his third Manhattan. I was definitely the hottest guy there which is pretty sad considering I'm WAYYY past my prime, but hey, at least I don't smell like formaldehyde and grecian formula. I haven't seen so many pleated Dockers in one place since I mistakenly wandered into the break room of the local Mercury Auto Insurance brokerage. And yeah, the Czech bartender isn't bad looking, but the poor guy literally had his chin in both hands, elbows resting on the bar, with a look on this face that I could see the little cartoon bubble rising from his brain that said "You mean to tell me I left Prague for THIS PLACE." Ah, the Silver Fox. With its glamours Art Deco facade it looks like it'd be a really fancy joint inside too, but it's not, lol. That said, it doesn't mean it's all shabby or anything inside--it's clean and quite roomy. I've been several times and it's a fun place to hang out. The last time I was there there was quite a dance party in effect! The bartenders are always friendly, and as with most bars in Long Beach, the drinks are stiff. Ah the Fox! Where should I start? The lighting is really bright for a gay bar. Really bright. The strippers on stripper night were not the most attractive in the world and I have a pretty liberal definition of attractive. They do have a great side covered smoking patio where you can go out and get some air. Plenty of chairs, tables, and christmas lighting that lets you escape the floodlamps inside for a while. This bar plays "sets" of clips of TV comedy scenes and regular music all controlled by a "VJ" as most of the items are all stored on a computer playlist and he really just sits there and hunts and clicks. Bar service while friendly can be slow at times. Bartenders wear white tuxedo shirts and bow ties. Some folks call this the "grey fox" as some nights the clientle tends to skew towards the older 50+ side. The bar was full of pretty people and people who could just not stop bragging on themselves on my last visit. Luckily I brought my own group of friends along so the visit was tolerable. Besides the lighting I have to agree with Raphael M. here. The outside was recently? (2004-5?) redone. They could have spent some of that money on the inside. And the rainbow carpeting? I wanted to barf a rainbow. It's an OK bar but there are better, more relaxed choices in Long Beach. Especially if you head to the "dirty North." Be advised that this is Long Beach. Parking sucks. Parking is basically non-existent as you compete with the locals for residential parking or get there after the gas station on the corner closes and you can be one of the lucky ones to get a priority space there before it fills up. read more

Ah yes The Silver Fox or, as I like to refer to it as "the Abbey II" (read my review of The Abbey) the ONLY good things going for this place are 3 bartenders of whom I like; Scotty, George & John...no not that dork of a manager...the older gent who has been there for years! Last time I was at this place was after a Christmas party last year and, it was under protest. The seating is terrible unless you like sitting on stools with no backs or at a bar that should have customers' names engraved since they make it very clear who these chairs are for! You can't take your cocktails outside on the patio which makes it terrible because this place gets way to crowded! Also, who is the guy that thinks he can sing?! I believe it is on Thursdays or Mondays but give him some keys and tell him to find one! Heartbroken over recent events in my life, I needed some place local to dance away my feelings. Yes, I said dance away my feelings. After years of taking interpretive dancing/ ballet in high school (it was either dance or regular p.e. in the hot sun...yeah, I chose right suckers) and a quarter during college, I knew dancing would make life a little bit better. Anyhow, after a night of drinking and still feeling like crap, I asked my companions if we could head over to the Silver Fox since I had never been. Even if you're not the brightest crayon in the box, I think you understand the point (and the rest of my review): I had the time of my life at the Silver Fox (well, the night I went). How? Well, for a straight woman, it's very difficult to find a night spot where you can dance the night away without having creepers bugging, following, or just in general being gross toward you and your friends. So coming to a GAY bar to dance (in peace) is HEAVEN. HEAVEN I TELL YOU! (But I already knew this). I'm not done. I've established that night clubs are a pain in the butt for women because of the creepers. The second reason why night clubs are horrible? Most of the guys can't dance. Some guys will come up to you and do the weird well, I'm not sure how to explain it, but I think some, no most of you understand where I was going with that or are just overly aggressive and again back to point one: creepy. Anyway, going back to my original point, "Coming to a GAY bar to dance is HEAVEN!" (Going back to the youtube video) I met my chocolate Patrick Swayze the night I went. It was beautiful. There was a stage, there was just us two dancing, totally platonic, choreographed, er, un-choreographed--oh, improvised! It was just ridiculous amounts of fun. I hope my chocolate Patrick Swayze (I think he's the DJ there) saw me as his caramel or olive-toned Jennifer Grey. After my zumba session with Patrick Swayze was over and it was time to go, one of my group members met a friend...a lady friend. ...Folks, patrons of the Silver Fox, please avoid the Jamaican lady that comes here. She's a gold digger! Or lady of the night...I'm not sure. She's just too high class. Story Time (again!). The Jamaican lady follows one of our group members outside (he's a straight male, she knows this) she asks him, "Where is your car so we can go back to your place? (say this in a Jamaican accents please)" He goes, "Oh, I parked my bike on the other side of the street." After realizing that there was no luxurious car ride back to his place, she yells (again in a Jamaican accent), "UH BIKE, UH BIKE?!" and walks away. Jeez lady. Okay, I'm almost done. The only thing that I can say I didn't like about the Silver Fox: the restroom. I don't even...I can't even talk about it. The end. Thank you for reading this short story. P.S. They say a business succeeds on location/location/location. In the gay bar scene, it's definitely in the "theme nights". Who has the best specials and the best looking clientele on any given night? Check the calendar, and in the Long Beach bar scene there isn't much overlap. For the Silver Fox, it's Wednesday and Sunday karaoke. After 10:30p.m. the other bars in town will be nearly empty. Get on their mailing list and you'll get the lowdown on their many other theme parties which can be quite fun. For the summer, it's free bar-b-que on Sunday afternoons and an occassional weekday night of strippers sponsored by some alcohol vendor pushing their latest flavor of the month. Party buses to live shows and Pride Fest in L.A., and Sunset Junction. You get the idea. And I haven't missed a December "Toys for Tots" party here in many years. If you like to support a bar who supports its community, spend your gay dollars here. The locals call it an "S&M bar" which isn't what you may think. This is definitely a "Stand and Model" bar, but the layout is good, the patio is a nice touch, and they have free appetizers and food frequently. John, the bar manager is quite the gourmet and he has a full kitchen! Ignore the name of this place, too. I guess it's a tribute to the gray haired owner. Most nights it's 25-40 somethings plus the local boys from CSULB. So, the deal at this place is Wednesday, Sunday, or any special event. Oh, and on your birthday, a free bottle of wine. Yes, I did it. I gave The Fox five stars. Here's why: The Silver Fox was my first 21 and over gay bar. I spent my 21st birthday in 2002 there and have been a regular patron ever since. For seven years, The Fox has been my gay Cheers. The part of Sam is played by John Barnes, the always friendly and heavy handed bar manager. Honzi, the European expat bartender is Woody. And Felix, the small but muscular, is of course Rhea Pearlman. It's a friendly place where most everyone knows my name, even if I don't care to know theirs. Great music and funny videos. Always a handful of cuties. And a comfortable air that is a nice break from the judgmental glare-athon that is West Hollywood. Tuesdays host two for one drinks, Wednesday and Sunday get your karaoke on, and Friday and Saturday offer a bustling alternative to the Long Beach dance clubs IE. Boy's Room or Boy Bar. So, if you haven't given The Fox a chance, I suggest you do so. It may look like Big Lot's threw up inside, but at least after two drinks, you'll be too drunk to care. read more

The liquor at the Silver Fox is well priced for what you get; the drink's strength however will depend on what bartender makes it. I prefer my drinks a little more on the hard side and I've been disappointed more then once. But they do have a decent selection of booze, but no Jameson... alas... I also like how the Fox does more with the local gay community then most bars I've seen. They have a float in the LB Pride, they charter buses to other GLBT events, toy drives and various charities and I even seen the owner there frequently talking and interacting with the clientele. The Silver Fox defiantly also have a lot of other things going for it: . Karaoke nights every Wednesdays and Sundays (I like Sundays better, gets a diverse crowd. But be fore warned on three day weekends, it will get packed) . Two for Tuesdays (Love that night) But the lighting is a little on the bright side and the carpet screams Gay Pride all over it (And all about that, but even I have a limit) Parking can also be a bit of a hassle too. read more

I am always a fan for attention-grabbing names. Although this name almost turned me away- just almost. Walk in and you immediately find the bar situated in front of you, as if to say "Drink me now!" Well, of course I will! On Wednesday nights, they gave half-priced drinks to... wait for it... karaoke singers! Yes, people, there was karaoke available and ready for the patrons. And what a delightful way to get people to sing and drink. The Silver Fox has one rule that sort of caught me off guard- you cannot bring alcohol outside. I am not sure if that is a Long Beach city ordinance thing or not, but it was a bit off-putting. My friends wanted to go smoke outside, but I could not join them because I had two Jack and Cokes waiting for me to down. Other than that, the crowd was a bit pleasing. The name of course gives the innuendo of the place full of aged 50+ men (which I wouldn't mind there existing one), but the people were age, race, and gender diversified. The Fox is always great! It's right down the street so walking after drinking will get me to add a star, no control of theirs. The drinks are STRONG for pretty alright prices, the karaoke on Sundays is fun and usually packed. I guess Friday nights are not all that happnin'...but every other night seems to be...any time after about 10pm! I know it's predominantly a gay bar but I'm not...and my friends who aren't go there as well and it's always a great time! My pursuit of the happy hour is relentless ... and a recent recommendation brought me to the Silver Fox. They offer a great buy one drink, get the second for a quarter special on Tuesdays (don't forget to use the card!). Met a group of friends here and was a bit hesitant because of the appearance of the Silver Fox from the outside, but once I settled in I had a fantastic time thanks to the super fun and friendly bartenders, patrons (met several really funny people here), and music that kept the energy in the place up. Smoking patio out back is pretty spacious though you can't bring your drinks out, and since it next to a residential area there are signs posted up to keep it down. Only other downer is that the street parking sucks and the mechanic / lube place across the street is a bit sketch. read more

I have mixed feelings about this place, but the night was good enough here that I'll probably return. As a straight girl out with her gay male friend, I found the bartenders, security and the patrons there to be friendly. HUGE plus. The line between a good night out and horrible one often lies with the strangers you come across. For the drinks: all we bought were beers, but again, friendly bartenders always make things fun! Sure they flirt more with the men, but it's a part of the job. Bring cash, it'll make everything easier, (and is more wallet friendly cuz the ATM charges) The clientele: a couple silver foxes, a couple college-aged men, and a couple girls (gay or straight I don't know). The majority of the crowd was teetering between 30 and 50, some on dates, others with their eyes plastered to Madonna circa 1992. Which brings me to the music: Cyndi Lauper and Janet Jackson's greatest hits on the screens with the Pussycat Dolls and current Coldplay. Say what you say, but I like the music. The bathrooms: I didn't go in, but they're passeable. All in all, the fox is a pretty intimate place- if you're out to meet new friends, stay near the bar, if you're looking for a lil privacy, they have a secluded table or two. It's not THE place to be, but if you're looking for a night out but not looking to get crazy, I say this place is a good standby. read more

Long Beach is not exactly a bed of hot clubs, so I would say considering the gay scene we have to live with here its not bad. The crowd is mostly 25-45 in spite of what the name might suggest. The drinks will do the job, there is a decent patio if you need some "air". Since I dont smoke, its really like an ash tray, but what gay bar is not. The front facade was done a few years ago, but I am still waiting for a real design for the interior that is not just paint and carpet. Bartenders are a little slow and forgetful, even with cash in hand. The Karaoke is really tired, come on people, Britney Shears you are NOT. This place has its ups and downs like most bars. For a simple night out with your besties, this is a great place to grab a couple of chairs and chat, catch up and watch some videos from 1995. Pro: Two for Tuesdays. First drink costs, second drink is free. Need I say more? Con: The lighting is a bit dark, but the decor screams cheesy love motel. Pro: The drinks are always strong, the bartenders are givers. Tip well. Con: The random reel of "Guys Gone Wild" videos they play to bad techno music. I have gone with a couple of girl friends and we are all straight.. lookng for a night out with drinks and no hassles. IT does NOT cater to an older crowd. It does not have attitude. What I do see are customers with chips on thier shoulders..... thier own issues looking for reasons ot bitch. I myself have had many glasses of fine conac here and the bartender did pay as much atten to the straight gals as he did the "boys". So this insomniac has decided to write a review at 6:30am...lol First visit to this place was Friday the 13th...ooo scary i know!!! i was looking for a place to unwind after work late night. So i picked up my friend and he suggested we head down to Silver Fox. So the adventure begins!!! I was eager to try some place new to me! We arrived around 12:00 am Saturday and once through the doors i was surprised the place wasn't packed. My friend explained it was hit and miss with a large crowd here but i didn't mind since i was just looking for somewhere to unwind. They had a Dj playing 90's and 80's music that night (which i LOVE!!) The decor was inviting and they have friendly bartenders. The feel of the crowd was...mature that night and i appreciated it . I did not feel like being a a club/bar with smoke machines, lasers and unfriendly security/servers/bartenders like SOME places in the area. Oh and i forgot to mention. I praise this place for not having a horrid stench emanating from the washroom that is something that sadly comes with the territory of visiting a bar on a Friday night like SOME places down the street *cough Hamburger *cough Mary's oh! One more thing i should mention It looks like this place doesn't use a point of sale system that allows gratuity to be added after ringing up a sale on a check card and they cannot ring up cards as credit. Sorry i know..im a geek w/electronics and silly useless stuff like that. I thought it was odd that we were asked if we needed cash back and if you say now you look like a stingy person that doesn't tip lol. It has been a while since I have been here and since I have been really busy with work the past few days, I thought I would jump in and write my feelings on this bar. Interesting crowd, to say the least...20 to 50 somethings...a bit of attitude (which I completely do NOT understand) a small outdoor patio for the smokers...nice enough bartenders (they pour a decent drink too!) and they really try to get to you quickly (which is always a plus when one wants a drink). Back to the customers...do I have too? Yes, I have too! This is Long Beach folks...NOT West Hollywood...what is with the attitude? Every time I come here it is the same BS...snotty little 20 somethings looking for a one night stand (good luck!)... 30 somethings just looking for anything they can get and 40 and 50 somethings hoping for anything that will get them laid...and if not, just sitting around, or standing, drinking themselves to death...sad... On the brighter side (?), I only go here with friends...this way I am assured that someone will at least talk to me while I am there...I did go (once) by myself...big mistake...I was here for about 3 hours (why I do not know) and the only person that talked to me was the bartender, when he wasn't busy. Listen, folks, I am a very friendly guy and I love a good conversation but, this is not the place for that (I guess). It is simply my favorite spot for drinks, music, and conversation. I was also there the night jennifer p had her incident. When the other customer discovered her wallet was missing we ALL were asked if we had seen it. Jennifer P had walked out front and the bartender went to ask her about it. She then exploded. We could hear her yelling inside the bar. The girl who's wallet was missing told the bartender to let it go and everyone returned inside. About a minute later jennifer p came back into the bar to confront the other girl. The bartender asked her to leave while she continued to scream expletives. She refused to leave and then slapped the bartender across the face. Nobody chased her out. When you assault someone, you will be escorted out. No questions. And yes, she should be embarrassed by her actions. That said, this was not a normal night at the Silver Fox. It usually goes like this: daily happy hour prices are cheap and the drinks are stiffer than anything you'll find in Weho. There's a birthday jackpot drawing at 7pm every night. I've won it once and got almost $300! Karaoke on Sundays & Wednesdays can get quite packed. Tuesdays are the best day for drinks because they are 2-for-1 all night long. DJs on Friday & Saturday and dancing sometimes happens when the right group of people are there. Holiday parties are always busy especially Halloween & Christmas. For Christmas there is a huge (free) buffet for all customers that donate toys to Toys 4 Tots. And unlike many other LB bars, parking is available in the lot across the street. I find it funny that a lot of reviews say this is a bar for older men. I guess if most of those Yelpers are 21-25 then yes, there are "older" men here. I've been a customer since my early 30s and have made many friends here. Yes the carpet is "colorful", yes the bathrooms are ready for an update, and yes sometimes the A/C needs to be turned on full blast. More importantly, for me, the people there are good people.
