11 course tasting menu by guest chef Avner Guzman
    Jenn S.

I love French cuisine and try to eat it every chance I get. So of course I hopped on the reservation wagon when restaurant Five Fifty decided to host an 11 course tasting menu event with guest chef Avner Guzman visiting from France at the helm.  11 courses were promised and 11 were expertly executed as well. Being that tonight was the first night, communication between the servers and kitchen was a bit lacking so that needs to be streamlined better. The owner, managers and staff were very accommodating and apologetic as well so I was happy to see that nobody was delusioned in thinking everything was just smooth sailing. Regardless,  all the servers were really friendly and warm and tried their utmost best to be as attentive and helpful to each table of guests.  Each dish had its own unique flare to them.  The evening menu was split into 3 parts, 5 small plates for the first course, 5 small plates for the second course and a surprise dessert.  So if you've never experienced true French cuisine some of the techniques and food preparation will be lost to you. Our table suggested to chef and the restaurant owner that for the next two seatings they should have him explain each to the crowd before they serve it. Out of 11 dishes only maybe two were not their best but we won't be talking about those today. Chef put in a lot of effort to try and implement classic pairings like in his unctuous lamb confit on top of aligot: a pureed potato dish that has the consistency of gooey cheese,  which is achieved by ricing the hot potato and gradually adding butter,  milk and cheese while aerating the hot potato mix. But for obvious reasons,  that technique was not used this night. So to the untrained palate the potato accompaniment would seem to be gummy and over-processed. Not sure how Chef did it,  but his preparation for aligot tonight was perfectly spot on. The Foie gras on a sliced toasted baguette with the delicious mango and papaya chutneys was outstanding, however the foie gras terrine was not prepared by chef nor in-house and was quite disappointing. Salmon tartare was not heavily cured so made for a nice light dish. Seared cod encrusted in black olive packed a ton of flavor in the dish.  The duck breast was seared to a beautiful medium rare, and the steak pensille was seared to a gorgeous ruby rare. I'm not a fan of white chicken meat but tonight chef 's version was flavorful and very tender.  I really appreciated that dessert was kept very simple and light and used the accompanying yet contrasting flavors textures of both fruit and vegetable.  The meal was truly reminiscent of a lot of the great meals I've had in France proper and I will definitely be back soon to try Five Fifty's regular menu as well!

Came here on a Sunday afternoon with a group of nine and were seated upstairs where there is waiter…read moreservice. The menu is extensive and offered so many things that we wanted to try, so we did and shared. Buffalo wings - spicy, hot and delicious. Left us licking our fingers (good thing there was no one else seated upstairs at that time); Chicken whiskey club and hot roast beef sandwiches - served on your choice of bread with cole slaw, pickle chips and choice of one hot side dish (we ordered the roasted sweet potato (which was amazing!) and mashed potatoes with gravy); 1/2 wood-smoked Chicken dinner - comes with pickle chips, pickled red onion (whenever something came with pickled red onion, I called dibs on the onions) and choice of one hot and one cold side dish; House Burger - chargrilled, and billed as containing fresh ground brisket and short rib, and served with lettuce, tomato, onion, pickle, thousand island dressing (could have done without the dressing or having it on the side), cole slaw, pickle chips and one hot side (pit-smoked beans); Asian BBQ Crunch (a salad, I know, who orders a salad in a BBQ joint (okay, this isn't a "joint")?) - contains grilled chicken and the greens and other veggies tasted fresh and crunchy. The dressing, a sesame ginger vinaigrette, was tasty and not cloyingly sweet; Korean BBQ Beef Rice Bowl - looked delicious, but I didn't have a chance to sample it. Other dishes were ordered and a dessert (too stuffed to try the dessert), and the bill was not astronomical. Definitely a keeper for kosher and/or smokehouse-craving dining.

Insane!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I can't believe this is kosher…read more Hands down one of the best barbecue restaurants I've ever had. They have actual good quality service is great as well. It's worth the drive if it's a little bit out of your way I drove one hour to come try this place out and was definitely worth it 10 out of 10. I wish I could give it more than five stars. The ranch is crazy taste so milky and so is the nacho cheese insane

Cool, modern space with accompanying menu. No table service-- you go up to order-- but they come to…read morethe table with your order. Avocado toast, cream of corn soup, cream of mushroom soup, grilled salmon sandwich -- we loved everything we ordered. They also brought a carafe of water to the table ( and refilled it when empty!). A nice touch. Kind of on the expensive side for a non-table service restaurant, but what isn't these days?

Parking on the busy street is tough, but there's a public lot in the back. It's a small kosher…read morerestaurant about the size of a L.I.R.R. car and very clean (including the bathroom). We were there for Sunday lunch. You look at menu, order from the counter, receive a plastic number to put on your table, and then wait for your order to be brought to you. In that regard, it comes off like fast food, but the food quality and preparation (at least as far as we could tell in our virgin visit) is better than most fine restaurants. The mixed salad (see photo) came with mixed greens, cubed sweet potato, marinated red onion, cucumber, walnuts, orange slices, pomegranate seeds, and a light sweetish dressing ... loved it. It also came with some sliced and toasted sourdough bread and butter. My cappuccino came in capped paper cup, as if I had ordered take-out and they never brought the Splenda I twice requested. My wife loved her quinoa salad. On two occasions, the servers brought food to our table that we didn't order. Seems to me it would be a better dining experience if we had a dedicated waiter/waitress. Otherwise, we loved the food and hope to try it again someday.
