My family just spent a week in Rangeley and had a chance to eat at a number of restaurants in town. The Shed was a high-light of our dining-out experiences. The owner and chief was friendly and talented. This is a small restaurant with several tables outside under canopies with a good view of the lake. We went in with low expextations of what looked like a dive and one that was focused on BBQ. Having lived in the heart of BBQ crazed North Carolina (both Eastern & Western), I am always ready to be critical of BBQ. We were a party of 5 adults and 4 teenagers. My 17 year old son felt "The Toolbox" hamburger (House hamburger with pulled pork, jalapeno, cheese, & bacon) was the best hamburger he ever had. The Mac & Cheese he had as a side was excellent and the fries well above average. I had the pulled pork sandwich with coleslaw on a fresh warm brioche bun. The pulled pork that had been cooked in house was outstanding the BBQ sauce not NC styled, but more of a standard BBQ sauce was actually pretty good and the homemade hot sauce great. The coleslaw was not the standard slaw you expect with BBQ, but more a great coleslaw salad with raisins, broccoli, and a great creamy dressing. It worked well with the pork and was a great side by itself. The day we were there they also had fried clams, again not the standard chopped up overly breaded clam strips you might expect, these were fresh plump full bellied juicy lightly breaded bits of wonder, with a homemade light tarter sauce on the side. The highlight was my brother's rack of ribs that he happily shared. Incredible, among the best I have ever had, juicy, tender, great smoke and the same BBQ sauce as on the pork. He had the corn bread on the side which was moist slightly sweet and flavorful - great. The beer list was modest, but a good selection including good regional craft beers. The others in our party equally enjoyed our meal and after eating at a couple of other Rangeley restaurants wished we had returned to "The Shed" instead. A couple of minor points, they ran out of their homemade beans and the wait for the food was a little long, however, the owner is the only one in the kitchen, we were on vacation in a slow paced relaxed outdoors activity focused area, so it was not a big deal. Also, the waitress was helpful, friendly and always responsive. In summary this is a gem, outstanding food taken to a notch above what you would expect, everything tasted fresh and of high quality ingredients. Oh, and the portions were generous! They also have vegan items. Wish we had a chance to have tried more off the menu. I actually made a point to stick my head in the kitchen to thank the owner, something I never do. read more
