Love this store. Have been consigning with them for about 10 years. They have great brands for tweens such as iviva, athleta girl and some great boutique brand tops and dresses. Pricing is fair. If you are the type who won't shell out 76$ for a pair of athleta girl leggings this is the place for you. I don't even have a first child yet along a second one, but if I was a mom I'd shop here...especially after noticing lately how expensive kids clothing can be. Seriously- $50 for a sweater that a toddler can wear 2 times before growing out of? The Second Child understands that, which is why the owners decided to open this store 20 years ago upon having her second child. I was shopping with fellow yelper Tristin M, who being the fabulous mom that she is noticed this store. I did some browsing of my own and noticed that they have some really cute clothes at amazing prices...I wish some of this stuff came in my own size! This place is good not great. Cheaper than brand new, good selection of name brands but if you want new kids clothing and aren't a label snob, go to target or Carters. If you're looking for brand names this is your store. For toys and books it's hit and miss. They have some stuff that is great and cheap but as others point out some stuff is used and you can get it cheaper on Amazon. We bought a few books for $1-3 each and some grab bags and some name brand outerwear that wasn't used hard and it was an overall win. read more

Painful to have to write this review as this is (or was) one of my favorite consignment stores in Chicago. Walked in today to browse for fall clothing for my two year old, admittedly for the first time without her, and was immediately asked to surrender my laptop bag (due to policy). I have been here at least twenty times before, and even spoke to the owner on multiple occasions in the past (who was present today), but this is the first time I felt unwelcome and downright criminal. If bag checks are your policy, today was the first time you attempted to enforce it, and lost a loyal, repeat customer in the process. When I mentioned what happened to my wife, she told me that she was there on Saturday with three enormous bags filled with clothes (from different stores) and nobody asked her to check those bags. I've been going to the Second Child for almost eighteen years - that's how old my kiddo will be in 3 months. They've taken most of what I've brought, helping me understand what it is they're looking for (e.g. hardback books only, no paper), and paying a fair price for the things that did sell. We've about aged out, so I'm writing this review to encourage you to GO HERE if you have young kids -- or if your baby, too, grows out of her many 3-6-month-old clothes by the time she's 4 months old (oh yes, I remember THOSE days!) It's on the same floorplan as most Chicago 2-/3-flats because that's what it is. The clean and pleasant half-bathroom has been a lifesaver for us more times than I can count. And if any of your girls sell Girl Scout cookies, you might find a friend here, as we used to. Thanks, everyone. read more

It's hard for me to decide how to rate this store. There are pros and cons. Pros: The store is PACKED with children's clothes. Tons of stuff and the prices seemed pretty good from what I could see. They also have socks, shoes, and other assorted baby items like bouncers or walkers. I didn't look at the prices on the baby items. Cons: The maternity section. I know it's probably not their main draw but there are only two racks and they didn't have very much selection. A lot of black pants, a few pairs of jeans and some skirts for the bottoms. The tops and dresses had a wider range of stuff but it covered all seasons from what I could tell. They had the boutique brands like Japanese Weekend, Olian and Michael Stars but also the cheaper brands like H&M, Old Navy and Gap. The prices were a bit more than what I was willing to pay (no used Old Navy Item should ever cost more than $5 the way that store puts things on sale). I'll be back for the kids clothes for sure but I'll stick to the sale racks for mat wear since the stuff is at the same price. read more

I was so glad to run into this place by accident on the way to my car! It's a cute little Children's clothing store right next door to Argo... Been there for 20 years doing clothes through consignment... I could see how I had missed it before cause it's up a few steps onto a stoop... small sign... nothing fancy schmansy... It's cute!... And then you get to the door and buzz to get in... This place has Children's clothes galore! Kiddie stuff can get just as expensive as adult clothing and we all know how fast the little guys can grow out of EVERYTHING in a matter of months so this place is perfect because everything is really reasonably priced, in good shape and... they had stuff for all ages! 5 stars because I think I just made a new destination point for myself when it comes to shopping for the kid! P.S. they're jam packed with winter stuff right now so if you have a niece or nephew or kid of your own.... go check it out!! Made me a happy momma today!!! read more

Just went here today to get some snow suit/pram/bunting for my upcoming baby. The place is pretty small but there's plenty of items for infants, toddlers, and kids. Yes their maternity section is just 2 racks but this place is called 2nd CHILD not 2nd pregnancy so for those that gave it a low rating base on their maternity selection then you really are being unfair. I ended up buying 2 snow suits/pram for $44. One was by Baby Gap and the other was Ralph Lauren. Their items are in good condition and I think their price is reasonable for the designer brands they carry. If you care more about prices and practicality then this place is not for you. You should go to Once Upon A Child. Don't expect cheap when you're shopping in Lincoln Park. I will definitely go back and bring some friends :) read more

Been here a couple times and each time have found a variety of things. I initially came here to try and find some consignment maternity dresses for evening wear and was pleasantly surprised to find maternity as well as everything baby. They have infant to toddler sizes for both genders that are gently used. There is a small maternity selection and accessories like strollers and cribs but there is TONS of clothes. Not the best maternity but I will be back for some clothes and to try and sell clothes that I can't use. Note-the store is very small so taking the stroller into this store makes it hard on the mom as well as the others shopping. read more

I loved this place. I will be a new "Glamma" in April and wanted to pick up a few things. It ended up being their end of the season closeout and I was able to purchase a huge bag of clothes, which included several dresses and four or five Baby Gap sweaters, all nicely worn. I also found a cradle swing which was on my daughter's registry for almost $200.00...I paid $11.00. I spent $40.00 and got the swing, the dresses, (all name brand), several pairs of adorable leggings, sweaters and a Baby Gap "shearling" coat for next winter that looked absolutely brand new. I was thrilled and my daughter was thrilled. I presented the items to my daughter at her baby shower and no one knew they were pre-worn. I will be going back for spring things. P.S. The owners helped me dismantle the cradle swing as I had no clue. read more

Cheaper than brand new. Needs bigger space and sound dampening walls. Walked in, they've got some clean clothes at almost thrift store prices. The staff is friendly, the location is probably great, toys are clean and in good condition. More infant & toddler clothes, not so much maternity. I like this place a lot. They are quite picky about what they consign from sellers; this makes it so easy for the shopper! I've picked up some super cute maternity clothes for a fraction of the price. They carry only the better brands of maternity clothes and everything is in good condition. Like any consignment shop, it is hit or miss, you might hit the jackpot and find tons of stuff you love in your size, or you might not, that's the thrill of the hunt for consignment shopping. The kid's clothes are very nice, once again, they are picky about what they take. I was in there recently looking for summer newborn clothes, it seemed that someone else had the same idea and cleared everything out! So it's the kind of place you need to stop in frequently and see what's new. It's right by the Armitage Brownline station so very easy to get to; don't bother with driving. I didn't know they had an upstairs! It isn't very obvious, I'll have to check it out sometime. It is a rather cozy store, so for the love of God, please leave your zamboni-sized double strollers outside! read more

Both ladies that worked at the store were very friendly. The prices don't look that great, but when you get the percentage off depending on the price tag color it makes more sense. I got two pairs of maternity jeans...one off brand for $12 and a pair of Citizens for $20. I will come back to get clothes for my baby when he is born. read more

Visited here looking for maternity clothes. There is one rack towards the rear of the store. Sizing was concentrated at medium and up, I think there were six total garments that were XS and S. But lots of nice looking denim in the larger sizes. Prices we're just ok, I've been trying to shop exclusively used for maternity wear and I don't think this place really has anything to offer in that respect that an online reseller doesn't. I did appreciate that they have a washroom for trying on garments. I did browse the baby stuff for some nicer, limited use non-clothes baby items that I really don't want to buy new (ie fancy bassinet) but wasn't seeing anything that grabbed me. For the limited space and neighborhood demographic I thought the selection of items would be nicer/higher end. They did have lots of nicer baby clothes. I would stop by to browse if i was in the neighborhood already but would not make a trip back just to visit. read more

Just finished shopping here with my pregnant sister. We found great cheap maternity clothes! The maternity section is tiny (two racks) compared to what they have in kids' clothes (an entire store), but we majorly scored. She got about 8 pieces for $70. All were quality, adorable, belly-licious gems that you couldn't even tell were used. Many of the fancier items were under $10! Apparently their huge Winter sale is next weekend where everything will be 50-75% off. Then, on Feb. 1st, they are hanging all of the Spring stuff. Im not a fan of this place. It felt super overwhelming with the racks super packed. Most of the stuff was rather expensive. For example, the gap items were cheaper on sale at gap.com. I don't see the point in buying secondhand of its more expensive than the new item. Other stuff can be bought cheaper at Marshalls and TJ Maxx. There were some nice sweaters, but I wouldn't pay $50 for a sweater a newborn would wear just a few times. read more

I've been a dedicated consignment store shopper for decades, so when I finally had a baby daughter, one of my first questions was, "Are there any hip consignment shops for kids?" Thank God, the answer is yes. My daughter is two now, and I've dressed her almost exclusively from Second Child. But you would never know I wasn't dropping beaucoup bucks at super expensive boutiques across the city. Really love this place, I left today with over 60 dollars of clothes, and halloween costumes for my two little ones...First time there n def will be coming back more n more!!! This is def an "upscale" second hand store compared to once upon a child, and the lady was very helpful there with finding my kids costumes!!!! The prices our fair, and the clothes were all neatly placed and not thrown around and torn up...The only thing I didn't agree with was the ugg baby boots that were kind of dirtier than expected were 20 bux.....That too me is a little high for baby second worn boots....but other than that i really love this place n i didn't catch the employees name but thank you so much for helping me find the costumes for my kids and saved a lot!!!! I came into the 2nd Child a sleep deprived new mom with little knowledge or experience, but a head filled with recommendations of "must haves" from my friends, relatives and books. I quickly assembled 30 plus items of clothing for our newborn and headed (okay, dragged myself) to the check-out. The owner quickly went through my 30 items, pared them down to 8 and gently told me that I was wasting my money by buying so many clothes our son would very quickly outgrow. It was at that moment that the 2nd Child won my heart and most of my future baby/child shopping dollars. Their items are in mint condition, well-arranged, well-price daily, and astonishingly inexpensive during their twice yearly blow out sales. Amy's Second Child is as good as it gets. High end merchandise in excellent condition for moderate prices. You'll also find many unique pieces here. I have been a regular at Second Child for 3.5 years and don't know what I'd do without this gem. I've introduced so many friends who also adore it. Love, love, love this place. I'm expecting my daughter July 7th, 2010. The owner is extremely helpful and all of the items are in fantastic condition. I've always managed to find something on each of my adventures here. Most of my daughter's wardrobe has been purchased from The Second Child. The location off the brown line at Armitage is great. I found a beautiful baptismal gown and bonnet which had never been worn. It had just been brought in an hour earlier. Everytime I've been to the Second Child there seems to be a sale of some sort. As with other city shops, this is little cramped. They have fair selection of used baby/infant clothes and some gear. Although they don't have space for more gears. I could also find gd quality maternity clothes here. Wish I had visited it earlier in my pregnancy while I was desperately looking for petite maternity pants. Definitely a hit or miss. But none the less absolutely amazing. Quality items for your littles. Be it a stroller, toy or even educational and fun books. You can tell their selection is very selective. Right off of the brown line and free street parking nearby. I went to The Second Child for the first time today and had the first pleasant experience so far in my quest for stylish maternity clothes on a budget. I haven't done a ton of maternity clothes shopping, but of the places I've been, I've found a lot of maternity clothing runs large (I'm a smaller short person) and there seems to be a surplus of twee out there (i.e. bows, flowers, and t-shirts with little sayings on them). The selection at The Second Child is not large, but it is well curated. No overwhelming amount of cutesy here. The staff was very friendly, and I'm very excited to wear my new-to-me clothes! Bonus-- they were also having a sale, so two of the items I bought were 30% off! read more

I have been in this store several times and each time I have a negative experience due to the unhelpful sales staff. I just called today looking for any items made by Community Playthings, a maker of wooden blocks, and large items such as mini kitchenettes, tables chairs etc. I asked the sales person who said they have such items but don't know who the makers are. She also mentioned she didn't know any brand names in particular that they carry in the store. I found that hard to believe that being that second hand stores generally know if they are carrying a name brand stroller like Bugaboo, or the Bob jogger stroller or other high end items. read more

Just So SO.... This place is very inconvenient to enter when you have a stroller (which most people looking for baby clothes have) You have to leave your stroller outside because there are stairs to get in it. The selection tends to get pretty stale- same stuff there for a long time. Also, although the brands are good/botique type stuff at times it is used and overpriced for being used. I still go in from time to time to see what they have but usually leave wthout buying anything and am overall not a huge fan of the place. read more

I was excited when someone told me that there was a place that resaled Maternity clothes.. not only because I need some.. but wondering about selling mine when I am done with this pregnancy. I was the only one in there. I saw the lady working. She didn't even acknowledge that I was there. It is a small rack of maternity clothes but good quality. I gave about 10 items for a consignment there and was specifically told that for the 1 st time customers they keep any items that were not sold instead of donating them . Not true! They donated items that I didn't want them to! I never got an email or a phone call, they never mailed me a check for items that were sold either. I found some cute stuff there, but overall it is difficult to look through the clothes (very packed) and some stuff seems too expensive (a used Gymboree outfit for $28?). This certainly is as good as it gets. After spending outrageous amounts of money on my 10 month old daugther's clothes and watching her grow out of them in seconds, I decided to find a good consignment store. This place has all the same boutique brands and everything is in great shape. I just happened to come at the end of their season so everything was even cheaper. The store is clean and organized too. You don't feel like you're sorting throught other people's "junk" like in other second hand stores. Well worth the trip!!! read more

Very friendly staff. Went in to check out strollers and my 2 year old found a toddler bike that she loved. I wanted to make sure the seat would adjust down to her size and the owner was so helpful. She brought out tools and adjusted the bike seat so we could try it out before we bought it. My daughter was having a fussy day and having a meltdown in the store, which was a nightmare for me, but the staff and owner were very friendly and understanding that 2 year olds have their days!! How anyone could give this place four stars I have no idea. I can't believe I even wasted the parking $ to come here. The maternity clothes are hideous, on a rack like a cheap garage sale, and I could buy new pants or dresses for significantly less! A baby shirt that is used and on which the fabric is worn costs like $15 and they want $35 for used baby shoes?? Nuts. Maybe dumb Lincoln Park yuppies are willing to pay these prices but I will go get some new stuff at Marshall's or TJ Maxx. read more
