Our server, Dailey, was personable and kind. She listened to my idea to make the menu more friendly to folks who are visually impaired (add some photos please). I couldn't interpret the menu. It was too many words for me to sort out so I asked her for a recommendation. She recommended a bacon turkey club sandwich with avocado added. So that's what I got. It was so good! The fries were good too! Lots of seasoning. I love their gold and crispy color too. My partner had the chicken fried steak with mashed potatoes. She asked him if he wanted brown or white gravy. He said white. I would have chosen brown. I love that the choice is there! His food was good too. We will definitely be back to try more things on their menu in the future! read more

Caution: Place can get loud real quick and it can be difficult to have a conversation. Service was fantastic. Regularly checked in on us and really made us felt welcomed. Food: We ordered the spread that had chips and guac, wings, quesadillas. Good and plentiful. Drinks: not a fan of the plastic drink "glasses" but good. Downside: I asked for an espresso martini. They didn't have the coffee to make it but offered another drink. When we checked out I didn't notice that she kept the drink on the ticket. Emailed the manager and they did a real good solid by refunding twice the amount! Drink is $8 and they gave me $15 for the trouble. Solid customer service I would say. Not a sports bar person, but the food is good. The service I received from Marissa yesterday was top notch. She was attentive, sweet, on top of everything. She noticed I was having a bad day and went out of her was to make me smile. But the time I left, I was in a better mood. It's servers like her that make eating out worth it. read more

Disappointed with the Inconsistency and Service We visited Sandbox today and arrived at 10:30 AM, only to be told they didn't open until 11. No problem -- we came back at 11, planning to enjoy brunch. However, we were then told that brunch is no longer served, and the staff made it clear they were not willing to accommodate that. Knowing that bacon and eggs were still on the menu, we asked if we could order them à la carte. After a long wait, they finally agreed -- but it took quite a while to get any clarity or service. We were one of only three people in the restaurant, yet the experience still felt slow and disorganized. We ordered a drink, only to be told 10 minutes later that the blenders weren't working. Ten minutes after that, the drink still hadn't come, so we settled for a Diet Coke. As Derby locals, we've been to Sandbox many times throughout the year. Unfortunately, the experience has become increasingly inconsistent. Management seems to constantly rotate, and while some of them clearly recognize us, they act like they've never seen us before. There's a lack of warmth, hospitality, and appreciation for loyal, returning guests. It would go a long way to feel genuinely welcomed and valued -- especially in a town like Derby, where word-of-mouth and repeat business matter. The high turnover, lack of leadership continuity, and uneven service make it hard to recommend this place, even though the concept and space have so much potential. We want to support Sandbox. We want it to be the spot where we can bring friends for lunch, dinner, or a drink. But for that to happen, the consistency in food, service, and atmosphere needs to significantly improve -- and it starts with leadership, staff training, and pride in the guest experience. read more

We just experienced the worst service I've ever had anywhere. The food was good. The waitress was very, very unprofessional. Bartender had no customer appreciation either. Asked for a manager and was told by her that there wasn't one to talk to. That is exactly how she said it. We had been to Sandbox many times before this new ownership, just seems that a lot has changed. Customers need to be taken care of and respected. Please do better. read more

This has to be said. I've given this place a chance four times over the last couple of years. It's cold in this place. The service is mediocre and the food simply does not taste good. Today I ordered a BBQ Bacon Cheeseburger. I took two bites before asking my husband to also take a bite. We both agreed the cheeseburger smelled like fish. We have gone here a few times for lunch and dinner on the weekend and during the week. Every time has been a great experience. This place is always busy and a nice addition to Derby. We have had several different things from the menu. Chicken Fried Steak,Fish & Chips, Cuban Sandwich etc. The hi Ken Fried Steak is a fave and I enjoyed the Cuban Sandwich. Definitely give the Sandbox a try. Cool atmosphere, reasonable prices and good food. read more

Can I just say the service here was great! The workers here are so hospitable! The boy at the front who showed me to my table with the curly hair was so nice to me and my kids! I felt like I was in a home away from home here! The food was great and the chicken Alfredo was amazing! I recommend it! The music is good and they have a great selection! Had a family Christmas planned for 28 people. They did not have us set up, had to get our own silverware, napkins, ketchup, etc. The food came out ridiculously slow. Spoke to the manager by myself and another family member spoke to her as well. She apologized but, no compensation was offered. Plus because of the size of our group gratuity was added on. Very poor service and management. Even the ladies bathroom had no toilet paper which was something should have been done the night before closing routine. Finally open...sorta. Food was good and nice portions (except for the egg rolls. $10 for 2 cut in half, but tasty) All draft beers were not being served as the cooler got shut off by mistake. I am excited that they have good prices on alcohol and large amount of drafts on tap, including trulys. Service was still a little rocky, but server was trying his best. Lots of questions we asked no one could answer. (Mainly on PB courts) You still can't make reservations to play and that's a bit frustrating as the courts have been and are ready to be played on. There are some private dinning rooms for parties and hopefully patio gets open-so when we get lucky and have a nice day during the winter-you can sit outside. The BOX will be an excellent addition to Derby for entertainment and F&B, but needs some time to get some wrinkles ironed out. read more

I've been a frequent customer at the sandbox since it opened. They have had lots of changes since then, price changes, menu changes but the worst change they could've done was remove breakfast/brunch. It was only served on sundays and it was the best breakfast spot I.m.o in the derby area. It almost became tradition to eat breakfast at the sandbox on sundays. Now there's nothing worth going to the sandbox for. BRING BREAKFAST BACK ! I will remove review if/when they bring breakfast back. For now 3/10 read more

They extremely overbooked Monday beer league, and cut our playing time in half. Didn't tell us until hours before the first session lol. They put way too many teams in the league. Shortened the matches down to 1 set to 25 vs an actual best of 3 match. lol the games end up being 15-30 min of playing for each match. I spend more time driving to Derby than we do playing. read more

We booked an event with over 20 people, from 1 pm to 3 pm , waitress was great, the event coordinator wasn't present , there was no host , no guidance , our food came in way different time frames , i ordered my food at 1:30 pm and 2:45pm still didn't get my food and many other as well. Manager was not helpful in any aspect , didn't even come to check with us if we needed anything. Not booking another event here and don't recommend to anyone to book an event here. read more

First off impression was a cafeteria style/stale looking (inside) restaurant. Tables & chairs set up in large room like entering a cafeteria-No ambiance whatsoever. I definitely overdressed for my date night out here. Jeans & a sweatshirt would suffice. One good thing I can say, is the salmon dinner I ordered was excellent. The prices for food were very good. Hubby ordered fish & chips -not the best / expected fries but homemade potato chips were tasty. Missing malt on the side for dipping! This place is fairly new and currently hit or miss. I believe they are taking feedback and constructive criticism to get better and better! With that being said, this visit was definitely a soft 5 but would of been a hard 5 if they implement the following on this fish and chips meal! 1. Fry the fish just a few more minutes to give more of a crunch and make the inside even flakier. 2. Offer Cajun or Barbecue season salt for the chips which were so good! This was our fourth try eating here, and I have always found the food to be average in taste. I come because my husband seems to like it until this time. We didn't receive all of our food orders together. We had to find our own silverware. This place is always loud and, therefore, hard to hear. I ordered the chicken fried steak. The plating looked visually great. What really hurt it was the flavor. The mash potatoes had an over powering fake chemical/industrial butter flavor. The corn itself while visually stunning, was COLD and again there was something off with the "butter" coating the corn. It tasted more like mayonnaise (if you can believe that) than butter. We were super excited to try this place, despite all the bad reviews. We sat for 25 minutes without being greeted (after the host sat down menu's and silverware), while watching (as you can see pictured) three managers sitting at a table without a care in the world as they made eye contact with us multiple times, and 4-5 servers standing in the kitchen hallway just staring aimlessly into the restaurant. They weren't busy whatsoever. Despite the amenities, I don't see this place staying open for even the remainder of the year unless some massive management and basic training takes place. Until then, we won't be back. I can't even vouch for the food, considering after 25 minutes without any service, we just walked out. read more

Food keeps coming out cold. Was there with a group of friends a few weeks ago and their plate came out twice, cold each time. Last weekend my plate came out cold and after talking to the manager he said he couldn't refund the cold plate. So we had to pay for something we didn't eat and left. Seated right away, a bit of a wait for our server to notice us. However, the food was excellent! Grilled Salmon has a hard sear on one side, seasoned with a bit of spice, and a chili glaze on top. Served on a pad of excellently seasoned rice. The price was very good for the large serving of Salmon. Spouse ordered the Chicken Fried Steak, and it was meaty and crispy and covered with a tasty pan gravy. the place was about 3/4 full, and all the tables seemed to be really enjoying their food. Oh, did I mention that each of our dinners came with two huge sides and was just $12 each? So pleased this is near our home, we'll be dropping by frequently! We joined friends for a get together, all was well until we received the check, an overly friendly female server left a note on the receipt to the male who paid. Seems like every time we come here service seems to slack. We got our food and some were finished eating before we got our beer. 2/3 orders came out wrong and this happens nearly every time we come. The Reuben sandwich and shoestring onion rings were delicious!! Our waitress checked on us several times to see if we needed anything. The weather was nice so they had the two garage type doors open.
