We've been twice now and had a great experience both times. The host was friendly and sat us quickly. The servers were knowledgeable and quick to tell us things they were out of or still perfecting in the kitchen (since it's a new restaurant). We've had burgers, street tacos, sandwiches and my kids have tried their kids meal without complaints! All of our food was hot and made as requested. We tried the appetizer sampler and only had about 10 chips, mentioned it to the server and were brought more...no issues! Of course the dining room is loud...it's a bar, but we could easily still talk and carry on conversation at our tables! We love the dome and the new activities it has brought to derby, we will be back! read more

Chas the owner just sits at the bar and drinks, has no idea how to run a business. Yes the place is cool and great but there is a line out the door, and there is no waiting list (call in list) to have a order of when people should come or dine in. I don't usually make bad reviews because I work in the restaurant industry and I know it's a tough industry. However, The Sandbox at Derby has a manager that should not be a manager. Her name is Kathy. She's rude and has no professionalism. It all started last weekend when she threatened to take a table away from our party while we were waiting for the rest of our group to get there. Mind you, I'm sitting with regulars who go there all the time. I know where I work, we aim to please our regulars in any way possible because they're loyal, paying customers. Also, we got there FOUR HOURS before the Chiefs game to secure a table since they don't take reservations. Anyway, she comes up to our table and said, "The rest of your group has 30 minutes to get here." Feeling threatened and confused, I said, "Or what?" She said, "Or I'll take this table away." I said, "Wow, that's crazy." Then she proceeded to tell us that EVERY restaurant has a rule that you need 50% of your party there in order to be seated. I said, "I work at a restaurant and we do not have that rule." She proceeded to talk about whatever, I stopped listening because I was annoyed and uncomfortable and couldn't believe a manager was being so rude and honestly a little obsessive with the fact we didn't have our whole party there before the Chiefs game. I'm sure there was a million other things she could be doing, but she chose to stare at our table and make us uncomfortable. It was weird. Now fast forward to yesterday. This is where it gets juicy. All of a sudden a bunch of servers are looking at me like in awe, and I go up to them by the bar (because they all like me, I'm friends with a lot of them) like what's up?? Then I get told that Kathy was in the back and to a bunch of staff, was like, "You guys, you know table 20? I hate that table. That girl, she's a bitch." (Me being the girl) She also went on to say how I'm "snobby," and "why is she not working on a night like tonight if she bartends wherever it is she works?" Like what in the actual fuck???? I don't work Sundays, honey. I have a schedule and make my money, don't worry about me. Apparently there was more said but those were the main points, is what I was told! Lol. I cannot believe she has a job. I heard she's been fired from The Sandbox before and then somehow got re-hired. Terrible move and terrible look on The Sandbox for that. They have good food, cold beer, great servers, they're all nice, fun, and good at their jobs. And they have a manager, Jeff, who is great and everyone loves. But then you have Kathy there to ruin it all. I've never felt so uncomfortable at a restaurant. I've never seen a manager go out of their way to try to ruin a bunch of REGULAR'S times, avidly looking for a problem. I would promote the sandbox unless Kathy is there. If she is there, run. Oh, and I asked to speak to the manager before I left. My server kept coming out with a bunch of excuses Kathy kept making as to why she couldn't come talk to me (hmm, wonder why?) and I said I would wait. When she FINALLY came out, I confronted her and asked why she called me a bitch and she said she didn't. So she's rude, bad at her job, and a liar. Nice work, Kathy! read more

Ok, the good, the average and the bad. The good, we got right in at 6:00 on a Friday night. The average was the food. My wife ordered the Nashville chicken sandwich which was suppose to be on the spicy side. It tasted like a Wendy's chicken sandwich, my hamburger was good but nothing I would come back for and the beer is served in a plastic glass at room temperature. The boneless chicken wings, pretzels, and chips were tasty. The bar/restaurant is "INCREDIBLY" noisy, it isn't impossible to cary on a conversation, but difficult. I mean noisy! Would we come back for food maybe not. Now for the good. Every thing east of the restaurant (under the dome) is top notch. The sand volley ball, pickle ball courts, and corn hole are above and beyond, we will take advantage of these activities. read more

Came within the week of opening., not a good experience. The frying oil may have been days old because all our fried foods were burnt and chicken tenders were dry. Maybe it's gotten since opening week but first impressions are everything. read more

Very good food for a great price! I had the grilled salmon and it was delicious and only $12! The outdoor space is super fun too!

Absolutely terrible!!! I've eaten here 3 times but never again. Each time hasn't gotten worse. First the service was awful food decent. Having the same thing each time the dish changed. The fish changed taste quality went down homemade chips changed to soggy droopy French frys. read more

Had a reservation on 10/28 for a pickleball and volleyball courts. It was cold, rainy that day and they didn't have the dome up yet. Tried calling their phone number at 11a when they were supposed to be opened and nobody answered the phone. Then their event coordinator called me at 1225p when I had the reservation at 1p too tell me that the pickleball courts are very wet and if I would like to cancel. Well I was already on my way to the Sandbox so I told her that I would talk to her more when we got there because we were meeting other people too. I got there and cancelled the reservation she told me I would be refunded my money and still no refund has been made. This is so unprofessional. I guess I will be calling there again to try to get my money back. It is ridiculous that you have to go through so much from a company to get your money back. very mediocre at best. noisy with tvs and music going full blast in the early evening. we couldn't have a conversation. food is meh, but it was hot( mostly). not bad but nothing to get excited for, or for going back again. service was ok. We called all week and left messages to have someone call us to discuss a large party. Not necessarily for a reservation, Just to let them know that this is what was happening in case they needed to staff differently. We were having coming in on Sunday for my daughter's birthday. We never received a phone call back. The website stated they had brunch, so we were all going to have brunch once we got there the manager informed us they are not doing brunch on Sunday, this is the second time we arrived and were told no brunch on Sunday although it's stated on the website. At that point we let them know there would be a party of 25 people, The manager informed us of her new policy that they will not seat any table over 16 because the night before they set tables up for a party of 20 and 8 people showed up, Now granted I've been a manager of casual dining establishments for 12 years I'm no longer in the business however, I feel may be my expectation a little high. So we all ordered off the menu. I had the ribeye with mashed potatoes and onion strings. There were three other people at the table that also ordered the sirloins. I was extremely disappointed in the quality of my ribeye was extremely tough, and overcooked had absolutely no seasoning on it. It just tasted like a piece of cooked beef. The others in the party also stated the same about their sirloins. We decided after lunch we would go out back and play volleyball and cornhole. I specifically asked if we needed to pay our bill they said it was up to us. I asked if there was a bartender outside they said yes, so we all paid our individual checks from lunch, went outside and there was no bartender so we had to walk into the actual restaurant every time we need to get a refill on our beverages. The volleyball and cornhole was amazing. That's an amazing attraction for Derby. I think that this could really be an amazing establishment if they can get the food, the management and everybody on the same page of what's going on because it seem like there was a huge disconnect with everybody that was working.
