Passed by this restaurant on the way to the botanical garden and noticed their happy hour. Everyday from 2PM - 7PM they are serving $1 tacos. (Carnitas, chorizo, and ground beef; no carne asada unfortunately). Had 3 tacos, a tostado de ceviche, and a small horchata for ~$10. Good bang for the buck here on Catalina island and less than a mile from the main shops along the shore. Happy hour included drinks as well such as $2 draft beer and $5 margaritas. Didn't have any drinks this time though. Seating includes indoor and outdoor with plenty of couches on the inside and umbrella tables outside with the bar. Great place! $1 tacos during happy hour! Ordering: You begin ordering at a window and once you get your number, you turn it into another station and choose your tortilla type and meat. There are four different kinds of meats (carnitas, chorizo, ground beef, and I don't Remeber the forth.) The next station has onions, cilantro, lettuce, and different salsas. If you want cheese you have to pay an additional .50 each taco. Services/atmosphere: the employees were extremely kind and nice. After my first round of tacos the lady hooked it up with the Chorizo. Food: My fiancé and I got the tacos, which they were good. Just like any other place that serves street tacos. The meat wasn't dry and had a great flavor. No complaints here, especially for $1. Drinks: we got the "$19 Well Margaritas Pitcher" during happy hour. It was actually stronger then I expected and the pitcher pours for 6, which got us on a good buzz. BEST happy hour on the island! From being here for the first time two years ago, the Sandtrap was what I was looking forward to most on our return visit. Happy Hour everyday!? Sure why not! Not many spots in Catalina offer HH during the weekend so I would try and take advantage if you can. The place is more of a hole in the wall joint with a bar in the "backyard" kind of feel. If your hotel is far I don't think the walk would be quite worth it but just go in with low expectations and think of it as an adventure if anything. It was pouring when we decided to rent golf carts this past weekend. We drove by this place last time we were on the Island so I wanted to make a quick stop during our golf cart ride. We parked the golf cart on the side and walked in, to the right is the food which includes an enclosed space and to the left is the small bar which is outside (with covers and no heaters). We were full from eating earlier so sadly we didn't get a chance to try out the $1 tacos. We only ordered a pitcher of beer that was $9. It was hard for me to drink because my fingers and toes were freezing. It made it harder because we needed to bring back the cart by a certain time. I down as much as I could and we were on our way. I enjoyed our quick little stop for beer. i recommend stopping by if you're driving around and want to grab food/drinks quick. We came here specifically for their Happy Hour. It is from 2pm-7pm. That is one lone Happy Hour. The specials include Margaritas for $4, pitchers of Margaritas for $17, Domestic Drafts for $2, etc. For food, almost everyone gets the $1 tacos. You walk over to a station and pick your meat, then there is a bar that you can dress your taco at. Your choices are ground beef, chorizo, and shredded chicken. They are all good and although small, you can fill them up with all the toppings at the bar. The seating is mostly outdoors and across from the final hole of the golf course, where there is always a gallery watching. The service is slow, and that would be why there are minus stars. It is a little hidden but on the way up/down by from the memorial/botanical gardens. 1 Tacos!!!!!!!!! 17 Margarita Pitchers!!!!!!! 1000 Yea Buddy's HAHAHA!!! 2-7 everyday. Hate to give a less than stellar review... but this place is just banking on you walking in because it's there. Played a round of golf and needed a place to kill time before check in at our hotel so, why not. Ordered the machaca burrito and while the beef was okay, the cheese was not melted and just felt pushed out of the kitchen. The Sandtrap! I am so glad we found this place because it was magnitudes better than all the other restaurants on the island aka The Touristtrap. Our friends said that they were told that this was a cheap HH place. $1 tacos? I'm always down for that. They weren't the best, but for $1 they were worth it. I probably had 7 to fulfill my taco fix. I always forget about this place when we come to the island. It is an old standard for many because it us right by the golf course. Depends where you are staying if you want to walk here or not. Being born & raised in the heart of LA, I've had much better, but the food came out quick and I imagine this is one of the few fast affordable options on the island. Possibly the cheapest meal on the island (from 2-7pm), short of buying your own groceries at Vons & cooking your own food (but then again, there is only 1 grocery store on the island so it is guaranteed to be marked up as well). Only $1 tacos can lure our group to this short detour uphill to get some grub. Nothing fresh, served somewhat cafeteria style...you pay at the bar, the bartender gives you a ticket & then you mosey on over to get your tacos that has been sitting for awhile. We took a shore excursion while visiting Catalina on a Princess ship. We passed this place on our bus ride. It is near the golf course and off the beaten path of tourists in beautiful Catalina. I like places where the locals go, and this by far is a local hub for a quick bite of Mexican food. You stand in line and order and then sit at an outside table that overlooks the golf course. It is pretty laid back. They have $2 pints of domestics and the tacos and chips/salsa were really good. Service was good. I would go back. Chorizo everything. Best chorizo on the island by far and so far I've had in SoCal. Tacos are great and one of the best deals on the island, a breakfast burrito will make your morning and I personally buy some chips and chorizo and eggs and make my own breakfast nachos and which get rave reviews from everyone that tries them. This place is along the route up to the Wrigley Memorial, so it's kind of away from the Avalon city center. We passed it as we walked up to the garden, and decided to eat lunch there on our way back down. It's not particularly nice looking at all and there is no curbside appeal, but there is a lot of outdoor seating, and we were hungry. To our pleasant surprise, the tacos came with guacamole inside! I didn't have to pay extra for it either? All is well. Would I come back here again? Maybe for happy hour, and maybe if I was hungry from hiking to the Memorial. As others have mentioned the waitress is not friendly but the food is very flavorful. The other restaurants we have tried were very bland, so this was a much needed surprise. I ordered a chili verde burrito that had all the ingredients that make it delicious- sliced tomatoes, onions, cilantros, guacamole and freshly cooked chicken. For $1 tacos, I cant complain. We always make sure we come here on the rare occasion we visit Avalon CA for some happy hour tacos and beer. Happy hour is from 2-7 every day which is awesome! If you want cheese on your tacos, that will cost you an extra .50 cents. This last time we visited (May 28th) they didnt have a chicken option, which was a little disappointing, but the carnitas were... okay. Are these the most amazing tacos ive ever had?
