So my friends and I were craving some good Mexican cuisine, we decided ided to try Maggies. I was told the Chicken Taquitos were great. So I ordered them. When they made it to the table they looked luke chicken tacos. I questioned the waiter he insisted, they were taquitos. Didn't look like any taquitos I've ever seen (they specifically described them as CHICKEN TAQUITOS Two Crispy Rolled Tacos, Topped with Lettuce, Pico de Gallo Guacamole, Cotija Cheese. Served with Rice & Beans, if you look at the photo thats not what I received at all). They were tasteless, no flavor, was boiled chicken, no guacamole no cheese little bit of tomato and lettuce, they were tacos! As many times as I questioned it, he said, "those are taquitos". Not happy at all. The tortilla soup tasted like tomato based soup and hardly any chicken. My friends liked their tostada but the one with chicken was bland, the one with carnival had a little flavor but they were big. Ŵe never got any refills.on the ice tea or soda and we were there for an hour and a half, if they were busy id understand but they werent, it was 5pm on. Wednesday. The decor was nice amd atmosphere was pleasant. But when a customer orders a specific thing, they question it. Do the right thing, bring them what they ordered! I know the difference between a TACO and a TAQUITO. I understand some.places make them their own ways but seeing other customers with what looked to be taquitos, asking them and being told thats what they had then looking at my meal, two totally different things. Food and drinks here were one of our fav on the island - so good we came back for round two the next day. Day 2 we actually ordered a meal so that's what I'm basing my review off. We both ordered the blackened mahi mahi tacos with chips and guacamole as a starter. Guac was great but the star was actually the tomatillo and diablo salsa. It was so delicious and had the right flavor and heat. Tacos were great and nicely portioned. It also came with cilantro rice which we really liked. Maggie's is our favorite place for mexican food and margaritas on island. They seriously make the best strong and tasty margaritas here. We have to come in for lunch whenever we are in town. Restaurant itself isn't big but very cozy and relaxing. My favorites are Caesar salad with shrimps, grilled fish tacos, seafood enchiladas and chicken nachos. I especially love the nachos. They serve the best salsa sauces. Mango habanero is so good with everything. Services are always friendly and foods come out fast. Best place for authentic Mexican in Avalon! read more

Our first time visiting Avalon and worked up our hunger walking around. Decided on Maggie's Blue Rose and was very pleased with our choice. We were seated by the host right away by the entrance and enjoyed people watching while we waited for our food. Waiter was friendly and attentive. Placed our order and we didn't even have to wait long. On our recent mini vacay to Catalina Island we ate at Maggie's Blue Rose twice as there were several unique items on the menu I wanted to try, so it required a couple of visits. Lunch: We sat at a high top near just barely inside from the patio and had great views. We started with the guacamole and chips. The guacamole was perfectly seasoned. The avocado was fresh and creamy, and the salt level was excellent it brought out the avocado. The chips were fresh, and we ordered more to finish off the guacamole. We started with margaritas of course. Mr. B had the Dulce Agave Margarita, with fresh muddled pineapple, infused serrano, and jalapeno citrus rum. It was packed with flavor, a nice level of spice and was very refreshing with the pineapple. As soon as I saw Prickly Pear Margarita, yes please. Filled with prickly pear, infused serrano and jalapeno citrus rum, it was delicious. Sweetness level was perfect, spice level really good. I loved it, and would have it again for sure. Mr. B chose the shrimp tacos with cilantro rice and beans. The tortillas are between regular size and street taco size, but they are filled to the brim. The tortillas for the shrimp tacos were soft and the slaw was excellent. The cilantro rice was packed with cilantro flavor and the beans were creamy with small pieces of whole bean. I chose the crispy potato tacos. The crispy tortillas were stuffed with creamy mashed potato and cheese. The tacos were topped with a nice fresh Pico de Gallo with crumbled cotija style cheese. I chose the Mexican rice as our server said it was better with the potato tacos so I took her recommendation and she was right. Again the refried beans were creamy. It really was our favorite spot on Catalina. Located on Front Street, on the patio you have nice views of the bay. Sitting inside is also nice, with TV's usually tuned to sports, but with ocean breezes sweeping through. Now for dinner: We both went with enchiladas, but very different choices. Mr. B ordered the Chicken Mole Enchiladas with Mexican rice. The tortillas for the enchiladas were blue corn adding an earthy taste to the enchiladas which we really enjoyed. The chicken was juicy, tender and shredded. The mole sauce had a rich flavor, it tasted like it had cooked for days. You get all the notes of chiles, ground almonds and Mexican chocolate. We could have poured it on anything, it was incredible. I went with Mom's Avocado enchiladas which I have not seen on any menu ever and I don't know why. Two blue corn tortillas were filled with creamy avocado and strips of lightly caramelized onions and covered in a Poblano cream sauce. I chose the cilantro rice to go with these enchiladas and it was the perfect pairing. I chose to have Catalina's signature cocktail with my dinner, Buffalo Milk. It was more like a dessert, but who cares, it was cold, creamy and hit every chocolate cream milkshake notes. With vodka, creme de cocoa, Kahlua, fresh banana and cream, yum!! Both meals were great, service was really good, and I can't stop thinking about the mole sauce and the avocado enchiladas. read more

On Sunday, Memorial Day weekend. I specifically took the boat trip from Newport to Catalina just to go eat at this restaurant. The first time I ate here was July of 2025. Everything was amazing, the service,the food, the drinks, and overall experience. Which is why me and my boyfriend went again this past weekend. This time it was a complete disappointment!!! We sat at the bar, and the short girl with black hair behind the bar was terrible at her job. Didn't smile not even once, I had to ask her for chips and salsa multiple times before she actually decided to bring them. Then I ordered two hard shell chicken tacos with green cilantro rice, she brought me a rolled up chicken taco and a folded chicken taco. To add insult to injury, she brought me red/extra salty rice instead of what I ordered. When I told her that they got my order wrong, Not once did she apologize, nor did she even offer to take the plate back and bring me the right food. I didn't want to cause a scene so I took two bites of the taco and left the plate in front of me so they could pick it up. We accidentally left a $20 tip but it was intended for the elderly man who served the cold beers. I really hope that they didn't give it to the girl who does not belong in customer service. My steak was pretty decent and flavored so I'll give it that, the mash potatoes still had clumps of whole potatoes buried in it. No free chips? No problem! At Maggie's Blue Rose, you won't get the usual "here's a complimentary basket of joy while you look at the menu" treatment. Nope. Those chips and salsa are a $4 appetizer--a bold move for a Mexican restaurant but turns out they were worth it so we'll let that slide. The carne asada was juicy and bold, the grilled chicken tacos were perfection, and rumor has it--from a very convincing tour guide--that nothing in this kitchen comes from a can or bottle. My tastebuds believe him. The vibe? Upscale coastal cool. The ocean view from the front of the restaurant is cluttered with tourists but it's still there and reminds you to fiesta, not siesta. Just know this isn't a "get in and get out" kind of place. We came at 2pm on a Wednesday and service was... let's call it "leisurely". But the staff was lovely, the food was worth the wait, and I wasn't mad about an excuse to sip a drink and stare at the ocean for a little longer. Would I go back? We weren't super hungry so we opted to split the Cresent Avenue Trio. It came with One Lazy Enchilada covered in Sauce & Crema (Cheese, Steak, or Chicken), One Soft Taco (Steak or Chicken) One Cheese filled Chile Relleno, Rice & Beans. We enjoyed everything. When we originally wanted to come in the morning they were closed but we're glad we were able to stop by again and at least get drinks before heading back onto the cruise ship. Had a great visit here! Our waiter was very attentive, fun, and patient with our group. We ordered a variety of things, from the Front Street nachos to the "Lazy" cheese enchiladas. Everything came out relatively fast during a busier lunch hour, and everything was delicious! Our only qualm was the initial cleanliness of the tables and chairs, and upkeep of the restrooms. Giving 3 stars because we were able to get a seat and not have to wait. We came here after walking the main drag of Avalon looking for a place to eat. All the restaurants were busy and there were a lot of people drinking that we didn't want to be around. We were also tired from the day we had here and we were just looking for a place that had availability. This place was not crowded, so we came here for dinner. Although we were seated near the bar area, there were not a ton of people drinking here and acting obnoxious in the process. We ordered and got our food pretty quickly. The chips and salsa were honestly the best part of the meal. I ordered the Catalina burrito. The food was just okay. Nothing great. The food was edible, but the burrito left a weird aftertaste. I didn't get sick from it, so that's good. If I ever come back to Catalina Island, I probably won't return, but it served the purpose and we didn't go hungry. read more

This is a good place to go to for drinks only. Tried the award winning prickly pear margarita and it did not disappoint. One of the best, well balanced margaritas I've ever had. The food itself was underwhelming on all dishes we tried. Had the corn on the cob, crab and corn empanadas and the Rosa Azul Platter. The platter should have been the star at the price point it's listed. Nothing packed any real flavor. Maybe I'm spoiled when it comes to Mexican food. The restaurant is right off the ocean by about 300 yards. It's your typical Mexican restaurant decor, but it looked nice. Service was good, I think he really upselled us on the platter though. So, first off, yes, i am back...again...blah blah blah, guess who's back, guess who's back...etc... Second...this place is awesome!! But doesn't get the credibility. I've been to Catalina quite a few times, and I always ask everyone, from frequent vacationers, to food industry experts, to locals, "where should I go eat?" No one ever says "Maggie's Blue Rose." So my wife and I went there expecting "tourist trap" type of average food. We were TOTALLY WRONG!! Everything we had here was awesome, and the staff were all chill as hell and knew what they were talking about. So when you go in, it's like a laid back, atmosphere, but above any feel of "divey." Like relaxed classy, eventhough i was wearing a complete white trash shirt bragging of weed flavored ramen. I am a dirt bag. That being said...the tequila list is off the chains!! They have flights, which, if u like tequila like I do, is one of the more enjoyable flights you can have...a lot of subtle differences. But the main thing I'm talking about out here is the food. I went WAYYYYY OUT OF MY ELEMENT, and ordered the shrimp enchiladas. I'm not huge on seafood, and seafood with cheese just seems like a mistake. Now, I will say that the enchiladas have award winning pablano sauce on them...but I remained skeptical. These weren't just good, they were great. The shrimp were cooked perfectly, and all of the flavors fit together like a glove. Seriously, I'm not sure I've ever recommended seafood with cheese to anyone but people I hate, you NEED TO TRY THIS DISH "Lazy empanadas...w/shrimp." My wife's carne asada was also really good. They use flavors very well here and also knew to not over cook the meat. So you still got that great, off the grill flavor along with the spices and such they added. Even the chips and salsa were good. My advice...mix some of the spicy "yellow salsa" with the mild "red salsa" and dip your chips in it...or even put it over your arroz (rice, kanin, etc...). I can want say enough good things about this place. We spent far less here and got a far better meal then most places on the island...and there are other good places as well...but Maggie's just crushed it for us!! read more

Irritated to pay $1 for bottled water and $4 for chips and salsa but that was a one time charge and they refilled it. Saw some good reviews for this spot while looking up restaurants for our trip to Catalina, sadly we did not enjoy the food as much as others. This was probably the most disappointing meal we had on the island. I ordered the grilled fish taco with spanish rice and my mom the baja fish tacos with cilantro rice. Both of us found our tacos to be extremely bland. The second taco for each of us had a little more flavor as it had time to soak up the lemon juice, but even then it just wasn't that flavorful. My mom liked the beans, but I found them to be very plain and in need of a lot more flavor. The rice was the winner of the meal for me, but again not the best. We sat outside on the patio with a view of the promenade and the ocean, a good spot to people watch and take in the scenery. The place had a good atmosphere, and it was easy to get a spot at lunch time on a weekday (without a cruise ship docked). read more
