What a magnificent, posh, beautiful hotel. The service was so traditionally, and professionally presented. I could not have asked for better service. I just loved the early European architecture of this hotel. The food was divine. The house made molasses bread was served alongside their delicious celery white beetroot soup. My daughter had the oysters. They were locally caught and she said they were the best oysters she ever had. My family and I love this place. Their set courses are super good. Everything is so tasty, especially their seafood dishes. Price per person without drinks is about €50-€70. Very nice. We had a table in the back of the large dining area made up of various rooms. For breakfast the table setting was elegant, like the hotel. We chose the buffet. The offerings were similar to the States with hot foods and lots of bread and fruit choices. GF breads were individually wrapped in a basket. Service was excellent. read more

In town for business and decided to extend my stay and see a friend who flew over from London to visit. You only live once, and a stay at the Shelbourne is a must. The weather was a bit questionable so we decided to have lunch in the hotel and opted for the fish and chips with mushy peas. My favorite staple when I'm in London and I'll eat it in Dublin as well. We ordered starters of Foie Gras royale. The sommelier was very friendly and attentive with good wine suggestions. We then ordered Chateaubriand for two. It includes two side order selections. It comes out with some additional included sides also. It is very delicious and cooked perfectly. It takes around 30 minutes for the dish to be prepared. It is served and sliced at the table. It is a lot of food so I would recommend not ordering a starter. read more

What a fabulous dining experience from start to finish! My husband and I stayed at the Shelbourne for one night at the end of our Ireland trip. We got a reservation at The Saddle Room last minute and it was the best choice we made! We selected the three course menu with raw oysters as well. I selected the mushroom soup, gnocchi and crème brûlée, while my husband selected the smoked salmon, steak, and chocolate cake. All the food was phenomenal, especially the mushroom soup and smoked salmon starters. The wait staff was polite, friendly and informative. We enjoyed the suggest wine pairing for our waiter and never felt rushed or like we were waiting for someone to come by. Highly suggest as a date night or special occasion spot! read more

Having treated ourselves to a night at The shelbourne hotel I decided to check out the menus in house. The only one that suits our price range and tastes was the saddleroom. Offering a 2 or 3 course deal for under €30 we booked for the last sitting on Sat past. Having traveled from Belfast, parked and walked we were running a little late. On entrance to the hotel you find the dining areas first. With signposts for each dining room highlighted well. Approaching the saddleroom we were greated by a host who we informed we had a booking and were slightly late. He checked his watch and grimaced however kindly showed us into our table and arranged for storage for our luggage as we had not yet checked in. Walking to our table I became suddenly aware that we were not as well dressed as the other diners and that the saddleroom bar was a little more fine dining than I had expected. The decor was plush, yet homely with little booth like, private dining areas mixed with the normal open plan seating. As you enter you pass an oyster bar although unused at this time it looked like a great place to entertain. Once seated on a great table by a window which the lovely waitress opened more for us - as we glowed a little from our trek to the hotel, we relaxed some. Until we saw the Cocktail and wine list; Cocktails start at €14 and bottle of wine €37. We ordered wine to share and one of us got a Tom Collins which was a little too bitter for my liking. My food options were Salmon gravlax and the lamb. Both were were excellent! Perfectly presented and great flavours, the jus with the lamb was the best I have had in a long time. The heat in the room was so intense that we all refrained from dessert or tea and coffee, deciding to have a Drink in the bar area instead. Yummmm. We had our anniversary dinner here and it was worth every penny. As an American in Ireland, I noticed that the service felt a bit different. We were given menus and left alone for 15-20 minutes. When the waiter returned, he wanted our drinks and entire meal order. We experienced this all over Ireland, must be an Irish thing? He went ahead and ordered drinks only because we wanted to have a longer dinner. We shared a white onion soup for an app. Oh my, I had no idea how flavorful and creamy it would be. We settled on the chateaubriand (for 2) for dinner and the chef surprised us with an extra side of potatoes to accompany our creamy cauliflower and fries. Potato on potato. The sides were great, but not needed. The chateaubriand was plated table side, oh my! It was moist and full of flavor. I wish I was eating it now. The hotel environment is charming, however, the service has been a handful of bad experiences. Our server was extremely snide at The Saddle Room. She served others before us and then made no attempt to either take an order or provide service (outside of a quick pot of coffee dropped off). We ended up doing the overpriced breakfast buffet (yes, call it what you want- it's a buffet) after waiting so long. She was quick to take away plates AND silverware, and not return. When asked if everything was ok, we were about to let the whole thing slide. But, after explaining to the manager our server was less than stellar and made little attempt for service, he skirted the issue and somehow turned it on us. He asked if we are staying and assured our next visit will be better. We are guests at the hotel for a week. We will not be back. This was not the first issue of brashness or what is feeling slightly discriminatory. Another event was being followed from the lobby, being asked by a staff member if they could help me. I said "no, thank you", yet still followed. I said I was a guest, yet still followed. Then, watched closely until boarding the elevator. We may not look like we belong in fine hotels, but we do quite well and travel well. We will book further in advance and stay at the hotels we prefer, rather then what we were left with, like this time (The Shelbourne). If you are a foreign traveler, I do not recommend the hotel or the restaurants for your stay. Only half of the staff make your experience warm. And it's a Marriott for God's sake, even at 5 stars, I'm not sure why they are being so elitist. read more

My husband & I spent our first Christmas as a married couple at the Shelbourne. Our Christmas dinner was a 5 course extravaganza with amazing food & fantastic service. While we read the menu we were poured a glass of champagne. I had the lobster cocktail to start - the lobster was fresh, the veg was crunchy & the sauce was delicious. I did skip the soup (I'm somewhat intolerant to dairy, my fault though for not letting them know) but my husband loved it. For mains I had duck, which was just melt in your mouth, with all the trimmings - veg, potatoes & everything else you would expect. For dessert I had chocolate & praline profiter rolls. Then our tea/coffee came served with some mince pies. Absolutely delicious overindulgence. The best part of dinner, for my husband anyway, was when the table beside us came to their mains & the head waiter brought the turkey to their table to carve and asked my husband if he wanted seconds. For Breakfast this place is also great. As part of our package we had access to the buffet breakfast (fry, pastries, fruits, cereals etc) and also the a la carte breakfast menu. Both days there I had french toast with bacon & maple syrup. This is the first place in the city I've ever had this dish where the slices of bacon were thick & not just streaky bacon strips. If I was going for a drink at the Shelbourne this wouldn't be my first choice. The largest and most populist of the Shelbourne's bars, to be honest, doesn't do anything for me. The atmosphere is kind of dead, the crowd are trying to be seen by one another a little too hard and it definitely doesn't warrant its heftily hiked up prices. If you're coming for an early afternoon drink with a visiting Granny then the Saddle Room is probably fine. It has good people watching position, overlooking the green, and is decorated with lots of Irish paintings. Three stars for The Saddle Room, there are better fancy bars very nearby. read more

This is the main restaurant in the Shelbourne Hotel. Like most restaurants in Europe things are made fresh (unlike the U.S. Where many restaurants feature pre-packaged foods supplied by companies such as Sysco), that in itself is a treat. For starters I had the smoked Salmon which was excellent as expected, the accompanying bread basket was also great. For my main I chose the Rib Eye which came in a red wine sauce accompanied by potatoes and carrots. While not as nicely grilled as in the States it had a nice wine sauce which more than made up for this shortcoming. For dessert the Panna Cotta was quite good. Breakfast it's a little on the thin side, but you can order bulkier items off the menu. I picked Eggs Benedict with Salmon which was excellent. read more

Hmm, I've just seen Gigi L's review from May and more or less echo it. I'm gonna go for one extra star though as it did feel like a five star experience. The service is absolutely amazing and cannot be faulted. They manage to be incredibly attentive and timely without being in your face and overbearing - it's like they actually care about you having a great time. It is expensive but worth it for special occasions. Incidentally, I had the surf n turf and had been warned that it wasn't massive. It was delicious. And last but I guess not least, the atmosphere was really good. We had one of the booths so it was nice and private but still bustling. I had worried about it being snobby (had to buy chinos because jeans are not allowed) but my fears were allayed - it was just very nice. read more

Private dinner for about 12 in a separate room at the back of the restaurant was my first and hopefully not my last experience here. It was a set menu but each course was more delicious than its predecessor. Amuse bouche was a single oyster in it's shell with a luscious creamy sauce. This was followed by en excellent soup course - possibly potato and fennel - and finally a main of roast monkfish, a difficult fish to cook properly and usually either over or underdone. This was roasted to perfection and my only complaint is that the portion was very modest. The only vegetables on offer were very moreish new potatoes which disappeared quickly as the bowl passed along the table. Dessert was sinful, warm chocolate mousse that spilled onto the plate when attacked with a fork. The white wine was a superb Australian Sauvignon Blanc. No aircon or air cooling in this expensive venue makes for an uncomfortable experience over lunch in mid-July. There is no good reason why a top lunch venue in a Centre City Marriott should be so hot. The foyer and afternoon tea rooms were far cooler. Service was slow. 45 minutes for our dessert to arrive, all from a set menu. No apparent coordination or management of the team. Wonderful breakfast experience during our stay. We opted for the buffet due to our schedule and their selection. Beautiful layout and delicious foods. (£29/hot buffet; £21/continental). It's more of a fine dining morning experience where your server will deliver hot tea, coffee and even toast if you'd like. There is black and white pudding on the buffet if you'd like to try that for your first time or simply enjoy the delicacy. Their version of bacon (as compared to American bacon) is to die for. It's great to be able to get in and out if you're on a tight schedule and the hours are perfect. I believe they start seating at 6:30 am during the week. Friendly and accommodating staff.
