I stopped in after an appointment five minutes away. I wanted a quick, tasty healthy lunch that was also not too expensive. There is only one lunch special - the chicken with one side. That was my lunch today. I tried the sweet potato fries - reader, skip these. I am warning you. The restroom unfortunately had no supplies. I told a crewmember this fact, and she was aware of this. What a cute place! The chicken is amazing. Falls off the bone tender and seasoned well. Love their sauces especially the lettuce one which I found spicer than the jalapeño sauce. My sides were the yucca fries and the Spanish rice. They were ok. Rice also went well with the sauce. The service was awesome. The cashier took time to explain things and gave recommendations. Always meeting expectations! Above and beyond! We love ordering the family sized combo for work functions. Just right to feed 12-16 people and still more to go around. This time we opted to get two sides of plantains with veggie fried rice and the 4 whole chickens and it comes with 2 liter sodas. The plantains are always ripe and sweet. The chicken is tender and the rice is oh so delicious! It comes with two kinds of sauces. One with cilantro and the other with curry. Yum yum yum! The staff are very friendly and catering. My friends and I formed a party of 5, and my friend named this as the place to be, and their high Yelp marks resulted in it being so. So we all arrived, eventually, and took our seats - err, ordered then took our seats. You have to go that route, and it took us a decent amount of time to each order our meal and pay before going back to the seats. Call this fast casual, in that case. I will say that meals arrived decently quickly once the actual order went in. Portions are generous - I packed all the leftovers and it took 3 entire containers to do so. I still have rice left in my freezer a week later! That said, Peruvian flavors have a distinct American tinge to them compared to what I can find around here in North Jersey. Sorry, it is what it is. So, among the various dishes I was able to try: * The two sauces (green and pink) have a little kick to them. Different things to dip different places. * Stick with chicken over beef. Beef was a bit overdone. * Fries are fries - nothing much I can really say. Onions are onions, rice - well, there's white and brown rice, but in the end, rice is rice. * I picked sweet plantains and ended up with the fried tostones. Didn't bother arguing it but do check your order if you're taking out. * Macaroni looked very generic, but since I didn't take a bite, I won't judge it on appearances alone. * Drinks are expensive and size is tiny. Bring your own. * Crema volteada was... flan. Ultimate verdict: Not really anything that would make this a must-visit. Doesn't really set itself apart from other places. It pains me to think that I have NOT written a review for not only one of my favorite local take out "joints" but also one of my favorite restaurants in the area. This might be a fast casual restaurant but there is nothing fast or casual about the love and care that is put into each Peruvian dish that comes out of their kitchen. I live for their chicken (and a diet Inca Cola) and the sauces that accompany each of their coal roasted (the only one in the area) chicken. Not a fan of Chicken - don't worry they have a variety of seafood (I recommend the ceviche) or meat (I recommend the lomo soltado) options available. Their plantains are out of this world - some of the best I have ever had. The restaurant also offer a variety of family meals that always comes with enough food and more for leftovers. The are open for both delivery and pick up (no curbside at this time). I highly recommend this no-nonsense establishment for not only good Peruvian food but good food in general. read more

Solidly 4 stars for our first visit. This place has been on my list for at least a year. We were on our way to the airport and decided to stop for lunch. I was skeptical we could stop and eat quickly here but I was wrong. Parking is a little sparse, there are a couple if off street spots otherwise it's street parking. We arrived on a Sunday @ noon, no problem parking. The place is spotlessly clean and tables very spaced out for covid safety. Foodwise we had the seco bowl (as good as my peruvian Mom makes, so really good), the chicken, chaufa, plantain, beans bowl (delish) and a chicken chaufa (Wow so tasty And a ginormous portion). The very sweet young woman at the counter helped us navigate the menu and we had our food in front of us to dine in - in about 5 minutes. Beautifully presented and served with the yummy peruvian yellow and green sauces. Very, very good place. They even had Diet Inca Kola!! We'll be back with my parents and update the review because we'll surely try the lomo saltado, ceviche and jalea next time! Wish I had a branch of Rockin Chicken closer to New Haven. Stopped here for lunch to plan for my senior outing in two weeks to experience excellent Peruvian cuisine. The toasted corn kernels with sauce started the meal off with a bang. My dining partner had the quarter rotisserie breast of chicken with platanos maduros and fried rice [chaufa]. She truly enjoyed this treat. Anyone who knows us knows that we are suckers for a good plate of a chaufa. So after seeing a local review of RC, we thought it would be worth the gander! We did online ordering and chose the pollo chaufa (chicken fried rice) and the arroz con pollo bowl (chicken with rice). It was very clean inside and we received our order right away. We noticed some apparel for sale next to the counter, but kind of wished the staff mentioned it, maybe as an add on to our order. We have to admit we're feeling real spendy with our stimmy. The pollo chaufa has nice chunks of red peppers and satisfying pieces of egg. Not everyone gets this part right. We will say that it was very very good. The arroz con pollo bowl was a teaching tool. It taught us to READ THE DESCRIPTION! We had no idea what Hauncaina sauce drizzle was, but felt like the bowl had more than a drizzle. Cheese isn't always our thing. They have really good wings. I had the hot. The place is open and inviting . Very easy to order with meals and sides. It took about 15 minutes. I didn't mind but if you're tight on time , you might want to order ahead . It looks like they get a lot of take out . I parked behind the building. Wow! By now I have tried a few of the Peruvian restaurants in the area and I must say this one is my favorite by far. The atmosphere is chill and friendly and kinda hip with certain modern technology. Most people rave about their chicken hence their name and although their chicken is delicious my favorite so far is the Jalea which is a variety of fried seafood accompanied with yuccas fries. Very bad service. Today I placed an order at the Newington location for a chicken to eat in. The counter person told me it would take 1/2 hour for the chicken to come out. Since I was with my daughter who lives in NC, I told this person that my daughter was visiting and wanted her to try the charcoal chicken. We said we would wait. When the chicken started to come out, this person called "DJ" started handing out the chickens to the people who were there and who came to order to go after us. They didn't give us the priority we should have because we ordered before those people and because we were waiting at the table. So, I approached and asked this person where our chicken was and she told me the potatoes were still "frying." I asked myself, "Did the other chickens come without potatoes?" When our order arrived at the table, my daughter asked this person if she would like another sauce for her salad. This person replied that it was the "last" one. I asked myself again. The chicken is just coming out and there's no more sauce for the other salads? I went up to her to ask for rocoto sauce and she told me "there isn't any." The times I've gone to the restaurant to order something to take away and asked for rocoto sauce or extra sauce for the salad, her answer is always "there isn't any." Heard this spot had excellent chicken, perhaps my expectations were unrealistically high, chicken was moist and tender but I expected more from a 24hr marinade rotisserie product. Fried yucca was very good, fried perfectly. The salad was enormous with a dressing that was absolutely fabulous. Forgot to take a photo of the tamal I ordered which is corn masa stuffed with meat, boiled egg and olive, a little bland but the accompanying marinated onions made a huge difference in the flavor. Oh my lord we are both stuffed and happy piggies! Ordered pickup on the yelp app and couldn't be happier. We got the 1/2 chicken with 2 sides (chose sweet plantains and fried yucca), shrimp chaufa, aguadito soup, tres leches and a bottle of inca cola. The chicken and the chaufa were the stars- chicken moist and flavorful and chaufa was delicious! Came with yellow and green sauces which were both delicious as well. The yucca was ehh and sweet plantains were ok but the chicken/chaufa more than made up for their lackluster. Portions are huge and we still have rice left for work tomorrow. Came to about $45. Delicious meat with onions and tomatoes served with home made fried potatoes and rice. The toughest part of coming here is choosing what to eat.....I love it all. Finally got the chance to check this place out. Like the vibe in here and the decor, especially the wall art. Very friendly staff and they are very attentive. You don't have to wait to get seated, you can sit anywhere. The menu is simple and easy to choose from. The food is delicious - the chicken is packed with flavors, very tender and juicy. The Peruvian rice is your standard rice and nothing great to comment on. They give you 3 different type of sauce at the table. I wished that they served the fried corn (like the other Peruvian restaurant around) along with the rice and chicken. I did not care a lot for the fries that they served, not a lot of flavor and was ok. Throughout the years we have noticed the food quality getting worse, the fries used to be fresh, now they are clearly frozen and soggy. They took some foods off of the menu. They used to have waitresses serving you, and it felt very welcoming and friendly. Now you must go up to order and sit up and go back up to pick up your food. It's usually empty now, and I can see why. For the food prices and the quality of the dishes and service, I suggest going to Cora Cora, or even Vista Alegre. I once dated a Peruvian woman. BEST food ever. I missed it dearly until I found this spot. Working my way through the menu. The Papa Rellena is mouth watering. Have ordered the large family combo (4) rotisserie chickens with large fried rice and two sides twice for my family of 12-14 for events. Everyone loves the presentation of the salad, the taste of the chicken if phenomenal and they cut them into qtrs for you if you like. (Makes it much easier to serve) They give you plenty of sauces as well which is always a hit (green one slaps). The only thing neg to say is the fries get soggy from the moisture in the container, however i have a huge air fryer and just reheat in there for 6-10 min and boom crispy again. Service is good. I stopped by here this past Thursday by myself for dinner. The Rockin Chicken has been on my list of Yelp bookmarks for quite awhile so whenever I finally had a free evening and some time, I jumped at the opportunity to head there. The restaurant itself is located on the right of Franklin Ave. It's inside is bright and open with hardwood floors (or tiles that appeared as them) and a large number of tables with red seats. The walls are decorated with some photos from Peru as well as a single TV and the smell of charcoal from cooking their chicken permeates throughout making your mouth water. For dinner on this evening I went with the rockin chicken special and chose the 1/2 chicken with two sides for $14.99. I went with the fried plantains and the fried yuca for those two sides. Then I sat down and waited for around 10 minutes until my food was ready. Even though I was sitting at a table, they brought it for me all wrapped up and ready to go. This wasn't a problem for me but I thought it was odd. Maybe I should have waited for someone to seat me at a table instead of walking to the cash register to order? I truly don't know as there wasn't a sign saying anything like please wait to be seated. In any case whenever I got the meal back to the hotel I dug in. The 1/2 chicken consisted of a thigh and then a breast/wing and was a pretty good amount of food. It was super juicy in the middle and the skin had a great rub to it. While it was a well cooked piece of chicken I only wish that some of the charcoal flavor had gotten into more of the chicken. Once I had finished with the chicken I tried both the fried plantains and fried yuca. By this point in time neither of the sides were particularly warm. That meant that while I really enjoyed the flavor of the plantain that the yuca was just ok. It's not that there was anything wrong with it but nothing stuck out either. I learned about this place a few days ago when talking to a friend and decided to check it out when my co-workers suggested we go out to lunch. The food here is absolutely wonderful! I was extremely excited about the menu and wanted to order a bunch of stuff, but limited myself to just the tamal and a quarter mostrito chicken. My co-workers got similar dishes, with variations on their sides. We also got a side of yucca to share at the table. The food was amazing! The tamal, essentially a Peruvian tamale, had hard boiled egg and sausage inside. What everyone loved about this dish, though, was the side onion salad it came with; tangy and dressed in a lime juice dressing, it was the perfect complement to some of the fried-ness of our other foods. As far as the main entree, the mostrito chicken I got came with fried rice and french fries. While the french fries were a little cold on my dish, the fried rice had a lot of flavors that made it definitely worth the extra dollar. And that chicken, wow! I got a white meat part of the chicken (though I had asked for dark), but it was super tender! And you definitely could taste the smokiness from the charcoal that was used to cook the chicken. That's hard to find. The yucca for the table was also perfectly done. It was fried to the perfect crispiness on the outside so that it had a light crunch to it. Overall, we were extremely satisfied with this place. Would definitely consider coming back for another lunch with co-workers (or my wife). Perhaps it was just the demand of deliveries on a hot Summer day. I ordered food thru Grubhub, perhaps that was the first mistake. After the expired estimated time passed by, I called to ask for the status of order. I was told the driver left because the order was not ready for delivery. The person on the phone did not know what to do from there. I directed her to the Grubhub support number. They supposedly expedited a new driver. Well guess what. I never received the order after almost two hours. I called back and the girl on phone stated the driver never arrived. Service: Extremely slow and the waitress wasn't rude, but she also wasn't attentive at all. I had to get up to ask for things like salt and napkins. Food: Tostones- IMO they needed salt and were extremely bland. Lomo Saltado- The fries weren't crispy. The rice was dry. There wasn't enough sauce and most of meat and vegetable mixture was onions. The person I was eating with had more than enough beef on his plate and the pasta with huancaina sauce had good flavor, but it wasn't the best I've ever had. Aji- was delicious.
