Lomo Saltado

With so many great places to get Peruvian food in CT, it's only right that we went to check out one of the longest running Peruvian restaurants in CT and the oldest in Hartford! This authentic spot is serving delicious food! Loved the rotisserie chicken, Peruvian style fried rice, and Lomo Saltado. The food came out quickly, and the restaurant maintains tradition well. Everyone was so friendly, and the dining room was decorated nicely. Such a great spot to know about!

Pollo a la Brasa (1/2 Chicken)

**Please Note: this is only for the FOOD as we ended up getting Delivery and did not go to the restaurant** So we decided on takeout/delivery Friday night when we were in Hartford. It was the day after we had a comedy of errors when traveling and we just wanted to stay in. Scrolling through the options we came upon Piolin. After going through the menu we decided why not? Ended up ordering the Pollo a la Brasa (half a rotisserie chicken), the Mixtura Piolin (rib-bye, pork, chicken, shrimp and sausage), and the Ceviche Piolin (fish, shrimp, mussels, and calamari). This was more than enough food for the 3 of us and it hit the spot perfectly. The Ceviche was delicious, and honestly maybe we should have had 2 orders it was so good and full of flavor. The pollo was very moist and flavorful. And the mixtura...delicious. The extra sauce that came with the food for dipping was soo good. I can't even begin to describe it, some kind of curry adjacent flavor I think. Overall, we wished we had gone into the restaurant, but it hit the spot for a group of travel weary hermits on a Friday night in Hartford.

They let me down. They mysteriously to forget to give me an eating utensils. Maybe a dog would have thought to give me an eating utensil.

The Leftover House Chaufa after lunch! Leftovers!

Piolin on New Britain Ave in Hartford may not be the first place where I ate Peruvian food, but it's the first Peruvian restaurant that captured my attention. When the individual dining habits of a single person make way for the collective dining interests of a family, sometimes you don't visit certain places that you love as often as you want. That's unfortunately been the case with Piolin, but it felt good to be back. I have always loved Piolin's House Chaufa. If you like Chinese style fried rice, you're going to love Piolin's Chaufa. It's similar, but far more jam-packed with stuff. The House Chaufa has shrimp, calamari, shelled mussels, beef, chicken, egg and some veggies. You could go other ways with ingredients. All beef. All seafood. All chicken. But I like the variety. The rice arrived as a giant, neat mound. The rice had great flavor and texture. With the exception of the calamari, which is chewy by nature, the seafood, meat and poultry were all tender and tasty. I could go on and on about the accompanying "aji" sauce (aka the Green Sauce) and how it's zingy, garlicky, herby, mild heat makes it one of the best condiments in any cuisine. But I've done that in other reviews and I don't want to repeat myself. It's glorious! Piolin's Chaufa is so good, that it doesn't need the aji. Who's going to turn down aji though? It's the type of thing that gets you on a "No Fly" list. I can't emphasize how much of everything there was. Look at my pics, you can see the shrimp, calamari, chicken and egg busting out of the mound. After you look at the full mound pic, look at my leftover container. I may have three meals left and the ratio of seafood, chicken and beef to rice is still very strong. Service was welcoming and efficient. The restaurant is nice inside. The parking situation can be rough. However, if you're like me, I never let that get in the way of great food. I want to mention that there have been and may still be other area restaurants with the name Piolin. I've always assumed that they're related, but don't know. I do know that the New Britain Ave. Piolin has always been my favorite. If you've enjoyed Peruvian food at other area places, you're not alone. I have too. But in my experience, this Piolin is the best of them. Even the bread is really fresh and good. Five Stars

Can't say anything bad about this restaurant. They have been holding me down for decades. Large, savory portions. One meal is enough for two to share. Two thumbs up.

Beef and noodle soup

WoW. What a pleasant surprise! While it may not seem impressive on the outside, the inside of this Peruvian restaurant is filled with friendly staff and generous servings of amazing food!! I can see why it's a popular lunch spot for people who work in the area. (My DIL highly recommends the onion salad.) I can't pronounce the name of the soup I ordered, but it was green -- lol -- had beef and noodles -- and was a huge bowl of deliciousness!! It's something like beef with noodles. It was so amazing that before I even finished my meal, I placed another 2 orders to go! The other people in my group loved their meals also. Don't miss out on this gem!!!

I haven't been here in a long long time and I kinda regretted it. But me and my friends decided to come back and reminisce how good the food are in this place.. I have never eaten in such an authentic Peruvian food in my life. After such a long absence in my palate, I'm so glad I came back and brought some friends with me. Highly recommended.

I love their seafood croquettes and have tried them each time I visited and they've always been consistent. They're really crispy. I tried the calamari and while I wasn't crazy about it, it was tasty. Their chaufa with pork belly and lomo saltado are VERY tender and full of flavor. Tapas servings were HUGE and enough for a full meal AND leftovers to take home for lunch. We had a 5 pm reservation and arrived to an empty establishment. Astonishingly it was packed by 6 with guests waiting for a table! We had a perfect table in an alcove; ask for it if you're in a small group. There is also balcony seating that was unused while we were there, maybe that could be semi-private space for a little party too. Great playlist as well. Lived it all!!! Glad we were early to check the place out too to bottom!

The space itself is beautifully decorated, creating a really inviting atmosphere, and they even have a drive through, which is super convenient. On top of it all, the service was excellent. I enjoyed the dish, and the takeout experience was pleasant but I did take a star off because there were no utensils in my bag even though I made that request when I called. I was picking up from an outdoor event and had to go back to grab some which was a bit annoying. I thought the taste of the dish was great. The steak was tender and I like my sauce on the sweeter side so I was happy. The rice wasn't nauseatingly fluffy which I was wearing of because I've been having that issue with a lot of places recently. We ordered a bunch of food and it didn't take too long to come out, we had multiple rounds of drinks and the pacing on refills was also good. The main problem was the food. Most of the food was ok. I ordered lomo saltado a lo pobre and my husband ordered chupe de camarones. My dish was pretty good. The steak and eggs were over cooked unfortunately but again the meal was fine. My husband's chupe however was really not good. The shrimp was very overcooked, the broth was bland and oily and thin. He ate his egg and left the rest alone. All the dishes were pretty expensive so we asked to have our soup comped but we were told we could not because the waitress asked twice is everything was OK and my husband didn't say anything til the end (although I feel that if someone isn't touching their food it's usually a sign). Feels like a strange rule but i did honestly deduct 1 star because of this. The menu is large and expensive, so it does feel like a gamble if something is that bad but we still cant get 1 in 7 entrees comped. We are a peruvian family (6 adults) and we all felt similarly.

They didn't open, so the girlfriend and I needed to pull an audible. Went to the highest rated location near us, and found this place. First thing, this place is a night club. It's layout, the decor, the wait staff, the music playing, the metal detector in the front, and the dj stand. Everything about this place screams modern night club trying to get through covid. Thing is, this is a place that's making lemonade out of lemons. The staff are extremely friendly, the food service took a while but they kept the bread stocked. The breads this dense but soft inside. Kind of like a soft pretzel without the salt. When the food does come, it's awesome! Everything brought the flavor, nothing was under seasoned and the portions were large. Tacos were stacked with perfectly braised beef with ample toppings which all had a distinct and pronounced flavor. The chiveche was piled high with a limey, salty, savory bite. The fish was fresh, and the fried octopus was perfectly crisp and tender. The crepe was well executed, but it was kind of general. Bananas and Nutella, not much to say. I would've liked the bananas warmer, maybe a little burlee of sugar on the top of each to give it a sweet crisp? It was tasty, I just wanted a little more. Price was a little high, but the food coming out from the kitchen along with the portion makes it worth it. It does take a while, so be prepared for a wait. But now I can say that I had brunch at the night club, and that's a pretty awesome memory. That and the food is good, so if you want a funky place for great peruvian food, go hunt this place down!

My accompanied guests ordered the Tallarib Verde Con Bistic. The calamari was delicately deep fried in a light almost tempura batter. Absolutely delicious and completely cooked to perfection. Seasoned expertly. The side was yucca fries, which were to die for, again, slightly deep-fried and seasoned to perfection. Also, served were raw red onions, jullianed, with a little bit of tomato in it. Those were OK. The Tallarin Verde Con Bistic was a thin sirloin, cooked to perfection, and seasoned perfectly. The side was what looked like a spinach, pasta, spaghetti like, in a sauce. While I did not try the spaghetti, the sirloin was just beautiful. Taste abound. Located on Franklin Avenue in Hartford just north of the closed Carbones. Dinner for two, with the tip and a drink for one was $55 give or take a little bit. This was tremendous value, and I am now a fan of Peruvian food. Would be a great destination when you want to try something a little different. I will make sure to return here as soon as I possibly can, as the menu offered so many great choices. The menu wasn't big, but it looked powerful. The photo is the calamari dish that I ordered.
