Each is offered with three choices of dressing : chimichurri, mayo/ketchup, or pico de gallo. This last time I went for their "trifungo", a combination of roast pork, rice and plantains. The rice is quite dry, so be sure to take your fork and mix it all up so the pork can soften the entire meal. I came here for my favorite Puerto Rican dish Pastelón. They only served it Fri - Sun. Not many places make and sell it, so I was more than happy to drive here for it. It is basically a Puerto Rican lasagna. MofonGo's pastelón is always delicious and I always enjoy it with some empanadas on the side. I had planned on trying more from this place but the Pastelón was usually my goal so I never got the chance. I can't remember which empanadas are my favorite so I always change it up. They sell chicken beef, pork, and pizza. Then the last time I went, they didn't have the Pastelón It was still on the menu but The girl said they just didn't have any plantains. I would have happily picked some up and waited lol it was early Saturday afternoon but A Puerto Rican restaurant with no plantains for the weekend sounded suspect. Definitely disappointing... It still shows up on their online menu on the weekends( but not M-Th) so thankfully that means they still sell it. Service is can be a hit or miss. Certain workers really aren't cut out for customer interaction. Is there a more provocative name for a type of food than Mofongo? It sounds like something out of a Netflix Cavalcade of Dirty Comedians Show. What is Mofongo? It's mashed up fried plantains that originated in Africa and moved to Cuba, the Dominican Republic, and Puerto Rico in the New World. A Mofongo recipe appeared in Puerto Rico's first cookbook, way back in 1859, and today it's become closely tied to Puerto Rican cooking and culture. MofonGo (note the spelling) has three locations in Connecticut, and I visited their Hartford store in the Parkville Market yesterday. I love spicy food, so how could I have possibly resisted a dish called Mango Habanero Chicken. It came with ether rice or mofongo, and I went all in with mofongo ($12.99) and a side order of Papa Rellenos Bites ($3 for two pieces). The Rellenos were terrific- fried mashed potato balls filled with 'picadillo' (ground beef). They were loaded with that ground meat The Mango Habanero Chicken was stupendous! Huge hunks of fried chicken in a Mango Sweet and Habanero Hot glaze that harmonized beautifully sitting on top of a mound of mofongo that reminded me of mashed potatoes. The portion was pretty big, and the half I had for lunch was pretty darned filling. I actually had to drive through the main Parkville Market parking lot more than once to get a spot. Pro Tip - they have a couple spillover lots. I've previously commented on the Mofongo. You go in the industrial building and make a right and they are on the right. Lots of options and I was going to get an empanada but it was so huge - save that for next time. Stopped at the Parkville Market for a late lunch on a weekday. It was family's first time trying mofongo, and we were excited because this dish seemed unique compared to the rest of the great selections. We had the chicken mofongo and it was our favorite thing we got for lunch by far. It was addictive, had a good portion, and the flavors of the meat and citrus balanced each other out. For the amount of people, the wait was incredibly long, around 35 minutes. It was not peak time either, so I can't imagine how long someone would wait on the weekend or ordering during a popular meal time. I think the flaw here was that they tried to make 10 orders all out at once rather than portioning them out as the ingredients became ready, so I saw our meal and other orders pile up in the kitchen for 20 minutes. A small group had formed and everything seemed inefficient. The food was delicious but we ended up eating it alone and last whereas we wanted to eat multiple things at once. If the process improved, I think everyone will get their food faster, hotter, and there would be less stress with the piling orders in the end. read more

This Mofongo is in the brand new Parkville Market. I believe it's the same owner as the restaurant with the same name on Main Street. My fiancé is Puerto Rican and she's been dying to try this. Not only wasn't she disappointed but she absolutely loved it! She has Bistea with yellow rice and gandulas with chimichurri sauce. Also tostones with dipping sauce. It was ALL excellent!!! She called it real, and really good Puerto Rican food. The market is clean, well managed and COVID compliant. Tables cleaned (outdoors) in between diners and hand sanitizers available. For now, seating is only outdoors and you have to walk around the building to see both sides of restaurants. This bowl was a little expensive for the portion size. The market was cute and had a bunch of different types of food in it. There's ample seating to sit in the middle. The service was quick. I visited Mofongos for lunch, excited to try the shrimp mofongo. Sadly, I was disappointed. It lacked the flavor that I anticipated and even after the time we waited for it, it wasn't even hot. Possibly because the young lady taking orders was more consumed with her phone than being attentive to customers. We waited several minutes before even being asked to place an order. I likely wouldn't have submitted this review despite the disappointment at Mofongos because the other food we had (tacos and loaded fries) definitely overshadowed the bland mofongo and unseasoned shrimp. And while I did enjoy those other food options at Parkville Market, an unpleasant interaction with one of the employees in the parking lot made me feel it was necessary. As we were exiting, an employee blocked the exit in order to take boxes into the building. and when we asked if she could move, she parked, exited her vehicle, shrugged, pointed to a small opening behind us and rudely said "well this is employee parking so go the other way." When asked how we would know the parking was for employees considering there was no sign, she shrugged and said "they must have took it down." As my husband let her know, it costs you nothing to show a little kindness. I decided to play it safe and wanted a more authentic Mofongo combo and with pernil it didn't disappoint. Without salsa, chimichurri or mayoketchup this combo was still packed with flavor and didn't disappoint. So I've been a fan of Mofongo but lately the service has really turned a rotten leaf. The food always tastes great but the experience has given me a sour taste. We ordered two pernil rice bowls with extra sauce as well as sweet plantains in one of them. While waiting for our food, I was able to see them prepare the two bowls from where we were standing. First, they were low on rice so they didn't give us the full portion for each bowl. Next, they were also low on the sauce and just squeezed the remaining bit from the bottle instead of grabbing a new sauce bottle. After that, she capped the bowls and left it to be picked up by the customers. I was hoping it wasn't our order due to the lack of sauce but most importantly, I did not see her add the plantains to one of the bowls. When our name was called, we came up and they gave us those two bowls. I asked them if there were plantains in it and they said "yes I remember putting it in, they should be on top" However, this was not the same lady who assembled the order. Although she may have added it to the order ticket, the lady who prepared the order did not fully read it in full and missed the extra sauce and the plantains. I took out both bowls to show them that the plantains were not there and they insisted it was on top or on the side but it should be there. We went to find a table and inspected both bowls and low and behold--there was a lack of plantains from both bowls. I was so upset and kinda lost my appetite from the experience and just gave up because they kept insisting that they were in there. My sweet sweet boyfriend saw how visibly sad I was and went up to tell them for a third time that they bowls were incorrectly made. They ended up giving us the plantains. I'm not sure why the lady taking orders was so quick to assume that the order was made correctly when she did not prepare it herself. This could've been an easy fix if they verified with the other lady who made it but instead, gave both me and my boyfriend a hard time. Being from LA, I've tried most cuisines and dishes...but I had never had mofongo. I ordered the Adobe mofongo and a mango agua fresca and said "for here". The sullen cook (the person who usually took the orders was on a break, which matters in a moment) told me they had no mofongo so I'd have to get it with rice instead. I've had many many burrito bowls and other kinds of rice bowls...but what choice do I have?? I had already paid - even left a decent tip - let's give it a shot. The usual order-taking came back a few minutes later. Then I waited and I waited and I waited. A to-go order kept sitting on the counter. They kept announcing "Matt...order for Matt". Or maybe I heard "Mike...order for Mike" or "Max" or "Nat"?? What I definite did NOT hear was "John. Order for John." Four or five times. Over the course of 10 or 15 minutes. Finally the cook comes over, looks at the to-go bag and says "aren't you John? That's yours." I turned to the register-woman and I frankly lost my temper. "You had no Mofongo, you have no ice and you've been saying the wrong name for 15 minutes??? Cmon!!" Another patron in line said "Dude, the mofongo gets delivered at 1 - and *I* heard her say 'John'" . So maybe I'm the a-hole but the whole thing rubbed me wrong. What can I say can't go wrong with a little Mofongo in your life. So happy they have a location in the Parkville Market. I fell in love with Mofongo a long time ago when my friends mother introduced me to it. It was hard to find so it's great that this restaurant and is thriving and multiplying. My favorite is the Shrimp Lovers Mofongo with the Garlic Shrimp and Jack Daniels Shrimp. The Mango habanero chicken is pretty damn tasty also. The overload is enough for 2 people. It is half mofongo and half spanish rice topped with all proteins. I am trying trifongo for the first time now. Mofongo is made of raw banana. Trifongo is made of raw banana and sweet ripe banana. So delicious. Pastelon is available only from Friday to Sunday. That was also a good one to try. I was really looking forward to a good bowl of Pernil with tostones but I ended up being so let down. My meat was dry & flavorless. A good pernil should be juicy, flavorful and include some crunchy skin. There was none of this, if I didn't know better I'd say it was boiled. The beans & rice had no juice, just bare beans over white rice and the flavor just left a lot to be desired. Having recently been to Andrea's, which is a mile away and serves really good Puerto Rican food at cheap prices, I was disappointed with Mofongo. The food is good but you can find better right down the street. First, the food was warm, not hot, even though I ate it probably around 7 minutes of receiving it. However, the meat was really tender and the plantains were seasoned well and had good flavor. I also appreciated the salsa and Mayo-ketchup they put on the dish, added a nice tangy note to an otherwise heavy dish. Second, the tostones were really crispy and big, but I would have liked some Mayo-ketchup on the side or even salt/minced garlic. Will have to ask for that if I ever go back. In terms of price, feel like the pernil mofongo was a little overpriced (10 dollars for the whole bowl, which was ~6 inches in diameter), but the tostones made up for it (1 dollar for 3 big boys). If you're looking for Puerto Rican food specifically, would recommend going somewhere else but if youre at Parkville Market, Mofongo isn't a bad choice. read more
