We ordered the bread (must have, no question), bluefin tuna, tagliatelle, wedge salad, ribeye, mashed potatoes, and butter cake - every single dish hit. Upstairs on the 2nd was the move. You get a great view, but the vibe is way more relaxed. They had March Madness on the TVs, which made it feel fun and easygoing without sacrificing the quality of the experience. A little disappointing... here's everything you need to know. Parking. Street parking (4 hour meters) is limited. No valet. There is a private subterranean lot with a few parking spaces. Ambiance. Very nice. We chose to eat upstairs where there is a really nice balcony with a nice view of Rolling Hills, however it was cold so we preferred to eat inside. Unfortunately, toward the end of our meal, they sat a party of 12 which was really loud. The other two-top seated next to us (the rest of the tables has been pushed together for the party) opted to move due to the noise. Probably should have just reserved the entire room for the party instead of seating us and another couple there. Menu. Disappointing. I was looking forward to having something besides steak but every single dish (besides the vegetarian pesto pasta that has no protein and the salmon) was made with heavy cream (which I cannot have). I asked if they could make the branzino with a different sauce or make the Risotto without the cream (traditionally, it's made with stock, butter and parmesan anyway) and the server told me all the sauces are premade and they can't alter them. For $300 per couple, I was surprised to hear that there is no chef making the food, just cooks who assemble premade items. I personally feel it's uninspired and a little lazy to just pump all your dishes full of cream. Yes, cream tastes good so the dishes taste good. But anyone can do that-- it's not inventive. I had the wedge salad and my husband had the casear. He said the casear was fine, but nothing special. My wedge was mediocre at best. Now mind you, if a wedge salad is on the menu I order it no matter where we are. This one was just kind of weird. The 'scallion ranch' dressing tasted like it's just sour cream mixed with lemon juice and some chives sprinkled on top. It's thick like sour cream because it pretty much just is... sour cream. I'm glad I ordered it on the side. The blue cheese and bacon (pork belly) was good on it though-- good quality. They drizzled red wine vinegar over the lettuce though which was not good. It just felt like they were trying too hard to put their own stamp on what is traditionally a fantastic salad and the experiment failed. We both ordered the filet mignon, a side of potatoes (which were served with that 'scallion ranch' aka sour cream and were delicious), and brocollini which was just average. The steaks were excellent though-- perfect temperature, great cuts of meat. My only complaint is that it was oversalted so I had to cut the crust off because all I could taste was salt. A lot of people wouldn't mind this, but when I'm eating a really good steak, I like to taste the actual meat. Wine list. Great wine list. The individual glass pours are small though-- they are pouring five glasses to a bottle instead of four. Service. Okay. When I asked if particular dishes had cream, he kept having to go back to the kitchen and ask. I was surprised that a restaurant of this caliber isn't training the staff to know what allergens are in the (limited) menu. Prices. Overpriced for what you get. The price of the steaks were on par with other restaurants of this caliber, but everything else seemed overpriced. Granted, we'd just eaten at Spago the week before and for about the same price got better, more inspired food. Bottom line, if you just want a great steak and good wine, this place is a good choice. I'd suggest asking for light salt though as it was pretty heavy-handed. If you have allergies or are under the impression you can alter the dishes to remove something you don't like, don't come here. If you're looking for a diverse, varied menu, don't come here. read more

A dear friend of mine brought me to Rex for my birthday dinner. On Sunday nights they have Prime Rib and martini night. She knows how much I love a great martini and prime rib! A nice Birthday card signed by all the Rex workers was at our table when we were seated. It's nice to have a high end steakhouse in Redondo Beach, although there's been a number of them in the LA area including the South Bay. We both ordered the Queen cut prime rib, with creamed spinach, Yorkshire pudding and loaded baked potato, along with garlic bread. We both started off with martinis...one vodka, slightly dirty, dry for me, and my friend had a gin martini. It's nice that the martini is served with a full glass, and also a jigger over a bowl of ice. The garlic bread was perfectly grilled. The sides are definitely meant to be shared by two people. The baked potato was loaded with bacon, green onion, sour cream and butter. It was huge. The Yorkshire pudding was okay, Lawry's makes the best. The creamed spinach was better. My prime rib had a huge piece of fat on the side. Definitely smaller than the Lawry cut prime rib. I was presented with a birthday dessert which was ricotta with assorted berries. Nice touch. My husband and I came here to celebrate his birthday and our love anniversary, and it was the perfect choice! We chose this place since one of clients recommended it. The steak was absolutely delicious--truly top-notch--and the sides were just as amazing. We were greeted with complimentary champagne upon arrival, which was such a thoughtful touch, and before leaving we were surprised with sweet rum shots that were so yummy. For dessert, we had 3 different kinds but the butter cake?! OMG! Lol as someone who is very particular about butter cake (it's one of my favorites), I can say this one was outstanding and definitely satisfied me. Our server, Francisco, was wonderful--attentive, kind, and made sure we were well taken care of throughout the night. If I could make one small suggestion, it would be to add an additional server after 6 PM since it does get quite busy. We did not have reservations, the available seating was at the small counter bar in the back overlooking a liquor wall. The decor was typical of other restaurants and simple, nothing stood out. Though it did not appear to be busy, service was slow. I overheard the bartender speak about how the upstairs was keeping him busy. This explains how we were sitting in front of him and the service was slow. We ordered drinks and the Octopus for a starter. The octopus was served on the cold side, not appealing. The drinks were weak, not sure if the alcohol serving was miscalculated but weak. I should have paid closer attention. We ordered a steak for our main dish and the Branzino. The steak was overcooked, and the Branzino was cooked differently than I had before. Ask questions before ordering it. If the waitress even knows how it's cooked. Rex is my go-to steakhouse in the South Bay. Food: Let's start with the appetizers ... Steak Tartare - Rex's steak tartare is fantastic. I'm a huge fan of steak tartare and try it everywhere I go. I can honestly say that this is one of the best I've had. The steak tartare is served with bread, similar to Texas toast (not necessarily a thick cut, but buttered and toasted sourdough with Maldon salt). While I prefer a dryer toast with my steak tartare because of the richness, Rex's toast still works well. Captain's Shrimp - The shrimp is really good. It's a grilled shrimp. At first, I was disappointed that Rex didn't have a traditional shrimp cocktail (with boiled, chilled shrimp and cocktail sauce), but I've come to appreciate the Rex's grilled shrimp. Again, it's really good. Crispy Spring Onion - This is Rex's answer to onion rings. Spring onion bulbs (which form at the base of young onion plants and tend to be somewhat sweet) are coated in batter (somewhere between your traditional onion ring batter and a tempura batter) and fried. These too are really good. For salads ... Rex Wedge - Rex's wedge is a very satisfying salad. For some reason, despite its simplicity, my wedge salads at home never taste as good as Rex's wedge. The iceberg lettuce is cut into a 1-2 inch disk, rather than a wedge. To me, this results in better looking plating and creates a nice platform upon which the bacon chunks, blue cheese, cherry tomatoes, and dressing can rest. For mains ... Short Rib - Rex's short ribs with pommes (basically mashed potatoes) is typical but very satisfying. Pork Pluma - Pluma is a loin cut that comes from the back of the neck of the pig. To me, unlike your typical pork chop or loin, pluma tastes richer because it has more fat ... and (of course) it has been called the "wagyu of pork." I think of pork as dry; the pluma is not. Rex's pluma is terrific. However, when I first had it, it came in a larger cut, and I it is now served in smaller medallions ... so be forewarned that you may be left wanting more. But it's so good. For steaks ... Main Event - For any steakhouse, the steaks are the "main event." I personally prefer the ribeye cut because of the increased marbling and resulting richness. Rex's ribeye is very good. The quality of the steak is great, and my steaks have been cooked to the right temperature. Rex cooks their steaks on a wood grill, which I like because it results in a slight a slight char. I also prefer a slightly thicker cut (1 1/2 inch) for my steaks. Rex's ribeye tends to be a thinner 1-inch cut, so I've also ordered the Cross-Cut NY, which is thicker while maintaining some marbling. Regardless, all of the steaks at Rex are great. For cocktails ... Milk Punch - If you've never had milk punch (and even if you've had milk punch), you need to try Rex's milk punch. It's fantastic. I am also a fan of the Samurai Old Fashioned ... but try the milk punch. Service: The service at Rex is friendly and professional. While Rex can get busy (as they have seating and events not only on the first floor, but also on the second and third floor), the servers try to be as attentive as possible. Bottom Line: For me, Rex is my go-to steakhouse in the South Bay. There is Arthur J in Manhattan Beach and 555 in Long Beach. In between, there is nothing better than Rex. read more

By far, my favorite steakhouse in the South Bay. The Rex offers the best food, service, and ambiance in Redondo Beach and beyond. The appetizers are incredible, including the newly released French Onion Soup, Captain's Shrimp, and the Bluefin Tuna with its citrus flavor. The salads are terrific too - my favorite is the Caesar. And if you get the bread, make sure to dab a bit of the butter on it. Yes, it's gluttonous, but you're welcome! For entrees, you can't go wrong with the steaks, including the filet and ribeye (my faves), especially with the Point Reyes blue cheese or chimichurri. The quality of the meat is better than anything around, and the sear, seasoning, and woody flavors are incredible. If you don't want steak, I have to recommend the tagliatelle pasta in duck ragu, which is probably my favorite dish on the entire menu. It bears repeating: if you haven't had their tagliatelle, go back and try it. It's unbelievable. The swordfish with risotto, the branzino, the short rib, and even the burger are all amazing. To cap dinner off, get the butter cake - it's hands down the best you'll ever have anywhere. The staff is experienced and friendly. This is another nice restaurant where the music isn't blasting so you can really enjoy some great food and conversation over their cool, crafted cocktails and fine wine selections. We did not order any liquor as my date could not drink.(taking medication) we felt that was an issue with them amongst the main reason, we were not of the proper skin color. The hostess informed us, quite seriously, that those seats were "actually taken" by two people who were "coming back." Coming back from where? A cattle drive? A pilgrimage? A quick trip to another dimension? The seats had clearly been empty long enough for us to admire them, consider them, and emotionally commit to them. We said okay and waited. And then -- plot twist -- another couple walked in fresh off the street and were promptly seated. Not at a mystical, reserved-for-ghosts table. Not in a secret VIP section. Just... seated. At this point, my friend and I (two completely normal-looking women who shower regularly and understand how steak works) started to wonder if we had unknowingly violated a dress code or aura requirement. Were we supposed to bring a chaperone? A briefcase? A monocle? It genuinely felt like we were being politely swerved. If the bar was reserved, just say that. If you don't want walk-ins at certain seats, just say that. But the "they're coming back" explanation followed by immediately seating someone else? That's not a great look. We left and took our appetites -- and our money -- somewhere that understood the revolutionary concept of seating available guests in available chairs. Went here last night for a birthday dinner. We go to Catalina Ave weekly for lunch or dinner but have never been to The Rex. WOW! This is going to be our new go to place. The Old Fashion is the best in town with one big beautiful clear cube (zero cloudiness). The rib eye is to live for, the tomato bisque soup was worth the visit along with the short ribs a few people in our group had. The filet was cooked perfectly. If you order the Tartare don't order extra bread because it's the same one and the tartare comes with a lot of bread. The Shrimp were well seasoned and very fresh. It's not a shrimp cocktail, the shrimp are grilled and served with a side of cocktail sauce. The whole ribeye was much better than the little 3oz pieces on the tasting menu. Next time I would not order the smaller portions and instead would order a ribeye or filet. Will try the Wagyu as well next time. The sides were a hit especially the Mac n Cheese. So good. I could eat the entire dish. The desserts were just okay. Good but nothing to write home about. Kind of tasted like whipped cream. The coffee was good and the cup was so cute. Very different and chic. I'm so happy to have a steakhouse close to us instead of having to drive all the way to BH or even Manhattan Beach. One of my clients rented this place for an anniversary function. We had a private rooftop room which was a great space for the celebration!! The menu for the event was fixed, but everything was so danged delicious!! Walking hors d'ouevres included yakitori beef (so stupidly tender!) and truffle caviar chips!! (whomever thought of these chips needs to be crowned!!!) once seated, we had hawaiian crudo (super fresh) and caesar salad and a kale salad and the most amazingly crusty grilled bread with seasoned butter! Dinner included rib eye (cooked to perfection), truffle chicken, and salmon. All of which were very good. On the side we had mashed potatoes, broccolini, and roasted mushrooms. Too much of the steak was way undercooked and they fixed it but it was a longer wait. Service is great and a trendy, popular place, but like a hot spot for trendy reasons rather than great food. That said some of the apps and sides are good to excellent, but the steak should be star of the show and flavor, quality, and cooking all fall short of the mark. read more

Sadly, tonight was not The Rex at its best. While what little food we actually were served was good, the amount of wait time was unacceptable. The server reported they were not short-staffed, just had a lot of people. After having sat at our table for an hour and 50 minutes, we made the decision to leave before our entree and sides arrived. (Note that only 1 table out of 5 had received their entree in the time we were there.) The manager was apologetic and covered the cost of the salad and bread we had. We were very disappointed as this was supposed to be a special celebratory night out for us. At least the food at Proudly Serving around the block was not just quickly served, but was SUPER yummy! Oh - and one thing I we didn't mention to management that I hope they will read and correct -- the large-screen TVs in the 2nd floor dining room had a lovely beach-at-night scene that was interrupted about every 15 minutes by *bright* commercials, completely altering the ambience of the room in the worst of ways. Getting a subscription to a service ad-free would really make the ambience the 5 stars you are hoping for! I am not sure we'll be back as there was no reason given for the wait and therefore no reason to believe that we won't encounter than again. read more

So it was my wife's bday and I wanted to switch it up and take her to a steak house different then fleming's. After doing some research I made the decision of making a reservation here. Once we arrived our server Chase gave us the menu off the top of his head which was pretty cool since it put the menu into perspective having never been here before. We started off with drinks per his suggestions and got the royal flush which was tangy, zesty and had a bit of spice due to the ginger. To start we got the Cesar salad which was delicious! The lettuce was crisp and the grated cheese on the salad melted at every bite. The croutons they used were also amazingly good and tasted like biting into some lays chips. We both got the NY strip medium well with a side of chimichurri sauce and it was cooked to perfection! My wife is not one to get medium well but she loved how it was cooked. The restaurant has a nice setting and luckily we landed a table on the second floor which added a little romantic touch. Since it was my wife's birthday they brought her a complimentary desert which was a nice touch! We will definitely be coming back for another special occasion. read more

The restaurant behemoth (it's 3 stories! & has an elevator if you want to skip the stairs) was easy to spot & there were several open metered spots by the entrance. Score! Upon entering, you're hit with seasonal decor to celebrate Christmas & delish scents floating en route to our private room on the 3rd floor. As we waited for our colleagues to arrive, I started with a fun pear cocktail, admiring the gorgeous sunset while chatting about holiday plans. Our guy, Brody, was friendly & proficient in alternating between executing drink orders & passing hors d'oeuvres. The tuna tartare cones were cute, but too small of a bite & not cool enough to highlight its freshness/butteriness. The grilled shrimp was a tad overcooked/rubbery & missing cocktail sauce. Of the 3, the avo toast had more flavor & best executed. The salad was a caesar, no wow factor, just a side of greens. But that simple bread... wowza, so buttery & crisp... your hips won't be happy but it's so nom-nom awesome! Our main course consisted of a perfectly seasoned & cooked medium-rare tomahawk (but not carved well, too much fat) & delish roasted chicken. I paired it with a refreshing non-alcoholic Piñacillin. While the tomahawk was tender & tasty, it's the chicken that's the "winner winner chicken dinner." Soooooo tender & succulent... with a delish jus that you might want to lick the plate. LOL ^_^ No comment on the pasta but it was for one of our pescatarian bosses. The sides were a good pairing with the rich proteins, but I would have preferred either Zucchini (tomato, grana padano) or Roasted Wild Mushrooms (pecorino) over the mac & cheese. The asparagus had a nice bite & char, while the baby potatoes were fork-tender & addicting. We shared holiday tradition stories prior to dinner, & a fun round of white elephant exchange. The gag gifts were especially hilarious! Some minor menu execution blips, but Brody's amazing service made up for it & provided us an amazing party to close out the year!! Definitely coming back to taste what Chef Walter Nunez has to offer... happy holidays!
