Dirty Lemonade at The Renfrew Pub

Okay Yelpers. It's October and that means it's another trip into scenic BC! This time we traveled to Sooke. We decided to visit The Renfrew Pub in Port Renfrew. It was a long drive there over uneven twisty roads but so worth it. The pub is at the foot of a fishing pier. It is rustic inside with dark wood and furniture. There is a pool table there and a very large full bar. The staff was friendly and efficient. I always order a Poutine when up here and this one was very good. I also ordered the 2 piece Rockfish and chips. Yes I know that's a ton of French fries with the poutine but I don't care. The fish was battered just right. It was warm and flaky. The tartar was house made and very good. Mrs Billy D had a seafood chowder that smelled so good. She raved about it. White chowders and soups are not my thing but if that came in a red or beef based broth I would have been all over it. Prices are on the high side and the extras are up charged but that is clearly posted on the menu. The prices were no problem for us but I like to include that for my dear readers. I would say we will return but there are a couple other places we want to go visit. We like the spread the love.

An island gem! We had an incredible time experience at this pub. We really enjoyed the ambiance. The view from the patio is gorgeous! That's the only one of its kind on this side of the island. The food was amazing from start to finish. The tofu quinoa salad with the addition of seaweed was very interesting and tasty! The calamari, while not as crispy as we'd hoped, was still enjoyable. The mains were delectable - the fish & chips were fried to perfection, with a batter that was simply right. The veggie burger and fries were good. The service was great especially when it got busy. Please make sure to arrive early as this popular spot can get quite crowded during lunch and dinner hours. A definite must-visit for both locals and visitors. Thank you to the team for creating such a wonderful pub in Port Renfrew!

A weeks vacation had us exploring this amazing area after spending the Labour Day long weekend with family in the Okanagan. In spite of the crazy slow drive to Port Renfrew because of construction and a taxi driver that thought 40 kms an hour made sense from Sooke up, we enjoyed the drive. Once we rocketed the idiot cab, we rolled through the curves, corners, and one lane bridges and had a great final 30 kms into the end of the road at Port Renfrew. We had brought provisions to take care of our needs for the condo we had rented, but always like to scope out the local establishments when given the opportunity to do so. The pub area is a hotbed of activity with those leaving, and returning, from the West Coast trail, whale watching, deep sea fishing, protesting, and enjoying all the West Coast to offer. The pub is a meeting place, that could easily mail it in, due to the number of folks looking to eat there (there was a significant queue at 2PM) with few choices. We were very pleased with the Covid precautions in place, but even more impressed with the friendly and attentive service, along with the quality of the food. It may be well off the beaten path on Vancouver Island, but if you find yourself on the southern West Coast near the end of the road going North stop in and enjoy!

Way out, on the water, pub of Port Renfrew. Full wood interior, cozy vibes, relaxing and laid back environment. Classic bacon burger with fresh bun. Patty was thin, but flavorful with fresh cut fries. Good beer list. Risotto was rich with perfectly cut salmon. After a long day of travel, this pub is comforting, relaxing, and tasty. +1 to the extra friendly server.

    Seafood chowder (half portion)

Came here in early September for an early dinner. The service was great! We sat inside because it was a bit chilly for us to sit on the patio. However, they gave us a table where you can have a glimpse of the water. They also fullfied my "unconventional" request of splitting the soup into two bowls so my dining companion and I can both try it (we weren't that hungry). And my request to substitute the fries that accompany the baby back ribs with another portion of coleslaw. The seafood chowder was loadedddd! It had big chunks of sockeye salmon, cod, clams, bacon, carrot and celery. I really like the consistency of the soup, creamy but not overly rich and thick (when too much flour is added as a thickening agent). Even though the soup was split into 2 portions, we both agree that is was pretty substantial. I order a full rack of pork ribs with coleslaw only (don't worry, I shared my food). The meat was tender and came off the bone easily. The bbq sauce flavour wasn't memorable. But the coleslaw was good - evenly dressed and not too saucy. My dining companion really like the seafood bouillabaisse. He was sick, so it was like an upgraded version of chicken soup for him. After our meal, we chatted with the server and they gave us tips on what to check out around the area!

Burger and a beer ... delicious!

After a six night, seven day solo hike on the West Coast Trail, the Renfrew Pub was my first stop after registering off the trail with Parks Canada. I was looking forward to a non-freeze-dried-just-add-water meal and mercifully the Renfrew Pub didn't disappoint. I had a burger and a beer (well, three beers to be accurate lol) and man was it delicious. Service was prompt and friendly, and I was well taken care of by the staff. My only quibble with this establishment is that I couldn't take my backpack in with me. They made me leave it on a bench outside of the restaurant out of my view. Considering the substantial dollar value attached to the pack and its contents this made me a little nervous. But apart from that, should I tackle the WCT again in the future, I'd definitely make the Renfrew Pub my first stop again after finishing the trail. Five stars.

Couple of great local craft brews on tap

Port Renfrew is a little up-and-coming vacation spot on Vancouver Island. Going into a two-night stay, we read up on the fact that there would be very few options for lunch or dinner on a Sunday and Monday night stay. We got into the pub on Sunday evening, and it was very busy. The wait staff was fantastic, offering recommendations to us out-of-towners (from 3,000+ miles away). My wife really wanted some fresh local fish, and the Salmon burger blew both of us away. It wasn't breaded, fried, or anything like that. It was a very fresh grilled or roasted chunk of dark pink local salmon on a fresh bun with light toppings. All of this allowed you to truly enjoy the freshness of that fish. Our sides were fantastic, too. I got the Caesar salad with mine, and it was very good. We also had a 2-piece order of the fish and chips, and it came out very nicely browned. Tasted like good, homemade tartar sauce with it. One of our favorite things about the pub was its superb offering of all the local craft beers from the island. You had a wide variety to pick from including Northwest pale and IPA, plus several good dark options. Here's the true marker of how much we both liked the place... we went back again Monday night for a second round! I'd love to go back and try out some of the other restaurants, but we would not hesitate to go back here to the Renfrew Pub. It also has a huge outdoor deck that sits right on the water if the weather is nice.

The deep fried pickles are always good and crispy (we already ate 4 of them before taking a pic), this was the first time having the Black and Blue salad with chicken (absolutely delicious and filling, there was enough for two), and the plain Jane Burger is always good and fills the craving for a good burger. English style pub is a cut or two above the rest, thanks to good food and a helpful staff…read more THE ROSES: If you're an Anglophile, Fox and Hounds is a great pub to visit. Wonderful olde English atmosphere. Very good selection of beers on tap. Staff is very helpful in setting up patrons with dishes that allow for dietary restrictions (like gluten intolerance). What I particularly liked is that they were able to make fish and chips for me that was panko breaded rather than battered. I know battered fish and chips is the 'English' way, but few restaurants this side of the Atlantic get battered fish right. All too often it's too much batter, or the fish is really greasy. I didn't feel like taking a chance, so the kitchen breaded my fish and it was really nicely done. The bread pudding is also a standout. THE THORNS: None worth mentioning. THE VERDICT: Fox and Hounds is one of those rare pubs that puts as much (or more?) thought into their food as they do their beer. It's a wonderful 'little bit 'o Britain' in the quiet backwater town of Ladysmith BC Highly recommend!
