Ucluelet Brewing - Harbor view pale ale

Decent beer, friendly service and surprisingly nice views…read more This is an above average, but not amazingly good little brewpub in a cute town. The normal selection of beer is a pretty good flight of typical beers. The party wave hazy IPA from the normal line up stood out as both true to the style and very good. Not too sweet either. The featured limited release tap while we were there was the Brewmaster's Keep imperial stout aged on bourbon soaked oak (but apparently not actually in bourbon barrels). That was really fantastic, creamy and with just hints of bourbon sweetness. Our family of four was lucky enough to have the wrap-around table in the window looking out over the harbor and at the mountains, which was a great view. The food was about the same, but maybe a notch below the beer. I really enjoyed the beet, kale and feta salad, but the Reuben sliders my wife got weren't quite as good and the portions were on the small side. They had vanishingly little food for kids and even the "kids mac and cheese" wound up with onions in it and my son didn't eat it. They did make a bowl of plain rice for my daughter which she ate and they ate the chips that came with the Reuben sliders. The service was attentive and friendly the whole time and they had all the beers they had on tap also to go in cans.

Seating inside and out, although with the rain they were doing their best to accommodate everyone. I thought the staff worked really well together and just wanted to thank our beer-tender as she ran the place so smoothly. I think her name was Alisa. Would stop in again.

Most of the arcade games were off - broken or unplugged, not sure which. Fun atmosphere otherwise with a large blackboard for the kids to draw on. I had the deer burger with fries, upgraded to poutine. The fries are crispy outside and soft inside, and that gravy was delicious! The burger itself was juicy, soft bun, but the sprouts for the crunch and the chipotle mayo for the extra flavor made this one a winner! For dessert, I had the ginger molasses bread with ice cream. Moist, flavorful, and the French vanilla ice cream was out of this world.

The restaurant was actually larger than I expected. They had loads of bench-style tables and seats. There was a run-down arcade in there as well with some claw machines that looked like the candy prizes had been in there since the 90's... We looked around for the bowling alley that was supposedly there but found out that it was taken out. Service was friendly and relatively attentive. I had my first poutine of the trip. It ended up being saltier than I had hoped. I ordered the Korean Beef Noodle Bowl. Not that I needed more food, but for the price it was, I expected that there would be more food. The flavor was okay. Nothing to write home about. As I got to the bottom of the bowl, I found a pool of oil just sitting there, being absorbed by the few pieces of my leftover sad noodles. It was a LOT of oil... I wanted the bowl because it had a lot of veggies alongside the beef, so I at least got that. It's nice that it's open late for visitors to dine in and has a wide variety of foods, but none of our party's food stood out and wow'ed us, so... it was fine. Again, they were lovely, friendly people, so if you're looking for someplace welcoming to get fed in Ucluelet, I recommend coming here.

I got a flight of the glowing embers ale, kelp stout, dark lager, and spruce tree ale. Dark beers are usually my favourite, but my favourite out of this batch might have actually been the glowing embers, which was described as a candied smoked ale. The caramelly/smoky combination was great. The kelp stout was interesting - I found it had a slightly vegetal finish but wasn't overtly kelpy. If you like stouts, you'll probably like this. All the beers were very enjoyable. The spruce tree ale and kelp stout are probably the two to try if you want something uniquely local. The Japanese street food truck outside was also fantastic! You can grab food from them and bring it inside the brewery. They also have bar snacks (pretzels, chips) inside. The building is cool. There are front and back patios, a spacious main floor, and a hidden, cozier second floor. The bartender that served me was very friendly. I noticed that the staff was very diligent about clearing tables inside but not so much outside, I saw a table on the patio that had abandoned empty glasses sitting on it when I went out to pick up my food truck order and still there when I left.

Bar service was very happy to recommend a few things for our tastes and we got to try some great beers. Aside from the experience I love the commitment this brewery has to sustainment with water care initiatives, partnering with farms to use their spent grain and leveraging hydro power.

We were pleasantly surprised by a small, but nice brewpub with board games to boot. They didn't have any tables for four because of reservations, but we were able to sit at the bar and set our kids up with a game of Battleship while we had some beer and food. The beer wasn't world class, but also didn't disappoint. The unicycle sour IPA, was my standout, but the porter and monster mash IPA were also good. The rest were fine, but not amazing. The food was (if anything) better than the beer. The plain cheese pizza my son got was good and had nicely browned cheese all over. The sauce was a bit on the sweet side, but not unpleasantly so. I'd probably lean more into pizza next time even if it's a bit too carb heavy. The spuds (potato wedges) were only OK. I got the Thai chicken salad, which was spicy with great greens and good chicken. Nice and fresh. My wife seemed to be less enamored of her bahn mi burger, but still said it was good. The service was attentive and happy to accommodate us and our kids. Would definitely come again.

Definitely not the case at Pastimes on our visit this evening. Our server Teresa was excellent, even though she was quite busy. She happily answered our questions about the food, and the choices we were going to make. We shared a house salad which was plentiful and had a nice accompaniment of dried cranberries and almonds. Both items are things that are often scrimped upon as they are complimentary items that aren't an inexpensive addition. For our mains I got the meatloaf with mashed potatoes, and the lovely K the turkey dinner. Both were excellent, with the meatloaf wrapped by bacon, likely the local Hertel variety which was incredible. Real mashed potatoes and veggies cooked to my perfect taste along with gravy. Easy 5 out of 5, as was K's turkey, also accompanied by mashed potatoes and veggies. The decor is pure sports bar, but the sound on the tv's was down so you could actually talk without the usual noise. The Canucks were in Nashville so we watched the game and enjoyed a very very nice meal. Sadly we couldn't finish it all, and with a travel day tomorrow we had to send it away, what a shame. We will most definitely be back the next time we are in Port Alberni.
