We sat outside as they were all full inside already. The service was really friendly and when we wanted to move tables they were super nice about it. We ordered some Guiness, seafood cakes, scotch egg, seafood chowder, beef dip and a pot pie. I'm not sure if it's because we waited 1 hour for the food. But everything tasted pretty good. The serving sizes are large so make sure to share. Tip: don't come here hungry because you will be waiting for awhile. We were welcomed by a grand hearth, embers aglow and the aroma of good wood smoke. The dark timber post & beams, candle light, and lead glass evoked another realm. The service is friendly and impeccable. And the food, O, the food... I was in the mood for something fresh and light so I ordered the beet salad with arugula. Splendid. Heaps of toasted walnut halves, a generous mound of arugula, and dollops of goat cheese accompanied perfectly cooked yellow beets, dressed with a balsamic reduction. My companion had the smoked salmon chowder which was as good as it sounds. She also enjoyed the chicken pie and marvelled at the perfection of the pastry top. We were too full for dessert but it all looked so good. I must return for the sticky date pudding. We came with our small kids and ate take out in the parking lot, they're real strict on it so don't make the drive over with kids! When we arrived, we had to wait around 45 minutes for a table. It was a beautiful day out, so it was nice to wander the gardens and take some photos of the beautiful grounds. Although there were empty tables, I understand how it is right now to, help to service them all. So I was not upset about that at all when we got seated service was fast and friendly.I ordered the Publican burger and my wife had a salmon Caesar salad. Although they are extremely busy on Sundays and Mondays and they don't take reservations, get there early when they open at 11 and put your name on the waiting list so you can enjoy the grounds while they prepare your table. Where to begin? This is a cute pub on a great property that doesn't look like much at all. When you get there, you're greeted with a wonderful trellis walkway that sets the mood for a wonderful meal. This is pub food, but not pub food. The food is hearty and welcoming, yet delicate and flavorful. If I could give the food 6 stars I would. Seriously cool little English style pub on outskirts of Nanaimo. Ordered the Roast Beef dinner and was blown away with the portion. The food was amazing, tasted home made with love. They had just changed their menu, so I didn't get to try some of the things my friends had been raving about, but they certainly deliver on everything they put out. Locally sourced meats and veg. Their sausage was so juicy it was silky in texture! Omg The chicken pot pie was sooo yummy, texture and taste was popping with flavour and the flaky crust was so light and airy but perfectly crunchy. First time dining at the Crow and Gate, meeting friends for lunch on a Sunday afternoon. The restaurant has loads of old English pub style charm and is located in a beautiful rural setting. The service was very good. The food was "3/4" excellent. Meaning: my wife ordered the fried oysters, our friends the beef dip and a shrimp sandwich. I ordered the house burger and was so disappointed! Each of the other meals looked wonderful: large servings, lovely presentation. But my burger was small and plain. Delicious and nicely prepared (the bun tasted freshly baked), but I finished it in about three bites, then watched, still hungry, as my wife and our friends actually had a hard time finishing their meals. I'd definitely go back to Crow and Gate but order something other than their burger. Honestly, compared to other $20 burgers I've had elsewhere, this one was puny and somewhat pathetic! read more

I've been to the Crow & Gate Pub a few times and love it. The food is great, as well as the atmosphere and staff. Every Sunday they have roast beef night and it is out of this world. It's hard not to order everything from the menu as it's always a tough decision on what to get. BUT! I would highly recommend the beef dip and the roast beef sandwich. It's a great pub for all seasons, as you can sit outside in the summer on the patio and stay nice and cozy inside during the cooler seasons. I am looking forward to going back! read more

The wait took while a while, I think we were waiting about twenty+ mins for our mains. We tried the shrimp open face with salmon chowder and the chicken pot pie with oyster stew. I really enjoyed the stews, so delicious. I's say the flavors here are not overly spiced and better for those that like more neutral flavors. Loved the space as it reminded me of Lord of the Rings. Low ceilings, wooden tables and walls. Tons of memorabilia from the 40s, 50s, 60s. I liked the fact that you walked up to the till, ordered your food and drinks, paid for it and looked for a table. Once the food was ready, someone brought it out. There is no waiting for the waitress/waiter to bring you a menu, grab your order and bring the food. I ordered crab cakes with a green salad which was delicious and fresh. Trust me on this one. Whether you know it or not, if you're passing through the Nanaimo area, you want to go here. Whether or not you want to go to a pub for food, you will come here, and you will have an amazing time with amazing food at the Crow and Gate Pub. With a party of three friends, I went to Crow and Gate, a well-known English pub, for the first time today during our trip from Vancouver, after receiving several recommendations from various sources. We went in at around 4:30pm and the Pub was not too busy, but one could definitely tell that, once stepped through those wooden doors, one would be in for a unique dining experience of epic proportions. Let's put it this way - they have their own sign on the road 5 minutes out, directing you to the Pub's semi-isolated location, which not only means that they have the money for their own sign on the street, but that they mean serious business. Once you arrive at the parking lot, walk through the scenic, charming route flanked by old cottages which do remind of an old English setting, and go into the Pub, you should go straight to the bar since it's bar service only here. From there, you find a table and seats enough for your party, grab your drinks if you haven't already, and then wait patiently for your food which will be served quickly to your table. Some dishes that were ordered by my party were: Beef dip and salad $16.95 1/2 bratwurst plate (full order is $14.50) Chili and garlic bread $10.50 Chicken and vegetable pie $12.50 Steak and mushroom pie $14.50 Farmer's pub plate $14.65 Honestly, everything was delicious. I could not find one bad thing to say about this fine establishment. There was absolutely nothing wrong with any of the dishes - the beef dip was presented well with a great au jus. The bratwurst was surprisingly tender. The chili was large in portion size, but was a symphony of flavours in my mouth. The pies were delicious, as one would expect of proper English pies. The accompanying garden salad with each entree, served with a vinaigrette that had a bright acidity, but also a sweet, kind of mustard flavour, was surprisingly one of the highlights of the meal for me. The bread, including garlic bread that came with the chili, served with generous slabs of butter on the side, was absolutely wonderful and made my day. And, of course, the aged Cheddar cheese was the right amount of cheesey. One final comment I'll make is that, while the food tasted extraordinary, the price point for each dish simply cannot be beat for the quality and amount of food that you get. You could literally order anything on their menu and the Crow and Gate will not disappoint. Therefore, I am happy - in fact, I am quite pleased - to award the Crow and Gate Pub a 5-star. I wanted to love this adorable pub in a rural location. Staff was very nice, ambience was charming, & food was delicious. Only problem was that it took so long to get our food. We ordered a salad & an oyster stew. At first she said they might be out of the stew, which seemed really odd around noon. It's supposedly a specialty, and it's the beginning of lunch hour. So I flexed and chose steak & mushroom pie. Then the server returned & said they'd made more oyster stew, so I switched back. Another couple sat down at the end of our table shortly thereafter & ordered 2 oysters stews. They were served in about 15 minutes. Our server stopped by to let us know our food would be out shortly; it was the salad that was taking so long (roasting the root vegetables - you don't do that in advance?). Our food finally arrived more than an hour after we ordered. It truly was the best oyster stew I've ever had, really chock full of oysters. And the salad was fresh & delicious. Id recommended this place, but not if you're in a hurry. We weren't - we are on vacation & are happy to wait awhile for fresh, quality food in a comfortable setting. We found this on Yelp and based on the rating and the comments, we decided to try it. It was about 20 minutes away from downtown Nanaimo. It was a very quaint English pub located on a very nice property. It was dark out but the walkway was lit up with lights on trellises that leads to the door. Inside the restaurant had a very comfy English pub feel. We were seated immediately and our server was amazing. She was so friendly and so bubbly that she made us feel very welcome. We were unsure what to order and asked her for the most popular items in the menu which were the pan fried oysters , crab cakes and the steak and mushroom pot pie. She also provided us with the option to exchange 2 oysters for one crab cake. We took her suggestion and had the pan fried oysters with a crab cake with sides of roasted potatoes and potato salad, the steak and mushroom pot pie with sides of green salad and roasted potatoes and the smoked salmon chowder. The chowder was excellent and had lots of smoked salmon. It was very tasty and you could taste the smokiness of the salmon. I wished it was a bit hotter as I like my soups really hot. The pan fried oysters were excellent. They were meaty and had really good flavours. The crab cake was also really good and was a good size. The steak and mushroom pot pie was good and the topping was so buttery and flaky. The topping went well with the beef jus in the pot pie.
