Visiting family while on vacation, looking for a "good breakfast food spot". He when entering, we were greeted solemnly by the owner. There were 7+ one in our party so we waited a few minutes for the table to be re-configured to accommodate us. After that, the hostess or server, not the friendliest people... After that the food? Not the greatest food... Better than chain or fast food, but not a place I would return since it lacked the friendly, welcoming feel that I look forward to and expect from family owned restaurants. read more

Way out in the countryside 10 min drive from my house in north Fresno but totally worth it I was surprised it was this good I was not being optimistic wrong of me I know but glad my experience was awesome here sometimes I get my socks blown off now and then :) I will be back!! read more

I've been to this place twice now and I'm thankful to have stumbled upon it. We were going to our regular breakfast place in town and they were closed (very early AM). We were heading to Shaver Lake and decided we would try to find somewhere to eat along the way and the Red Caboose ended up being pretty much the only viable non-Denny's along Academy. Whenever I try a new diner for breakfast, I get what I consider to be a baseline standard: bacon and eggs. I feel like if you can't get that right it's not a good overall sign. In this case, they knocked it out of the park. The bacon was thick, flat, and perfectly cooked and they nailed my finicky over-medium-well eggs (love a flowing yoke, hate the slime, prefer to err on the side of cooked). And then there's the cabin (cottage?) potatoes. They didn't call them "country" potatoes, but whatever the hell their name they were excellent. Excellent, too, was the coffee. I can't remember if they stocked vanilla creamer like I like because I brought my own pre-creamed mug (that sounds dirtier than I intended), but the coffee itself was fresh, clearly an arabica, and a step up from the typical Farmer's Brothers you get in this region. For all I know it could've been FB coffee, just brewed more correctly, or perhaps a different blend, but it doesn't matter. Diners are not known for their coffee, but where you go makes a great deal of difference if you care to take note. These folks don't disappoint. Most people aren't picky about their diners. I'm no connoisseur like that jackass on TV, but I do tend to notice the details. Polite service from the staff is one thing, but observing that the staff is pleasant and clearly has no objection to being there tells me it's at least a decent place to work. That matters to me. Happy staff = happy food. Very good, attentive service. And if you look around the place, you'll see lots of little notices meant for the customers and/or the employees. "Today is a good day..." (or some similar variation) is one such note I saw behind the register. There's also a lovely, welcoming piece written under the big mural near what I believe is the southwest corner of the restaurant. People don't often take the time to demonstrate that they care. It's nice when it happens. So, based on a mere two, but nevertheless highly representative and sufficiently random data points, I can confidently say this is the best diner I've been to in California's Central Valley -- and I've been to dozens from Bakersfield to Modesto. If you get a chance to visit and if you're a prerequisite fan of diner food in the first place (I realize it's odd, but it remains near and dear to my heart), I think you'll be pleasantly surprised. read more

Evil loves cabooses (cabeese?). We are a caboose man. We love big cabooses. We love round cabooses. We love heart shapped cabooses. We love the Red Caboose! The Red Caboose Cafe does great breakfast. The portions are big and the food is delicious. If you go there, keep in mind that this is a family friendly place, so there will be lots of kids. You'll also have Fox News on all the tv's. Since I'm Evil, we like Fox News, so this was fine with us. The one thing that prevents the Red Caboose from getting that covetted 5th star is that the service can be a bit slow and they frequently have problems with "stuff". For example, the last time we were there, they ran out of water. Huh? How do you run out of water? Apparently, there was a plumbing issue...so no coffee with our breakfast, etc. Oh well, the food was still good! read more

I visited the Red Caboose Cafe after an amazing weekend spent at Shaver Lake. Before my friends and I parted ways we decided to grab a bite to eat at the cafe. We were greeted and seated right away. A nice little cafe that serves consistent and good food...not great, but good. The owners and staff are just wonderful people and a pleasure to dine with anytime. If I had one complaint, it would be that the menu is pretty much carved in stone. Prices are just a tad on the high end of the scale for a cafe/diner style of restaurant...but this is California where everything costs more. I just can't hold them accountable for that. They also occasionally have entertainment on Friday and Saturday nights, cater and host meetings from time to time. Unfortunately, because of zoning issues, the spacious covered patio area has been removed and is being replaced with a smaller open patio area. I would recommend the Red Caboose to anyone, anytime. read more

This morning by boyfriend, his parents, and I went to breakfast to The Red Caboose. We walked in with one family ahead of us. The waitress walked up and told us there were no more seats, and the wait would be about 20ish minutes. But there were seats at the bar, so we asked if we could sit there, and the other family did not, so we sat down immediately. While looking at the menu, I thought all the breakfasts came with sides, but that was not the case. I asked the bar waitress if I understood correctly, and she assured me that what I was ordering would come with a side. Then I ordered with a different waitress and she said that my breakfast did not come with a side. I think maybe they need to get on the same page with the menu.... But other than that, breakfast was great! I ordered a stack of pancakes and they were HUGE!! I could not finish them all. My boyfriend and his mom both ordered the breakfast burrito which was pretty good (granted I only had one bite). His dad ordered eggs, sausage, and hash browns which looked delicious. I was in the Red Caboose for the first time. While the folks who seemed like regulars recieved good service, I recieved poor service. Service was slow and sloppy. Coffee was splashed on the table as the server bairly slowed down to refill my cup. A literal greasy spoon was sent back for clean utensils. The food was not memorable. read more

Went here again with the parents and discovered their indoor/outdoor patio seating. They have propane heaters and clear vinyl walls they can roll up on nice days or leave down when it's cold. It is very spacious and the furniture was comfortable. The waitresses were all very attentive and Richard, the owner, gave my pops some great advice regarding tractors. Yes, you heard me right..tractors. We're going back to our roots, look at them boots! I had the J.D's omelet which is ground beef with homemade enchilada sauce and pepper jack cheese. It was delish and came with a side of fresh fruit for $.75 more. Hopefully The Red Caboose Cafe becomes a Sunday tradition when I visit my parents. Cheers read more

Not bad, not outstanding. The service was friendly and we were seated quickly, the person bringing drinks was very fast, but our waitress took quite a while to get around to taking our order and her section was fairly empty so I'm not sure what that was about. She was very personable and friendly when she did finally get to us. Food arrived in fairly short order. I'd actually say the food was only two and a half stars, but Yelp doesn't let you go halfway, so I'm rounding up because of the smiling service. We ordered french toast, eggs and sausage (the french toast sandwich) and it was fine. Nothing to write home about. Eggs were rubbery and my french toast was tough. Decent sausage. Coffee was weak. I will say that the food on other tables looked good - in particular the omelettes and hash browns looked like they were very well done - so I will give this place another try next time I am in town and hopefully get to add another star. read more

There are much better breakfast joints in the town. I support local businesses especially in this location but I've had a few meals there and have yet to be wowed. Biscuits and gravy were cold and needed more seasoning. However if you're in that side of town then it's not a bad choice. Service was quick but the menu was a tab overpriced. read more

Honestly I reallllllly wanted to give this place 5 stars but I just can't :( it's right down the street from my parents house and everyone loves it but I went here for the first time and I wasn't impressed. I met my mom, sister, and niece here and my friend and her boyfriend were going to meet us. There was ONE waitress working. Took forever to get seated and waited about 10 or more minutes to even order drinks. I think we waited about 30-45 minutes before we even got the chance to even order our food! My mom and I ordered the meatloaf special only to find out later that they were out of mashed potatoes and we both replaced it with potato salad. My sister had ordered spaghetti and later found out they were out of that too. Everything took forever. My food was okay. I will try it again because I'm really hoping it was just an off night. I think I'll try the breakfast. The good parts were that the lemonade was amazing! The waitress was nice and I think it was her attitude that kept us from getting frustrated. If I have a good experience the second time I will update my review but until then I have to go with I just want impressed :( read more

So I went to this place this last weekend. When we came in we were greeted by the owner a "teddy bear looking kind of gentleman". We were seated quickly and drink order taken right away. As I looked around, this place was positively a place that someone with ADD, (ME) will always have something to look at. See the pictures. The server was so sweet and just full of sparkle, unfortunately, they do not put names on their tickets so I will have to call her server 4. She was very prompt and just made you smile when she came around. We both ordered omelettes. There was no table discussion. Everything was a perfect combination of meat, veggies and eggs. With levels of cheese interwoven. Delicious! It is a little out of the way but great for breakfast. The do serve lunch and breakfast everyday and dinner on the weekends. There's usually a good amount of folks when we go. But that only means the grub is good. We have been here a handful of times now.
