We were trying to grab a bite after 7pm on a July Sunday evening but there were not many choices in town. We walked into the tavern and were worried about its price and service. I got to say we were pleasantly surprised - this is probably the best value meal that we had in town. We had the chowder and it was a generous portion with lumps of fish. My husband had the fish and chip and it was perfectly done with a good quality piece of fish. I had the grilled Cesar which was good. My daughter had her pasta with butter and Parmesan and she gave a thumbs up and a yummy. The food did not come out fast and my daughter did get antsy. read more

The Rangeley Tavern is a welcome respite from through hiking the Appalachian Trail! The husband and I stumbled in here after being on trail for a couple hundred miles with no time off. Although we did have a shower before dinner, I'm sure we were a mess! The staff were so very welcoming and the menu had a wide assortment of fabulous offerings. The inside of the establishment was reminiscent of old school lodge meets cigar lounge. Very cool and relaxed, slightly upscale without being pompous vibe. We ordered green apple martini (perfectly mixed) and a beer. For starters we had the charcuterie board with warm bread. The board had a fabulous assortment of meats and cheese.. the bread was amazing For dinner I opted for the steak frites, which was a perfectly prepared (Med rare) ribeye and had cut fries. My husband had the blue cheese bacon burger that's was off the rails perfection! I wish i had room for dessert, but wow, the portions were huge! The food here is fabulous. Pricing is reasonable. Come as you are environment, but showers highly encouraged! The staff is warm, welcoming and fun to chat with! Looking for a place to eat on a Monday evening is hard with limited options available. Chose The Tavern at the Rangeley Inn for something different. Historic Inn and Tavern has a beautiful and relaxing atmosphere where one can relax and slow down. Waitress this evening was also the bartender. A good crowd which made us a little nervous about how long it would take to eat. Erykah was timely greeting our table as well as bringing our drinks and taking our order. We ordered after a table of 8, so we will see how timely it will be. We ordered three seafood items offered in the menu, Shrimp with Linguini, Salmon, and Mussels. We enjoyed a nice conversation with the table next to us and before we knew it their food was up, and not too long after, ours arrived. Everything was delicious. Mussels we steamed with a nice wine and garlic sauce and served with delicious bread. Salmon was also very good with fresh Broccoli and potatoes. We came in on a Monday night (slim pickings in Rangely on a Monday night...) for a quick dinner. We were starving so the bar was low. The drinks were good and the space was cute, but the menu was very small and seemed to be more catered towards an older crowd (they were playing the hits as far as menu variety goes). My fish and chips was over-fried and my husband's medium burger was dry and overcooked as well. The manager came over to check and you could tell they were overwhelmed. I'm sure with staffing issues and supply chain they were working hard. But the food was just meh. I'd go back for a cocktail and snack though! My wife and I stayed at the Inn while enjoying an Epic ski weekend at Saddleback. As a throwback, we decided to check out the Pub on property apres skiing. We had a fantastic time for all and we all got to sit in front of the fireplace and Big puffy chairs. The old lodge vibe was growing on us. The environment is a little dark and somewhat dinghy but in there was also a certain level of old charm as this building is about 100 years old and it hadn't changed much in 25 years. It was just what the doctor ordered first we weren't sure whether we wanted to stay for dinner after having drinks, but we're glad that we did. Our cocktails & beer were quickly served, and our server actually brought us water so we could rehydrate after all that skiing! The food was so much better than we had expected. First of all the burger was a Pineland, Farms burger - absolutely spot on with crunchy yummy french fries as good as McDonalds. My wife is gluten-free and we were a bit taken back by only having a few options for her. Lisa, our server had strongly suggested the Tuna after some coaxing, Virginia eventually ventured for the tuna, which was a very generous portion. It was accompanied by sticky rice, soy sauce, and a nice wasabi sauce that was just spicy enough. But the best was the beef short rib special with a sauce so rich and flavorful. We all snuck some of it from Kay. However, we all thought it was a bit steep on the price at $42. My dinner the porch schnitzel was perfectly crisp with creamy mashed potatoes and broccoli. There was also a little side of mushroom sauce. Our server was very funny, personable and she was quite attentive to all of our needs. We had a 40th birthday guest with us, and she actually rang a bell at the bar and let everyone know ! She even took our photo our group, photo on wife's phone. This was the highlight of our evening. We thought it was unusual that they were only two desserts after having so many different entrées to choose from. We all decided to delve into one Caramel Sundae with a birthday candle! Other than taking quite a long time to get there it was just enough to settle us all for bed. Staff seemed poorly trained. We sat down with one waitress, was never waited on with her again, we had to flag down several other waiters to ask for water, questions, and for the check. I have celiac and ordered a "gluten free" meal, but the food that came out was pork fried in breadcrumbs. When I asked if they made it gluten free, it was not. A new meal came out in less than five minutes which made me question the quality of the food considering we were waiting almost 40 min for food to come out in the first place. My suspicions were right, the food was awful. My boyfriend's burger was over cooked and dry, my meat was also dry and the veggies were soggy and cold. We couldn't eat more than a few bites. And of course, the kicker was the bill. Almost $70 for waters and fast food quality food. My only positive is the atmosphere, it's a beautiful building. If you're coming in for just a drink I'm sure it's worth it, but I wouldn't recommend eating here. read more

This place is so cozy and so inviting, then you deal with the bar manager. Been here so many times it's always great if the bar manager is busy or not there. If you see a chick standing at the bar only talking then walk away. She seems to want people she doesn't know to leave the establishment. Food is always decent wait staff is cool and helpful. Drinks are not even close to worth it though as a double of anything is 20$ and they only use 3/4 of a shot glass for a measure. It's definitely not an affordable option. read more

The Rangeley Inn and Tavern offered a completely relaxed vacation in a small, quiet community around Rangeley Lake. We were very happy to find such a nice ding experience here. Chef Bill and his staff gave awesome presentations I and service, not to mention the incredible food. My husband I spent 5 nights at the Inn and ate 4 dinners at the Tavern. Bill is the very personable, experienced and creative new chef. He made us really want to eat every meal here and try everything on the menu. My personal favorites were the baked haddock, the award winning fish chowder, the amazing beet salad , and of course the naive blueberry cobbler. Thank you to the amazing wait staff and food service manager as well. We really enjoyed visiting with Susan at the front desk and the owner / horticulturalist , Travis. There are constantly improvements underway here. Each room has new AC splits and they are in the process of adding an elevator to this historic Inn. We want to revisit this inn in the fall. Although the weather was very soggy for 3 days ... it was glorious when the sun finally came out.... And I even saw my first Maine moose! read more

I've been here a handful of times, and due to the constant change in chefs, I've had very uneven experiences. However, that said the newest chef seems to be doing great things. The menu is definitely interesting and you have a pretty decent selection on what to choose from. We ordered an appetizer consisting of the blueberry hoisin wings and I recommend them to anyone. They were not too sweet (nor did they have an overpowering blueberry taste). As I've mentioned before, my family likes to sample each others dishes. The burgers my boyfriend and his brother had were pretty good, and the fish my boyfriend's mother had very light and tasty. I feel as though I was the "loser" by ordering the chicken mole. The chicken itself was cooked perfectly, but the mole sauce was just not my cup of tea. All in all, I think this place is on the rise. I would definitely go back, but order a different entree. read more

The Tavern is exactly what Rangeley needed. Upscale, yet unpretentious, the food is great and the service attentive. Everyone here works so hard to make one feel welcomed. It feels like an extension of home. We dropped in on a busy Friday night, in search of lighter fare. The menu is broad and we have enjoyed full meals here before. Without hesitation, we both stated that we each wanted the Caesar salad and the Coconut Lobster bisque. Delicious!! The bisque had plenty of meat and had an Asian flair. The house biscuits were made from scratch and were delicate and yummy. Best meal, best food, best service in town. We'll be back. read more

On a positive note, the waitress was pleasant and did a nice job, the place is nicely decorated and looked good. Unfortunately the other side of the coin is not so good. We waited nearly an hour for two burgers they weren't cooked as we had asked, the roll were very stale, and the prices were steep. I know labor is a big problem, but I won't pay $50 for two burgers that we couldn't eat, won't go back. read more

We ate there last week and had a nice meal. 1) Big party - service was great; all the food came out at appropriate times. 2) Good value for prices - fish specials were low 20's and were excellent. Party of 8 with drinks (and granted two kids meals) came in at $210. 3) Tasty food - the haddock dish was exceptional; salmon was great; wings as apps were great. 4) Attention to detail - The chef came out, several people checked on us, very nice meal. We felt welcomed by the hospitable staff at the Rangeley Tavern. The decor is warm and cozy and we could feel the sense of history from the well documented photos from the past . Jim Fargo, the head chef, did an exceptional job of creating a menu that had something for everyone. With a family of three teenagers it can be a struggle to find something to accommodate all tastes, however, the Tavern's burgers suited the kids well and the refreshing bacon wrapped citrus halibut and Cubano sandwich left us all feeling very satisfied. read more

This would be a great spot if the food didn't suck. Both the bar area and the dining room are in great shape and the service from the hostess and bartender was excellent the night I was there. It's just too bad they have to serve lackluster food. Bread was a biscuit served with rock hard butter in a chilled glass out of the fridge. Impossible to spread. Butter is not going to spoil if you leave it at room temp. Anti pasta salad had been made well in advance and stored in the fridge. Wouldn't be a big deal except this one contained lots of large homemade croutons which soaked up all the moisture from the salad and turned them to concrete. Might as well put some wood chips in there. Does anyone even sample the food they serve? And finally the gnocchi carbonara with house cured bacon I was served was gnocchi in a heavy white sauce with peas and no sign of any house cured bacon. This is not a carbonara, or even close enough to be a variation of one. "Executive chef" Jim Fargo clearly has no clue what he is doing. They need to get rid of this hack and get someone in there who knows something about putting out decent food. One star for the bartender even though they are serving wine that was opened the night before. read more

This place deserves an A plus. For the effort put in to restore the historic building located in downtown Rangeley. I have not tried the food yet how ever been to the bar on several occasions. Always very friendly and eclectic mix of individuals and a well stocked bar. Bartender was very friendly the place feels very authentic. Strange experience. Dark atmosphere, not what you expected from the outside. Our waitress was not knowledgeable, fumbled to explain the beers on tap, and took 10 minutes to run out check. Even though dining room was empty, hostess sat us right next to the only other table. Food was not "tavern" food. Really expensive and not worth it. $15 appetizer that was supposed to include artisanal cheeses and meats but consisted of goat cheese and prosciutto. Would not go back. They need to figure out their image and atmosphere. Either be fancy and make it worth the price or be a tavern. They are in limbo somewhere in between. read more
