Had a very unsettling experience at this restaurant on Sunday night. When we arrived we were excited as this has been a staple in Kingfield for many years. Upon our arrival our waitress, Colleen, seemed a little disorganized and took awhile to grab us menus. We looked past that though for the time being, my friend ended up ordering a bud light. When he got his beer he tried it and it was an IPA. Had a darker tint to it as well, when the waitress came back my friend nicely asked what kind of beer it was and she said bud light, but became argumentative about it immediately which was not our intention at all. We simply just wanted to know what it was because it was an IPA. After wanting to argue and tell us it wasn't an IPA, she leaves and comes back and tells us that it was in fact an IPA and gave us a bud light. We thought it was all over after this, it wasn't. She then continues to act rude throughout the whole interaction and was not attentive to our table whatsoever. Then it came time for the bill. She quickly comes over and says yeah I'll get you boxes and then runs off, we wanted to let her know we wanted 3 separate checks. When she comes back we let her know this and she says well I'll try to remember what you guys had, when we offered to write it down for her since we didn't know it was such a hassle. We then decide to pay for it on one check, when my friend nicely goes down to do this she says "Yeah, the way you should have done it in the first place." We finally leave... it should be over at this point right? Well it wasn't, when we are walking back to our car from the gas station, she screams over another group of people at us "THANKS FOR THE 10 PERCENT TIP!" After the extremely rude and uncomfortable service, she's lucky she even got a tip! I don't know if she was having a bad day, but this is not someone I would want in the hospitality business. This was a spontaneous stop on a motorcycle leaf peeping trip. It will certainly be frequented! We were lucky to be able to walk in at 1pm on a beautiful Saturday, I think there was a line the rest of the time we were there. It's wonderfully cozy inside- to the point I felt like I was in a pub and thought I could get some mulled wine (it's not a thing there!). We had very good, juicy hamburgers. I loved the black and blue and my partner loved his habanero burger. We both got chips- they are homemade and so good. We will definitely be back, it seems like decent street parking too. read more

Cutting to the chase, the 1-Star is because Longfellow's is no longer friendly or accessible for customers with serious food allergies. We used to stop at Longfellow's every Friday night all winter long. We had a very nice waitress who remembered us each week, and she was always happy to check on ingredients for for our daughter who has a severe nut allergy. She would also confidently assure us that the chef would take precautions. We don't pass by Longfellow's as often as we used to. This weekend was the first time this season, and our kids really wanted to stop. This time was a completely different experience: We called ahead because we intended to order some food to take with us on the road. When we alerted the person taking our order that our daughter has allergies to peanuts, tree nuts and eggs, the woman on the line told us she was not sure whether they could accommodate us. She said that she would " hate for something to happen to our child." We had never had difficulty ordering there in the past, so we pressed her to look into whether the items my daughter was ordering contained any of the allergens and could be prepared separately from other menu items that may contain these allergens. (Standard practice at most establishments) She was audibly impatient with me but put me on hold to check. While I waited, I got disconnected. I attempted to call back several times, but was apparently not getting service. Since we knew we would pass by, I decided to go ahead inside on our way by and wait for the food to be prepared. When I entered and told her that I had just spoken to someone, she immediately snapped that she had been trying to help when I "had hung up on her". I assured her that I had not but that I must have been getting poor service. I apologized. I explained my daughter's allergies again and simply asked that the ingredients be checked and that I be assured that the ordered items could be kept separate from anything else with nuts. She nodded and looked busy doing a million things. I could see she was stressed. We waited for several minutes patiently until my daughter suggested to me that the woman might have entered the order hoping we'd just accept her nodding as assurance. I asked the woman whether she had in fact gone ahead and entered the order and she said she had. At which point, I apologized for the trouble, but explained that my daughter's allergies are severe and that we would definitely need to know the ingredients and have assurance that they could be prepared safely for her before placing the order. Next, the woman audibly scoffed. She walked to the kitchen without eye contact, returned with the package used in one menu item in question which I explained I'd be happy to peruse because she seemed to be getting annoyed by our special needs. The ingredients were fine. When we asked about the other menu item we were hoping to order, again she scoffed. Another nearby server went back to the kitchen and returned a moment later and said "We just don't know." At this point, I turned to them both and said, "I sorry to have troubled you, but I think we're going to pass." Then we left. We have visited many restaurants with servers and staff having varying degrees of education surrounding allergies. But this was truly the first time we faced what appeared to be open hostility. I did notice they seemed busy. I imagine special requests can seem frivolous to someone who is unfamiliar with allergies and who is busy serving more regular customers. I left with one thought, "It is clear that this restaurant no longer welcomes people with allergies." Message received. - read more

When my dad and I first walked in we noticed how dark it was and in my own opinion I LOVE when the restaurant is dark. It feels more homey for me. Its very casual and quiet here. This place is literally THE most underrated restaurant in the Kingfield/Sugarloaf area. Great, homemade food at a great price. Whether it's the bbq burger after a long hike along Bigelow, a beer and a salad on the deck post marathon volunteering, or an affordable night out with friends, this place is the right fit for all occasions. I recently had their carbonara and requested Scallops be added to it: they gave me 6 good sized scallops and only charged me $5 extra for it. UNheard of! And they were good scallops too. Also a great spot to come to if you want to avoid the crowds and upcosts of Carrabassett Valley dining. Also their deck is my new favorite spot on a sunny day- it looks out over the river and is located next to the dam so you have the sounds of the river (but not so loud that it's deafening) as well as lots of sun. Staff was fast, friendly and attentive. Calamari appetizer had a delicious side sauce. I had Scallops Lorriane (sea scallops) that was to die for... my hubby had surf & turf, which was Honey Scallops & BBQ Beef tips which was also very good. AND let me tell you about the margarita's! I actually ate here twice during my stay here. Both times my bread on my burger and on my hoagie were very soggy. The burger was so soggy that I could not even pick it up I had to fork and knife it and even with that there was nothing spectacular about the burger itself. Went last night with a party of 8. We were seated at 5:30. Drinks took 25 minutes to come. We did not order until 6:30 and we hadn't seen the waitress since drinks had come at 6. Bread was brought to the table with the appetizer at 7. Dinner didn't come until 7:30. We didn't leave until 8:30 because we were waiting for our check. The food itself was fantastic but the service was atrocious. The Surf and Turf was great but when entrees are served with a cold starch it leaves a lot to be desired. We visited Maine (from Ohio) for the very first time over the weekend and stayed at Sugarloaf. We were looking for more of a local restaurant, rather than just eating dinner at the ski lodge. Thanks to Yelp, we discovered Longfellows, which was a short 20 minutes or so away. OMG. Best decision we could've made. The place is small and a little slow to serve, BUT it may have been one of the best meals we've ever had. To start, we had the stuffed mushrooms, which were amazing. Buttery, cheesy and delicious. Six mushrooms weren't enough! We moved onto a side salad (for me) and clam chowder (for my husband). Pretty standard here, but my husband said the clam chowder was very good - more brothy than creamy, but very good. Dinner for me was Chicken Longfellow with a baked potato. My husband had the Beef Tips and the Nova Scotia scallops. The chicken was incredible. My husband hoped I wouldn't eat it all -- but I basically cleaned my plate. The baked potato was even awesome -- crunchy and actually BAKED. My husbands beef tips were cooked perfectly and his scallops - . I don't even really like scallops, but OMG, I ate two of my husbands. They were amazing. So happy we went off the path a little instead of staying at the lodge. We probably spent less at Longfellows than we would've at the lodge for a NICE and delicious dinner! After a long day of hiking, my wife and I had worked up a good appetite and we're looking for someplace in the Sugarloaf Mountain region to get a good meal that didn't involve lots of pasta or fried food. After reading a few online reviews we decided to try Longfellow's in Kingfield. We arrived just before the dinner rush and It was the perfect spring day in Maine so we decided to grab a spot on the patio overlooking the river. The menu was filled with lots of grilled items including steaks, chicken, seafood, pork and also lots of vegetarian, vegan and gluten free items. The specials menu also looked great with many delicious sounding items. We decided to start with the special appetizer of the night. Fresh picked Maine fiddlehead cheese dip with Indian Nann bread. The dip was similar to Spinach Dip but with fiddleheads taking the place of the Spinach. It was ultra gooey, cheesy and rich. It was bursting with cheddar flavor and had a nice little hot kick at the end. It was not long before it all disappeared. Simone ordered a basic Cheeseburger with Fries but ordered a gluten free bun to go with it. It was a Good Burger cooked as requested and the bun was excellent. I would not have known it was gluten free if i hadn't been told. The fries ( although they were the frozen variety) were perfectly crispy and delicious and tasted even better dipped in the house made Ranch dressing. For my own entree I had the evenings special Bootleggers Grilled Pork Ribeye. This was one of the best pork dishes EVER. It was perfectly grilled, so tender, so juicy and so flavorful. To make this even better it was literally drowning in a mountain of crispy bacon, grilled mushrooms and onions, and house made Jack Daniels Bourbon BBQ Sauce. I cant even describe how happy this made me. Foodgasm is probably the best way to say it. On the side I tried the vegetable of the day Queensland Blue Squash ( ironically it was orange). I actually hate squash....it looks like baby food and tastes way to sweet but remarkably I had one bite of this and wanted more. It was only slightly sweet but had some wonderful seasoning that I could not identify but magically just worked. I finished it all. Lastly was dessert (also home made). Our choice was called the Boston Bomb. It was half eclair, half yellow cake and all chocolate covered. It was just the right amount of goodness. Light, custardy, chocolaty, cool and sweet. A great ending. I'm very glad I found this place. It is comfort food at its finest and i can't wait to go back when i'm in town. read more

We love Longfellow's. They catered our wedding 3 years ago, buffet style, at the sugarloaf outdoor center and everyone raved about their food. We got an amazing deal on the Longfellow's Chicken, Steak, and Stuffed Haddock. And it was delicious! Probably the most amazing food I've ever had. We try to go back every year for our anniversary, and get the same meals to relive our good times. One of the few places I won't get my usual burger - too many other good things to eat!
