This is my favorite location of The Range Cafe. They all look the same but I feel the staff brings the character out best here. For me, The Range Cafe is a breakfast standout. The meals are large and filling. Plus, there's the baked goods. Cinnamon rolls and pecan rolls the size of your head. That's an experience for the whole table. I know there are other meals than breakfast, but I can't htink of a better place to start your day. Just home from traveling for a week and always require a solid New Mexican meal with green or red Chile Always.... The Range was tonight's choice and it did not disappoint But must mention the vegetable medley needs a change, the obligatory green beans are not good. Would love to see some Calabacitas, maybe some fresh corn. I had the NM Reuben that had the green chile and it was really good. The grilled ham and cheese was reportedly good too and a simple comfort food. Service by Jason was great. My time in Bernalillo is limited, thus the historic (#1) Range Café was the only option I had considered while passing through town. The experience was so nice that I had 3 major realizations upon finishing my meal: 1) I'm extremely full. 2) I'm now a green chili convert 3) I'm definitely coming back here again. As I understand it, this is one of its oldest locations, in which this place opened shortly after the fire of its original flagship location experienced a fire in the early 90s. They've taken the term "ordinary food done extremely well" to new heights. It might not look like much from the outside, but the place is massive. There are chairs for days and no shortage of seating options for large to small groups. I'm told that there are long waits on the weekends, which goes to show how popular this place really is. There is even a large number of staffers onsite to accommodate. I started with a cup of their famous green chile stew. It was outstanding. There were hints of spice with every slurp, but a satisfying finish to the broth and a wonderfully simmered, fall-apart chicken meat inside. The best part of my chimichanga was the carne adovada meat, but the cabbage and accompanying sauce weren't my favorite. The combo meal of my green chile enchiladas with green chile rice was fabulous. It's a messy meal, but an intensely satisfying one and this is coming from someone who doesn't consider themselves a spice lord. The prices were probably expensive for the area ($45) but the service and quality of food made it far more tolerable. Original location alert. I love the vibe of this place, if you don't already know the range cafe is a staple of the Southwest. They have an extensive menu, however I encourage While you're at, there's plenty of art to look at it. I love this place. Some of the pieces are for sale, so be sure not have too many mimosas. I absolutely adore the banana pudding! It's the best I've ever had period. If you spill a shot of espresso on top you'll take me to heaven. Cool spot, brunch lunch dinner whatever. It's such a shame because this is such a cool location. I decided to give them another chance after a while since I had a bad experience the last couple of times. Went back this time and the service was super slow. When I got my sandwich the bread was so old and dry. I couldn't even eat it. I requested a different kind of bread and they brought the sandwich back with another bread that was all dried out. It was so disappointing. I couldn't even eat it. Yes, they took it off the check but twice in a row two different breads it taste like it's been out for 24 hours at least on the counter? The most dry sandwich I ever had in my life. Both different kind of breads that they brought were like dry sponges. The onion rings were saturated with grease everyone at the table had a meal but me. This was the third bad experience. I've had there. I have officially learned my lesson. read more

Up front there is a counter to eat some of their many desserts. Off to the left of the main entrance they have their gift shop. I did not enter the shop. Waited 20 minutes on a Saturday night at 5:30 pm for a table. Most certainly worth it. Service was efficient. I ordered a draft beer and made it just in time for the five dollar happy hour. Also ordered chips and salsa which during happy hour are 50% off. The chips were probably some of the best I have had. They were crunchy and tasted almost buttery, so smooth. There were white corn chips mixed with blue chips. The salsa was well consisted and had great substance. My husband ordered the chicken chimichanga and I ordered the chicken burrito. We could not decide between red and green sauce so we asked the waiter to give us one of each on the side. Glad I did this because both were delicious. There was a copious amount of chicken. It was shredded and wrapped in the tortilla with pinto beans on the side. I truly cannot believe the amount of chicken in my burrito. And it was so tender. We were visiting from out of town and I wish I had gone back to this restaurant for the next night dinner as it was so delicious. We've eaten here many times in the past and never been disappointed, but there's a first for everything. Tonight we picked up a couple of Lobo club sandwiches with sweet potato fries. About a third of our fries were burnt. There was no bacon on the clubs, and just a couple very small slices of avocado, and tomato. OK, I thought, you're allowed to have a bad night. There was a very large catering order going out right before ours, so I know you were busy. Then things got really bad. I bit into one of the very hard burnt fries and broke my tooth. I know you guys can do better. I will say at least the turkey, bread, and what veggies there were on the sandwich were fresh. A lot of history and tradition are part of this restaurant. That is why we stopped for lunch on our way to a concert at Rio Rancho event Center. We arrived at the end of the lunch rush so that may have something to do with a low rating. We ordered the signature hamburger and blue corn enchiladas. The blue corn enchiladas were good but the signature hamburger was average with cold sweet potato fries. The Range has some of the best food in town. It never disappoints and the food tastes homemade. Their desserts are to die for.

Breakfast was good. The plate we chose, Burgos rancheros, was a bit of a deconstructed dish with the chorizo on the side and the eggs smothered in red and green chili. I was expecting the chili to be a little more flavorful but nonetheless it was good. The coffee did have a different flavor I'm wondering if it's piñon coffee. The servers were attentive and took great care of their tables. the highlight of the visit was the cake... layers of chocolate cake, icing, cheesecake, flan, more icing, tres leches.. oh my ... it was so so good. They have fresh pastries, fresh cakes, you order desert first and get 10%off ;) And next door you get a nice gift shop with many local items and souvenirs to remind you of your time in NM. read more

Locals love this place. I am not so enthusiastic. * * * Yelp features rave reviews for the bar, for smash burgers and for corn pancakes. I had a vegetarian omelette, green chile hash browns and coffee. All three were boredom on a stick. The omelette was the kind of vegetarian food that they used to give to "poor suffering vegetarians whose pious ways keep them from enjoying meat". The omelette and the hash browns desperately needed both salt and kick. Since when should you have to put hot sauce on green chile hash browns? The coffee out of the pot was not stale but was not excellent either. I had things I had to get done that morning - so it was not the time to try out the bar people love. * * * My assessment is that I just ordered off the bottom 20% of the menu. Well the food was delicious as always. Too bad our waitress was in a mood and took it out on us. Completely ruined the experience. I don't get many days off where I can drive down to Bernalillo to go to my childhood eatery but today was the day. Ordered something new, and as always, the kitchen delivered deliciousness. At first I couldn't hear the waitress even with her standing right next to my chair. Then we ordered nachos with the onion stuff on the side, and she said that the chicken has onions too, I tried to say that'd be fine since it'd be cooked (again, eaten here for over 30 years). She seemed annoyed with me. Basically from there, getting refills on drinks was an effort on our part. She "forgot" the dessert discount for ordering dessert first for my other dinner. We asked for 4 containers since we had a lot of leftovers, she brought 2. Asked for more for the rest of the food, she only brought 1. It just seemed like retaliation the entire meal. I worked a job near this restaurant and ate there one or two times a day for over a week. The food was consistently amazing. Theres a wide variety of food to choose from so I never got tired of eating there. The staff were mostly exceptional. There is a gift shop and the walls are covered in art. We flew in from another state to see Chasing Time for the last time as the cafe is getting rid of live music. I made a reservation 2 weeks early and said we wanted a table in front of the band. 10 minutes late the put us at a huge table by the bathroom no where near the band! Forgot to give us menus, no one came to serve us until I walked back to the front desk and asked for menus Slow service and I was so upset I did not order anything. Food was okay for my friends. Lousy service and they just smiled and ignored us. When my friends were halfway through their meal someone not working there came to the table and asked if 5 people could join us as 2 of us were in the bathroom even though the food was on the table. Yuck! Gringo grade Mexican food was lousy and the house margarita was SO Sour it was undrinkable. This place was filled with gringos - always a bad sign. When I payed I told them we did not receive the 10% for ordering the dessert first. Manager said they do not stack discounts, I told him they need to include that in their advertisement. Huevos rancheros were spot on, my hubby had some shredded chicken tacos, and the waitress helped my picky teenage son get exactly what he wanted - grilled chicken and some tortillas. This has gotta be the most popular restaurant in town and there's a lot going for it here. They have a lounge in back with a bar and music stage. They have lots of artwork on the walls that you can purchase and a gift shop directly across from the checkout. One thing that really drives people through the door here is their very reasonable prices. I had their fantastic double meat smash burger with bacon, mushrooms and swiss. It was worth every penny! My 3 guests absolutely loved their entrées. One thing that's really unique is that they serve your entrée on Fiesta ware. They definitely have the formula down here, great prices, great food, and great service. When it's time to check out, they'll bring you a handhold device with the suggested tip amount. My favorite so far is either the taco salad or the range chicken. They had wonderful flavors and a variety of toppings to add a bit of uniqueness to each one.
