A small Mexican general store, inexpensive and good food options. Like getting lunch from the Mexican auntie you may not have. I'm normally not big on carne asada burritos, but theirs was quite good, not the typical overcooked dry ground beef. The shrimp in chipotle sauce had excellent flavor, but was a little scant on the shrimp part. The seating area is quite small, but all orders are served with take-out materials, so if you're looking for a place to drop by and grab a bite, don't overlook Ruby's. read more

Wow... Wow! What a fantastic find! I just had one of the best burritos that I've eaten in quite some time... For five dollars. Let me repeat... Five bucks! There are several small Mexican eateries in Bernalillo and today decided to try Ruby's because they had the highest Yelp rating in the local area. I said small but this qualifies as tiny. Three small tables on one side of the store with a menu on the wall. The selection maybe somewhat limited compared to the big chain restaurants in the area but this seems more down home. There was a continuous string of customers coming in for take out while we were there. I ordered the chile Colorado burrito and my wife had the Picadillo tacos. The burrito consisted of pork that had been cooked in a red chili sauce. The size was plenty. By weight I'd say it was about 2/3 the size of a Chipotle burrito. However, the flavor was superior. My wife was pleased with the taste of her tacos but the corn tortillas quickly fell apart so she discarded them and mixed in the tortilla chips that came with my burrito. I was happy with the burrito but wished they had a salas or condiment bar. read more

A neighborhood gem! Authentic handmade tortillas, tacos, burritos, tortas, tamales and more. First impression was that the owners have a lot of pride in the place. It's small, but freshly painted with a clean swept front stoop. Inside is equally as clean (even the bathroom). There is a small front area where you can buy interesting Mexican drinks and snacks including fresh, homemade chicharrones--those have to be good. Nearly every other customer stopped and bagged some up. My husband and I ordered the chile Colorado burrito and 2 shredded beef tacos to share. The tacos are small--think 2 or 3 bites--but very tasty. The fresh corn tortillas were the best part. Meat was tasty and tender and the green sauce was delicious and spicy. There was a side of shredded lettuce, shredded cheese and sliced tomato, but no onion, pico, cilantro or other things I have come to expect in a taco. The burrito was also good. Again the tortilla (an oversized fluffy flour one this time) was the best part. This is a large burrito but not like the monster stuffed burritos that are common nowadays. The burrito had shredded chicken in a neon red colored sauce with melted shredded cheese. My husband (who is from El Paso) and I were confused. To us, chile Colorado is beef chunks stewed in a dark red chile sauce. Definitely not the same, but the chicken was still tasty (though a bit overcooked). The most amazing part? All of this food was $9.50 total. Mind blown as far as value. While I would give the food alone 3.5 or 4 stars, the friendly staff, cleanliness and price put this place over the top! If I lived in town I would be a lunch regular. read more

Tried their asada and pollo taco plates (came with rice), a pollo burrito (with housemade chips), a pollo torta (with chips), and their chile relleno plate (came with beans and rice). Everything (but the torta?) came with 2 house-made corn tortillas. Their meat is very well flavored - everything was delicious. The rice was a little wet, but I guess that's better than dry. The total, with a 1.5L Jarritos soda and a bottle of flavored coconut milk, and five little candies, was just over $50. I had to ask for the rellenos to be topped with cheese and green chile - otherwise they prepare them for you dry. Same with the burrito. read more

We got 30 carne asada tacos to go. Came with tons of fixings and were delicious! The women working were very friendly and took care of us.

I've only tried the burritos here because I can't get over how amazing they are to try something else. I typically get the barbacoa burrito - which is delicious and has just the right amount of spice. I love that each order comes with fresh made chips and a Chile sauce that is exquisite. At some point I may branch out - I'm told the other food is just as incredible. For now I'm content to enjoy my barbacoa burrito - at least once a week. read more

Best masa I've ever bought in 25 years. Amazing masa. Tasty, not lard-y, light, full of flavor. As a lifelong tamale maker, I highly recommend. Their flour tortillas are incredible. Light, soft, tender. Didn't see any corn, but it was Christmas. We didn't try their tamales because we were making our own. This is a classic little Mexican taco , burrito, torta lunch shop, right down to 10cent Chicklets for sale on the counter. Muy autentico. Don't come in here expecting Taco Bell, your server might not speak perfect English. Do come in here for delicious, authentic food and a small selection of supplies. read more

I've been buying delicious corn tortillas from Ruby's for a couple of years. They are absolutely tender, freshly made daily and very low priced. When I discovered they also made tamales, I was thrilled, as I hadn't had a good tamale in years. The green chile/chicken tamales are my personal favorites, but the red chile/pork ones are also great. The masa is like pudding, it's so light and tender & the meat and cheese are a perfect blend. The price couldn't be better at $15/dozen. It's best to call ahead and order them to be sure to get some as they go fast once put in the case. Ruby's is just the best for hot fresh corn tortillas...and their other take out items that I've tried have been excellent. I got a little panicked recently because the shop was closed down! But good news, they have reopened just a few minutes away at 118 W, Calle Montoya in Bernalillo. Don't even bother getting super market tortillas. Stop by Ruby's and get them warm and fresh. read more

My husband and I buy corn tortillas, flour tortillas, salsa, and sometimes beans or flautas here almost weekly. If you are looking for authentic home style tortillas without all of the processed junk in the store bought tortillas, this is the place to go! I have never been disappointed! I do advise that you keep the tortillas in the fridge, not out-especially in the summer, because they are fresh and don't have preservatives I'm assuming, so in the summer they can get moldy quickly. I buy a lot of organic foods, so I'm used to this. My husband and I both had a good laugh when we read the post about expecting to find blue, yellow and red tortillas here... Yes, they sell yellow corn tortillas at Walmart and blue corn tortillas in restaurants to make them seem cool. As a born and bred New Mexican, married to a Mexican-neither of us have ever expected to find tortillas in these colors...haha! Where to begin.... The sign on the ridiculously small building says "Tortilleria" & shows pictures of tortillas.....when I step into the VERY itsy bitsy place, I see no tortillas...anywhere. I see all signs in Spanish, bags of chips, coke, lollipops, pop-tarts....no tortillas. I also see familiar Spanish word, tacos, burritos, menudo, etc. So know I am thinking this is a mini to go type restaurant. I ask, "do you have flour tortillas?" No response, she goes to the side in a very cramped coke a cola freezer under a few bins & brings me 2 sets of very hard old looking tortillas, 1 is dark, 1 is lighter, I am assuming white or wheat. I pick the lighter, she tells me a number in Spanish, I figure out it's $3.50. Mind you there is no expiration date, or ANY form of labeling on the package. I don't even know how many are in the package since she does not speak English & there's no labeling. I get them home, heat the comal and heat up these rock hard, heavy tortillas. They are as HARD AS ROCKS and start to rip and tear. I heated them very minimally. They become unusable and harden very quickly. They were terrible and hard to eat. All I know is I expected to see ROWS & ROWS of beautiful fresh tortillas....Blue ones, Yellow ones maybe even Red ones....NOT HERE. Don't open up a "Tortilleria" if you can't make tortillas. I went here to try & support local business. What a joke. Terrible, don't waste your money. read more
