Tea at the Raleigh Room has really gone down in quality and service the last 6 months or so. They had one waiter for SIX tables which resulted in the waiter having to do quick loops through each table. If you needed anything outside of when he came by, you had to flag him down. There was a manager that probably could have helped but he just stood behind the bar the entire time basically doing nothing. The waiter also poured the water for the tea too high and too fast which resulted in a cup full of leaves... when I drew his attention to this, he told me that the leaves would sink and when I said I'm not drinking this he said well I'll bring you another glass like he was doing me a favor. At the end of service the credit card machine went down and the solution was that everyone would just have to wait until the machine came back online. After 30 minutes of waiting it was still not back up so we had to fill out slips of paper with our credit card information ( which doesn't feel secure at all). The food was fine but the scones are definitely not scones...they taste more like a cookie than anything else. The sandwiches had been sitting out on a table uncovered prior to us arriving which made things that should have been cold room temperature and the bread had gone stale. My total with a glass of champagne, taxes, and mandatory 20% tip ( that they add on to the bill) was $64 which is exorbitant for mid food, a cup full of tea leaves, and less than stellar service. read more

Afternoon Tea for my birthday! Had high expectations for this tea I was not impressed. We arrived early and had to wait to be seated. We asked if we could order anything to snack on or a drink and were told we had to wait until we were seated. We were also informed they don't serve food till 3pm. Once we were seated service was very slow we waited quite some time before the server came over. She explained the tea to us and brought us some water. Once she came back to pour our tea there was some issues with pouring she over poured and got quite a bit of tea in the glass. One of the glasses had to be dumped out and repoured. I honestly expected more from a high end restaurant. Not once did the server acknowledge the birthday. You could clearly tell that there was a birthday at our table there was a flower arrangement my friend gave me with a birthday balloon. People walking thru the restaurant said happy birthday. But not once did our server say anything. The tea was good. Some of the finger sandwiches were good. The desserts were okay. We were not too impressed with any of the offerings. I was looking forward to macrons but there none on our tier. There was some sort of chocolate cake that had white icing that was all dried out it was not visibly pleasing at all. The room is always decorated so beautifully! They had gorgeous flower arrangements! We have been several times and it always seems that the service is not up to par. I like the live music they offer I would consider going back for that! I probably would not go back for a tea! If I could recommend one thing please be more attentive to your guests. Had out of town family for a baby shower afternoon tea. It was so bad I was embarrassed. I've had better service at Waffle House. The server, Ashley, not only had no idea what she was doing, she was extremely rude as well. Told our 85 year old mother "that's how I was taught, Sugar" when she pointed out how badly the tea leaves were falling in the cup. Then said "it's right in front of you" when one of us asked for something else. Had to actually get up and go ask for milk while Ashley played on her phone in the corner. Today they served grilled oyster, Crispy Oyster, Oyster shooters and a Chef Jose walked around shucking oyster at your table. With 3 different pairs of champagne. Our group had a wonderful time here! We each had the afternoon tea with a glass of champagne. The chicken salad croissant and open faced cucumber were both hits in our group. The rockfish was too fishy for my friends, but I enjoyed it. We were not a fan of the ham croissant, it's sort of a pate pork. I've been here several times to people-watch, listen to the live music, have some drinks, and for high tea. Recently, we stopped in on a Friday night at 10pm and were able to sweet-talk the bartender into serving us a sorbet (the kitchen closes AT 10 so we asked exactly as they closed) and decaf french press coffee. The sorbet was the best I've ever had in my life - three flavors in one bowl: raspberry, pineapple and mango I believe. SO good. Texture was perfect, we loved it. The coffee was also Segfredo Italian blend and was hot, delicious and served on classy china. Live music here is excellent and the decor, ambiance and vibe cannot be beat. The beautiful old hotel oozes charm and elegance and the whimsical art on the walls of the Raleigh Room adds to the experience. You can roam around and find a seat in the outer halls, overlooking the pools, or on some of their comfy plush couches inside. High tea is also very good and a fun experience if you like to do that sort of thing. Beautiful music was being played by a pianist and bass player. I choose the Hibiscus energy tea with a great assortment of goodies. The food offered an array of choices and all were very tasty. I loved the fine tea set. It was very relaxing and enchanting atmosphere. The service was great. I highly recommend this to those who can appreciate it. Dress nice but hat not required. What a wonderful experience. I was a little reserved coming in after seeing some reviews on Yelp. I saw a few mentioning a rude waitress and being charged for water like one review said. A lot of the reviews were about the bar and area and a small amount were based off the tea. This review is ALL about the tea experience and not the bar itself. When we first arrived we were unsure about parking. Turns out valet is free and I assume a tip is highly encouraged which we always tip when we use valet. The valet employees were quick and courteous. The doorman was my favorite person ever it actually made me think of the movie Maid in Manhattan at one point. It was a little hard figuring out where we needed to check in for the tea in the Raleigh Room. We asked the person at the hostess stand for the Becca Room where to go. They instructed us to go to the bar in the Raleigh Room. We went to the bar and we were seated instantly. At first it was a little hard to wrap ourselves around that we were kind of in a lobby bar set up. It also made it a little more less enjoyable when the people were congregating meeting up before heading out and being loud with their conversation. That only lasted for maybe five minutes and they disbursed and we enjoyed the rest of our time there. The food was good. I do not think there was one thing we did not like. The curry chicken salad was my favorite sandwich! We came here with our 13 year old daughter and 8 year old son. We were celebrating our 2 year adoption anniversary which is tomorrow. So it honestly was a night experience. We agreed we would come back as long as it remains quiet enough to enjoy a conversation. I'm not sure how bad it is when all things covid let's up. The cost was $38 per person and they do add a 20% gratuity. We did not have to pay for water. I felt maybe we could have paid $30 for what we got. But, the ambiance was great. Made reservations for 4 a month ahead of time, called to add one more person the day of, and was told I can't. Quite surprising considering this is Marriott property, always accommodating especially to its lifelong Marriott Rewards members. It wasn't even crowded, had some families sitting around and they weren't even having tea. There were only 5 kinds of tea to choose from. Wish they served one big pot for each person over warming candle just like other high end afternoon tea places like Ritz Carlton. Here all 4 of us had to share a small pot of hot water which we had to pour over tea leaves, can't benefit from full steeped tea flavor! Our of the finger sandwiches I only liked the curry chicken salad in a croissant. Desserts were very tiny (1 inch cube) of chocolate cake with hazelnut frosting, watermelon/raspberry cake, macarons that weren't crunchy flaky and filling wasn't decadent. We tried booking the holiday afternoon tea for anytime in December back in mid November of last year and were able to book for the regular afternoon tea for January 8th! This is how popular it is! Be sure to check their website to clarify their afternoon tea times as it typically runs on the weekends. It can vary. When checking in for your afternoon tea, the best place to do so is the bar area in the Raleigh Room as this is where you will enjoy the afternoon tea. We checked in and were escorted to our seating directly located in front of the welcoming cozy warm fireplace! Our tea cups and saucers, clotted cream, lemon curd and strawberry preserves were already set, along with the afternoon tea menu. We were absolutely thrilled to have been seated in such a highly coveted location in the lobby as it was an extremely cold chilly day!! We truly appreciated it!! We had a choice of one tea from the six options (Cavalier Black and Vanilla, Citrus Chamomile, Herbal Mint, Hibiscus Energy, Lady Blue Earl Grey, and White Strawberry Blossom). Among our group of three two of us chose the Cavalier Black and Vanilla which was delicious and the strawberry blossom which held true to the flavor as described per our friend. As of typical afternoon teas all three of us received one of each items listed on the menu on a three tiered serving tray. The blueberry scones on top, the desserts on the middle tier and the savory sandwiches on the bottom tier. Staff were friendly and had described the teas and gave us a briefing of all the menu items. It was an enjoyable experience and the LIVE music was actually quite soothing and pleasant. It was the right volume where you could have a normal conversation without yelling to hear one another. We each received a pre-set menu, with the option to order a glass of champagne (because champagne goes with tea, right?). From the 5-6 varieties of tea, I chose the white strawberry blossom which was light, fruity, and the perfect end to summer. I also tasted the Black Vanilla, which was sweet and smooth. We each got an individual pot of water, but were limited to a single tea bag. Among the 8 of us, we were served 4 tea towers complete with finger sandwiches and an assortment of pastries. Some were winners (the chicken curry croissant and coconut cheesecake squares were to-die for!), and others I'd steer clear of (I'm looking at you, salty ham biscuit). Since I didn't want to eat my weight in blueberry scones with lemon curd, I left somewhat unsatisfied - or at least wanting better savory options. Took my great aunt and mom for tea to celebrate their birthdays. Everyone from the valet, doormen, hostess and waitress were very accommodating and patient with us as we helped my elderly aunt walk in and get settled at our table. This was beyond amazing. We got so many goodies. Omg. High Tea should have been a good experience. It was not. Two grandmothers, two granddaughters, and a mother gathered for after Christmas tea. I was not the experience expected nor worth the price. Service was terrible. We didn't have the correct number of sandwiches. The server poured the water incorrectly so tea leaves were in the cup and didn't steep properly. We needed to ask several times for the champagne we ordered and for more hot water. The tea cakes were stale and the scones too sweet. We had to ask for clotted cream, jam & curd. What a wonderful way to ring in the New Year with some friends over afternoon tea in the magnificent Raleigh room at the grand old Cavalier! We braved the chilly weather and were greeted by our lovely hostess. She sat us down in front of the big cozy fireplace at our coffee table, which was exquisitely donned with teacups, saucers, condiments and napkins. The young lady came over to take our order for tea and explained that all the scones, desserts and finger sandwiches were all included with the tea. The wonderful sweets and savories were served on a three-tiered service tray. We had our choice of a variety of tea. Two of us picked the Cavalier Black & Vanilla tea and our friend chose the delicate Strawberry Blossom tea. The staff brought the tea on a strainer set atop our teacup. Then she proceeded to pour the boiling water from each of our pot over the loose leaf in the strainer. We allowed the tea to steep for a few minutes. We had clotted cream, strawberry jam, and lemon curd as they come standard with tea. When they brought the sweet and savory service tray, we so were excited to try it all! Everything, from the cucumber dill finger sandwiches and the egg salad sandwiches to the ham croissants and chicken salad sandwiches were more than satisfying for any appetite! And we had huge appetites before coming to our afternoon tea! The scones were absolutely delicious with the clotted cream, strawberry jam, and lemon curd! But don't forget to pace yourself or you won't have any room for the incredibly delicate yet ultra delicious sweets, from the rich chocolate mousse bar, to the airy macarons, the artistically chocolate dipped strawberries, to the exquisite raspberry layered petit cakes! There appeared to be a man who was a manager, but he was only talking to the staff and not even trying to help out with those who were waiting. We were sat 15 minutes after we arrived. It was another 30 minutes before we were served our food, which turned out to be a huge let down, especially given the restaurant is supposed to be good. What's not to love about a 1920s era Lounge!? I'm blown away by the decor every time I come in here. I wish I could decorate my house this way, but I don't have to taste. Other than the occasional issue with staff behind the bar, and the sometimes long wait to get a drink, the ambience and the delicious drinks make up for both of those things. Recently the Cavalier has expanded the lounge to outdoor seating with views of the ocean and fire pits. You can't beat this place for a pre-dinner or post-dinner drink. I haven't tried the afternoon tea yet, but the reviews make me wanna try it! If you do come here, ask the stories of where the drinks are named from! We stopped by the bar to grab a drink before our reservation at Becca. I normally do not leave reviews below 5 stars, but this place has so much potential and is headed in the wrong direction, my hope is someone in management reads this review. We arrived to a gorgeous space with a nice piano, beautiful bar and ample, comfortable seating. There were several people at the bar waiting for drinks, a disproportional amount given the open seating everywhere. It took my husband 25 minutes to get drinks because a group of women at the bar kept walking up and ordering more rounds, and the bartenders didn't realize there were several people waiting for a first drink order while these women chugged their wines. We ended up having to bring our drinks to Becca and not enjoy the ambience- but that may have saved the night. I'd say the type of local clientele this bar is attracting right now is a mix of "woo girls" and housewives who haven't drank alcohol in public since COVID. Mix that will a guy with a guitar playing DMX, and it really just did not justify spending $19 on a smoked old fashioned in there. If I wanted to see a bunch of women clomp around in ill-fitted heels like Clydesdales and listen to some guy on a guitar pretend to rap, I feel like Peabody's would be a better choice. It would have been hilarious people watching if this place wasn't advertised as a nice bar to have a drink and enjoy your company. I certainly hope the next time we come back, that piano is in use and the ambiance matches the level of sophistication that the drink menu presents.
