Finally made it to Proper Pig. Got here at ~3/330? Greeted immediately, sat outside - was perfect out. Brooke was our waitress and honestly, the best service we've had in a while. I have to admit I was surprisingly conflicted about eating here. My sister lives in the area and had been once previously so she gave it a very strong recommendation. On this visit I went with my sister since it was me visiting without my kids. We ordered our appetizers of onion rings, pork belly shots, Pesto flat bread pizza, and cheeseburger soup. The appetizers were phenomenal! Absolutely blown out of the water by the quality and the taste exclamation 0.100% satisfaction! So we ordered our entrees... I apologize for not remembering the names of each Burger. After 2 bites of my sister's, she stepped outside for fresh air and asked the waitress to simply take it away because it could not be eaten. She selected something else to bring home in the hopes of it being better. My Burger featured onion rings and pulled pork on top and I was surprisingly disappointed at the quality of the pork. It had little to no flavor and actually tasted a bit vinegar question work definitely acidic. I won't claim to be a pulled pork expert, but it is a family favorite and I've eaten it quite often in my life. So I found this very disappointing. Given the exceptional quality of the appetizer, I'm inclined to give them another chance. It could have been a badd day in the kitchen or it could be today chose something that wasn't to my taste. Hi I am local from Oakland and I love eating at local restaurants. I normally don't leave reviews but I feel have to talk about it. I had heard great things about The Proper Pig and I could hardly get in every time I thought about trying it. Anyway for my anniversary with my partner went there just before it got busy around 4. We had ordered the poutine which I was bit surprised form the lack of cheese as I grew up near Canada up North. The sausage gravy and fries were good I just wish it had more cheese. Our server was nice at first however she wouldn't take our plate even after signaling them. When our main course came she would not really talk to us or ask us how it was. The other server that came with our main course had to take care of it and the table we were at was very small so it was difficult for her. If our main server did come up and ask us how it was I would have told her how everything was. As we were waiting for our check and lights were turned on for the evening there were cobwebs everywhere. The fan above the bar was caked in dust. The chandelier near the bar had lots of cobwebs. The breadcrumbs where just piled in the middle under my dried fried chicken. The cutlery was dull so it was difficult to cut food. We had ordered the Expresso Pie with our food as we had high hopes. However the cream pie was grainy with sugar and just way too sweet. The price of everything with no alcohol was 70 between the two of us. I know some people recommend but I wouldn't and I believe if its on your menu it should be executed properly. It was a poor first experience and probably won't give it another chance. read more

The Bloody Mary is one of those meal-in-a-glass things, which is fun, except for the cold bacon, which is gross. But in any case, I will never go back: The owner drove the local farmers' market away from downtown because for a few hours once a week in the summer it blocked a handful of parking spots in front of the restaurant (there is plenty of parking in downtown Waterville, even with the new college dorm looming at one end). That's just bad citizenship. Local business supporting each other is so basic, and if the Proper Pig isn't going to support small business owners (very, very small business owners, in the cases of these hardworking Maine farmers), then they don't deserve anyone's business. read more

Came when a reservation didn't have the menu we wanted and what a blessing. All the staff were so inviting and everything was delicious. We had the potato skins, fried pickles, Mac n cheese, and haddock plate and it was all amazing. The fries are perfectly crispy, the house made ranch had the perfect amount of dill. First time at a Proper Pig tonight, loved it! I had the pulled pork sandwich, Kim had the flatbread pizza, the sandwich was very good, came with excellent fries! Very good service, nice draft beer menu. Happy hour was great, 2 drinks each, plenty of food, $50 with tip, nice! This place was awesome and I'm not even a pork eater. Located downtown in an old brick building. I think it may have been a bank since there was a vault in the dining room. Enjoyed a delicious flight of their own beer. Ordered an a Veggie burger (haha) and my friend had The Propper Popper. Everything was delicious and plated beautifully. Clean bathroom and establishment with visible kitchen. I plan to return to try their happy hour menu. read more

Two of us went here for beers and a bite on a recent evening. It is a pretty cool setting but the prices were a bit high which would have been OK, but portions were skimpy. Neither of us was up for a full meal, so decided to split a couple of appetizers - Wings and Quesadillas. Wings were $10.95. I expect 10-12 wings in an order, but this one was only 7 (they brought 6, apologized and brought the 7th). Quesadillas were filled with chorizo, cheese and some peppers. Tasty, but they started out as 4 4" tortillas, filled and folded. Pretty small portion for $10.95. When it was all done, 4 beers and two appetizers was over $50 before tip, and we were still hungry. read more

Ate here with my husband, father-in-law, and two small children. We all left happy with full bellies! Split the fried cheese curds and pork belly lollipops for apps. Talk about flavor!! The adults all got one of their deliciously creative burgers. Mine was the Razor Back (I think?) with two types of cheeses, pickled onions, peppercorn aioli, roasted tomatoes, and lettuce. Wow! So tasty. I got a side Caesar which was also quite tasty. Hubby got the onion rings which he was a big fan of. Kiddos got mac n cheese and grilled cheese and both enjoyed. We went on a busy night where a show was taking place nearby... so we did have a fairly substantial wait before being seated; however, once we were seated our waitress was spot on the entire time - she took our order quickly, stayed on top of refills, and made sure everything came out quickly and correctly. The pretzels and cheese were amazing - nice, bready pretzel with a rich cheese sauce that came out bubbling hot. I had a Bacon Strut with no tomato for my main meal, and that was excellent as well! This restaurant has the BEST burgers. Especially their Big Bad Wolf. My son loves the bacon burger with pickles.

We sat at the bar and had great service. Bar drinks were good, great bartender. Very attentive. We first had the wings, honey sriracha. The wings were super crispy. The blue cheese was thick and delicious. We then had bacon dusted fries and fried pickles. Pickles were good (ordinary), fries not soo much. Too much "dust" and not enough bacon. Good food but questionable ethics. I've been to Proper pig a couple of times, and I've always enjoyed their food. However, the last time I visit, I watched two women slowly get more and more intoxicated. They began to hit on and heckle the staff. When they left, they could barely stand and were stumbling and slurring their words. My friends and I were shocked as we watched them fumble and drop their car keys! One even fell over. We debated among ourselves whether to call the police, but there were multiple Proper Pig workers at the outdoor dining area, and we assumed they'd deal with it. Not at all accommodating to elderly or handicapped. Our party of six was placed by the kitchen and rear patio entrance, not the best location for two elderly handicapped persons. The menu focuses on attention-getting combinations and descriptions, and not so much on quality. (E.g., a burger with a glazed doughnut) The website menu has not been updated in a while; pity, they had some beers I would have liked to try. The actual beer selection was much smaller. Maine seems to be plagued with a proliferation of terrible restaurants. Don't even get me started about how much I hate the China Diner. I don't have enough memory on my phone to rant about that place! The Proper Pig is not terrible. I give them high marks for their decor, location , and having the courage and vision to open a bar/restaurant in the wasteland of Waterville. Never mind that there are three notable colleges there, somehow poor Waterville never seemed to escape its run down mill town ethos. This too is changing and I remain hopeful. I digress. To me the Proper Pig is a bar serving bar food , which is fine I suppose if you want a bar with bar food. The trouble I have with the place is that they are trying to convince me they are a restaurant and actually care about the food they turn out. The menu is boring. So much so I had to read it over trying to find something that wasn't an over priced burger or some pseudo trendy obnoxious dish with bacon. Bacon sprinkled fries? Ok, so I love bacon and pork products as much as the next guy but a celebration of the noble pig could certainly include more ambitious and creative entries then what is offered here. I was in no mood for anything coming from a cow or a pig on this night so I ordered the grilled salmon sandwich. That's another bitch, I really loathe menus that give their dishes cute names. If I wanted that crap I would go to Denny's for the moon over my Hammy. The sandwich was billed as a grilled salmon filet on grilled brioche. I think it had some wasabi mayonnaise on it , tomato , and the ever festive shredded lettuce. I didn't want the fries that it came with so I asked my server if I could substitute a little salad. She said of course , and my order was whisked away. Ten minutes later my plate arrived. The salad on one side of the plate and my sandwich on the other. How can I describe the feeling I get when someone overcooks a piece of salmon. Salmon to me is a glorious fish and despite what these fools seem to believe is best seated lightly until the meat takes on a soft solid pink color and flakes apart easily when poked gently with a fork. Your welcome, now you know how to cook salmon properly. This thing was closer to white than pink and would have been just as happy on a filet of fish sandwich as in my plate. Sorry , there fish at least isn't overlooked. The bun. I'm not sure what the technical definition of brioche is but I am pretty sure it is not a hamburger bun from Hannaford. The bun was stone cold , not grilled at all , which allowed all the slop , and only precious moisture remaining in this bleak act of fish abuse to escape as it sifted handily through the bun creating a soggy mess. I was forced of necessity to pick at the thing with a fork, whilst praying none of my fellow diners noticed my peculiar display. The salad was the one dab of shining acceptability in this otherwise tsunami of disappointment. The salad was a pleasing mix of spinach and arugula, which was really nice. I was delighted and surprised to see the arugula appear on the salad. I thought that showed a lot of bravery and confidence on the part of the chef. Well done sir. In conclusion, the service , atmosphere, and location of the Proper Pig are all very appealing and the food itself is not that bad , just like so many other restaurants I stumble into it could be so much better. Mediocrity is the kiss of death to a restaurant. I speak as one who owned a restaurant and knows what it takes to keep the door open. One more bitch and I'm through. When I was paying my tab I noticed a blank charge of $1.95. I enquirer with my server on this point and was told it was an up charge for abandoning the suggested fries that normally came with the sandwich. It seemed uncalled for and heavy handed to me. I left feeling used and abused - not the way you want your customer to feel! I wish them great success, Waterville desperately needs great food, but sadly , it isn't here. read more

You really need to "swine and dine" at The Proper Pig! A great pub atmosphere and the Pulled Pork Piggy (I think that was the name) was excellent. Tried for the first time last night. Four of us went, got seated properly even though they were busy. Lots of servers so getting waited on was quick and easy. I server was polite and knowledgeable about the menu. We were looking forward to getting a meals. We all ordered something different and when we left we all agreed that we would probably not be going back. The food was mediocre although the portions were plentiful. $12 for a Long Island iced tea was way too much! Especially since it wasn't very good.
