WE came in January 28th for my father's birthday, we were a party of 6 and were seated straight away. This place knows how service works. We had a main server and the rest of the staff helps to ensure things come out and that everyone is happy. Pretty much had everything on the menu, food came out in good order as they ask that we make all of our ordering at the start with exception of desert,m this really helps them time the dining experience and I approve. We came here for a birthday dinner and it was uniformly great. It's a beautiful restaurant and slightly easier to score a table there than its excellent sister restaurant State Bird Provisions. I was impressed by the friendly and attentive level of service, though it was kind of funny that we interacted with like 4 different people including our server. Whatever. They were great and the food was excellent. Low Tide Cocktail: It's surprisingly pretty and delicate for something with a name like that AND it contains barley, cilantro, and chile vinegar. Wonderful. It makes me curious about everything else on the menu. Harissa Cauliflower a la Plancha: I loved the bits of char on the cauliflower with the chickpeas. Good balance of sweet, tart, bitter, and salty. Wild Mushroom & Farro Verdo "Risotto": Mmm farro. No rice here. Just great flavor, rich color, and delicious lacy fried onions on top. A hearty dish. Josey Baker Whole Grain Bread: I asked for this mid-meal after craving some extra carbs (I'm cheap and it's $10). It was SO delicious with the seed-topped apple cider-whipped butter! A surprise winner. Chile Roja-Roasted Don Watson Lamb: I thought it would be a tiny dish with slices of lamb. No. It was a giant-ass platter of roasted meat, sliced sausage, vegetables, and the wonderful lake of red sauce. On the side, they served a pile of fresh tender tortillas and a chunky salsa (?) to hold all of the wonderful lamb. This is more substantial than I expected and great to share. Brown Butter Seaweed Noodles: Great depth of flavor between the mushroom and fluttering bonito flakes (always dramatic). We were celebrating my hubby's birthday. He was so happy we were able to get a reservation at The Progress. We started with the Caviar Potato Cloud which was good; it had little crunchy bits in there with the caviar and the foam-very nice variances in textures. Next, we had the Potatoes with Nori Tartar & Black Butter Ponzu. The nori seaweed gave it a nice crunch while the butter was so smooth and so decadent. The showstopper was the BBQ Half Duck with Peanut Fried Rice and a side of Kim Chee. The duck was succulent, tender, infused with a savory BBQ taste. The Fried Rice was refreshingly different with a nice crispy feel from the peanuts. The Kim Chee was a pleasant addition to it all. We were very impressed by the dishes /offerings at The Progress. The duck was delectable and memorable. From the maitre 'd to the wait staff and bartender, they were all super attentive and cordial. They ensured all patrons were comfortable and enjoying themselves. They were very helpful with dish selection and took the time to explain what was in each dish. They also checked for food allergies, which isn't always done. What a nice touch. The maitre'd ensured my hubby enjoyed his birthday by seating us in a nice booth, which we were so grateful for. Dinner last night at The Progress was such a mixed experience! The food was delicious -- full of flavor and beautifully presented. We ordered two "Western addition" small plates, two veggie dishes, and the BBQ Liberty Farms half duck. Standouts for me were the peanut fried rice that accompanied the duck and the heart of palm and crispy Hodo tofu. I'm vegetarian and was happy to see plenty of inventive options on the menu to choose from. The space felt bright and airy and inviting. The warm woods and high ceilings, along with the casual vibe, made for a chill and un-stuffy atmosphere. At the same time, though, the seating felt very cramped, and as the tables filled up (we'd arrived at 5:30), the noise level quickly surged. We were seated essentially shoulder-to-shoulder with other diners, and it became impossible to hear our own conversation over our neighbors'. We even had to strain to hear what the servers were saying to us (more on that in a sec). Frustrating! Speaking of servers: The service, in our experience, was very uneven. We were waited on by at least six different staff members, and *most* were prompt, gracious, and knowledgeable. We asked a question about a dish and heard a detailed, confidently delivered description of every ingredient and aspect of the dish's preparation. Our table was swiftly wiped down between dishes and our water glasses were frequently refilled. Silverware appeared out of nowhere and perfectly matched our needs! The first service hiccup came when we found ourselves waiting a long time, after finishing our Western Additions, for our veggie dishes (the Hodo tofu and Front Porch Farm potatoes). A server eventually came by to ask us whether we'd gotten them or not...? The question surprised me -- I thought that the staff, especially at a well-regarded restaurant such as this one, kept track of diners' orders...? Unfortunately, too, I didn't catch the whole question, and while we eventually got the tofu, the potatoes never appeared. (We didn't pursue the matter, though, as the dishes we did receive were more than plenty.) A second hiccup: A server came by at one point to say that she'd just realized that one of us was a vegetarian (I'd made a note of it on our reservation). Did I want a special vegetarian fried rice...? I didn't think I needed it -- and by this time we were midway through our meal -- but my dining partner urged me to accept, so I did. But the promised special dish never appeared. So strange! Finally, when the check arrived, we noticed that the missing potatoes were included in the total. We asked to have that charge removed, and -- another surprise -- the server became defensive ("But when I asked you whether you'd gotten it, you said yes," etc.). I tried to explain that I'd missed most of her question -- it was simply too loud to hear properly -- and that it was nobody's fault. In any case, the charge was removed, so no worries. But still: the forgotten potatoes, the mysterious vegetarian fried rice, and the friction over the bill left us feeling unsettled and a little disappointed with what we'd hoped would be an all-around stellar experience. read more

Had dinner here yesterday night 12/6. We were seated in a small table all the way in the back right before the kitchen. Lush green planters separated us from the small table next to us. Two level seating, high ceilings, busy, loud atmosphere. Our sever explained how the menu worked from lighter courses (vegetables), to medium courses (western additions) eventually to more savory/large courses (seafood/meats). I thought that was how our dishes will be served which made sense to me. So we opted for 2 light courses, 2 medium courses and 1 savory filling course. Instead what came out was 2 medium courses to start, the smoked green Chile pork sausage and the Tierra vegetable masa dumplings (much later). After our plates were cleared, we were handed together another plate of pork sausages and dumplings. I told her we just finished those two orders..She quickly took it away and we waited and waited. The whole dinner took 2 hours for 5 plates. It was A LOT of waiting in between dishes. I looked around and apparently everyone else was waiting too. Service was ok, severs were all busy but not super attentive. Finally, our radicchio & persimmon salad arrived with the coal-roasted wok chop & crispy tofu. What a lovely experience! The servers were so attentive and professional. I sat down and dropped my fork and immediately someone ran from behind and exchanged it for me. Every time my party went to the restroom, someone would come and fold their towelette. The food was also awesome. We came for the duck, and we left full because we also ordered the seasonal radicchio & persimmon salad and the seaweed noodles. The radicchio and persimmon salad was a wonderful surprise. We weren't sure what flavors to expect nor the size, and both exceeded expectations. The radicchio had a slight kick, almost like wasabi. The sweetness from the persimmon, kick from radicchio, and savory flavor from the Gouda was perfectly blended. Portion size is generous. The seaweed noodles grew on us. Full Belly Farms new potatoes with mendocino nori tartar and black butter ponzu Crispy, savory perfection. The nori tartar and ponzu add an umami-packed punch. Totally addictive. Squash blossom & ricotta sorpresine with charred yellow tomatillo and husk cherries A pasta dream. The combination of ricotta, tomatillo, and husk cherries was summery and rich without being heavy. Tierra Vegetables masa dumplings with toma cheese and huitlacoche crema Cheesy, earthy, and decadent. A comfort dish with depth and complexity. Josey Baker rosemary polenta bread with honey herb butter Crusty, fragrant, and served with butter that could be dessert on its own. BBQ Liberty Farms half duck with peanut fried rice and smoked chile vinegar The star of the meal. Smoky, tender, juicy duck balanced perfectly by the savory fried rice and tangy chile vinegar. Cocktails Lost Highway (brandy, sesame, banana, almond, lemon) was bold, silky, and tropical without being too sweet. The Swarm (Barr Hill Tom Cat gin, guava, vermouth, bitter bianco) was crisp and floral with a beautiful balance. Non-Alcoholic Dr. Strangelove (Lucano amaro, ginger, almond, lime) was one of the best non-alcoholic cocktails we've had--complex, refreshing, and satisfying. Dessert Double chocolate oat tart with red Sichuan cream and grilled pluot caramel was rich, spicy, sweet, and salty all at once. We also had two of the iconic World Peace peanut milks, which are absolutely worth it. Every detail, from the inventive flavors to the handmade ceramics, feels curated and intentional. The service is warm, professional, and on-point without ever feeling fussy. We still haven't been to their sister restaurant, State Bird Provisions, and honestly, it's tough to branch out when The Progress is this good. Veg on one side; meat and seafood on the other. The overlap are the snacks - why, I don't know. These smaller plates made no sense. The masa dumplings were the size of your thumb whereas the pig head salad was huge. The highlight was the trout - well presented and cooked. We all enjoyed this. I also really enjoyed the radicchio and persimmon salad which was fresh and tasty. The rest was overpriced and uninspired. The biggest joke was the bok choy for $24. They managed to quarter one baby bok choy and give us only 3/4. Bok choy is the main ingredient and it's cheap! In hindsight, we all agreed this was the dumbest dish we ordered. The duck was beautifully presented but at $80, we were expecting more. It was bland and tasteless and the fried rice was soft with no bite. I have had much better of both in Chinese restaurants. Overall, a disappointing meal. Given how many great restaurants there are in SF, I'd opt for somewhere else. It's too expensive for the quality of food. read more

The Progress is a good alternative to State Bird Provisions (same owner) because they take reservations and you don't have to wait in a ridiculous line at State Bird Provisions. The vegetarian dishes are definitely the stars here. Here are my $0.02 on the latest menu: * Caviar potato cloud: great amuse bouche; a staple menu item * Radicchio and persimmons with gouda and pecans: epitome of fall flavors; radicchio had a mild flavor that paired well with the sweetness of the persimmons * Cauliflower a la plancha with pumpkin mole: first time having pumpkin mole and it was delicious * Brown butter seaweed noodles with oyster mushrooms and bonito flakes: interesting, but I have had better noodles in Asian restaurants. * Rabbit sausage with red cabbage: rabbit sausage was not seasoned well and the sauce was too acidic; this is one dish that I did not like (1 star off) * Peppermint chocolate cake: good, but tasted like something made from the Trader Joe's peppermint chocolate cake mix * World peace peanut milk: ultimate comfort drink; I always finish my meals here with this drink In the past, I have enjoyed their duck with spicy peanuts, which is a standing menu item. We didn't need any more than the portion they gave us. Went here for a business/team dinner and was lucky to reserve the balcony table which fits up to 10 people. I've been wanting to host a dinner here because the table is round which is great for conversation, and it's above the kitchen/restaurant for a semi private feel. There is a F&B minimum, but it's not hard to meet with 8-10 people. Food alone will meet the minimum because you have to do a tasting menu at $130/person. Not a bad deal for how much food you get! Everything here was tasty, but my least favorite dishes were the trout and dessert. They tasted fine to be clear, but the mix of flavors was my least favorite of the night. The chef snacks and courses before main entrees were all so good and highly vegetarian. The two main course entrees were trout and duck. Interesting choices of protein in my opinion. But they're known for the duck, and it did not disappoint! Probably my fave duck dish outside of Chinese duck preparation. The fried rice it came with paired perfectly. It does have peanuts on top. Luckily our group had no allergies there. They accommodated my vegetarian colleague with her own separate main course dish (since everything is served family style), but I didn't see what they served her. I believe it was the rice and maybe some veggies? The meringue dessert with mint wasn't a hit for the table or me, but the meringue on top was good. The chocolate cookie had some definite cacao (it wasn't very sweet). But we got a complimentary dessert from their sister restaurant (State Bird P) next door (ice cream sandwich) because two of our colleagues have June bdays, and that was amazing! If you value a restaurant's creativity above all else, you might like The Progress. If you're like me, a bit traditional and discerning for high quality simplicity, you might be overwhelmed and confused. The "corn dumpling" was basically a deconstructed tamale for $18. The lamb was tasty and came with pomegranate fish sauce and turmeric crepes but it didn't cohere as an entree. I commend the staff for a very pleasant experience (shoutout to Christian S). I will stick to their sister restaurant The Anchovy Bar and the many other long running restaurant institutions in San Francisco. read more

The front of the restaurant itself looks very unassuming and is almost like a hole in the wall. *WAIT TIME* We had a birthday reservation for Saturday night at 7:30pm, so we didn't have to wait. We got seated instantly despite it being a packed restaurant. *FOOD* There is an a la carte menu with a diverse range of dishes ranging from veggies to meats and appetizers. - Caviar Potato Cloud: small portion, but DELICIOUS!!! It was very airy and light, like potato foam. Suggest ordering one for each person. - Fire-kissed shishito peppers: spicy and tasty. the sauce was interesting and leveled out the spicier pieces. - Cavatelli pasta: Pasta was nice and chewy. the blackberries actually paired pretty well - Half duck: Unpopular opinion but the duck ($$$!) was just okay. It had the texture of ham, which is not something we expected. The rice was good, but a little too gingery. We were trying to save the pasta to eat with the duck, but ended up sitting there for a looooong time before realizing that the waitress was waiting for us to finish the pasta. Really enjoyed this spot! Great to come with a group. Apps were okay... mains were delicious. Service is fast and the ambiance inside is so lovely! here is what we got: -Caviar Potato Cloud (3/5): it was honestly a bit cold and the potato was not as crispy as I would have liked. The flavors were there though, just a bit dull given the temperature and texture. -Bok choy and tofu (3/5): also just alright... nothing special. nice lighter addition to the meal -Albacore (2/5): honestly, was not a huge fan of the albacore. Not as melty as I would usually like fresh sashimi that is seared. -Brown butter seaweed noodles (4.5/5): these noodles were cooked perfectly al dente with a nice mushroom sauce, excellent savory flavor! I was really scraping up every last bite of sauce since it was so good... I just wish the portion was bigger! -Half duck (5/5): honestly, this made the meal. Might have been the best duck I have ever had, and I do not even like duck. The meat was so tender and juicy, with the nice crisp skin, and the fried rice was cooked perfectly! a bit al dente almost, with a nice almost crispiness, pairing so well with each thinly sliced piece of duck I would come here for the brown butter seaweed noodles and the half duck! Had a chance to try The Progress, sister restaurant of State Birds Provisions and had a great time! If you are looking for a Michelin Star restaurant this is a nice spot to try out for a different variety of dishes. The meal is meant to be family style, so what you order is fun to share with the entire table. Service was also very nice here - and enjoyed that they changed the plates after a few of the tries - I do wish though that some plates were not so chipped. We got to try: * tempura zapallito squash (3/5) - this was a deep fried squash dish which came with a nice sauce on the bottom which added flavor. This dish was okay, but nice if you are looking for a crunch * Full belly farm fresh dug potatoes (4/5) - I really enjoyed this dish personally as I am a huge fan of the fish - the creamy dill sauce was fantastic and the flavors went well together * corn & black pepper-ricotta cavatelli (5/5) - I really liked this dish a lot, especially with how unique it was. I am a huge fan of corn and every bite a sweet pillowy cheesy crunch to it which I enjoyed * caviar potato cloud (5/5) - If you like caviar and potatoes this is a really cool dish. I loved that there was a potato foam on top and there was crispy crunchy pieces of potato on the bottom. Overall the dish really went well together and would highly recommend to try one! * Alaskan halibut (3/5) - this dish was good but nothing outstanding in terms of a unique sense. It was a little more poached and came with a nice broth sauce. The fish was tender but nothing I haven't had before * Grilled bone-in pork chop (5/5) - I personally really loved this dish as it also came with fried squid, beans and this delicious berry compote. The pork chop was nice and soft - and all the flavors and textures went really well together * bbq liberty farms half duck (4/5) - this is the dish that the Progress is famous for and it did not disappoint! The duck was soft, melt in your mouth and really well made. Personally, i wish there was some sort of sauce that went with the duck (as the fried rice was yummy but very simple) but this was a fun dish to try * Donuts w ice cream - this was the first dessert on the menu and I thoroughly enjoyed this. I wish the donuts were a little warmer but delicious nonetheless! * semifreddo - this is a lighter dessert, with creaminess and tart. Overall enjoyed this one as well! We went last night for a small bite and drinks. They don't disappoint. We were happily seated and greeted very kindly by the wait staff. Everyone was extremely welcoming and friendly. I honestly love San Francisco because of this type of warmth of a restaurant. I enjoyed the scallop crudo so much. I was tempted to get a second one. It was lovely and meticulously displayed on a bed of ice. Seriously, the attention to detail is really remarkable. Thank you for being so close in proximity to us and so enjoyable. I'm so grateful that the atmosphere and the people and staff were oozing with friendliness. I can't commend them enough. The restaurant design is killer too. Definitely go, and you won't be disappointed. Neighboring table got the seaweed noodles and it smelled incredible. The sparkling brut was a tad sweet but still a treat. Convinced by a friend, we gave The Progress a try despite not loving State Bird Provisions years ago. We're glad we did, as the food had some great highlights. Overall, we enjoyed the meal, though some dishes stood out more than others. The caviar potato cloud was fantastic (great texture contrast), the Hokkaido scallop crudo was refreshing, and the black cod was absolutely perfect--moist, soft, and smooth. Less impressive were the Hodo tofu and the sesame bread, which was served cold. We were surprised by the service and seating for a one-star restaurant. Our waitress was unhelpful with recommendations and the general service felt less attentive than expected. The close seating (our table was half an inch from the next) was also awkward and unexpected. We may return, but it's not a top priority for us. read more

honestly it's worth a try because of the hype for the duck, which is good, but maybe not spectacular. a lot of the menu is overpriced and you will definitely leave feeling not fully fulfilled. service is amazing and they give great recommendations since they know the menu well read more
