We are in California from Boston and wanted to take the scenic route from San Francisco to LA and ended up here for breakfast completely by accident and it was destiny. What a delightful breakfast. I stopped in to have a coffee.....Nothing special, just coffee. The service is what you would expect, and the coffee was good. I did not like the way the place is laid out, it needs some improvement, not a good flow for traffic, between seating area and front counter. Also, they need to put a door retractor going out to the patio, because everyone is born in a barn and cannot close the door, and the cold coastal air freezes out the place. My wife and I came here looking for a nice breakfast/brunch spot. I saw Lox and bagels on the menu and was instantly hooked. They ended up being sold out of bagels so I asked to have the lox on a biscuit instead and it was a fantastic substitute! Very much hit the spot. Also, the orange juice is out of this world. I don't think I've ever had more freshly squeezed oj. My wife got the breakfast wrap which was also super good. All in all, would highly recommend if you're looking for a great food spot near the water. Will never stop in here again. I dropped in here on a whim while on our way to the HMB Pumpkin Festival. I was a bit hungry and wanted to get something to eat before arriving at the festival. It was around 10ish when I stopped in. The fam stayed in the car while I dropped in to place an order to go. There was a line as expected, but it moved fairly fast. Upon ordering at the front register with a young girl, I inquired about two different items on the menu and one particularly, the breakfast burrito. She immediately copped an attitude and took the menu and read to me and said " It has what it says it has " I looked at her and served her the attitude right back and told her it was not specific with certain things, because breakfast burritos usually come with hash browns inside hence the reason I asked. I ended up just ordering the burrito and told her what I didn't want on it that it said it comes with...well, to serve my purpose for questioning what comes on it, the " Ranchero sauce " that they say comes on it, no longer is added on it " Well, my dear, THATS WHY I ASK QUESTIONS ". It also comes with home fries which I opted out on. $13.00!!? Anyhow, it then took over a half hour to get, and while waiting to get my food, I begin to notice more and more how dirty the place was. AND, to top it, One of the two young girls that was working the iPad/register ( handling cash and cc) Went to go prepare a person's bagel without washing their hands...AND her nails were super dirty!! Yuck! I FINALLY got my burrito and was almost hesitant to eat it, but was starving. The burrito was decent though not spectacular and certainly not good enough to return. If you don't like the Press, there's something wrong with you. Get in your Tesla, go back over the hill, and go get in line at Stacks. I've been coming here for almost two years. It's a bit of a gem in the sense that it's good at so many things at once - atmosphere, food, service. This is a place that focuses on quality as much as quantity and where the owner is working as hard as his employees. The old breakfast menu was already bomb, and the new one is just fantastic. They keep things simple and don't overextend themselves, focusing on just a couple of "trendy" items (Avocado Toast, Chix and Waffles) and some old fashioned standards (biscuits and gravy). They even serve Chilaquiles now!!! This is hands down my favorite place to get breakfast/brunch in HMB or anywhere for that matter. The pastries are freshly made every day, and are fantastic. Croissants are buttery and flaky, cinnamon rolls better than Cinnabon. Everything is incredibly reasonably priced considering it's in the heart of an area where there's a tourist tax on everything. Get a freshly-made bacon-artichoke-cheese croissant and hot coffee, spend less than you would at $tarbucks and your day is off to a great start. The WiFi is also great, so it's a great spot for getting some work done. Sure, the place is a bit small and fills up quick on the weekends, but it's right by the harbor so get something to go and eat on a bench by the water. Easy parking, quick service, delicious food! You order at the register and seat yourself. The atmosphere is very casual. They have 8 different coffees to choose from with all the fixings at your disposal. I didn't see decaf coffee and asked, the guy told me it would be 5 minutes. The group in front of us today seemed surprised that they weren't going to be able to eat at the restaurant... obviously COVID has had things closed around here for a while now.... the employee at the counter stated "all of California is shut down right now!" to which I excitedly replied "Sacramento opened today!" I was stoked that we are all getting a little closer to reopening. I don't understand how anyone wouldn't be excited for any sign of progress in reopening within any part of the state. I don't know if she thought I was part of the group ahead of me, or if she thought I was complaining or something, but regardless it was extremely rude. Being stuck in traffic is better than eating this food. I ordered the Chipped Beef sandwich with the tomato soup. The soup was watered down, which is not something I expected from a place that has "cafe grilled cheese" written on its side... I mean you dip grilled cheese in tomato soup! The sandwich was awful. It was topped with tri-tip and gravy rather than have the meat inside with gravy on the side. I didn't like the taste of the greasy meat so I took it off and ended up with a greasy soggy cheese sandwich that I attempted to dip in the completely watered down soup. I also tried some French fries and they tasted like mold, at which point I was just done with the place. Side note- the service is bad, the woman taking my order acted as if it was a hassle to do it. I really wanted this to be great, unfortunately it wasn't. I'll start with the good...it's a cute venue and the location is good. Now the bad. I've only been here this once, so I am just commenting on what I had and my experience! I came in to order 2 sandwiches to go. I got to the counter and the woman behind it asked my order. I wanted a cubano and a BL turkey and cheese. She asked me what sides I wanted, and seemed utterly disgusted that I didn't want any (facial expression, tone and roll of eyes gave it away). She read the order back to me (which was wrong and had to be corrected) then told me the total...$26.16...! I handed over my card and she was far more interested in counting the tip jar in front of me than she was serving me. Proceeded to slam my card down with the receipt and that was it. I didn't have to wait too long for the food, so that was a plus at least. The food itself was way to complicated and more than overpriced. The meat in the cubano was cold and honestly, the whole thing was bland. The other one should not be made with Gorgonzola - it was not a good mix (and I love Gorgonzola!!). It was meant to come with bacon - you'll need to send a search party to find it! And both sandwiches were dripping profusely with some questionable orange oily type of liquid. I couldn't finish mine as it was too greasy and the taste was too much, so it's sitting in the garbage container outside the restaurant. If you want great grilled cheese, go to "the American grilled cheese kitchen" in San Francisco - it's sooooooooo much better!!!!! read more

It's been a while Yelp. Looking good...different...but good. I've been a little busy the past 12 months with a new job, moving, new baby, marriage, you know...life in general. Now that I'm officially a beach bum living in Moss Beach, I have plenty new places to review. I'll start with "The Press" which, according to local lore, is pretty good.... First off...the food is good. Whoever is in the kitchen knows what they are doing. I have no issues with this part. But much like a beautiful woman without any substance isn't ideal, there is more than one dynamic needed to make for a memorable and repeatable dining experience. The flow and the layout of the restaurant is terrible. People are walking on top of each other, you have to constantly move out of the way of wait staff taking food to diners while waiting in line to order...the "prep" area is actually split between two different sides of the restaurant. It's a hot mess. And my biggest pet peeve...the flies. I know every restaurant has a challenge with this but I know there are things that can be done about this. There were no less than at least 6 flies buzzing all around us (and in the display case for the pastries). I wasn't happy. Again...the food is amazing. I think with a little bit of organization and a couple of commercial UV fly killers in place - The Press has a shot to be one of the better places in the entire area. It's in a cool spot, staffed by nice and attentive people with great food. My advice - sit in the outside patio and all the previous issues I mentioned aren't a factor. Okay, not five stars...SEVEN stars! Best salads on the coast, each one is delicious and unique. We've tried every one of them and the tuna is our fav. We've also tried all of the sandwiches. Think of it as gourmet grilled cheese of the 'foodie' variety created by a former chef from Farallon in the City. The Cuban sandwich is wow. Even the old standard dishes like omelettes taste so much better. I'm not home fries person, I almost always sub for that. But sweet Jesus, his home fries are crispy and perfectly seasoned.
