The Pony is not your typical bar for the area. The Pony is unassuming; not the type of place one goes to see or be seen. The Pony is the type of bar one may come to enjoy the company of friends, enjoy the game, enjoy the relaxed atmosphere, or enjoy the food. The Pony feels more like a neighborhood bar. The staff is just as welcoming. The food is what will keep me coming back. Natural, thick cut fries. All with crisp golden brown edges, and soft interiors. They are delicious on their own. They also offer them smothered in gravy and cheese, if that is your thing. Just as delicious are their sandwiches. The beef on a wrek was everything I hoped it would be and more. This Western New York staple is more than welcome here in Cincinnati. Rare and fresh roast beef is piled high on a roll. The roll is topped with kosher salt and caraway seeds. Au jus and horseradish are served on the side. Quality is top notch. They really take bar food to the next level. My friend enjoyed her chicken finger sandwich. Chicken finger in their sandwiches are topped with choice of wing sauce. Person next to us ordered the wings. They came out so hot it looked like steam was pouring off of them. This is a wing review. We came here for stop number 2 of our wing tour in Cincinnati. Upon entering, the place was clean and has a old rustic feeling that I enjoyed. We ordered sriracha white pepper, Parm garlic, and the Tom Tucker's hot sauce. I really liked the different sauces, something other than the hot, mild, spicy garlic etc you always see. The sriracha sauce was good. Nice spice but not too hot. There was a slight funky taste that kinda throw it off. Overall a 6/10 The parm garlic sauce was good. Parm cheese shavings, the sauce was plentiful. Overall a 8/10 The Tom Tucker sauce was like a spicy tomato sauce. I felt like it was missing something. But the heat sneaks up on you. I have never been in a worse mood/ more hangry than before arriving at the Pony. Anything could have tripped my wire. The antidote: sriracha naked gluten free hot wings! They say capsaicin (you know, the chemical that makes hot wings hot) can tickle your mu opioid receptors and deplete substance P. Nerd-science-free-explanation: my mood improved dramatically. I could order wings 100 more times and never have them turn out as perfect: the skins were flaky brown like a butterball turkey on Thanksgiving. This one is a tough one to review for me. This has some things going for it, and some drawbacks. I'm going to go 3 stars, but depending on what you are looking for, go up or down from there. We went to eat. I think that was our problem. We love to compare chicken wings at different places and the Pony had received a decent write up on the wings. As far as the wings go, I was not impressed. They were good size, but they were a little underdone for my taste. No crispiness at all. The ranch and blue cheese were both very good. We got a side of fries to go with. For $5, I expect more than a handful of fries. They were fine. Better than average fries. The one highlight was the "cincy queso", which for $2 on the side of the fries was a good size bowl of cheesy dip with Cincinnati style chili. If you're there with friends and want a snack, try the fries with the queso. Pretty tasty as a snack. I didn't see if there was an option to get the queso with chips or Fritos, but that would be delicious. I think where this place really shines is as a "neighborhood" bar. It has a more chill vibe than some of the places a block or two over. The TV's actually show sports instead of vintage movies on silent, there isn't an overwhelming list of drinks, you won't get sneered at if you want a bud light, there was room to walk, at least when we were there fairly early in the evening. Overall, a different feel than Vine Street. Across from MOTR and next to the Woodward Theater, this seems like it would be a great place to have a drink if you are coming to or from some live music. If you are looking for something a little different than the standard Vine Street offering, stop in to The Pony and see if it is your kind of place. read more

After a few disappointing stops on the burger week trail, I was hoping to redeem the week with a stop at The Pony. And I have to say I was incredibly impressed. Especially by a first year participant! Firstly, I love dives and despite being located in the ever popular OTR, this place made me feel immediately comfortable (even though it lacked a certain nostalgic smell of damp cigarettes). I sat at the bar and found the seats quite comfortable (despite some earlier reviews of the booth seats). And the staff was extremely welcoming. The burger was made with Eckerlin meats - which was a serious draw for me... when you start with a solid burger, it's hard to funk up the final product. The flavors worked extremely well together - the tomato jam is sweet with a spicy kick and the pile pimento cheese adds a dreamy taste and mouthfeel. Topped with onion crispies - my everything was satisfied. I added the fries and queso and it was way more food than I could eat alone. Also, the burger was cooked a PERFECT medium but if that isn't yo thang, I'd recommend specifying your cook. I'll definitely back!!! read more

Randomly we're looking for a place to get a cheesesteak as 13th St Alley wasn't open and my GF found this place on Google. Didn't know what to expect. Definitely didn't expect to have one of the best cheesesteaks of my life, but that's what happened. It was ridiculously tasty and the side portion of fries was enough for us to share. The food was dropped off to us surprisingly fast and the bartender was really really really awesome. We will be back very soon. Perfect cozy-dive bar vibes in the middle of OTR. Menu was great--we had a hard time choosing what to get off the limited but well thought out menu. Our table ordered the special of the week the Pastrami Sandwich (SO good), chicken tenders (also amazing), fries (good) with Cincinnati style queso (different. tasted better with fritos than with the fries, more of a chili dip to me than a queso), and the fried bologna sandwich (slippery/messy but tasty). Drink menu also offered some solid options and variety. Cleaner and more well-kept than a typical dive but prices are right and the ambiance fits. Music was not great, and bar was slightly too quiet upon arrival but as it picked up the silence dissipated. There was only one person working the bar/tables the Thursday night we came so service was expectedly slow but unexpectedly inhospitable but I don't think that will deter us from return visits! read more

Great, cozy little bar. The actual bar has quite a bit of seating and then there are a couple large high tops and some booths. They have a good drink menu with reasonable prices and they had some great winter inspired drinks. For the food. The menu is small but everything sounds amazing so it was tough to decide. I ended up going for the Friday night fish fry. It was the best! The fish was huge and perfectly crispy and delicious. I love fried fish but I always worry it will be too greasy. Thankfully this fish was not greasy at all! Yay to eating something yummy and not feeling like garbage after. And it was served with homemade tartar sauce and perfectly seasoned fries. Ordered the Beef on Weck and didn't understand that it was served cold. The sandwich was tough and after further inspection it looks like the meat is completely raw besides the edges. The meat was blood red and not good at all. The servers continued to tell me that the sandwich was good to eat and the kitchen staff could care less to speak to me. Cool vibes. I wish it was more outdoor seating tho. It's only one table outside. I ordered wings, fries and a beer. It definitely quenched my hunger/thirst. The menu is small but great. The Philly is second to none in the city in my opinion. The last times I was there a cook from the kitchen saw me eating through the kitchen window and gave me the "how's the food" thumbs up. Great to know the kitchen staff cares. Burger week served it's purpose and got me to try a new resturant. I was really happy with the burger of the week that had fried onions, pimento cheese and tomato jam. Perfect new neighborhood spot! Stopped in during college football on a Saturday and there were plenty of places to grab a seat. Lots of tall booths, which always helps with volume/privacy, tall bar tables in the center, and seats at the bar. All of the TV's were in clear eyeshot, so there really isn't a bad seat in the house. Bonus: they have darts! The drink selection was pretty decent, but I was a little frustrated it took them so long to tap the keg for the beer I wanted - they wound up asking me to pick a different beer. The food menu is just about the right size, enough options to keep you coming back, but limited enough that you know service will be speedy. My boyfriend and I got the chicken tenders, fries, and wings. Everything was so tasty! The only thing I didn't care for surprisingly was their ranch. The Pony is a traditional bar on Main Street. One might think to drop by for just a drink, but you would be missing out. The food here is great. The chicken strips were definitely hand breaded. The sauces are also homemade, and delicious. I had the garlic and ginger sauce, and the blue cheese dressing with my chicken strips. The sauce was great, but the blue cheese dressing was the best I have ever had. I also recommend to add the hand cut French fries. I am definitely going back. read more

Count me in! I'm excited about this addition to the OTR family. This place has character -- I feel like the building has a great history. I envision generations before us "bellying up" to the bar to pass stories with a hospitable bartender. I like the feel of this place. Warm and inviting. However, I will comment that the bartender we had was the opposite. (I'm not factoring her into my rating - I'll give her the benefit of the doubt and assume she just had a bad day.) I ordered the fried bologna sandwich which was really delicious. Three thick slices of bologna (could've been fried a little more), stacked with mustard, cheese and caramelized onions. Unfortunately, the meat slid right out of the bun on the first bite. But I powered through. For a drink, I tried the Old Work Horse which was made with bourbon, ginger/maple simple syrup, lemon bitters. It was really tasty. I watched the bartender make their other house specialty, Pony Express. And while I didn't try the purple concoction, it piqued my interest enough to try it on a return trip. read more
