I have never been to this part of downtown which would explain why I had never eaten at the Pit Bbq before. It's not a very big "place". The front is barely big enough for an entrance. When I drove by at 10am on a weekday and saw a line of at least 7 cars snaking through their drive-thru, I knew this place had to be worth a look! The Pit has been at this location for about 38 years! There's no seating inside, but you can enter and place and pickup orders. If you call in an order, you must come inside and cannot pick it up through the drive-thru. Their menu is nailed to the wall where you speak into a speaker to place your order. Then you drive around to the pickup/pay window. There's always 2 lines for prices. Cash and Card. So there's a discount if you pay with cash. They are only open for breakfast and lunch until 2pm. The have a standard breakfast which includes plates and omelettes cooked with every combination of egg, cheese, sausage, bologna, sausage or ham. Their lunch menu includes sandwiches and plates. They have two desserts: pecan pie and fried apple pie. Sides are crinkle fries, slaw and baked beans. So not an extensive menu, but comprehensive. Honestly I had wanted to try a breakfast item, but it was past 10am so I opted for the two meat combo of smoked sausage and bbq pork with slaw and baked beans. I also two toasted and buttered sides of a hamburger bun. I got 2 links of sausage with the link being about 4 inches long. Each link was sliced right down the middle so it looked like I had 4 pieces of sausage. The sausage were delicious. When they say their bbq pork is shredded, they mean it. I really liked how all the pork is shredded and there's no random large chunks. That's just me. Others probably prefer chunks. The shredded pork was tender, but the kicker is of course the sauce. I'm not a bbq connoisseur, but I liked their sauce. It was thick, dark, had a wonderful smoky, sweet and tart! Yom Yom Yom Yom. The baked beans was on point and I can easily tell their slaw was made that yesterday if not that morning. They make a mayo based slaw which I prefer and it was outstanding! Chilled just right! Yom Yom Yom Yom. The 2 toasted sides of hamburger buns were kinda corny but acceptable. I would've preferred 2 regular slices of white bread. The Pit is a typical hole in the wall that knows how to serve good ole southern comfort food. In 38 years they have figured out what works for them and their fans (who probably eat there at least once a week) and they stick to it. I was excited to try this place after hearing good things, but unfortunately the customer service left a lot to be desired. As a first-time visitor, the ordering process was confusing. There was a long line wrapped around the building, a large menu with a lot of options, and the "Place Order Here" sign was easy to miss from where I was positioned in line. Instead of politely helping or giving directions, the staff member I encountered was dismissive and rude when I asked for clarification. I completely understand that busy restaurants can get hectic, but a little patience and courtesy go a long way. A more welcoming attitude toward customers, especially first-time visitors, would make for a much better experience. read more

Got the burger last time. I'd definitely do the barbecue over the burger in the future! The barbecue pork sandwich was great! Great crinkle cut fries. Asked about the loaded fries. She said they come with barbecue pork, shredded cheese bacon - recommended adding jalapeños and ranch too. Sounds good. Might try those next time! read more

I can remember coming here when I was younger. My auntie loved this place! After many , many years this establishment came up in a recent conversation so I decided to have lunch here. Surprisingly when I arrived a little after 12 pm, there were a few people in the drive thru. The inside was closed. I placed two orders not from the lunch menu. Their prices are insanely cheap in my opinion! I ordered the rib tip plate which their plates all come with coleslaw , baked beans and fries. I ordered a pork plate too. Both plates came with a good amount of food! The one drawback for me was that I immediately got a headache after eating this pork! It had a really good smoked flavor though . Also, they put a bit too much sauce on the rib tips. The bbq sauce was tasty but just more than I prefer. The coleslaw also had way too much mayo in it. YUCK! The fries and baked beans were perfect! I love a good hole in the wall and this certainly is a hole in the wall. I will definitely come here again to try more menu items but I'm staying away from the rib tips. We did not get along! Let me start off by saying the breakfast sandwich is amazing. I love their breakfast. That being said it took 35 min in the drive though and it was not busy. It Makes no sense why it should take that long. If the drive though moved quicker it would be an option for more people. Serve time is the only complaint I have heard from others. read more

My coworker here in Birmingham took me there for breakfast and I got the breakfast bowl and it had the best smooth, creamy grits, egg and sausage in it, along with an hash brown. OMG !! Then come to find out I went to school with owner, and my siblings went to school with the some of the younger workers and siblings. It was great seeing them all. We had The Pit BBQ in Calera, AL years ago, which was owned by their father but the kids worked there as well. That is a place we dearly miss in Calera. We've gotten this a few times at work. It's a small place - blink and you'll miss it. Being so small, it doesn't have a ton of options, but there are enough to try different items. Everything is ordered a la carte. The bbq beef has good flavor. Pork is decent, but nothing to write home about. The sauce is great. I would recommend their loaded fries. It comes with bbq sauce, pork, cheese, and bacon, and can be a side for multiple people, easily. I haven't had a chance to try their breakfast sandwiches, which my coworkers say are better than their lunch. Will have to remedy that soon! They do have a drive through, but its a very small/short space for it, so sometimes people have to wait in the turn lane before turning into the actual drive through lane. Rude, overpriced, and not that good. Decided to take a chance by trying out something near home. I'm in no way a BBQ concierge of any kind, but I know the bare minimum to know that a pork plate, apple pie, and lemonade shouldn't cost $20. Pork plate tasted pretty dry, and I felt like didn't give you much for the price. The bread for the sandwich tasted stale and should have at least been buttered beforehand. Meanwhile the Apple Pie given to me was stone cold and I'm pretty positive they didn't fry it for me. I'd hope at least the fries would be great, but it tasted of pre-cut frozen fries. The no takeout bag given to me incredibly pissed me off because i basically had to just hold everything and try to not get sauce spilled in my car. I wish to say the saving grace was the service, but not really. I understand everyone was busy but to not give me a bag, give me a frozen pie, and to just act a little rude, makes me not want to come back at all. Idk if this all stemmed from me just "not fitting" with the regular clientele, but I'll make sure to never come back. Where to start! I will preface this review saying that I am not from this area and I travel a lot for work. I love trying new places upon local's recommendations. first, plate is deceptive. it looks phenomenal. I was very disappointed when I started eating. I got the two meat plate with smoked sausage and riblets with fries and beans. The Beans were a bit too sweet for me and couldve been seasoned a bit better, but were good. The fries were inconsistent, some were crisp and delicious and others were soggy and limp. also could've used a bit of salt. the smoked sausage didn't seem to have the smoked flavor and the snap that accompanies a good sausage. there was very heavy spice on the back end that was almost off putting. the riblets were extremely dry and unappetizing. even with the sauce, it was like eating jerky with bones in it. the sauce was extremely heavy on the vinegar, much heavier than other regional competitors. the tea was amazing. I am a bit confused on the price though. the menu showed the two meat combo at 18 and change and an iced tea at 1.80 but I paid 24.73. I'm not sure how the extra four dollars showed up. All in all. 25 bucks for what I received in portion size was great. The meal just lacked in the quality area. These opinions are strictly mine and I do not discourage anyone from trying this place. The Pit is located over in Northside in the industrial district. As I said, there's not a dining room. Just a narrow drive thru and standing only room in front of the counter. Stop in, put in your order and watch as they work their magic on the flat top. Stop by in the morning and they already have the pit fired up, cooking the meat for that day. It's just good, slightly sloppy diner food served with a smile. They have hours that fit a trucker or blue collar schedule so it's difficult to catch them while their open. But if you can, you're in for a treat! My partner LOVES the bologna lettuce and tomato with a fried egg but I love just about any of their breakfast sandwiches. Save some time and call the order in! Best breakfast in Birmingham. My choice is an Egg and cheese on a bun with mayo and a pickle. Add to that another with a piece of ham. This has been my choice since they opened. Store is always clean all the way out to the street. Service is great. The line at lunchtime moves along at a quick pace. Plenty of on street parking in this industrial area of town. The staff is super friendly. The ladies have grown up there. The food is consistently excellent there from visit to visit. The barbecue is tender and flavorful. I lucked up on this gold mine this morning! I had to take the fiancé to work this morning. I missed my turn to the interstate & saw this little red building with a pig on the window!!! LOOK HOW GOOD GOD IS! Lol The guy at the order window was VERY pleasant!! I think he knew I was new! The menu is expansive! The food was REALLY good! I got the fried Bologna, egg, & cheese sandwich & found a little piece of heaven! If you are on a diet or eating healthy I don't know if this is the place for you but when you have a cheat day...... This place has good food; but their customer service is THE PITs. They use to get ALL orders correct until the current girl came to the window. I had to tell them my order TWICE and they STILL got it wrong. They forgot to add an item. I called and told them that they didn't add my item. Then I said I was coming back to get it. They said ok. Understand that I NEVER go into ANYTHING with an attitude. I don't get loud or unruly, or anything because it solves NOTHING. I approach everything calmly and pleasantly. I expected them to give me the item I ordered TWICE. They said they forgot to charge me for it. I understand that, but that wasn't a mistake on MY behalf-especially when I told them TWICE. When I went back to let them correct THEIR mistake, the manager got really rude with me and said, "We're not going to just give you something free because WE made a mistake." I said, "Ok. This is an experience you shouldn't miss in Bham. A tiny bbq joint with a drive through, catering to a carry out crowd. We grabbed some bbq and headed to the nearest brewery.
