I always give the benefit of the doubt when I have a bad experience at a restaurant, but I just want to give fair warning to anyone thinking of coming here with a similar situation to ours. We made a same-day reservation for 2 people at 9 PM on a Thursday. Our orders were taken within a few minutes of arriving. However, nobody poured us the glasses of wine we had ordered until we asked them to (about 10 minutes later). We then received bread and butter, and our appetizer (shared) arrived soon after. We were done with our appetizer by 9:30, at which point they took away our remaining bread as well. And then we waited...and waited...and waited. It was very warm in the dining room, so we started to get uncomfortable and asked for a glass of ice, which we kept putting into our water. We had been walking around all day and were very hungry, which probably added to our declining mood, but we did not receive our entrees until 10:30 PM. Not once within this foodless period did anyone ask us how we were doing, apologize for the long wait, or even acknowledge our existence. When we asked about the long wait, we were told that it was because a large group had ordered just before us. However, that barely excuses a 1-hour wait for two entrees without any apology. When our food arrived, it was simply average (my salmon was overcooked), and we just wanted to get out of the restaurant as soon as possible. The only redeeming part of this evening was that our wine was complimented and we received small desserts to-go as we rushed to leave. However, 5 minutes of kindness does not make up for an entire evening of bad service. I understand that circumstances can often be out of a server's control, but this situation could have been handled in a much better way, and we left feeling very frustrated with the entire experience. read more

Absolutely I'm a fan! This was such a great find, all thanks to Yelp. We decided to branch away from the plethora of carveries for a nice meal for at least one night in Dublin. And man am I lazy. My 'branch away' went like this: Search for (e.g. taco, cheap dinner, Max's) 'Irish' Near (Address, City, State or Zip) 'Dublin, Ireland' But it totally paid off! The Pig's Ear was superb, the food was quality and the service was stellar. It's definitely a cool little space, intimate enough for the intimate times and airy enough to not feel confined. While I could hear everything my neighbour tables were talking about (my guilty pleasure!), I was om-noming the food too intently to truly pay attention. Those desserts! I have a chocolate hangover from that tart! So why the minus-one-star? The price. The early-bird prices are fantastic but unfortunately we didn't make it in time. Our fault, I know, but there is a pretty big hike between. The Pig's Ear was a really fun dabble in a world I can't really afford right now, but unfortunately because of this one-time dabble I'm probably going to have to have cereal for my next 20 or 30 meals. read more

Of all the places on our Ireland trip, I was most looking forward to the dinner here. The food was good, but our server was massively unimpressive. We asked about an item on the menu and what she told us it was was sooooo wrong. We only know because later we googled it. For such a high dollar place you'd expect knowledgeable servers. I've walked by The Pig's Ear hundreds of times so It was nice to finally go in to eat. I was able to reserve a table for lunch. It took a few emails to get it booked, but they were accommodating and helped us get a table the week I wanted. The service was outstanding and the atmosphere was quite nice. Then food was good, really good, but I expected a bit more. I'm not sure if I'll go back, but it's worth a try if you're thinking of going. read more

Outstanding food with great mix of flavors and perfect portions, left feeling perfect, not too full and extremely satisfied. Not cheap but quite reasonable for the level of quality, good presentation, Tried the steak tartar, the cured salmon ap and ham knuckle. All very tasty, had the pork belly and was lucky to get a piece that was not too fatty, obviously had fair amount of fat and was warned it depends on the cut you get.. the sides of cabbage and onion were so good that I could have had those as a meal, Best meal I have had this year and I dine in nice places in Ann Arbor which is some what of a foodie town, Great spot for couples, but get a reservation as the table we got just walking in would have not been acceptable to my wife, was fine for me and my two male co workers though. This is one of those places where the menu sounds better than the food tastes. I started off with the whiskey-cured salmon. Sounds interesting right? Whatever the whiskey-curing process is, all it did was remove all the flavor from the salmon while leaving a slimy texture. Shepherd's pie made with minced lamb. Sounds good right? The potatoes on top looked cool, but were pretty bland, which wouldn't have been so bad if the minced lamb were rich and gamey as I had hoped, but it wasn't. I wasn't expecting culinary acrobatics from a shepherd's pie, but this version was just too bland for my taste. It's a nice atmosphere and I appreciate some of the risks they're taking on the menu, but the cuisine just didn't interest me very much. read more

Great food, great service and great atmosphere! When my wife and I discovered 'The Winding Stair' was closed for the holidays, we were pretty disappointed. The concierge at our hotel recommended we try The Pig's Ear and assured us a very similar experience. We easily found the neon pink door entrance to the restaurant and walked upstairs to the restaurant. It immediately struck me as one of the typical 'trendy' restaurants you'd see in LA/SF/NY. One large seating area and kitchen area off to the side. The wine list was spectacular, I immediately found a favourite grand cru burgundy from Gevrey Chambertin and thought it was a great price-point. When it arrived, it was noticeably corked. The sommelier certainly agreed with us and immediately brought another bottle which was fine. We noticed they were passing the first pour he had given us among the waitstaff to demonstrate what corked wine smelled like! I can't remember specifically what we had but pretty sure I had the pork shoulder and my wife most likely had the shepherd's pie. Everything was delicious. Fabulous, unpretentious service and certainly one of our favourites in Dublin. read more

I'll admit that when I think of Irish cuisine, my first exposure to which was through Dennis Leary's standup, I generally don't think of fine-dining. The Pig's Ear, despite the name that sounds more like a Chinese cold dish or a pub, manages to pull it off. A small upstairs restaurant with a view of Trinity College, it boasts modern interpretations of... meat. I opted for the three course prix-fixe (EUR27) as I arrived without a reservation around 5:45 (which apparently in Ireland is an ungodly hour to be having dinner as it was reasonably empty) and was informed I'd need to be out by 7:00 due to reservations which was not a problem. On the menu: - Hen's Egg: I'll be honest and admit that I never knew or paid much attention to what the egg was mixed with, but the combination worked. - Pork Belly: This "pork belly" was effectively a giant slab of bacon making that even at Peter Luger in the States look meager in comparison. The meat/fat ratio was about 65/35 which, while still too heavy for the health-conscious, was magically delicious. - Brown Bread ice cream with Carmelized Brown Bread: True to the Irish tradition of starch. I enjoyed this more than the 'homemade' ice cream at Murphy's nearby. My only minor quibble was that the carmelized bread was sticky and hard enough to be toffee-like which I wasn't expecting. Based on the current menu, if I returned I'd probably order the same things. Based on the prices I don't think I'd come for the full dinner -- even on an expense account it would be above my allowance -- but I'd definitely return again for the early bird that was worth eating at Dublin lunchtime to partake. read more

For some reason wedding dress shopping leaves me with quite a pronounced need for wine! So luckily after the day I also had another appointment with a different group of friend's for dinner at the pig's ear. Having snacked in between all the appointments I wasn't actually starving so I was happy enough to go for the 2 course for 18 euro early bird special. I put aside the food menu quickly enough and scrabbled for the wine list with less grace than was probably appropriate. I was disappointed that the absolute cheapest bottle of wine on the menu was 23 euro - which is probably fine, but I'm a student and 23 euro would buy many cans! Having ordered their finest, cheapest wine (why does no waiter laugh at that?!), I got the waitress to pour it without bothering to taste it (I was pretty sure when she didn't laugh at my ordering joke that she wasn't going to laugh at my 'yes it is wine, well done!' line for the post tasting - so what's the point!). Anyway a few sips calmed my wine lust and I could focus on the company and food. With the food I thought it was just as well I wasn't hungry because the portions seemed to be on the small side - I had beef and guinness sausage and mash - which was not amazing and then I had brown bread ice cream for dessert which was quite nice. While the food was grand I think they trade a bit too much on the kitsch irishness and the funky decor. I thought it was a bit pricey and I'm not really sure how they can justify charging 6 euro for the 10 penny mix themed dessert. However it was grand and the company was good, which always makes a night! read more

A nice mid-high end restaurant with a homely feel to it. When trying to find the Pig's Ear you'd be forgiven for walking past it once or twice. It's a very unassuming building slotted in between a group of more traditional restaurants and cafes. What makes it stands out is it's bright pink door - as well as it's wonderful food. I got the tartare to start which, having never tried it before, was surprisingly crunchy and flavourful. For the main, to fit with the restaurant's theme, I got the pork belly. This was surprisingly tender and not too fatty as is usually the problem with pork. While it is pricey, it's not nearly as expensive as some of its high end competitors. I'd wholeheartedly recommend The Pig's Ear for big occasions or romantic dates, it suits perfectly for both read more

World class cuisine in a cozy, casual, comfortable setting. this is exactly what i personally look for when i visit a new city - an innovative chef who uses local, seasonal ingredients to take traditional dishes to a whole new level. starters were terrific: smoked haddock brandade and crab mayonnaise - which was lightly citrusy and not at all heavy. Mains were similarly well-designed and perfectly executed (pork belly and the most amazing shepherds pie). All this paired quite well with a premier cru burgundy, and at a fair price. The food was very good, but there were things about the food and the service that took what should have been a 5 star meal down to a 2 star. There was too much crossover of ingredients between the dishes. For example, two of the dishes I had had capers, and another that I didn't have but was on the menu also had capers. Mustard seeds and pine nuts were also on several dishes. Although the dishes all tasted good, they just lacked inventiveness or at least differentiation. The worst part was that i was in the middle of my cheese dish and the waiter came to tell me that they needed my table, that people were waiting for it, but of course "take your time." I'm sorry but this was a fairly expensive meal, it was a few minutes before the start of the hour, and I was less than five minutes away from being finished. I'd also already paid. In the end, I left disappointed. And after the way it ended, I don't think I'll be back. read more

We had a nice team out in the pig ear. The service was very friendly and always around. We had the Christmas dinner which was very nice. I had the crab salad as a starter. It was very nice arranged but in my opinion a bit to lemonlike. As main course I had the beef cheek and tongue. Which was very tasty. For the main course I would recommend, not to serve dark meat on a black blade. After that it had the banana and glove. To be honest I expected some thing more special. I would suggest to serve this banana cream not directly out of the fridge. All in one the evening was nice. I would choose 3,5 stars because the rumors around this restaurant are a bit better than the performance at the moment. read more

I was able to call in and get a last minute table for two here on a Thursday night. We got the pea and goat cheese salad, tuna tartare, seared cod, beef cheek, and cheesecake. We also got 4 cocktails total and spent 125 euro. Everything was incredible! After dinner we tried to choose what our favorite item was and we couldn't decide since everything was so good. My wife and I had an excellent meal at the Pig's Ear while on vacation in Ireland. One recommendation; we were debating between 2 or 3 starters along with our 2 mains. We went with 3 and I was really glad we did. They were not too filling, but each very delicious. In particular I enjoyed the pork terrine with apples, which had a flavor combination I've not experienced much back home. My main was the beef rump with mashed potatoes. It was very delicious and again had a flavor combination that I was looking for on our trip. For desert we had a lemon curd, which my wife claimed was the best desert she's had this year. Be prepared to splash out if you're ordering al la carte. This place is pricey, but dammit the food is amazing. I had celeriac soup to start for €6.50, folowed by the most amazing slow cooked pork belly I've ever tasted, with mashed potatoes and black pudding. My only complaint was that the portion was too small, for €23.50. I could've eaten two of them. Tasted some of my friend's steak though. It was significantly bigger, as well as being cooked and seasoned to perfection. Having plently of room left for dessert, I opted for the cheesecake. This came deconstructed in a jam jar; a layer of berry compote on the bottom, thick, lushous vanilla cream cheese on top, with a sprinkling of crushed Hob Nob biscuits. It was so good, I will confess, I fingered the jar afterwards like a famished racoon stock-piling for winter. The coffee was also quality. Including 2 glasses of the delicious house white, the bill, between 8 of us rounded up to about €60 per head. Perhaps next time I will avail of the early-bird offer of two courses for €15! read more

The means by which you cross the threshold into The Pig's Ear as well as the brave design decisions taken within the dining room are reminiscent of Dublin's other prevailing and popular eatery, The Winding Stair. I can't work out whether The Winding Stair's location on the northern region of the city in comparison to The Pig's Ear's southern setting makes them seem, even geography-wise, competitors or sister bistros. Hopefully the answer will lie within the premises. The fuchsia pink door stands out like a ray of light in the midst of the more cheerless shop and restaurant exteriors on Nassau Street. This intriguing mode of entry really roused my interest. Upon sitting at my table I was charmed by the sporadic splashes of fuchsia in a milieu otherwise populated by dark mahogany. Fuchsia-coloured menus, flowers and even a fuchsia rim around where the numbers flash up on the cash register left me subtly captivated. Each table featured one or two random items, often pig-related to generate a nice n' tenuous cohesion with the restaurant's name. Airtight glass sweet jars on the counter with pink and white chocolate mice and custard creams, pink steel watering cans, a traditional hat and coat mahogany stand, together with books for the more unconventional reader standing up by the counter such as the Phaidon publication 'Pork & Sons' with a light pink and white chequered covering akin to a delicate table cloth all work to further accentuate that already existing daintiness. On our table there was a white ceramic piggy bank and magnifying glass, whilst on another there was a travel sized old-fashioned dustpan and brush made from tin with oak handles. The unadorned clear glassware beautifully compliments the persnickety bric-a-brac and strips it down enough so that the knick-knacks never appear to overly embellish the interior. Having opted for the two-course lunch menu for €15.95, I enjoyed a Warm Salad of Clonakilty Black Pudding, Potato, Broad Beans & Hazelnuts followed by a succulent Old Fashioned Pork and Barley Meatballs, Mashed Potato and Buttered Carrots for mains. This is tender Irish cuisine with a contemporary twist without compromising any of the time-honoured simplicity people have come to love about them. The answer to the original question as to whether The Winding Stair and The Pig's Ear are rivals or more adjoining siblings is that they are neither. Yes there are similarities; the surreptitious door from the main street that takes you to the dining room smaller in size than initially anticipated, the ascending of the interior set of stairs to the dining room, the identifiable nature of the dishes that the restaurant serves in terms of traditional Irish cuisine with an unusual twist, a mixture of convention vs. idiosyncrasy that both restaurants endeavour to accomplish and contemporary dark mahogany furniture in the company of old fashioned knick-knacks, but at the core of both of their surroundings The Pig's Ear exudes something more engaging and a better cohesion exists between interior furnishings and cuisine than The Winding Stair where the design decisions fail to point towards excellence in food, nor any kind of distinction on the restaurant's part. read more

Recently booked here for a friends birthday (I have always heard its the sort of place one books in advance,and friends make the very best guinea pigs to test out food with!). I must say all and all I had a very pleasant experience here, it was early in the evening and admittedly I had great company, but the atmosphere was very convivial. We ordered off the set menu, which for a restaurant with a reputation for being expensive is very well priced (the lower side of the 20/30 mark). The food is tasty as hell, though I will say portion wise-and for an Irish person-its not that big, but youll live!! Good wine, even the cheap stuff. The staff were the perfect balance of friendly and professional and knew when to leave you alone!! It is a pleasant building, set over several floors-which is a plus and a minus-fabulous in one sense as you really could end up having a room to yourself if you were a tolerably large party, but if you have associates with various limb ailments be prepared. The only active criticism I would have is we were sat next to the window on an upper floor-mind, which has lovely view of the cricket pitch in trinity- but there was a very great proliferation of flies. Admittedly Dublin has been lousy with flies since the opening of the incinerator (no connection I'm sure!) and it was the end of summer, but it is the main reason these chappies have lost a star in my review, though I am sure it is not always that way. Hands down the best meal I have had in Ireland. We had three courses, all of which were exceptional. If you are looking for an Irish meal I would definitely recommend coming here. The menu was mouthwatering and full of unique ingredients, and thankfully nothing was overdone. The ox tongue melted in your mouth and the salmon was beautifully cooked. So happy I found this place upon doing some research on restaurants in Dublin. I made a reservation through email a week or so ahead of time, and for a Saturday night, I think this was a good call. The restaurant was pretty crowded when we arrived, but we were seated promptly. (As a side note, the check-in process is a little weird; there is no host desk, but we were able to get the attention of a staff member who quickly checked the reservation list and then seated us). The two-course option was over by the time we got there, so we ordered off the a la carte menu. I enjoyed the Summer Squash Soup as a starter (seriously SO good) and then the Slow Cooked Lough Erne Sheperd's Pie pie as my main course, which was equally delicious, while my fiancé had the Pig Belly and really liked that as well. I had been planning to try out one of their desserts, but I couldn't even finish my shepherd's pie--I was so full! Highly recommend! We came here at 5:30, right at the opening, as we didn't have a reservation and were able to dine as long as we cleared the table by 7pm. That's didn't bother us as we had a show to catch, and the service didn't feel rushed. All the dishes were delicious. The Irish butter and bread as a started were so yummy. We had literally every appetizer on the menu except the ham, and loved them all. If I had to skip one, I'd skip the mozzarella cheese. For main we had cod, which was very good. To be honest, I wasn't that impressed with The Pig's Ear on the night I visited. Perhaps they had all got out of the bed the wrong way or something. The waiter was sullen, the boss was moreso, until I ordered and then he seemed to perk up a bit. The waitress had a dig at the waiter for being rude to some people who came in after me, and they all seemed stressed. He was rude too! My pet hate: A waiter/waitress asking your opinion on the food, but not waiting for an answer or looking you in the eye. Grrrrr! This happened with said waiter. The waitress however was able to smile and I was happy with her. The food weas incredibly over priced for what it was. I had a smoked haddock starter and it came the size of an upyurned egg cup. I could have got the whole thing in my mouth, with the garnish, all at once! Now, if the flavours had been spectacular, all well and good, but they werent. I have had better many times. The main was a Donald Russell steak. I have bought direct from DR nefore and was very impressed with the quality of meat, so I thought it was a safe bet. It was excellent, but the accompanying vegetables have been forgotten about since i was there (2 weeks). I wish now that I had gone a little further around the corner onto Grafton Street as there are many more places to choose from. read more

The smoked salmon, Jerusalem artichoke, and Irish beef carpaccio starters were an excellent prelude to the main course dishes of roast cod, shepherd's pie, and pork belly that we shared. Love the Pig's Ear - the food is consistently good every time I go and the desserts always blow me away. Had the shepherd's pie again this time and it was just as good as last. Others at my table had the roast chicken, the pork belly and the salmon - and all were very popular. The desserts - we had four to share because we could not choose! - were all divine. I agree with other reviewers that the brown bread ice cream was excellent (sadly they would not share the recipe with me) and the cheesecake in a jam jar was as delicious as last time. We also liked the marshmallow with red fruits and white chocolate oat clusters and the chocolate tart was warm and perfectly paired with the salted caramel ice cream. All in all a divine way to end the meal! This time the service was a little sporadic and I was unfortunately placed right by the door so my chair kept getting bumped and tripped over by staff and patrons - but it might be because I am pregnant and so can't quite pull my chair in as far as I would normally!! Anyway, was a minor issue and did not spoil a great evening. I look forward to returning for more of that cheesecake and that brown bread ice cream! read more

Nom nom nom! Went to the Pig's Ear for the early bird last night and it was fantastic! I had the cured salmon to start; nice pieces of salmon with mini prawns and pickled cucumber. Very tasty. The bread they gave us was lovely and fresh! Then I had the hake, which was super, served on lovely mash. And then! Then! Dessert! I had the trifle, which had to be the best-est part of my meal. Served in a jam jar, I was hoping that I would keep going and going but to no avail. The service was fantastic and I love the decor. So why only 4 stars? Well...the early bird menu was quite slim, not leaving me with a lot of choice. I don't eat pork and the veg option didn't appeal to me. Will definitely go back though. Maybe when I do, they'll change the EB menu. But keep the trifle! read more

The food was so good!! Very rich, seemed to have some French influence. If you go 5:30-6:30 there is an early bird special 3 courses for 25 euros or 2 course (without dessert) 21 euros. We went at 6pm an got right in :) we had to make a deal though with the waiter to be done by 7:30 :) because he had a reservation coming at that time. That was fine with us, I think normally you would need a reservation. I was just glad to get a table and a deal! We had the pork belly and risotto, the cheese cake was amazing!! It comes in a jar and isn't your typical New York cheesecake. I am pretty sure all the food is amazing. They have like 2-3 different levels of the same restaurant as far as seating goes and most tables have a good view of Trinity College. I would definitely return!. read more

Wonderful, daring recipes! I mean come on, beets in the risotto? It turns everything red. Who ever heard of that? The taste was AMAZING. I also had the crab salad starter ( recommend) . Then the pork belly. I feel like you almost have to dry pork out to cook it long enough to be healthy. They didn't escape that here, but they did a marvelous job at it with the sauce. It was really good. OK YOU MUST HAVE the Brown Bread Ice Cream. It has this great texture, plus they have this crumbled broken honeycomb sort of crispy stuff on top. WOW WOW WOW. I also recommend the Pinot by the glass. Perfect. Thank you pigs ear. Also I hope they don't mind me telling you this. We flew in and were late for our reservation. I called to let him know we would have to try for another night, and he said, " come on down. We'll keep the kitchen open for ya..." Nice people who went over the top to accommodate.
