First off... the staff are all young and attractive... every one could be a model of some sort. We walked in before they were open (we did not know), it was empty, they asked if we had reservations, we laughed and asked if we needed them waving around... they said only the bar was available, and we said "Perfect". AMAZING wine list, and super affordable by American standards. We picked a French Pinot, bread/oil, and the Delmonico steak for two. We slowly sipped the wonderfully fragrant Pinot, and nibbled slowly on the basic brown bread while we awaited the entree. Everyone at the six person bar was a regular, and was friendly and polite. The delmonico arrived just barely medium (how we ordered it) with wonderful garlic fried potatoes, and a balsamic salad on the plate (dandelion and arugula). The steak was not melt in your mouth... you wouldn't want it to be, it was delicious and requires your full attention to eat it. The bernaise sauce was OK on the potatoes, but on the Steak... it came alive. We'd never had anything like it. We BARELY finished the meal, and we passed on dessert... and the other four at the bar shook their heads in disbelief..."You're on Holiday, you MUST get their dessert!" We passed, but were so content with the staff, the food, and the customers we were completely happy. Five for five in our book.

A small, modern-vibe restaurant and wine bar hidden behind black-framed doors in the Merrion Row restaurant district. Only tall bar-side seating for one individual's reservation. Came in 30 minutes before my reservation and was offered the tall seating as expected. Environment: small and narrow interior, seats and tables are a bit small, need to put in some work to squeeze around, music and noise could be a bit loud. Service: friendly, reommended the oysters to me. But it took about 15-20 minutes after my oysters and the starter of croquettes till the main course was served. Raw: daily oyster from the west coast of Ireland. Small to medium size, rich and vibrant flavor of seaweed, briney mineral water, and egg white. Sauce was a bit too vinegary for me. Starter: hake and chorizo croquettes. Hot, crispy outside, hake flesh tasted wild and nutty, but seasoning a bit too salty. Went well with the house mayonnaise. Main Course: steamed halibut. Halibut steamed to perfection, sauce adding sweet and savory flavor to the filet. Mushrooms are a bit bland and redundant; wish seaweeds or samphire would be served. Over all: 4-4.5 stars. Solid place, maybe better for lunch than dinner since the place has relatively limited space.

I had the pleasure of eating at Etto on my recent trip to Dublin. It's a small unassuming restaurant with alot of personality. The restaurant was super busy, yet there was a reassuring calmness from the staff. Service was great, super-friendly, knowledgable and attentive. For dinner, I started with the Scallop crudo with radish, pomelo, buttermilk and horseradish. It was AMAZING! The flavors worked so well together and the scallop was so tender. (I just started daydreaming about the dish and wish I were back there right now to have another plate!) For my main I had the Aged Parmesan Ravioli with sweet corn, cep, calçot leek and roasted hazelnut pesto. Another amazing dish! At first I was concerned with the corn, as it had been charred and I was afraid it would overpower the dish, but it did not. It was the perfect blend of flavors and textures. And to finish my meal, I had the Whisky Caramel tart with milk ice cream. I thought I had just died and gone to heaven. What a great way to finish an incredible meal. I had some great recommendations and wine pairings with the meal, including a fabulous Vin Santo to go with the Caramel Tart. I highly recommend ETTO if you are in Dublin!

Great tasting food in a very tightly spaced European style Bistro! We were here as business travelers, a group of 5! I had the seafood dish, perfectly prepared Cod dish and elegantly presented. Others tried their steak for two! And we had a great service along the way. I'd recommend the place but again the biggest downside to me was the sitting arrangement as you had to squeeze your way in thru the tiny front door space. Made holding conversations tuff as well.

Great food Great service The smoked salmon starter was delicious as was my main of lamb rump. For me though the yeast panna cotta that came with strawberry, balsamic and basil was the star of the show!!! Small but well worth trying to get a table here

Cyndy's Bottom Line: Amazing delicious food. We stopped in for lunch and was amazed with the food. This is what we ate: The Worker's lunch - meatballs with polenta, and kale. Wonderful presentation. The meatballs were very tasty, moist and delicious. There is a saltiness and a sweetness from the raisins in the meatballs. Topped off with a charred lemon slice. Amazing flavors all come together with the creamy polenta and the kale. Absolutely delicious! Friendly service.

I don't remember last time I had such an amazing restaurant experience. Etto is a place I will definitely go back to. Soon. Everything was perfect. Starter, main course and desert. Even the coffee was well above average. Can't wait to be back!

Ate here for a big birthday dinner the other day. So, the place itself is gorgeous. Cosy, contemporary, nice art - it really achieves that perfect balance between not feeling too stuffy but still good enough for a nice celebration. We were given a set menu which was printed out and personalised to say happy birthday to the lady of the hour. The menu is beautifully put together, though we had to get a lot of it explained to us, with some terminology not being overly familiar! Kudos to our waitress though - she was lovely, super friendly and explained everything patiently and concisely. Everything we ate was of a high standard. I tasted the ox cheek which was the winner overall for me. I went for the cote de boeuf with my brother which was a bit of a disappointment if I'm honest. The meat should have been a lot more tender than it was - it was quite tough. If you compared it with the cote de boeuf in The Butcher Grill, you'd taste a difference. It came with crispy garlic potatoes though which stole the show - I could eat buckets of them if I was given them! So. Overall, I would definitely go back to Etto. The standard overall of food was great, the service was friendly and efficient and the atmosphere was relaxed. I'm sure my rating will improve even further when I do too.

Antipasto - alright but nothing exceptional.

Very cute small contemporary Italian just on Merrion Row. Went for their tasting menu (seemed like a good idea a regular Tuesday), which was reasonably priced at 35 Euro. We were sitting at the bar as their were no tables when we called the same day, which for us was just better since I enjoy seeing what is going on in the kitchen! The owner was working this evening, serving the food himself. He spoke very vividly about the menu and the wines, so we truly felt we were in great hands. Started with antipasto, which was olives, some prosciutto, some smoked dip. Nothing memorable, really. As a starter there was a cured salmon, gravlaks. Mmm mm mm. Not only was it beautiful, but it was nice and soft and fatty at the same time. For main came a lamb neck tender and soft just the way I love my lamb. We were in heaven. You just looked at the piece of meat and it just divided itself into pieces (now that was probably more of a feeling). When we were just too full to think, dessert came in. It was a mascarpone cream with dried plums. Not very sweet, just very nice and creamy. Very much my type of dessert, but for those that prefer very sweet stuff, I'd say this wouldn't have been pleasing. In conclusion, very lovely experience, both food wise and the ambience. The only thing I would have done that would have given this a 5 instead, is to remove that antipasto, lower the price slightly, and serve it as a three course menu. Regardless, I'll be back for that gravlaks and piece of lamb, for sure.

Courgette flower with goat cheese and honey

Wonderful meal here last weekend! We started with the courgette flower and the smoked mozzarella and tomato croquettes. The courgette dish was beautifully presented and was really light and tasty. The croquettes didn't look special but had great flavours. For our mains we had the grilled cod and the lamb. My cod was wonderfully seasoned and so delicious. J's lamb was some of the best we have had in Dublin. So juicy and tender. We also split a side of potatoes which were very nice. To top everything off we ordered the panna cotta as well as the chocolate pot. My panna cotta had a lovely texture and wasn't overly sweet. J's chocolate dish was so rich and really nice. Amazing food and excellent service at Etto. Will return!

There are reasons I know I'm getting old, aside from the fact that the birthdays just keep crashing…read morein likes waves. One is my failing sight after years of relying on my eyes and my eyes alone to read. Another perhaps less common garden variety is the internal meltdown I face when confronted with a lot of menu choice in restaurants. If you identify with the latter, you may wish to save yourself a lot of hassle and simply choose the set menu here. If not, be warned, the a la carte alternative is complex, and for your own sake don't arrive tired or emotional. This is a prime mental condition eating experience. Famed Dublin restauranteur Dylan McGrath is an ideas man. His restaurants are as much about concept as they are about food, and though I'm sure there's a big heart in there, the head rules. If you want proof, study the menu. Across the top are taste categories (bitter, salty, sweet, etc.). Down the left are dish categories. So you scale down, then across, to see what combination of taste and texture your dish offers. And there are lots of choices. And a huge variety of prices. But what's less clear is quantity. And I was hungry and wanted to know I'd get an oul dinner into me before that difficult hungry phase that reduces my brain to mush and makes me want to howl like a baby. The very friendly waitress reassured us that though the menu seems complex first time round, after you've done it once, it's a breeze. (That's how I cottoned on to the fact that the wait staff here have post docs in maths.) Full marks for trying though. No less than two members of staff talked us through things, and they really did their best - did I sense concern that people are having difficulty getting it? Whichever - in the end, it was all too much for me - cue set menu. So, to my relief, for forty euros, you can certainly expect to leave full, with sushi starters - ok, it's not called sushi, it's the long one with the piece of fish on top of the rice (though more wasabi, please) -,delicious miso with clams and those delicate long-stemmed mushrooms that definitely have a name, beef skewers with rice (too much rice already) and potato main, and desert. The food presentation is beautiful, served on marble slabs and in delicate ceramics, with a Japanese-influenced simplicity. I thought the restaurant was Japanese from the menu but see from the website there are Spanish and South American influences too - not very obvious to me but then again I flunked the menu test. The sushi that isn't sushi was yummy, especially the turbot which was a smoky hit of flavour, and the sea bass, with a smooth texture that melts on the tongue. The beef is served on a mini-BBQ which, like the mushrooms, has a proper name. (The only problem with this method of on-table serving is being smoked out of it by the table next door who's got too much fuel on the fire.) If you want your steak more than medium rare, just cook on. My steak was a slightly mixed experience being a bit fatty, though my partner didn't have the same issue. Desert was ginger panna cotta, with melon granita, which was light yet intense in flavour and delicious. We had tried to book Rustic Stone, the restaurant downstairs, but it was full and they suggested we try Taste. We didn't know it was Japanese-influenced and I think they took this on board upon seeing our menu-bafflement and offered a glass of wine on the house. Fair enough. If I returned I'd be armed with a more rested brain (like I'd give it a full day off beforehand, take it to the pictures, buy it flowers, tell it it was looking great) and I would square right up to that a la carte menu, look it in the eye and plainly demand to know its tofu options, the brute, and I wouldn't take no for an answer. The Japanese are masters of simplicity, so ultimately I agree if for different reasons that Taste is not a Japanese restaurant. But the food largely made up for it, the service was good, it's a relaxing place to eat, and if the head wins over the heart, there's no denying it's a decent head. If you don't believe me, just look in the window where its image hangs pride of place, presumably so you know who best to talk to if you need anything explained.

In expectation of my arrival in Dublin for a 17 day visit, my sister sent me Taste as a potential…read moredinner option while I was staying with her. Coincidentally, I had a hankering for sushi on the first night and so after snagging a reservation, off we went to Taste. The restaurant was located on the third floor of Rustic Stone. We were seated at the sushi bar for dinner. The bar itself was different from those that I've experienced in the US where the cooking area is lower so you have a view of what the chef is making; however, the bar seating at Taste was also way roomier than most in the US. My sister and I opted for the €60 omakase - I requested the umami miso and the duck broth, while my sister had the regular miso and the salmon broth - and added on some toro nigiri. We also ordered cocktails - the Eastern Promise and the Gin Garden - which were excellent. The meal was excellent! The nigiri combinations were sometimes surprising but they worked well. The quality of the fish was also very good. I loved the broth and cooking the duck breast myself - it was so rich and the flavours were deep and well-developed. For the "light dessert" they brought out three options: a cheesecake, a coconut ice cream, and a ginger flan. The cheesecake actually had this odd cheese (not cream cheese or ricotta) taste but my sister and I were obsessed. Minus one star for the service because although everyone was super super nice, it was slooooooow. Our meal took about 3 hours. Not that we minded but just be wary that you might be here awhile! However, the meal meal was excellent and my sister and I agreed that between us there was nothing on the menu that we wouldn't order.
