The molten hot cheese breaded in the lightest but yet perfect crunch to cheese ratio is what you will find. These bad boys are incredible alone. But then you notice this delightful little tin of honey dip. This is the nectar of the queen goddess herself. It is an incredible fresh tasting honey on the perfect ratio of cheese to crunch curd but then you get the slightest hint of spice at the end. Just enough for you to wonder "was that real?" So you dip another gift from the Holstein bovine "foster mother of the world" curd into the nectar of the queen and the spice intensifies. Other dishes at the table looked better than mine. I tasted someone's Blue Gill fish, it was really good. Their cheese curds were also light and flavorful. Best of all was the service. We stopped here after reading reviews and we are always trying local non-chain eateries. I had the carnitas tacos with a mild poblano crema that was just this side of how much heat I can tolerate. ( I am a wimp). Husband had the pickled Loon burger; he enjoyed the pretzel bun but said the burger itself was no better or worse than others he's had. The tacos I had were very tasty, (loved the fresh cilantro as filling instead of romaine/lettuce) but all that comes on the lunch order is two smallish tacos for $8.00. This is probably our favorite place in Saint Cloud for lunch or dinner. You need to try an appetizer (the fried pickles or cheese curds are a favorite)! The batter is light and crispy and amazing. The regular menu is also great, we've been happy with everything we have ordered. First time to the Pickeled Loon. The friends I went with have been there many times. Most of the food is not the normal food you'd see at a restaurant. I did, however, pick the normal Black Pepper Steak. It was so yummy! It came with a side salad, fingerling potatoes and some cooked cherry tomatoes. It was cooked exactly liked I liked it. I ate everything! My friends liked their food, too, but I don't remember what they ordered. We were all very full. My only negative was how long we waited for the server to order our food and to get our bill. I would be very happy to return! read more

Great service and amazing food. Really enjoy the beers they have on tap and they are always updating and have new things to try. They have a nice space downstairs for eating and a small space for acoustic musicians. Upstairs they have a great space for dancing and larger bands. There is also a bar upstairs so you don't have to go up and down the stairs during the shows. Great outdoor seating, great service, great drinks, great food! Passing through St. Cloud on our way to Black Duck. We had the strawberry grapefruit fizz, the raspberry peach lemonade, and the smoked peanut butter old fashioned. All very tasty! Meals were all delicious! The service was good. The beer was good. Unfortunately our meals were only mediocre to ok. It was a hot, steamy midsummer afternoon and we were looking for a cool place to grab a bite and liquid refreshment. The Pickled Loon fit the bill sensationally on all accounts. The dimly-lit, air-conditioned classic bar was a welcome relief to the sun's glare and the excellent drink selection aided immensely. We started with some seasoned chips and side salads not expecting much, but were soon raving about how delicious both were. One doesn't often comment about how perfect a side salad is, but these were and it was just the appetizer. The nearly perfect shrimp tacos arrived soon afterwards and they were truly magnificent, perhaps the best we've ever had. I was incredibly shocked by the food here. I expected normal bar food but I was blown away by their menu. Most things are made from scratch and they have a wide selection of vegetarian items to choose from which is super rare to find at bars. They also have a wide variety of items on their menu from burgers and fries to speciality dishes like pad Thai. We stopped here for lunch on a Sunday afternoon around 1:30 which I thought would be after the lunch rush. There were maybe 4 tables full plus our table eating with a few guys at the bar. The waitress took our drink (pop and water) and appetizer order pretty promptly. We got our drinks right away and the rest of our dining experience headed south. We ordered two appetizers; cheese curds and fried pickles. After 40 minutes the waitress came over and told us they should be right up as the cook was getting caught up. We waited another 15 minutes for the apps. When they were delivered the waitress again told us our order should be there soon as the cook was just starting to make it. The curds were good as far as flavor but they were clumped together and had a weird maple syrup dipping sauce. The fried pickles also came in spears which made for a weird texture. The dipping sauce was good. We ate it because we were hungry after waiting nearly an hour for these two simple deep fried apps. After another 20 minutes or so, the waitress brought the first of our 5 dishes, fried avocado tacos. The dish was nothing special to look at except the brown and rotted lettuce kinda stuck out. The rest of the food was delivered and the waitress was going to whiz away and I had to call her back to take the plate back. She offered for another to be made, I declined thinking it would be a challenge to get something fresh and may take another hour. I asked to see the menu to find something that could be made quickly. I chose the fresh pineapple gauc and homemade chips. It was quick, flavorless, chips were stale. Took a few bites and decided to call it quits. The rest of the family ate their food with little complaint but no raving that it was so good either. As we were getting ready to leave, I went to the bathroom. Mistake! Not only was it dirty with this trash can that looked like it had been pulled out of the dump, I had to pass by the kitchen which was atrocious. I'm just going to say the kitchen would be comparable to some of the kitchens on the television show Hell's Kitchen BEFORE Chef Ramsey cleans them up. DISGUSTING! When we got the check the waitress was kind enough not to charge me for the tacos-good thing as I didn't even take a bite and also didn't charge me for the gauc-also good since I only took a couple bites. Normally when I have an experience similar to this I simply take the restaurant off my list of places I will patronize. This is experience was so bad, probably the second worst, I had to say something to the waitress. The waitress apologized and made an excuse that this is a night time business and they were still trying to get caught up and then walked away. My late mother in law was a wise woman. She always said to go to the bathroom first as that is a true gauge of the cleanliness of the establishment. I should have followed her advice as we probably would have found somewhere else to eat. read more

Friends had never seen me refuse to eat a meal and asked to try it and said the same thing. I never send stuff back so I just simmered in my own frustration and bewilderment. The Pickled Loon is changing the game for standard bar food. The food here is wildly creative and different without being off putting to those that prefer simplicity. When it comes to burgers, and bar food in general, I'm a meat and cheese kind of guy. I like classic, but this is the one exception I will eat again and again. The burger I had was topped with candy bacon and other artisan goodness. The food is fun and clever, and if the menu looks a bit intimidating talk to a server, they're very helpful and are more than willing to craft something within your comfort zone. The parking is not ideal so this locale is best for an afternoon break from shopping in downtown Saint Cloud. Thought "ok, they maybe just need a couple minutes to get things ready to open." Waited in the car for 10 minutes, saw a guy mopping. Figured they may have the door open at this point. Walked up again, door still locked, guy inside mopping 2 feet from the door. Didn't acknowledge us standing at the door, not a "give me one sec," nothing. Just rude. Hit the white horse instead. Extremely disappointed. Also, I tried to look past the dirty kitchen you could see when going to the bathroom and would have forgotten if the food was good. It needs to be cleaned up. I love this place. I'm super picky and hard to please (admittedly) and I don't give 5 star ratings often, but I just LOVE this place. Whenever my partner asks where I want to go in St. Cloud, I answer 'The Pickled Loon' because I am head over heels for their Nest Burger and the Beet Falafel--I'm a selective omnivore but always order vegetarian here because it's just SO delicious! I have to admit, after going to the Pickled Loon for the first time yesterday, it made it onto my list of "favorites" in St. Cloud! I have lived in St. Cloud for most of my life, but this was my first visit to the restaurant/bar. My boyfriend and I decided to stop by after I got off work. The Pickled Loon has that rad "downtown" feel. It's located on Germain, so just a tip: It's much better to go on the weekends when parking is free. Otherwise, parking may be difficult to find and you'll have to pay some money to park in the meter spots. We went there around 4:00pm, and there were a good amount of customers there. We walked in and figured out ourselves that you seat yourself right away, and we chose the table right next to the front window. The waiter/bartender greeted us with menus right away. Here comes the breakdown: 1. Food: 5/5 Oh my lanta...I think I went to heaven while there. I ordered the Al Pastor tacos which were a little spendy at $13 and my boyfriend bought the Reuben sandwich with tater tots. For an appetizer, we decided on the cheese curds (I saw pictures on Yelp and couldn't pass it up). In the drink department, I chose the Chocolate Sundae Martini while my boyfriend chose a Stella (there's not too many beers on tap, so it wasn't a hard pick). The waiter promptly brought out our drinks and I was in love with mine. My boyfriend took a sip of mine and liked it as well. It's not overwhelmingly sweet, and packs a little punch that wasn't too boozy. I could've had 4 or 5 of them I swear. It was like a mini dessert before our meal. The cheese curds came out next and boy oh boy these were a delight in my mouth. The crisp to the shell of each cheese ball was different than any other cheese curds I've had before. It was a light crisp that wasn't soaked in oil. The best cheese curds I have ever had. The quirky thing about them was that they came with a cup of maple syrup. I personally have never heard of this concept before, but my boyfriend gave it a try and he said quote: "They're not half bad." I am not a big fan of sweets, so I ate the cheese curds plain, but he kept dunking them in the syrup, so it clearly grew on him. The tacos were perfection. The pork was cooked well- the outside was a dark brown color, but the meat was pure white. I enjoyed the crunch and the flavor of each piece of pork. The cilantro on top and the pineapple guac are the bomb. The guac had a fresh and slightly tangy flavor, so I enjoyed the pineapple. My boyfriend said the reuben was made with corned beef and blaukraut (instead of sauerkraut), what he thinks was sourdough bread, and swiss cheese. He said it was really good! He has had better reuben's with saukerkraut, but this was his first sandwich with blaukraut and it was superb. He chose tater tots for his side, but there are several options for sides. The tots were awesome! Just how tots should be prepared. Nice and golden. 2. Service: 5/5 Our waiter did not tell us his name, but this nameless man was great. He was quick, courteous, and straight to the point. He seemed like a "git er done" kind of guy and wasn't annoying or in your face. He stopped by to ask us how the food was and asked us if we'd like more drinks. He knew how to do his job, and was also the bartender behind the bar when he wasn't assisting us. 3. Environment/Ambiance: 3/5 Like I said before, The Pickled Loon has a total "downtown" feel. The walls are aged brick and there are 4 flat screen TVs to watch sports channels. The bar stretches the entire length of the place and the tables to dine at are all high tops. During the time we came, it wasn't very loud and we could have a nice conversation without shouting at each other. The bathroom was located in the back and my boyfriend told me to give the bathroom an "F" rating on Yelp. I told him I usually use number of stars, but that I would include the "F" grading at his request. He said the bathrooms were obviously old, but not in prime condition. Enter at your own risk. Based on what he said, I would recommend going elsewhere or just waiting until you get to the comfort of your own home. The environment was average, but I give the Pickled Loon 5/5 stars overall.
