The name of this place made me want to go here for lunch. We drove over for the afternoon with my brother and his girlfriend and I chose a place to have lunch. It seems to be a popular place and only one table was left near the door. It was a bit chilly with the people going in and out but the service and food made up for it. We started with the cheese curds which were very good dipped in their honey sauce. My brother and his girlfriend each had a burger and they shared so they could try each one. One was the picked loon and the other was the special for the day. They said both were good. They also liked the fries and tator tots. I got honey mustard chicken salad which was big. My girlfriend and I have been wanting to get out on the bike and ride to Saint Cloud and have dinner since it's over an hour ride for me. So we rode up to come eat for dinner since they open at 4 p.m. We arrived in St Cloud an hour later so while we waited we decided to do a little shopping and came back after 4 pm. So we arrived back at 5 minutes after 4 and they were open. We parked and went inside and we were greeted by Veronica, she greeted us with a smile and asked us what we wanted to drink. Took our drink orders and asked if we wanted apps and we told her we were ready to order. So my girlfriend ordered the roasted turkey poutine nothing special but not bad nonetheless. And I ordered the walleye tacos with a side order of shrimp. The walleye and shrimp were cooked perfectly, however the slaw in my opinion didn't marry well with the walleye. The sauce that came on the walleye was really good, and the shrimp were wonderful. I met the other gentleman working there named JP who was friendly and helpful. What can I say?! I make it a point to stop at The Pickled Loon every time I am in St Cloud. Not only my favorite restaurant in the area but arguably my favorite in MN. When dive bar meets finer dining. You wouldn't expect much upon arrival of the list low lit rail bar with a few dining tables but when you get the menu and start seeing dishes go by you know you have stumbled upon greatness. After many visits I have tackled most of the menu. In this review I will highlight my last visit. I started with a chicken fajita soup that came on a small bed of rice in the cup. The chicken was perfectly cooked and just fell apart in my mouth. The rice with a nice tough giving it some added texture. Next I had their Shrimp Burger with "Hand pattied shrimp burger topped with: house made cilantro slaw, avocado, lettuce, and roasted garlic aioli. Served on a pretzel bun." While I was skeptical at first I remember that this place has never disappointed and went with it! GOOD FREAKIN CALL! This "burger" was amazing. The shrimp patty was like a delicate crab (or shrimp) cake and the cilantro slaw added a fantastic crunch and acidity balancing the sweetness from the shrimp as well as giving it a little crunch. Throw in avocado and a pretzel bun and you've died and gone to food heaven. Also pictured in this review is the Tennessee Hot Chicken Sandwich. This sandwich had a nice creamy chipotle slaw giving it an excellent smoky flavor along with their Baka white BBQ sauce all on an egg bun. While the slaw and the BBQ sauce gave it a flavorful bite this sandwich wasn't "Tennessee Hot" but I appreciate their spin on it and would recommend to anyone seeking a good chicken sandwich. Don't forget that this place is a BAR. They offer up a small but carefully selected menu of craft tap beers that pair perfect with the food. They also infuse vodkas with a variety of things to make excellent cocktails. I've been told the Bloody Mary is amazing and will be back to try it. I have had the smoked old fashioned with Makers Mark and peanut butter which is amazing. The smoke really brings out the peanut butter and gives the drink a smooth finish. I have also had the Pickle Martini. Yes, PICKLE MARTINI, made with house infused pickle vodka and garnish with, you guessed it, a pickle! I have also had the Pad Thai, Chicken Egg Rolls, Roasted Turkey Poutine, and Looney Mac & Cheese on previous visits. All incredible. It really doesn't get much better than this folks! The past couple times we have been there haven't been great and it's one of our favorite places to go. We were just there this past weekend and it took well over 1 hour to get food. My food was burnt and not edible and my husband didn't even receive his because they gave it to someone else. After waiting that long, we just decided to leave. This place was incredible! A friend recommended it and the reviews were right on. The service was exceptional with wait staff very friendly and helpful. I decided on the Pickled Loon burger but wanted to try the cheese curd because I heard they were amazing. The waitress allow the substitution! The food preparation was fast. Under 15 minutes which was good because the place was pretty busy. We ordered some appetizers which came out in about 5 minutes. FRIED BRUSSEL SPROUTS were very tasty and I HATE Brussel sprouts! These were made with their legendary honey, loon juice and maple syrup sauce. Incredible! If I could make them like that I would certainly eat them way more! Speaking of the honey, loon juice and maple syrup sauce...it comes with the curds as well. Great taste! We also had the WONTON CHEESE STICKS which were an interesting variation to the normal cheese stick! Order them all! The burger had great flavor. This place has always been a favorite of mine since moving to St. Cloud from Oregon. Every time I come I try to get some thing different, but end up going back to my favorites. But in all honesty I haven't found anything on the menu I don't like. Including drinks. Service does seem to sway depending on who is working. I went here on Saturday and sat outside. You seat yourself. There is an extensive number of beers on tap. Our waiter told us them all but I wish we were given a menu! We opted for the Lune Juice Strawberry Shandy and it was delicious. I thought it was a cider it was so light. I order the fish tacos, 2 flour tortillas and one corn tortilla. I asked for avocado on the side and they were out of it so the waitress had them give me guacamole and I t was delicious. It was the pineapple guacamole from the appetizer menu. The fish portions were big and tasted really fresh. I loved this. My mom got the pad Thai with shrimp. I took a few bites and loved it. I only wish it had more spice but it's a great dish! After reading many of the reviews, I had high expectations. Unfortunately, they were not met, with one caveat. The cheese curds here are amazing. They are the closest I've found to the cheese curds that you might find at a fair, but slightly different. They're flavored with dill, and are served with a maple honey sauce. I'd return here just for the curds. My beloved and I both ordered chicken pad thai. Unfortunately, it wasn't great. It reinforces my belief that if you want great pad thai, you need to order it from a Thai establishment. In this case, instead of a fish sauce, it honestly seemed as if they substituted Frank's hot sauce. It overpowered the dish and simply wasn't that appetizing. Unlike other pad thai dishes elsewhere, this one had broccoli in it. We were both very disappointed in the dish and would not order it again. Our server was great, attentive, and friendly, refilling our water glasses as needed. I was really looking forward to visiting The Pickled Loon. The good news is that the outdoor seating on a beautiful summer evening was great. There seemed to be a lack of servers for the outside area and service was sparse. The cheese curds were pretty salty and cooked into some large chunks which meant when you tried to take one, you took about five. The carnitas tacos (on corn tortillas) allow for flour or corn tortilla choice and come with three. The portion is large but there was nothing special about them- the shredded cheddar jack cheese was by far the prominent feature along with the overly dry shredded pork. None of my dining partners' dishes looked very special and the promise of dining well al fresco was not fully realized. read more

The whole place is kind of dark, so I suppose it could make for a nice date place. I ate at the bar and the bartender was very friendly and helpful. I started with an order of the cheese curds. These were awesome! Just the right amount of breading on the soft balls of cheese. An order is plenty for 2 people to share as many of mine went uneaten. I ordered the daily special - a meatloaf sandwich. This was unexpectedly good! The bartender hyped it up, but it was really good! The meatloaf was soft and zesty. The cheese and sauce were both strong and really complimented the whole sandwich. The pretzel bun was soft and fresh - I highly recommend it on any sandwich there. Fries were standard. I absolutely love the Pickled Loon! We stop everything we are passing through and I am never disappointed in the food. They have amazing Pad Thai, Mac and Cheese, burgers, sandwiches, apps, and cocktails. The Roasted Turkey Poutine is fanatic. I also really enjoyed the shrimp burger. They have a decent beer list, but also have various infused vodkas. My favorite was the dill pickle vodka which was used to make an awesome dill pickle martini. Found this gem of a tavern/restaurant via Yelp and trusted the reviews-the reviews do not lie. We stopped here with our family of five based on their stellar looking menu. The food was amazing! I had a the fish and chips and was ill for three days afterward. I can not definitively say the food was the cause. However it was the only thing I ate that day plus the fish had an odd taste and I was unable to finish the meal. I pointed it out to the server and they said that was how the fish normally tasted. I only wanted one but it was so tasty I got another I also ordered the fried pickle spears & the cream cheese pickle wontons - finished them all they were delicious! This place is a jewel: simple, clean, nice staff though I did wait a bit longer than I think appropriate before anyone spoke to me. Full transparency: I visited here twice today - one early afternoon and one early evening. I'm combining my experiences into one review. As always when I go to a pub, I was looking for a brown ale. None were to be had. Disappointing, but honestly in the current market I've come to expect it. I ended up getting a gin&tonic and a rum& coke. Both well made. I'm particularly picky about gin&tonic, and this one (poured by JP) was perfect. While here I tried the peanut-butter-bacon burger, the Ruben Rolls, and the Pickle Wontons. There are a lot of creative appetizers on the menu. I regret that I couldn't justify ordering a couple more to try. I was talked into the PBB burger by a friend. After one bite I exclaimed, "I get it!" Crispy bacon, just enough PB, great patty, pretzel bun. I'll try this burger everywhere I see it and will always compare the others to this one. The Ruben Rolls are just fantastic, so much so that I kept pushing them at people saying 'try these they're fantastic'. It's a Ruben sandwich perfectly captured in a really great egg roll. Filling is hot but not scalding, generous but not overwhelming. The Picked Wonton was not at all what I expected despite having read it on the menu. It just doesn't go where you think it's going. The wonton is generously large and crispy, and the unusual filling is terrific but defies my ability to summarize it. It's pickly, creamy, rich, a bit hearty and a bit light.
