Visiting the Cape from out of state over Christmas week, I made reservations for the Christmas eve special dinner for the entire family (5 adults + a baby) 3 weeks in advance. They personally called to confirm a few days before, a nice touch.
The atmosphere was incredible: a well-preserved and maintained charming rustic building with wood burning fireplaces making even the parking lot smell welcoming. It was a slightly chilly night with a light snow, which added to the Christmas eve experience but as the building is old and has single paned glass with only the fireplaces warming it, it was cool in spots though never uncomfortably so.
We started with a plate of raw oysters, which were served on ice with every accompaniment imaginable : lemon, fresh horseradish, hot sauce, cocktail sauce, and a cucumber and garlic mignonette. The oysters were fresh and the sauces all excellent pairings, and the server explained each in detail. They also served a dark pumpernickel bread with butter which was fantastic, though it would have been even better had it been warmed.
Our party tried the dry aged ribeye, clam pasta, brick chicken, and morrocan lamb ragout, finishing with the zeppolis. Every single dish was executed superbly, with flavors, textures, and temperatures all on point. The ingredients were all fresh and high quality, and each of us were blown away by the attention to detail and quality of the dishes. The meats were all tender, juicy, and full of flavor. The pastas were all homemade and fresh. The sauces and vegetables accentuated the dishes perfectly.
For beverage service, they had an extensive wine list and a variety of local beers. I chose a nice malty local coffee porter, and their signature fireside chat bourbon cocktail, finishing the meal with a nice strong shot of espresso.
Never once did we have any problem with service or food. The servers were quick to fill empty water cups and clear plates, but never did we feel rushed. If anything we waited a bit longer than we expected for the dessert menu and check, but not overly so.
The cash discount was a bit misleading, and I can see where people stumble trying to figure it out. The check amount is the cash price, and they add a surcharge if paying by card. I paid with cash and at first expected to have 4% discounted off the total, which did not happen. Regardless, the bill for 5 of us came to just under $200 before tax and tip, which was an incredible value for the experience we were given.
My only disappointment is that I'm here for just 4 more days, so I can't eat here beyond that. But in that time I'll be sure to come back at least once! read more
