The Good: My friend and I were strolling downtown Plattsburgh and decided to get something to eat. We finalized on The Pepper after seeing how packed it was and looking through the menu which had many tasty looking offers - quesdilla, enchiladas,and turkey with mole. We had to wait about 40 minutes for a table for two on this busy Friday evening and after being seated by a pleasant waitress, and eating yummy chips with dip, we were ready to order. The Bad: In the vibrant ambiance of laughter, music, and lovely wall art, I was happy to see my meal of chicken and asparagus enchiladas ($15) with rice and beans on the side (the waitress' recommendation). It looked appetizing with two enchiladas with cheese melted on top. However it didn't take me very long to realize that looks aren't everything. Throughout the entire meal I was dousing my rice and beans with the hot sauces provided on the table. I kept dipping my chicken in sour cream. It wasn't until I was nearly done with my meal that I realized I was craving salt! My dish was flavorless and dry - esp. the rice and beans. The enchiladas were average but tasted like the enchiladas you microwave by Lean Cuisine. Conclusion: At the end of the meal I felt full but dissatisfied. For all the pomp and circumstance, the Pepper's dish was not very appetizing and will leave you wanting more. My friend having a plate of seafood enchiladas ($17) concurred. I haven't been to The Pepper in many years and now I remember why; the food is REALLY BAD! I ordered a seafood enchilada. That would be shrimp, scallops and crab in a flour tortilla with cheese. What I got was 3-4 tiny shrimp, a couple of tasteless bay scallops, no crab meat all smothered in a glop of melted cheese. There was NO TORTILLA. The food was so hot from the oven that it had no flavor. Anyone who thinks this is Mexican food, has never had Mexican food. This mess was priced at $20.00. To be fair, the sangria was ok. Today was my last experience with the Pepper. I ordered take-out and my food tasted as if it had been sitting in the kitchen all night. The Chile Rellenos was soggy- probably a result of how much cheap nasty cheese they stuffed it with. The food was so cold, I tried to warm it up in the oven but afterward my Relleno turned into a sopping pool of cheese. If it couldn't get worse, the rice was dry and old and the beans were clearly out the can. I've never been to a "Mexican" restaurant that can't even make rice. Tisk tisk tisk. I have been to the Pepper many months ago and the food was fresh and the ingredients were local. Well, I guess they took the slippery slope of making poor business choices in a small town. I have loved The Pepper since I've been going there, which is about 4-5 years! I considered it to be one of the best Mexican restaurants I have experienced. NOT ANY MORE! margaritas are still great! Rolls Royce is my personal favorite. But the food and the customer service has gone down hill! Pretty much since the new owner has taken over. I have had numerous meals that were inconsistent. I order pretty much the same thing each time and I expect it to taste the same, if not similar each and every time. About a week ago, I went to The Pepper with my boyfriend. It was late and we were just catching the kitchen before they closed. When we arrived, we were seated and had to wait about 10 minutes for the waitress AKA OWNER!! to wait on us. No water and no margaritas. I grew impatient so I went to the bar and ordered my own drink. It wasn't that busy either, she was actually standing near the bar, perhaps working, perhaps chatting, don't know and don't really care. So she takes our orders finally, not too friendly either. When I get my entree that I had just ordered about 3 days prior to this when I had come in for lunch, I was appalled. It was a quesadilla and wasn't cooked all that much, falling apart and the tortilla was still white, no brown crisp. There is supposed to be shrimp in it but I could only see 3 small pieces and usually the shrimps are little baby shrimp. So i tasted it and it was really bad! blegh! Of course I couldn't eat it so I told the waitress AKA OWNER my grievances and did I get an apology? absolutely not! She just stared at me blankly as if I was offending her? she also said she couldn't make me anything else since the kitchen was closed. Which was ok with me because I has soup left over, which was ok. so then we get the check and my meal was still on the check!! I was shocked since I didn't eat it! and so I asked about it and she just stared at me blankly once again and said I ordered it and that she had taken it to the back and checked for shrimp and she saw some. WHAT?!?! so not only are you not accommodating, but you're pretty much accusing me of lying?!?! No way! So I asked, do you think I just came in here to order a dish and then send it back? what is the point of that? and again, another blank stare!! It was very upsetting to have the realization that I will no longer be a patron of The Pepper. I may go in for a margarita at some point, but I will not order the food. Hopefully they step their game up and keep everything Consistent. Horrible, horrible experience!! read more

The margaritas here are out of this world. However, the service, not so much. Absolutely terrible. We were one of two tables in the entire restaurant!! Our server forgot about our drinks for over a half hour. She rushed us throughout our meal and we saw her behind the bar texting away. She never checked on us or cared to even ask if we wanted water. Extremely overrated! The drinks are Mexican, the names of the foods are Mexican, but the food is not Mexican. The most Mexican things in the restaurant was the alcohol, myself and my Mexican friends who I was there with. Ordered the chilaquiles, and instead got a sloppy mountain of nachos with who knows what on it. The chips used were the same as the old chips they give the table. No one could finish more than half of what was on their plate, all we wanted to do when we got the food was pay and leave. But if it's a Mexican themed bar you're looking for this your place, as for calling it a Mexican restaurant...I don't think so. read more

Best salsa and chips out of any Mexican restaurant I have ever been to. Margaritas are great and cheaper on average than anywhere throughout the U.S. Taco plate with braised beef and rice on the side is my go-to. Nachos are top notch, chimichanga is decent and the sonoran turkey quesedilla with mango salsa are also good choices. read more

The chips were fresh and the salsa and guacamole were both house-made and delicious. The tortilla soup had a nice spicy, smoky flavor, but it was pureed (never had tortilla soup prepared that way before). Fish tacos were fresh, and the margarita with house-made sour mix was perfect. The flan was also very good - pleasantly eggy and not too sweet. However, the service was very, very slow - we were there on a busy night, but there were plenty of servers standing around. We decided to stop in and give the Smoked Pepper a try on a recent visit to Plattsburgh. The Chicken Fajitas I ordered are not what I am used to receiving at other Mexican restaurants. The chicken already had a red pepper sauce on it so there was no guacamole, salsa, or sour creme that came with it. It didn't need it!!! It was darn tasty. My wife has always disliked fish tacos. However the waitress talked her into them and she really enjoyed them. Again, the food we received is not what I would consider Mexican having lived in Texas a good portion of my life. What we did receive was pretty good though and I would go out of my way to eat here again. read more

My daughter and I went for lunch. Not very busy at the time of our visit, however, we waited approximately 45 minutes for food. My daughter's food came out 10 minutes before mine did. The server said she was sorry, but I don't know if I believed her. Despite the long wait, the food was not good. The salsa served with the chips had a weird texture. The tomatoes in the salsa were leathery. It may have been frozen and then thawed one too many times. My daughter got the nachos and I had the fajita salad with seasoned chicken. The nachos were reported as good. The fajita salad was not. The seasoned chicken appeared to be seasoned primarily with chili powder without salt. The "caramelized" onions were not caramelized, the roasted red peppers were startling cold compared to the other ingredients in the salad, the salad greens were grossly and unappetizingly wilted from what I'm hoping was the heat of the chicken versus just being rotten. Based on my first and only visit here, I love this place. I had the special of the day it was a Habenero BBQ polled pork chimichanga served with a side of rice and a side of black beans. Everything was great, the server was nice, and I had no trouble parking. Granted, I arrived at an off peak hour so that may explain the parking. As a Mexican place goes, it did not feel that authentic, but then the food was what I was there for. Servings were larger than I expected, and I completely ate it all, which I don't usually do. I have also heard from co workers here that they have had really good meals here and really bad meals here. They did say that the bad ones were when they were packed and very busy. This was by far one of my worst experiences in a Plattsburgh restaurant. First, my daughter and I arrived at 1 and asked for outdoor seating. We were told to choose a table. A greeter promptly brought us a small bowl of chips and salsa and told us our waitress would be right over. We continued to wait for her. We finished the chips and salsa and waited another 20 minutes before our order was taken. We still had no drinks. After 20 more minutes we finally received our drinks. We had a 2:35 appointment a block away so my daughter politely asked if our order could be boxed up to go when it was ready. Mind you, we had to snag her to ask her this. She kept avoiding our table. The man behind us had left after waiting 20 minutes for his bill. Another man sat down and received his drink, appetizer and meL all within 15 minutes. At 2:20, I went looking for our waitress. She tried to claim she was swamped although there were only 3 couples inside and three other people outside. I told her that she could have at least checked on us periodically to see if we wanted more to drink or more chips, but she just stood there trying to come up with excuses. What really happened is that she forgot to put in our order until we asked for it to go. Needless to say, I paid for my beer and told her to keep the food as our order wasn't even done and we were going to be late for our appointment! Crappy service! Not impressed! read more
