I have used The Paint Chip twice for framing and can definitely recommend them. I have never bought art supplies, but it seems like they have a large selection. The first time I brought in a print and needed a whole frame and glass. After picking out the frame design and glass type, the total cost came to about 35$. They were able to take off a couple more $$ because of a green machine coupon I had. The next time, I only needed a piece of glass to replaced a cracked picture. They cut it while I waited and only charged me a few dollars. read more

Never ever get anything framed here. I took in a piece of original art work to be framed and asked about archival matting and backing. The employee looked at me blankly like an opossum about to get hit by a car on a dark night. "We just use cardboard for backing," said the poor fool behind the counter. The prices are through the roof and the materials they use are likely to destroy your art. read more

I needed to frame a 48"x 30" reasonably expensive art piece and contacted Andrew Dorn, who did a great framing work for me in the past when he was working in the Pacific Auction Company in Davis. He told me that he now works at Paint Chip and highly recommended this shop. I wanted to frame a piece in the shadow box without mounting the piece on the board, because it would significantly decrease the future value of the art piece. This is a rather daunting task because having such a large piece of paper unmounted without any wrinkles requires great framing/mounting skills. I am a rather difficult demanding customer and usually find some tiny discrepancies, which bug me and require to fix these. But I found the final product simply put spectacular from the point of view of craftsmanship and execution. Both Brian Sturges and Andrew Dorn did flawless framing and placement respectively. The whole process was easy. Maria Sturges took an order, was knowledgeable and responsive to all my questions and the framing was done on time. I will definitely come back for future projects. I highly recommend the Paint Chip shop to anybody who needs high quality framing. read more

i love art supplies!!!!!!!! so of course i love this place. everyone that worked here was really nice, it was such a great way to spend a saturday morning or a summer day - just strolling up and down the aisles finding out all these cool new things and geting inspired to make art. (and then when you get home and try realized that your'e crap at it and just spent all this money thinking you could do it.) hahaha, but still, i love it.. and everyone once ina whilei sitll get inspired to bust out the oil pastels and paints and pretend like i know what i'm doing. read more

Went in today to buy art supplies. My newly potty trained 3 year old immediately had to go to the bathroom. The staff refused to let us use their bathroom and directed us to the friendly chain establishment (Starbucks) across the street. Next time I'll just go to Target, where I know they'll let us use the bathrooms. read more

For my 21st birthday, a cousin of mine spent over 20 hours painting a portrait of one of my favorite musicians, Bob Marley. She gave it to me as a present. I was so touched my the piece of art, that I knew I wanted to have it custom matted and framed. I took it over to the Paint Chip where a lovely young lady helped me customize my order. She said to come back in a few days and it would be ready. I never heard from them, so I swung by to pick it up. When I went, I was told it wasn't there. The painting had been stolen. The lady that helped me before, said she was pretty sure she knew who it was. An employee was mesmerized by the painting when it was brought in, but was fired recently. She was pretty sure it was the previous employee. I filed a police report and met the owner. The owner was awful, showed no sympathy and was reluctant to even refund me the charges for the framing. My painting was stolen. He knew it. The lady that worked there knew it and NOTHING was done. I was taken advantage of as a UC Davis student not knowing how to legally deal with the situation. NEVER do business here. The Paint Chip, especially the owner, is the WORST. read more

Friendly, home-town feel (since it is a unique shop for Downtown Davis). It is more expensive and has less variety than department store paint shops, but it is so easy to access for essentials and they have everything you would need for an art project. I love their supplies and they have good gifts for kids and friends - the service is amazing because they want to make your artistic side dreams come true! They have all kinds of paints, canvases, and many kinds of value packs so the more you buy the more value you get for your purchase. read more

The Paint Chip is an amazing place! The staff is wonderful and friendly, the art supply section is plentiful, but the real gem in the store is the custom framing section. They know their stuff! I have had a number of different items (paintings, embroidery, and prints) framed here. There prices are actually much less than some of the chain places and they are extremely helpful and patient with making the selections. They have a very large frame/matting selection to choose from as well. I also buy my cross-stitch materials here. They have good quality cloth, hoops, thread, and needles. I've come in with my 7 year old and I loved how they treated her like a serious artist when discussing colored pencil choices. She definitely left with spring in her step after that interaction. read more

It's a shop that sells art supplies and art books and other various crafting things. Since it's a small business the variety is limited but it wasn't too bad. I saw lots of sketchbooks, paints, crayons, pastels and etc. I only went there for the origami paper which is more expensive than other places in Sacramento. But considering it's a small business I assume that's why the prices are raised a little. I would go back if I needed something that day and couldn't get it elsewhere. read more

The Paint Chip sent me a very generous coupon to their store in a "Welcome to Davis" packet. Not sure I would have gone in without it. Ended up getting something framed and buying a bunch of supplies to paint. The store looks small on the outside but they have a ton of great supplies in there! It goes back further than you realize. It's fun to wander around and think about what you could make. The customer service was great. They were so welcoming and helpful. I had a lot of questions about my painting project--I really didn't know what I was doing at all. They never made me feel dumb for not being a "serious" artist. They answered all my questions, walked me over to supplies I wasn't sure about, never tried to push me to buy anything. And the piece I had framed looks fantastic. It was a silly old piece of etched glass that has more sentimental value than true beauty but they never blinked and gave me some fabulous suggestions. Arianna (sp?) must have spent at least 30 minutes just on my project and I wasn't even looking at the expensive options. I never would have picked up the matting and frame she suggested, but they are the ones I ended up choosing because the look was so striking. It was exactly what I was going for. She listened to me about what I was looking for and the room it was going in. Then they put it all together for me while I ran another errand. Great to spend money in a small, local business.
