It specializes in Central and South American imports of jewelry, women clothes and accessories, home decor, tablecloths, linen napkins, pillows and much more. Right when I stepped in. It hit the right vibe with me. The merchandise was bright n cheerful ranging from everyday items to whimsical I want. All of it was of quality and priced comparably. The pricing ranged from as low as $5 and upwards. I gravitated towards the brightly colored figurines, blankets, and tablecloths. The tableclothes, napkins, and oven mittens I eyed were made from a Guatemalan women co-op. They use an ancient weaving technique called backstrap weaving. The owner was explaining this to me. As she was explaining, I was critically examining the tablecloth and was impressed. It looked machine created. The quality was superb, these textiles are heirloom quality. Plus the colors and pattern are classic Mayan style which ironically blends to mid century American style. Timeless and classic. The owner is a wonderful woman. Inside it is an Art Gallery, and also a multipurpose activity/community space. Through the front door, which is located at the corner of 1st and E streets past some large art sculptures, is a book store of published art books, and to the left corner is a info/cashier counter and person. Past that opens up to a large multistory atrium area, filled with art, but also a couple of tables with 4-5 chairs each. In the hot Davis summers, this is a cool place to hang out, literally, as there is OPAC available for you (Other People's AC), and WiFi! Currently the artist featured on this floor is Mark Bullwinkle, an American artist with SF Bay Area roots and metal quirky sculpture installations, particularly in Emeryville and Berkeley, that he created with a blowtorch. Up the stairs or elevator to floor 2, there is a study/lounge that over looks the atrium below, with other artists' work in the nooks and crannies around the staircase and little rooms. The 3rd floor is a full art floor, with mostly ceramic sculptures from various artists. It is free to enter. I did an event here a year ago, a UC Davis student's birthday party with entertainment in the atrium space. And more recently I came here with 2 friends to chill in the OPAC and tables/chairs in the 1st floor Atrium before heading on to dinner on a lazy Sunday afternoon road trip.

The image sat on a wall behind the bar and it was beautiful I never bothered to find out who the artist was, and this I very much regretted when the bar burned to the ground within the last decade. Fast forward to spring of 2026, and I am reading the Smuggler's Cove (San Francisco tiki bar) book and see the exact piece of art in the book that is also showcased in their bar. I Google imaged it and learned who the artist was, and that began my search on the internet. I was able to find the piece on Ebay, but it was beyond my price range. Then in June 2026 I was an an estate sale in Sacramento, and there she was in all her glory in the garage. I immediately bought the print that was fastened to a piece of masonite in a raw frame. Later the following week I began my search for frames for this huge print on Facebook Marketplace, Etsy etc.. I decided to inquire locally to get an idea of what it would cost to mat and frame this piece I've wanted for decades, and was now mine. I went into Blue Wing first before heading to big box framers (Michael's), and this was the absolute best decision ever. Staff at Blue Wing evaluated the piece in person, and there was some concern on my behalf and theirs how the print was lifting off the masonite at the rectagular edges of the raw frame. They researched other places where I could potentially purchase a fresh print, and we discussed how much I liked the oval frame presentation at Smuggler's Cove, and they suggested in oval mat in a rectangular frame, so I could achieve the elegant look to highlight the image but with a rectangular frame. This would help me to achieve the look I wanted, without the exorbinate cost of an oval frame, while preserving the entire print and mitigating the issue of further lifting off the masonite. Measurements were taken, and a mat color and frame were chosen, as well as museum glass to mitigate excessive glare because the piece was so large, for an estimate. I was pleasantly surprised at how reasonable the pricing was, and I did not have to look further. I felt very secure in leaving this task to Blue Wing professionals in the business, vs. folks who just "work at a store who provides framing". Blue Wing cut a template of the oval mat for me to review, to ensure the elements of the image were fully captured to my liking. The completed project was outstanding, and they finished the matting and framing a week before the anticipated delivery date. Not only was I happy for how the piece turned out, but their engagement, professional suggestions and patience was top notch. I picked up the newly matted and framed image today, and its outstanding! I 100% recommend Blue Wing for your framing needs. They are professional, engaging, and demonstrate the goal of achieving what the customer desires for their art, with very reasonable pricing and excellent service!

Within the "world history" shelf, I saw a row of books specifically about Israel and Zionism, albeit not labeled as such. The only book with Palestine in the title was on display, but on the back cover it specified that it recounts the "experiences of Zionist women settling in Palestine", and not indigenous Palestinians. I scanned the shelf and didn't see a single book about Palestine, despite a fair number on Israel. Given how charged this topic is with the ongoing genocide in Gaza, I felt uncomfortable as it seemed that the bookstore had taken an intentional stance by not providing, at the very least, accounts of both sides of the matter.

We parked in the public parking lot (free parking) and were walking towards Main Street when this shop's signage, Earthbound Ceramics, caught our attention. Hubs thought it was a ceramics shop selling...ceramics. We walked on in. There was a ceramics workshop in progress. No problem. The owner was there and she was super cool. She and her husband own the shop. She explained the ceramics workshop studio concept. They offer a variety of classes for all skill types and ages; and membership levels. Even the students inside were cool and shouted out praise. Chill, friendly community vibe. The students were ethnically diverse even. The shop interior was beautifully designed. Modern, contemporary comfort. There are pamphlets outside the shop. I grabbed one as we left. The classes (especially the advanced classes) are taught by professional, experienced artists. The classes vary by topics (by skill level)and they even have classes for the kiddos. They also offer studio time, membership rates, and party event rental. The class pricing is comparable and to me possibly a bit cheaper than their Sacramento counterparts. What caught my attention was the 2 hour wheel throwing class $50. Hmm ... I thought to myself that would be a nice introductory course.

Although I don't take 3-dim art classes here it looks like it would be rewarding to create beautiful mosaics from huge chunks of clay and chipped glass while listening to cool retro background music. There are dramatics classes who rehearse outside behind the stage for the "theatre in the park" productions. There are music classes, singing classes, and a variety of cultural dance classes. As an Added bonus... All DAC dance studio floors are solid tongue and groove wood. Did I mention that wood dance floors are almost nonexistent in Northern California? With that said its the floors that drew me to the Davis art center, as any respectable rhythm tapper would. As a community non profit organization taking classes at the DAC should not burn a hole in your octet book. Plus 1 star for that. Enrollment fees & tuition fees are nominal compared to a private studio plus you automatically become a member of the DAC after enrolling in a class. You should really check this place and take a class for fun. Go ahead and dust off that old Yamaha instrument in the back of your closet...you won't regret it.
