I admit, I'm a Wardrobe addict. Once you get over the notion that you are going to 'save' money by shopping at Target, Macy's or another big box store, you will see my point. The real cost of a garment comes down to cost per wearing. Can I tell you how many Macy's on sale pieces I have Never worn? How many Target pieces hung to junk in 3 months? Ms Caswell has been a success in the style business for almost 3 decades because she's really good at choosing clothing that will stay on your "A" list season after season. I love her special occasion pieces. She carries lines with all the style and quality of garments that cost four times as much at Nordstrom's. I told you, she's good at this! I speak from years of shopping training. Starting around age 7, my mother, sister and I would shop all day Saturday. Either the Hillsdale Mall in San Mateo or downtown San Francisco. We didn't stop for lunch. Mom bought 1/4 lb of Sees candy and we ate between stores. All the stores closed at 5:00. I remember arriving home exhausted and excitedly spreading out our finds after the grueling day of hunting the best deals. My first word was "material" and I can survey a rack at 15 yards and find the cashmere coat. So I speak from years of experience. The Wardrobe is the place to shop if you care about quality, style and price. Would I love to spend $6000 on an Armani coat? Of course I would. Is shopping at The Wardrobe the next best thing? I just had the worst shopping experience ever here. Poor customer service, rude unsoliceted advice. The woman that rung us up was condescending and extremely pretentious. In addition to that, it took her over 20 minutes to ring us up (we had a shirt and a lip gloss) and she stopped halfway through to help a customer that just walked in to find a dress she reserved. The only redeeming factor are the cute clothes... though even the clothing isn't worth the crappy service. read more

While some items are pricey, much of what they offer is unique--offering the chance to have interesting clothes, jewelry and accessories. I love buying friends gifts there. I'm motivated to write a review now to say that I appreciate that the owner, Heather Caswell, answered my plea for a local auction donation. It's hard to be a thriving business in any town, in Davis, there's additional pressure to "perform." I know that lots of smaller businesses are asked to donate to numerous charities. I'm getting married in less than a month, and up until this evening I've been dressless. This afternoon my mother informed me that this level of procrastination is utterly ridiculous. "You get out there and buy a dress, you idiot," is how I think she put it. I sheepishly cut out of work early this evening and headed for The Wardrobe. Having seen some photographs of dresses and a list of the labels they carry on their website, I was seeking something unique, funky, and non-traditional. Something, how do you say, Sue Wong-esqe. Heather spent about two hours assisting me with my endeavor. After deciding that the very first dress I tried on was, perhaps, "the one", she brought out several matching shawls that clinched the deal. After a few people try on the same dress, beadwork can get a bit worn. The Wardrobe offers those who purchase dresses full price free beadwork repair, with a quick turnaround. When I return to pick up my new dress this weekend, I plan on trying it on again and spending some time amongst the cases of gorgeous necklaces. read more

I was on an impossible mission trying to look for a bracelet to fit my teeny tiny wrists so walked into this place on a whim. The owner (I think) was polite and attentive despite there being other people in the store, who seemed like they were regulars. After I showed her a picture of the one shoulder burnt orange dress I was trying to find accessories for, she asked me a few other questions like what sort or event it was going to, what my regular style was etc, and then went through the store and came up with all these great different combinations and alternatives. Some, I wouldn't have even thought of. She was great, and not pushy or judgmental (even though I clearly looked like a poor college student). And I loved the collection she had in her store. From locally made products, to exquisite items, The Wardrobe seems to have something for everyone (another customer came in and bought this beautiful Eileen Fisher top for a wedding she was attending soon). Overall, it is a really nice place to check out if you are looking for accessories, bags, scarves and clothes, and a great place to find a gift for that special someone too. read more

I LOVE the Wardrobe. When tired of things from Target and Marshalls I can get unique, beautiful, high-end clothing right in downtown Davis. No longer do we have to cough up a ticket to Paris (not that I had the money to do that) to find gorgeous fashion. Yes it's expensive, but three of my Marshalls finds equals one high-end piece of art from the Wardrobe. And I always check out the sale rack in the back--or during the warmer months, right out on the street in front of the store. The other thing I love about the Wardrobe is its commitment to the community. Heather Caswell constantly hosts art openings, breast cancer events, book signings, and color consults. She's also started "Women Who Make A Difference" to celebrate the local women who are doing things that make the world a better place. Caswell is truly a renaissance woman and her store is an example of how beautiful she and her faith in the community are. You owe it to yourself to make the Wardrobe a part of your world. read more

I had the unfortunate experience of visiting this store earlier this year for an event they were having. I thought the store looked really cure from the outside and the offerings were nice...good quality, etc. I was all ready to make a rather large purchase when I overheard a woman (who I later found out was the owner) speaking unbelievably disrespectfully to the woman working behind the counter. It was unprovoked and the employee looked truly shocked and embarrassed to be spoken to that way. As soon as this horrid woman walked away I approached the employee and asked her who that woman was. She explained to me that it was the owner and she apologized and told me that she speaks to all the employees that way. I told her that i couldn't imagine working in an environment like that and I felt so bad for her. She told me that no one sticks around and that several other good employees had quit recently and she was looking for another job as well. I told her that while I really liked the dress I was planning to buy I could not in good conscience financially contribute to a woman who treats her employees so badly. There are many adorable boutiques in Davis within walking distance of this one so I will give my business elsewhere. read more

The Wardrobe is one of my favorite places to shop. Luckily, my sister lives in Davis, so we shop there together when I'm visiting from Marin. I often buy gifts as well as clothing and jewelry for myself when I'm there. I especially like the Firefly line of jewelry and Sympli, Joseph Ribkoff, and Desigual lines of clothing. I especially like Sympli for everyday as well as travel outfits, and pieces can be ordered which is nice for me because I wear small sizes. Heather is always friendly and helpful. She is a contributor to the community and to women's issues, which I appreciate. I enjoy sharing travel stories with her, too.
