I had a great visit here. Excellent selection! I found the book I needed. I liked the gallery of art made by local artists. The lovely woman working that Sunday was very sweet, welcoming and helpful. It's cool that they're run by volunteers and that supposedly all proceeds go to the Davis Library, but what threw me off was how they have a whole section dedicated to Zionism. It was the last thing I expected to see in cute ole Downtown Davis. I'd say come to Sac if you're looking for bookstores that won't make you feel weird entering. Edit: To clarify, I found it pretty disappointing that there was an entire shelf dedicated to European history, and another shelf generalized as "world history". Within the "world history" shelf, I saw a row of books specifically about Israel and Zionism, albeit not labeled as such. The only book with Palestine in the title was on display, but on the back cover it specified that it recounts the "experiences of Zionist women settling in Palestine", and not indigenous Palestinians. I scanned the shelf and didn't see a single book about Palestine, despite a fair number on Israel. Given how charged this topic is with the ongoing genocide in Gaza, I felt uncomfortable as it seemed that the bookstore had taken an intentional stance by not providing, at the very least, accounts of both sides of the matter. read more

Visited Logos Books for the first time a few weeks ago and it was just okay. Quite small and packed to move around when crowded. The one thing that I did like was how the proceeds go to the Davis Public Library. It's located in downtown Davis and was nice to walk around to the shops as well. read more

Logos is a wonderful local bookstore that has a fabulous collection of books on a wide variety of subjects from fiction to physical science and everything in between. It's a great asset to the Davis wide community. read more

The books that I buy are reasonably priced. I got a hard cover book by Stephan King the other day.

I stopped by Logos Books for the first time today and boy do I regret not going sooner. Their science fiction section is great - it's right at the front of the store and had a great mix of classics and books I'd never heard of before. And their prices are fantastic. I picked up this Richard Matheson short story collection for only $3! And many of the other books I was considering were just as cheap. I didn't venture too much further into the store so I can't speak to anything else (though I saw they had some really cool jigsaw puzzles for sale), but the science fiction section alone has me already wanting to go back for more. What a WONDERFUL bookstore! And all sales benefit the Davis Library! We found several books we "meant to read" in the past...now we own them and can read them! Some great classics, a few travel books, and some incredible history books! The volunteer salesperson was also super-friendly and helpful! Came here yesterday looking for a book but they didn't have it. In the process I met the nicest man! Not sure if he was the owner but he was so sweet, funny, and helped us as best he could. Excellent treasure hunt book store. Logos' tagline, "Used & Out-of-Print Books" is 100% accurate, so don't be surprised if recent bestsellers are not on the shelves here. In fact, I would be wary of coming with any specific book in mind. That's just not what they sell. What they do have is a rotating selection of rare and forgotten books, often on old or unpopular subjects. All of their books are donated, mostly from the Yolo County and UC Davis libraries, as well as some estates apparently. Imagine what kinds of books libraries like these might need to offload to make room for new selections--that's what Logos carries. Also, because all of their books are donated, the prices tend to be very good, usually under 5 dollars, causing stock to rotate fairly quickly. The result is a new selection to peruse at every visit. I have variously purchased a recent textbook on international law, one of the earliest popular books on mental illness (circa 1950), and a first edition of now-well-known book on religion and society. The store itself is fairly small and tightly spaced. Sometimes the owner is available to answer questions, but often it is just a cashier. Bargain carts as usually placed outside. Separate sections for fiction and children's books are also available. read more

I wandered in and spend some quality time browsing, while my Son was over at the nearby Bizarro Word with his beloved Magic Cards. I also enjoyed the cute doggy at the main desk. read more

A lovely little bookstore! Extremely affordable prices make this a great spot for any college student. I found so many novels and plus for my courses here at this bookstore. I wasn't too sure what I was looking for so she gave me a few suggestions and they turned out great!!! LOVED the mini collection in vintage books and French books she had! I thought this was a cute tiny little bookstore. I wouldn't say they have a huge selection but it was fun to browse inside of. I didn't find the book I was looking for, but considering the poetry section was only about two shelves long that is not surprising. Great place for gently used "old-school" children's books. Quiet, small, great prices.

The first time I discovered this little gem tucked in the corner of E st and 2nd street, I was drawn in by the old book smell. You know, that unique scent only found in older (and usually used) books that bibliophiles like me greatly appreciate. As I walked closer to the source of the scent, I was thrilled to see a place untouched and unchanged by fads or trends. One can find classics like Hemingway, Wilde, and Woolfe, and also contemporary works from Ishiguro, Morrisson, and Sedaris. Once you step in, there's a sense that bibliophiles are welcome and are encouraged to take their time and learn a thing or two. I admit, I got giddy like a little school girl when I found that the books were only a fraction of the price that I usually get my books for. What I found even more exciting was that all of the profits the owners make from selling the books go to two non-profit organizations (Doctors Without Borders/Medcins Sans Frontiers and Save The Children). It justified my occasional impulse purchases when I'm just meandering downtown and taking in the laid back nature of the Davis lifestyle. The selection changes every time I've walked in. Although it doesn't have a vast selection, but it compensates with charm. I'm amazed and over-joyed that independent booksellers like this survive despite the Age of Amazon. Logos Books is to me as Tiffany's is to Holly Golightly. It gives bibliophiles like me a place of refuge, as if the books that withstood time can also protect us from the uncertainty of changing times. They accept donations, but be forewarned that they do not convert it to store credit for another book. They also showcase artworks by local artists and promote French and Spanish speaking events occasionally. I am at a lack of words for how much I adore this place, so I recommend checking it out for yourself. read more

Unlike the redoubtable David Souter, I am unwilling to relocate the many books I have when I move, so some books will have to go in a few weeks, as I am Dixon-bound. Enter me looking for a used bookstore to sell to (or get store credit or whatever) and in (failing) to do so, found the answer to the question I posed in my earlier review of Logos: how the hell do they stay in business? It turns out 100% of their profits go to charity (I think DOCTORS WITHOUT BORDERS) and vast majority of their stock is donated. They are staffed by volunteers, and I can only imagine that they are given a charitable donation in the form of a rent credit for the space. This is a nicely laid out bookstore (with fresh flowers- sweet touch) that is well organized and well priced. It does feel a little more "scholarly" than Sweet Briar. The kids section had some gems, including a 1960's Thumbelina book with groovy 3-D effects. My daughter loved it while my son proclaimed it "creepy." I like the fact that they had local artist prints for sale on the walls and that the woman who helped me was very kind and genuine. I found one of Elizabeth Gilbert's older books (of the Eat, Pray, Love fad) for a great price. I ended up buying more books than I expected to- and in this economy that's always a good sign! read more

Davis now has a second used bookstore. This one's a nice alternative to Sweet Briar with (currently) fewer books, a slightly more academic bent. The atmosphere here is fine, with plenty of room for browsing and adequate lighting. The owner has been selling books over the internet for a while, but in this shop he prices most books around or slightly below Internet levels. And some technical or scholarly books (the ones that haven't been selling online at $$$ prices) are priced much more reasonably here. read more

I visit a lot of bookstores. Basically, every single bookstore I see, I have to at least stop in. I go to some bookstores and wander around a long time and there's nothing I see that I want to buy. I went in this bookstore, and I wanted to buy up half the store. I was sadly limited by the fact that I only brought one pannier on this trip to Davis, but managed to still get a whole stack of books for almost nothing. I came in after I read on Yelp that its the ONLY used bookstore in Davis. However, I left very disappointed. They only have a limited selection of books. They seem to specialize more in classics, than contemporary books. The lady was nice, but not very helpful in finding books or recommending. I won't be coming back here. read more

Though we didn't often visit here, I always enjoyed browsing the children's books with my son. Much of the layout of the store was not exactly inviting for some reason, so I didn't usually browse much beyond that. Today (Sunday, Jan. 29th) is the store's last day as Logos. They will be closed the following 2 days and will then reopen as a store operated by the Friends of the Davis Library. I'm sure we'll continue to visit and am sad to see Logos is no more, though it's wonderful that it will continue to be a used book store. read more

So I love used book stores. And Logos is the kind of used book store that I like. I went there on a whim hoping to find some stuff since I heard it just opened. Logos had just opened in February and their selection isn't much yet. But what they had, I liked. They have all sorts of books. Seriously, any type of genre or type of book you want, they have. What's great about them is that they also donate profits to charities. The prices of the used books are a steal, compared to other bookstores I've visited before. Go and visit! There is something museum-like about this bookstore. By that I mean the lack of a profit motive for its existence deflates its vitality a bit. Once upon my entering the attendant behind the desk was dozing, and when he woke up seemed surprised at my audacity in engaging in conversation about what Davis was reading those days. A good way to engage the community would be to institute a lively trade in books people could bring in for appraisals by staff knowledgeable about books (check out Avid Reader bookstore down the block--those guys know books). read more
