The Sophia was a dream if you love white sauce pizza -- creamy, flavorful, and perfectly balanced without being too heavy. The Golden State was one of the most unique pizzas I've had in the best way possible. Every bite had something interesting going on and who knew pizza and potatoes just work so well together. But the absolute star for me was the special "La Bomba." WOW. The Calabrian chili gave it the perfect kick and depth of flavor. It was bold, a little spicy, and completely addictive. I would honestly come back time and time again just for that pizza alone. They have a unique crust was perfectly cooked crispy on the outside, soft and chewy inside -- and you can tell they use high quality ingredients. The pizza at The Oven is absolutely the best you can get in the Monterey Peninsula. I order online or by phone and drive from Salinas, so it's ready when I get there. The ingredients are superb, the dough is freshly made, and you have choices of "West Coast" (sourdough) or "East Coast" (thin crust) and both are excellent. This is an order at the counter and sit down to eat. Take out is also available, and it's convenient that there's a 29 minute parking spot right in front. Ordering at the front counter was easy with friendly service. We were able to sit where ever we wanted since there was only one other party of 2 that came in right after us on a Sunday afternoon. The place was clean. They had the game on the large screen, and for some reason mid way though our stay, they blasted the volume way too loud for our liking. Not sure why since the 5 patrons were not talking loud. One star off for that. The small Cesar salad came out quick. The guy was nice and brought out plates to share - it is a shareable size. Dressing on the side - that was appreciated. However, my calzone took quite some time to come out. The guys that came in behind us got their pizza before we got our order. I should've suggested they serve our spaghetti first without waiting for the calzone. When the meat lover calzone finally arrived, it didn't seem very meat laden and the cheese was mostly concentrated in one half. It wasn't bad but I've had better. Another star off for that. However, the spaghetti came with three decent sized meatballs and the spaghetti portion was big. It also came with three pieces of garlic bread, or just buttered & seasoned bread since garlic flavor was not detectable. Went there for their sourdough crust as my family prefers sourdough when possible for all breads (digests better for them). I ordered a medium West Coast (sourdough) pepperoni for $20. It was ready in 25 minutes. The sauce was great and pepperonis came out browned with a good amount of cheese . They brush the crust edges with olive oil which was nice. Went in to get a pizza as this was my first time. I asked if we can add chicken to the garden veggie and was told no. Then I said okay il just build my own pizza then with chicken. Was told ok. We told the same clerk no we ordered the pizza and he went full blame mode and said i read you back the order. I didn't want to argue and said yes I heard you say Garden (there is a garden salad and a garden pizza) we then had to wait another 15 minutes for the pizza. I am diabetic. I was on a walk and became very thirsty came into this place and asked to buy some bottled water they said they were out but they could give me a cup of water I said thank you yes and the friendliness never stopped I eventually bought a zero sugar root beer and they let me set at a table until my ride arrived they were extremely pleasant the whole time. Stopped in here with the family craving pizza and decided to eat in. They have two types of pizza crust, a west coast and an east coast. We had to try both, and both were delicious. We had a salad too, which was nothing special, but it did the job. I definitely recommend this place, but I highly recommend avoiding the salami on the pizza. It was so tough it was hard to bite through, which definitely detracted from the eating experience. The young lady working there was quite nice too. First, terrific pizza you can have it a thick crust, Chicago style or a thin crust Boston style we ordered the thin crust Greek pizza. Super thin, chock full of feta cheese, sun-dried tomatoes, spinach, mozzarella cheese. We discovered it under "West Coast" style! A few complaints: they serve extra Parmesan cheese in very small pre-packaged single serve much like you would get salt and pepper. This "cheese" contains cornstarch, powdered cellulose , skim and cheese cultures along with milk. If you're going to go to the trouble of making a great pizza, then splurge and get real Parmesan. To me these packets are tacky. I've been here before several years ago and I admit we got there at noon and they weren't quite ready to be open. However, the restaurant looks untidy to me. Like they are just getting ready for gas. I need another 15 minutes! I would go back but order takeout and go someplace else to eat. That being said, the pizza is very good. read more

Spent $37 bucks on two medium pizzas vs. $200 at that sourdough pizza place in Aptos that will upcharge you on charcuterie and fancy wine when all you want is just a delicious quick affordable pizza. My kids smiled while eating the pizza and seeing them fold the pizza slices and tell a story about their experience was soulful and delightful. My niece came to visit me at work for a lunch date and pizza sounded good so we looked up nearby places and the oven had great reviews so we decided to check it out. The food was pretty good. The zucchini sticks were out of this world very fresh and the pizza Was very cheesy Believe you me it Has to be cheesy to be good pizza It did have a large amount of garlic. It didn't make it unbearable but it was definitely a large amount of garlic. You can see it all around the crust. The only thing I would change is probably say half garlic next time lol the ambience of the restaurant is old-school retro. There is record covers everywhere as well as in the tables. Pretty neat if you ask me. The service, however, was pretty nonexistent. The young lady that took her order really didn't even say hello just ask what what we wanted and brought out the pizza and that was it nobody checked on us or asked how things were -and we were not greeted upon entry, nor when we departed , it's OK though like I said the pizza was pretty good and I would probably go back just for the zucchini sticks alone It was about $37 for the 14 inch pizza, zucchini sticks and two soft drinks I would say that's pretty dang affordable especially in today's economy. They sell a variety of pizza, calzones, pasta, etc. A nice touch of the establishment is that you can see the pizza being made. They do have a beer/wine selection. They have high-chairs for the kiddos. The unisex bathroom was clean. As for the pizza itself, it was good. I had a cheese and margherita slice (they sell by the slice) in the East Coast/NY slice variety. The crust was light and crunchy, the sauce was good, but the cheese didn't have that zest that you normally expect. The margherita slice tasted just like the cheese slice, but with 1 tomato and some basil garnish. Would I come back? Yes. I definitely would come back to try other toppings and their Italian fare. I had the Caesar salad. It was handmade with big slices of Parmesan cheese, Best of all, the croutons were house-made! So flavorful and crunchy- they were a delight. My entree was the meatball sandwich, served with a small side of their marinara sauce. The meat was so lean, juicy and flavorful that I couldn't get enough.
