Ordered the pesto bowl and the portion was small for being $8.29. The bowl comes with Chicken, Zucchini, Brown Rice, and pesto sauce. The chicken was chopped into really small pieces and it looks like gave about 1/4 cup of it. The Zucchini was chopped into tiny pieces as well and you had to search for them. Every bite there was crunchy brown rice. Very disappointed. Students are being robbed. Portion size and quality is really horrible. read more

The CSULB staff were wonderful and lovely. This place is packed! I ordered Chicken Teriyaki Bowl and it was really high quality. The food tasted similarly to food at Long Beach Convention Center. The only thing I personally recommend is having a tad bit less teriyaki sauce on the food because the sauce was overwhelming everything else. Other than that, it was still amazing. I saw how popular the grilled cheese patty melts were and decided to also order it. It also came with a slice of pickle. After taking a bite of the grilled cheese patty melts, the patty was extremely burnt and tasted like charcoal. I politely requested another patty melt and the staff was proactive and kind about it. Cynthia, the manager, came out herself with the new patty melt and offered an apology. I was taken aback and didn't expect it because she didn't have to and I only cared about the patty melt. She went above and beyond to make sure things were right. I thought that was a very kind and thoughtful gesture. I highly recommend the patty melt. It was really that delicious!!! Unfortunately, this is the third time I've ordered the teriyaki chicken bowl at Outpost Grill at CSULB, and each time the rice has been completely uncooked and raw. It's not just undercooked--it's hard and inedible. I'm really disappointed because I kept giving it another chance, but the issue keeps happening. I'm not sure why this keeps occurring, but after three experiences like this, it's hard to trust ordering this item again. I tried their breakfast three times so far and each time I get a different result. What is constant is that the food always comes out hot, so I know they are making it to order. And they don't use a lot of salt, which I personally really like. These are the items I've gotten so far: The Ranchero Bowl ($9.99) - This was pretty good. I liked the slightly crispy hash browns at the bottom and the egg on top with the salsa on the side. Their salsa is pretty hot, so if you're not into spice, don't get it. On its own, it's a bland dish, but add the salsa, and it makes it taste so much better. I also really enjoyed ketchup with this dish :) I got a breakfast sandwich ($7.09+) one morning and it was exactly as described - Scrambled eggs with toast and your choice of meat (turkey, sausage or spam). Nothing else - salsa is extra (I think it's $.80), and you can grab ketchup for free when you pick up your meal. It was dry and pretty bland, but it tasted pretty good once you added ketchup and salsa. One day I tried their Spinach and Mushroom Burrito ($8.99) - This was pretty good, but again, bland without the salsa and the ketchup. I also wish they threw cheese in it to make it more of a savory dish. I would say, if you're watching your salt intake, this is a really good choice - Each item was made to order and it was hot when I picked it up. It's also nice because you can always add condiments to make it tastier. Just a quick note: If you're staff you won't be charged tax. Water cups and hot water are free here. I had ordered online through the app and the only thing that was annoying was that the pick up time kept getting pushed back. I ordered as soon as they opened at 7:30 and knew it would take them a little while but I didn't get my food until 7:50. Considering there was not any orders in front of mine and it said it would take about 7-10 minutes I was a little disappointed as I had a class at 8:00. Despite that, I had ordered the basic breakfast burrito and I was really good and the salsa it came with was very tasty. I definitely will be returning to the Outpost! read more

As far as on-campus food options go I think the food is pretty okay, however I think that for a campus that knows not all of their students have a ton of dispensable,e income I feel like the prices are pretty unreasonable. The quality of the food is not much better than what you would get at your average dining hall at CSULB. As a student at CSULB you're kind of limited on options when it's time to refuel in order to continue the school day. The closest restaurant to the engineering building, where I spend 100% of my time, is the Outpost. I've ordered the tenders, fries, tuna melt, and a couple of there burgers. The best thing I come back to is the tenders, they're a decent size and fill you up. I've had the chicken sandwich and it gave me a dull taste as if it had been frozen. The fries are also a go to to fill you up and the seasoned fries give it a little kick to your tastebuds, keeping your sense of taste alive! I went to this place to order fries and Mac n cheese bites before class. I paid $7 for two items. This amount for two items is so overpriced. The fries was not hot at all. My fries came out to be so cold. It made me sick to my stomach. I am never coming back here again. I rather go to the nuggets than this place where at least they served fries hot. I don't eat down there unless i really have to. Today was one of these times. I search for healthy options so I decided to locate the menu online, read it and choose. For my bad luck the actual menu downstairs does not match the actual menu :-( so I had to choose a different item. I thought the chicken is a white grilled chicken and ended up with a crispy fried one, and they serve you chips on the side... when I requested something healthy, she took the chips and I have to pay for the salad :-( I'll just share the picture of the salad. Pretty good spot to study on campus and I'm around friends and classmates and all since it's close to my department. Food's alright. I mainly get breakfast, like waffles, pancakes, breakfast burritos, and I've had sandwiches at some point, shared things like fries and chicken with friends and all. A very good spot to go to on campus to get food! If you are in lower campus area and do not want to take all the flights of stairs up to The Nugget! Food: they have a big variety which is awesome! Breakfast is served up to 11am. They have pizza, burgers, sandwiches, wraps, and etc. they have a 500 and under calorie option as well as veggie options. Basically the menu is just about the same as The Nugget. Pricing: decent pricing. However just bummed they don't have fries as a complementary side item. The food is nothing grand or extraordinary but you sort of get what you pay for. Except I paid more for my grilled cheese and fries than I would normally pay at In-N-Out. But I was hungry so I didn't have much of a choice. During school hours it's quite busy and bustling in here. People are here to study, eat or relax. Overpriced cafeteria food catered to college stooodents on the go or studying or chillaxing between classes. Burger = most fail, even Carl's Jr on campus makes better burgers with more flair and cheaper price. BBQ Chicken Quesadilla - $3.50 for a cheese with chicken and bbq sauce quesadilla that comes out in (not kidding) under 3 minutes. I barely made my way to the tables and sat down before they called me. The worst part was that they cut the quesadilla in the MOST STRANGE and UNUSUAL and AWKWARD shapes. Logically since a quesadilla is round, most places would slice across, forming pizza slice shapes and makes it easy to pick up a slice and eat. Here they cut one slice in a pizza triangle, then one slice that forms a L on two ends and the other side is a lopped-end-semi-circle, and the last slice comes out as a rectangle with one short side being curved....I cant even describe it correctly. Bottom line, they decide to cut it weird and make it immensely awkward for you to hold up and eat (its so heavy on one end or the other that it sags and self-drags the inner contents out). Lastly, the service sucks balls. Theres a sign to show ur student ID to get a "tax discount". Showed my ID. And between showing my ID to ordering to paying, the cashier forgot to give me the "tax" discount. Realllly not gonna argue for such a pittance but seriously, thats bad service, thank goodness these people that work here dont need precision and accuracy that could kill someone. I always get their california club because it's really bomb and consistent. I have tried their buffalo chicken salad which I thought was really bad. It's right by where all my classes are so it's a very convenient place to eat. It gets really crowded during lunch time though. It's hard to find a table around noon. Update: I just tried the breakfast burrito today with chorizo meat (you can select from different choices of meat), comes with salsa and it was delicious and satisfying. Other posters have mentioned that this place is "overpriced" but I think the pricing is pretty fair. $5.49 for a fresh sandwich and no sale tax if you are a student. Perfect rating for convenience and selection. It's located right next to the engineering buildings, which makes it very convenient for me to grab a quick bite to eat in between classes. I like to dip my fries in a mix of ketchup and ranch. They also have a daily special combo that changes every day of the week. Busy during times when everyone's out for lunch, be ready for a long wait. Tables are very scarce during those peak hours. I too found myself here a lot because I work pretty close. The food here is pretty good. Although they have a few salads, most of the items here a pretty greasy and unhealthy, but not too bad to eat every once and awhile. However, I think the food here is a bit overpriced, but I do keep coming back. The seating at The Outpost is plentiful, especially inside. However, during the school year, it can still fill up, especially during the lunch rush. Everyone who works here is really nice and cheery, and they are always very helpful. The service is really quick and they have an open soda fountain. Located right next to the VEC, the outpost is a traditional diner serving different kinds of foods from burgers to breakfast burritos. I ordered the turkey club because I saw some reviews on it and man.. it's pretty good lol The only downside is that it's pretty expensive even with the discount (especially for college students). The turkey club by itself was about $6. I threw in some fries (seasoned) and the totally was about $8.52 without a drink. This is conveniently located for any one who has classes on the east side of campus (towards Palo Verde Ave). As one of the few, if only, spots to eat on this side of school, it's no wonder that this place is always packed to the brim. The alternative would be to go to food court or The Nugget but that is isn't really an option when you are pressed for time. The food here is not bad and the variety is good. I've had their pizzas, burgers, and salads and they were all pretty decent. They also have sandwiches, hot dogs, wings, and breakfast food is served until 11:30am. NOTE: What you order makes a bit deal on how long you have to wait. If you get a salad, you're going to get your order promptly. If you get a pizza, prepare to wait. I do have a problem with their price-to-portion ratio though. I ordered their 1/2 pounder burger which was suppose to be their biggest and baddest burger but it fell "short" of my expectations. This tiny burger did not justify $7-$8 I paid for it and left me hungry. If I had made it a combo, it would have been about $11. You can probably score 4 Double Meat burgers from In-N-Out for around the same price. This spot wins for its convenience as it is a close walk away from my classes. They don't have as many things to choose from as The Nugget does but I'm not spending time to walk all the way up there. I've ordered many items including their burgers, chicken sandwiches, wraps, tenders, burritos, fries. My go to are the breakfast burritos so it's nice that they serve them all day. Chicken tenders are good if you want to get full and not spend much. Same fire the fries. They recently added some vegan options including a burger and tenders that I went ahead and tried and I highly recommend. Especially the tenders. They sell a good selection of common beers to take edge off after a long day of class so that's pleasing. In terms of customer service, orders could take a while to get out a lot of times which is annoying. Located in the lower campus area by the engineer department, The Outpost serves breakfast until 10:45 and afterwords they change to their lunch menu. I like to come here when I'm craving a hotdog, they have a vegetarian hot dog with onions and mustard and side of chips. They also have a generous variety of options for vegetarians. Last time I was there I was able to make it for the breakfast and order pancakes and they were your standard pancakes but tasted good. The Outpost is essentially a second rate Nugget. The food is way overpriced and rather bland. I've tried it all-- the burgers, the pizza, the grilled cheese sandwiches, the fries. A few good things are that it's near the Engineering buildings and their "Threesome Combo" is alright (chicken tenders, fries, onion rings, quesadilla). If you go late in the day and they are out of onion rings, you can get double chicken tenders. Even then, at close to $7, I'd be cautious about grabbing this for a meal on the daily. They've recently begun selling beer and wine, which is a huge plus, but their selection is rather limited. Bud light, coors light, red trolley, and pyramid was all they had on tap last time I checked. They also serve guiness and a few other brands in bottles. The only problem is, it's a pretty well lit area and doesn't have a good, dark, drinking atmosphere. Televisions are a little low, but if you don't feel like walking to upper campus, it's not a bad place to catch a basketball game. read more

The Outpost is conveniently next to my classes, otherwise I would be eating somewhere worth my $6. Not the most noteworthy food, but not so bad either! If I find something that I extremely love, I tend to stick to it. So you'll see me ordering the boneless wings with garlic sauce about 90 percent of the time that I am here. For some reason, I freakin' love it! It comes with a side of celery and carrots too. If I can make it in time for breakfast which ends at 11am, I usually get the skinny burrito because it's equally delicious and it will be make skinnier right?! (just kidding). It comes with a side of spicy salsa. I also order their BLAT wrap and their BLTs (bacon lettuce tomato duh). Two different meals, same deal, both satisfying. The wrap comes with avocado (hence the "A") and a side of chips while the sandwich comes with a pickle. I'm not a fan of buffalo sauce but their Buffalo Chicken Salad is pretty good! Grilled cheese is good too, I think it is overpriced for just cheese and bread though. I guess they throw in a pickle too... It's probably one of the cheapest things you can order. If you're feeling bold and expensive, try the Philly Cheese Steak Sandwich! BIG fan of their sweet potato fries. If you order these fries or the regular, get them both well-done! TRUST! Soggy fries are the worst. And ask your regular fries to be seasoned! Coffee is pretty cheap here! They serve Starbucks coffee. read more

The service is very slow, both during lunch rush hour and throughout the day. Not sure what they do back there, but a pizza can take as long as 10-15 minutes to be ready. Want some fries? Another 10 minutes. The place is serviced by students, so be ready to see some frowns and blank faces while ordering, if they blink, that means they probably heard your order, if you get your receipt you're in business! The only good one there is the manager, things usually move a lot quicker when he's tending the counter. The place has two drink options: medium and small, so be ready to keep walking back for refills (which are free and self-served). The pizza is a bit overpriced, 4 bucks for a personal 6inch , one dollar more will buy you a combo (salad + drink). The fries savoriness varies with the weather, soggy one day crispy the next day. They have a cold counter with food items such as: cake, chips, pre-made sandwiches, etc. The only items I really like are their club sandwiches, which are 5 dollars, alone, extra for a combo. They're usually satisfying, but I swear they use leftover bread because i've gotten several bread varieties in the past. Oh! There's also good internet access, so you can browse and eat. Overall, if you're in lower campus, its much more convenient than the Nugget, UDP and the USU. and definitely much cheaper than the Chartroom.
