The Orchid restaurant from the street.

I had lunch at the Orchid after a business trip to Metuchen. This was my first time at the restaurant and I was happy with my choice of a falafel sandwich that came with delicious French fries. Pickles were placed on the table prior to the meal being served. The falafel and pita were tasty and very filling. The owner is the exclusive caterer at my synagogue, Cong. Sons of Israel in Manalapan, and I've tasted her food at kiddish and functions. I was glad that I finally got to visit the restaurant. It contains a few tables that were covered by linen, a very nice touch.

Its a weird layout, well not weird if you are expecting a deli when you walk in, but we were not, we were thinking it was more cafe like. We almost walked out honestly because you walk into deli cases that looked empty and not well lit, then we saw a few tables in the back so we walked toward the back and we were greeted by a very friendly waitress (her friendliness was the only reason we stayed) as it felt a bit strange in there, and it was so dark...so although a bit chilly out, we asked to sit outside at one of their few sidewalk tables, she accommodated us nicely. We were served yummy homemade pickles..half sours? Yum! We ordered lentil soup, the falafel platter and a tuna, egg and potato salad platter over lettuce. The lentil soup was delicious, but a little more then halfway through I was stabbed in the cheek by what appeared to be a piece of wooden toothpick? WTH?! Maybe it was a stem in with the lentils? I don't know. Waitress apologized profusely and took it off the bill (note to other restaurants..that's the way to handle it)! This is why they are getting four stars and she received a great tip! Falafel were crispy outside and fluffy inside, perfect! Hummus was tasty, but would have preferred the Israeli salad on the side as it made the hummus watery..the pita was amazing..which sucked because we were trying to do a carb free lunch lol, but we had to have some! It was warm and puffed up and so delicious..waitress said they get it from Israel. Salad platter was good, but egg salad was too runny, too much mayo perhaps, but tasty and both platters plentiful enough that neither of us could finish our portion.

The Penn Station. Breaded chicken, hummus, israeli salad, and french fries in a pita.

This restaurant offers a variety of food ranging from normal American to Mediterranean. I have had a few things off the menu and can make some suggestions. The veggie burger is amazing. It's huge and home made and delicious. Their falafel is also home made and very good. For starters, the hummus and baba ganoush are excellent. If you're looking for something badbutittastessogood - the Penn Station. Breaded chicken, fries, hummus, and israeli salad (cucumbers and tomatoes) shoved in a pita. So good it hurts.

A nice pastrami on Rye. The way it was intended to be.

The rice underneath all the meat was also excellent and packed with flavor. Will definitely be back!!

Unfortunately, I was highly disappointed. I know things changed since the previous owner (older Greek man) no longer owned it. He used to stop by the tables and chat with customers and we noticed that the portions had become smaller. This time we came for lunch on a Sunday. Place was kind of empty, with the exception of 2 large tables. We ordered Saganaki and were informed by waitress that they no longer flambéd it table side. We still ordered and it was good although not melted like we remembered. Husband only ordered the lemon soup, which he said was good. My daughter and I both ordered beef and lamb gyros, I ordered it with Greek fries (with the Greek cheese over them) and my daughter ordered hers with lemon potatoes. Both gyros came dry, in hard shaved pieces and I barely ate my fries as they were worse than fast food fries and not the traditional Greek cheese over them. The tzatziki was good, however, my daughter's had a hair in it. The worse part was that when we brought it to the waitresses attention, she was not apologetic or surprised. She just said she would bring a new one. This was unacceptable. To make matters worse, I went to their store next door to get the cheese I could fry at home and their custard dessert; they had neither. What a disappointment to the entire experience. Won't be returning if ever in the area.

It's a tiny, charming Greek spot tucked into Highland Park downtown, with parking so limited you basically need divine intervention... or street parking. Inside, it's cute and very Greek-coded. Vegetarian options? Let's just say... blink and you've seen them all. The hummus platter held its ground, but the Halloumi? I swear it was so rubbery I could hear it squeaking back at me. It felt like chewing a flip-flop in surround sound. Dinner came with exactly three vegetarian choices, all of which looked more like an appetizer sampler trying to pass as a meal. Thankfully, I had great company and a teammate who generously brought wine, which definitely upgraded the experience. Would I return? Personally, no. If you're vegetarian and planning to eat anything beyond hummus, salad, or bread, this place might test your patience. But credit where it's due... their orange cake was delicious and dangerously sweet.
