Happened to come across this cool shop on a recent visit to the area. Not only does the owner carry several nice styles of pre-made men's hats, he is also a serious custom hat maker. The store is a small traditional retail shop; upon walking in the full glass front there are displays to your left and right with the service counter, register and workshop area to the rear. As you make your way to the back of the shop you quickly notice he has dozens upon dozens of different sizes of crown widths and heights and brim width wooden molds - a true custom men's hatter, working in an almost forgotten art form. Mike the owner, is friendly and knowledgable and just a few minutes of conversation with him you know he is serious about his craft (its resurgence in recent years) and building quality headwear. He says he can make hats for anyone but specializes in men's hats which he started by making custom hats for himself. I picked up a new summer brim while there, a true Panama straw made in of course, Panama and at 80$ a bargain. I plan to have a custom built the next time we're in town this fall. The finest hat shop within six counties, possibly the state. (The only hatter I've seen that can compare is Paris Hatters in Austin, Texas.) A fine business in general. Outstanding craftsmanship. The kind of establishment that makes you happy to know can exist in your community. It gives you hope, makes you want to go next door to your local barbershop where you know Joe and Leroy and can sit for an hour or two to hear what's happening from someone with a better grasp on the scene than a bartender and who gives you a haircut instead of a hangover. About the hats. Observe the craftsmanship that goes into a handmade garment. Even if you are not ready yet you will mark this as something to aspire to. You will want to be the person who does own one (or more) of these beauties, to have occasions where you leave the baseball cap on the hook and where something with a brim. Something with style, subtle beautiful grace. Even a bit of elegance. Not so much as to make you a dandy. Just a slightly better dressed version of how you choose to express yourself. This is a charming little hat store! I loved it as soon as I stepped inside. We were looking for a new hat for my husband and we found the perfect hat, and the prices were reasonable. I admit I was afraid to look at the price tags for a moment, when I did was relieved. We got a great hat for $30. The store also has great customer service. Michael Miller makes great fedoras. While visiting my hometown last summer I was very pleased to see a hat store I hadn't noticed before. I walked in and enjoyed a great conversation about hats with the owner, Michael Miller. I learned that the store is also his workshop and I decided to order a fedora. Michael measured my head for size and shape and offered more options than I knew were possible for a hat: the felt, shape, color, ribbon color, bow fold, edging color, interior material and a few more details I can't remember. I thought I knew a lot about hats, but I learned so much more from my fitting. It takes a while to produce a custom fedora and Mike takes orders from all over the map, so I wasn't surprised to hear that mine would take a couple of months. When my silver beaver felt fedora arrived today in So Cal, I eagerly opened the well-packed box and found every detail just as I ordered. Then the moment of truth: how would it fit? Ahhh, like it was made exactly for my 60 cm, oblong head. I wore it around the house for an hour and forgot it was on my head. I can't say enough about the quality of workmanship. $325 plus shipping: very well spent! A shop I visited in Park City, UT last summer had similar quality (cowboy) hats for $350-$500, and they weren't custom built. read more
