So when I was in Norway I heard about a place that was a "50's American-style diner, but in Norway". Most of the time when you're in a city or a country that's much different than your own, you want to experience their food, but I was so intrigued but this concept that I had to check it out for myself. Sure enough, when I walked in I felt like I ended '50s America. This was a legit old-school diner, but with more wooden fixtures than the checkered patterns and plastic type seating that you may be thinking of. It still had the look and feel of a diner, but with a slightly more polished looked. The wait brought over the menu and a small glass of water. If nothing else, come here just to read the menu. It's hysterical. Small jokes within each menu item. I decided to get breakfast here so I got eggs, bacon, toast and French fries because the waiter didn't understand that I wanted home fries, but whatever. It's a potato so I ate it. The eggs were cooked exactly how I asked for them and the bacon was nice and crispy. Looking around, the milkshakes were passing me by constantly and these huge sandwiches. It really made me see how much we, as Americans consume. Their portions were out of this world big if you got a sandwich or something like that. My meal was just the right size, but as most things in Norway, it was expensive so I passed on the milkshake because I'm sure it was out of my budget. A fun experience none the less. I would take friends here the next time Im in town and if I was a local I'd probably be a regular here if I lived nearby. read more

It was good, but it wasn't 400 nok ($45 usd) good. I got a beer, a burger with fries, and a small side of Mac and cheese. I went because I wanted to see Norway's interpretation of a real American diner. It really wasn't bad, but I had to do a triple take when I got the bill. That said, the fries were hot and crispy, the Mac and cheese was delightfully creamy, and the burger was okay. I'd want to try their great-looking breakfast menu, but don't want to go broke for American food on my vacation. read more

Two weeks ago I visited The Nighthawk Dinner for brunch. To start with this is a very popular place for brunch and me and my friends where there when they opened and we went you had to stand in line in order to get in. This is one of the most unique interiors in Oslo. The interior here is American 60's dinner restaurant. From what I've heard the entire Interior was bought and shipped from United States. In order to get it right also the staff that built the interior was from United States that just came in and build it and flew home again. I had the breakfast brunch which where bacon, eggs, sausages, a bowl of spicy chili, fries, bread, fruit and then I added and tried the pancakes with some maple syrup. This is absolutely in the same world class as the best American breakfasts I ate during my road trip in California last summer. I warmly recommend this place for the entire experience. I would like to go here again and try the milkshake and the burger which I've heard a lot of good about. read more

OH MY GOD I LOVE THIS PLACE. Can I please teleport back here right now!? Where to start... Came in on a Friday night and it was super busy. I guess this is the equivalent to an American Diner because they serve American style food. It was SO delicious, I wish they had a twin restaurant in California, more specifically, down the street from my house. I went with my friend and we had to wait at the bar until our table was ready, which was totally fine because I was able to talk to the bartender about what drinks they had. I ordered their prosecco and asked for a small splash of their strawberry vodka they make in house. PEOPLE. This was the best concoction ever. They should add it to their menu. We were seated shortly after. The food was so GOOD. I got the Bleu Burger with their homemade bleu sauce. I was a pig and noticed it didn't have enough on it so I ordered more of it on the side (apparently they charge for that their, back home they do not huh?). The food tasted so fresh, such a change from the US. Michael was our server and he was super nice and attentive. I also got the Oreo Milkshake, AMAZING. TND has been my go to place for burgers a long time now. For the first time I wanted to try something new, and it sure was the last time I'd visit that place for other meals than burgers. I ordered "THE COBB" with grilled chicken breast. I got some cheap salad topped with only two thin layered chicken-slices. They were litteraly a few millimeters thick and it was second to nothing! I called them out on it, but they didn't care. This is more of a complaint to the kitchen than the staff. I want to love The Nighthawks Diner. I have been here a few time and may even try again. I really , really want this to be a place I can visit in Oslo. I was seated, then it took another 15 min to get my order , then another 15 min to get coffee ( one cup of coffee that I had to beg for) then another 15 min to get my breakfast. The breakfast itself was bad, really bad. Uncooked eggs and yucky english muffins. The coffee was old and luke warm. The waitstaff to their credit were completely understaffed and seemed frazzled. American Diners are not only known for their interior but also generous portions. For kr 128 ($15) I was served two dry over scrambled eggs together with 3 burnt pieces of bacon and 1 toast. Not impressive. I also ordered an Americano but was told that this was an American diner, not an Italian café. We desperately wanted breakfast after skipping dinner (too lazy to go back out after a long day of traveling) but we struggled to find anything open on a Sunday morning. After trying a few open coffeeshops but not interested in a light pastry breakfast, we settled on this place. As is everything in Oslo, it is pricey, but unlike other meals we've had, this one wasn't worth it. The table was super sticky and had stuff all on the side so you couldn't lean into the table (my husband went to the restroom to wash his arm after leaning on the table but there was no soap). I ordered a Greek omelet with orange juice and my husband got a yogurt, cinnamon toast, and coffee. My omelet was very runny and I kept crunching into egg shells - not appealing and my oj arrived after we finished our meal. My husband's yogurt came with fruit which was fresh from a can. For $40, I was expecting just a bit more. I would trust the reviews on this place and steer clear. read more

Before I moved to New York this used to be my go to spot for brunch. I might just outgrown the place but for some reason this is no longer a favorite of mine. Although the ambiance is very "American Diner" with the waiters cute uniforms, the interior and the menu - the food and service is not as good as it used to be. It might be that my standards have changed, and that my tastebuds are pickier. The food looks and smells amazing, my personal opinion is that it definitely looks fresher than in the US but who goes to a diner for the freshness. Me for one goes for the greasiness, if not I would go to a juice bar. I feel like maybe the Nighthawk Diner become a little bit to trendy, and that all the hype and long lines have commercialized it to much. However I do still stop by once in a while because it is a cool place and their milkshakes are yummy. Meh. If you're craving a full breakfast with eggs and such, it gets the job done. As Americans we would have preferred hash browns instead of fries for our 'American diner' breakfast. My recommendation for any of the poached egg dishes is to get hollandaise sauce on the side and ask for spinach or greens instead of their bread, which wasn't very good. American or English breakfast is my absolute favorite and after hearing that is a great american diner, we made plans for a long brunch on a Sunday. The line around the restaurant created more hype and excitement. We finally got a table for two and I felt i had been transported into an Archie comics setting. The interior and the milkshakes all looked out of the comics. We ordered Eggs Royale (salmon) , blueberry and choco chip pancakes and a vanilla milkshake. It took an hour for our order to arrive and we sipped on burnt cafe americano refills (free). Eggs Royale was OK because the hollaindaise sauce was thin and runny but the muffins were good. There was a huge serving of fries. YUMMY. How can an american diner go wrong with pancakes???? The texture was firm, hard and not fluffy and they tasted horrible. Too much baking powder and i could taste it with every bite despite dipping in maple syrup. I thought maybe this was a one time thing and the chef? was having a bad day byt it tasted the same when i went for the second (mistake) time. The milkshake was like shaken milk with a few drops of vanilla essence and lots of whipped cream from the spray can. not good. So a lot of people say that for Oslo standards this is great BUT im sorry, not paying so much money for bad pancakes even if this is Oslo. Went here with some coworker for payday last Friday. We all ordered some drinks, I ordered a white Russian which was delicious. Later in the evening I ordered the nachochips and salsa from the "bar snacks" section of the meny. First the waitress didnt even know they had that item in the first place, until I showed her hthe actual menu and she said she would check for me. The chips were good, but the "salsa" was a joke. It was red, but that was all that was salsa-like. It tasted like cucumber and maybe a liiiitle bit of lemon or lime in it. It was just the strangest salsa I've ever come across, So I sent it around the table so the others could try it out, and it's safe to say they weren't exactly fans either. I told the waiter and she brought out guacamole and another dip for me instead which was much better! I also ordered the homemade lemonade, and when it showed up, it had bubbles in it, which I've never come across either. This is supposed to be a real American Diner, and with the tons of lemonade I drank when I was living in FL, it just wasnt doint it for me. The taste was also too mild for my taste. The waitress told me she could make me one without the bubbles, which was 100x better than the first one. The bubbles were gone, and it felt like the taste was more there and more sour than it was to begin with. Several others in my party also ordered food, and theirs were all good. First a confession : this is the first time I've been here. This means that 1) my review is not based on several experiences over a period of months or years (like any proper review), and 2) that I have been missing out on Oslos best burgers and 'shakes for six years!!! I took my son here for a pre-kino treat. We only had an hour and a half and at no time were we stressed or waiting for service. Perfect timing and high attention levels from all staff. A prerequisite for any 5star. We have been to the US quite a lot and always end up in a diner at least every other day when we are there. Our reference for the pinnacle of burger quality is Johnny Rockets, also for the total diner experience. Nighthawk is only just off - but it's probably illegal to serve burgers with that much juicy fat dripping down your chin in Norway! Yum! Nighthawk also make the best shakes I've ever had in Oslo - the cherry chocolate is just gorgeous in every way. We even had time and space for pancakes for dessert. The lightest fluffier most perfect pancakes I can remember, but here I'm slightly outside my zone of expertise. The fact that you can eat some great food and have a drink for about 300,- is also not to be forgotten. This is all packaged in a real diner interior which I'm assuming was shipped over from the States mirror by mirror booth by booth. Details are perfect right down to staff uniforms. (The beer menu is that extensive and missing a few US brews I would have expected) All in all a wonderful bubble of American wholesomeness on a corner in Grunerløkka that has to be experienced. read more

A review by a former server/bartender who has worked at multiple restaurants in Chicago and Virginia: This is not a real diner, period. Every diner I've ever been to, which would probably be 25 or more, has mostly booths and good service. Unfortunately this joint had only a few booths, and at the very back, where my friends and I were seated, were the ODDEST-shaped tables I've ever seen. They were approximately 2 feet wide and 6 feet long with one chair on one side and a booth on the other side. Food: Meanwhile, the most important part - the food. First off, in the U.S. you aren't usually offered just pancakes or just eggs and bacon - the menu will state that with your pancakes you will have eggs and your choice of meat, and with your eggs your choice of meat and pancakes or toast. That one meal comprised of at least 3 items is less than $10 - the individual components are offered at Nighthawk (eggs and pancakes sold separately) were approximately $15-20. I have to say I had never heard of 50% of the food offered on the menu. A fried chicken burger? Cajun chicken tortilla salad? Those aren´t real items - I honestly think the chef just made them up as a joke to combine leftover ingredients (Cajun chicken a la carte). Meanwhile, why wasn´t the fried chicken offered by itself? As a Southerner originally from Mississippi, I don´t get why you´d make a fried chicken burger, but not offer just fried chicken. I ended up having a Nighthawk Combo burger which was pretty good, and ordered fries, which were honestly great. Atmosphere: We had a nice English-speaking waiter from Scotland - I think he was the only native English speaker in the whole joint - Nighthawk is an ´American diner´with no American staff... Meanwhile, our appetizers came out AFTER our entrees, my friend´s side dish was forgotten for 1/2 an hour, and there was a backup server who was quite rude when we asked where they were. She was the girl with the eyebrows wearing the diner-server dress. They generally seemed disorganized and understaffed. When we tried to order cocktails they were out of the half of the ingredients, and our milkshake came in a martini glass... after we saw other customers get milkshakes in regular tall glasses - that means we paid $20 for 1/3 of the ingredients. In American restaurants the bartender and chef will usually keep an 86-list, which is comprised of items they´re running low on, or are simply out of. That allows the server to always know what he can offer his/her guests without having to run back and forth and ask the bartender/chef. Throughout the evening our server was apologetic and at least comped us some desserts after a 45-minute wait on the check. We left full on some okay burgers, but felt that they missed the mark. Verdict: this is simply another badly executed Norwegian attempt at American cooking and service - this place would have 1-2 star reviews if it was in the States, but Norwegians have pretty low standards when it comes to restaurants, and never expect good service. Also, most Norwegians haven´t been to a real American diner, and don´t know any better. Nighthawk is overpriced and overrated. read more

The husband and I went here on the weekend for breakfast, we had heard they were a good spot for "American Breakfast". I can't say I entirely agree, It wasn't really like an American Breakfast... they had the diner vibe down and all but that was about it. It wasn't bad, just not great. We shared the brunch plate that came with eggs, bacon, sausage, a pancake and very strangely chili and fries. I have to say, the chili was super delicious, it reminded me of my moms. I suspect perhaps where Nighthawk Diner shines is on the lunch menu. I saw a couple burgers that went by and they looked really good... plus I wouldn't mind a whole bowl of that chili! Extra points for the name being a reference to my favorite Tom Waits album of all time. Or the famous painting, take your pick. On the plus side, the menu and atmosphere is authentic American, complete with all-day breakfast. But the service is anything but: My order got lost in the kitchen, and it was cold after sitting for half an hour. Back home in the US, this would have meant a free breakfast, but in Norway, businesses would go bankrupt if they took that kind of punishment for incompetence, so a 20% discount was all they gave me. I reached the bottom of the bottomless coffee after 1.5 cups, which is to say that the free refills aren't authentic, either. I recommend sending someone on a vacation to California to find out what customer service in America really looks like. I had the smoked salmon benedict, but cannot truthfully judge the quality of the food, since mine was cold when it arrived, and I really hope that's not the norm. read more

During a visit to Oslo I stayed with a friend in Grünerlokka. Such a nice area, quite hip, up and coming. The Nighthawk Diner is a little like an American diner, offering everything from burgers to pancakes. Upon my visit we decided on pancakes for me, burger for my friend. The burger was great, but even more expensive than everything in Oslo already is. My pancakes were alright but nothing special to be honest. Overall with a coke and a beer, the price was almost €50. The choice of alcoholic drinks is big, so this is definitely a plus of the Nighthawk diner. However, playing was a bit of a problem. First chance, my credit card wasn't going through. So they tried a second time. This time it worked. When I got my credit card bill though it showed the charge twice. I tried calling the diner but there was nothing they were willing to do. Overall, the food is alright, the drinks choice great but I really was not impressed by their handling of the credit card issue! read more

In Phaidon's 'Where Chefs Eat' book that I like to consult before I hit the road, I read about an American diner located in a hip neighbourhood in Oslo that came with praise from the author. I decided to give the Norwegian-American diner a try and give new Nordic cuisine a break. On the main tram street of Oslo's Grünerløkka neighbourhood, and located within walking distance from Tim Wendelboe's scrumptious coffee shop (part of Oslo tourism these days) is the Nighthawk Diner. I kid you not, stepping inside the Nighthawk Diner was like crossing the Atlantic Ocean back into America. They had the interior spot on! The tiled floor restaurant, situated in a corner property includes a smaller front section with yellow leather bar seating, a larger dining area in the back with booths and outdoor patio seating. This place was packed with locals waiting for their milkshakes, burgers, salads, eggs, sandwiches and pie to be served by waiters and waitresses dressed in diner attire. My tuna salad with whole wheat toast was so good, I returned again the next morning and waited in line for nearly 40 minutes so I could have a plate of blueberry pancakes that went by over my head the night before. My dining partner opted for the pulled pork and was equally satisfied with the tangy-sweet marinade on the meat. Aside from the good food, I liked that The Nighthawk Diner made an effort to call attention to their intentions of working towards becoming a 100% organic diner and shared the names of their suppliers. They get their organic beef from Halstenov farm. By diner standards, do not expect this to be a cheap meal. I repeat: Nothing is cheap in Oslo, not even a meal at a diner. As long as you can put 'affordable meal' out of your mind when eating in this city and block out the temptation to compare the cost of a plate of pancakes in the US with the cost of your blueberry stack in Oslo, you will more than enjoy your meal here. The interior is amazing but don't come here for the breakfast, milkshake or french fries. The breakfasts are made from a Norwegian perspective on American food. Nothing inventive just doing their best to get it right. Not worth my money. The milkshakes are thin and runny and everytime I eat fries there, it looks like they scraped the leftovers together and i only get tiny pieces. Bummer. On a postitive note, they have lots of great beer and a super tastey Pulled Pork Sandwich. It's nice as well to get a bottomless mug of coffee and I love the uniforms. Miserable attempt at a Philly cheese steak. Sorry guys, no peppers, no melted cheese incorporated into the meat. Beef was not even sliced - thick and chewy fillet on a burger bun. I have had your burgers and milkshakes in the past and they are excellent, but either look into what a Philly cheese steak is or take it off the menu. You should be ashamed of yourself for trying to pass this off as a Philly cheese steak. Oslo really needs an American style diner that offers the real deal. read more

We are visiting from NY and decided to give this place a try after reading great reviews and having it recommended to us by locals. Unfortunately our high expectations were not met. We asked our waitress for three waters and two coffees and waited about 20 minutes before asking a bus boy if he would get them for us. The bus boy was very friendly and got us our waters and coffees quickly. Our waitress was not friendly and we ordered both chili fries and chili con carne and the waitress said that they "didn't have the meat". I ended up ordering the chicken sandwich and my friends ordered the nighthawk brunch I believe it was called. After waiting for quite a while (which would have been acceptable given how busy the restaurant was) our food came out. However, it wasn't acceptable because the brunch platters were both cold- the eggs were cold, the sausage was cold, and the "toast" was untoasted, cold bread. My friends both asked for cheddar with their eggs and a slice of cold cheese just sat on top of their eggs. Horrible presentation. My "Cajun" style grilled chicken burger tasted like an overseasoned cold taco and was inedible (and pricey). I am unsure if the kitchen is to blame or if it was our inattentive and forgetful waitress, but saying the food was awful is an understatement. I'm a big big fan of the Nighthawk. Anytime I'm in the neighborhood I'm drawn like a moth to a flame. They serve probably the best onion rings I've had in the city. I've never been disappointed with the food or the service here. I would highly recommend ordering a White Russian milkshake, it's not on the menu but it's a must have. Whenever I'm missing the ol' USA a stop in at the nighthawk cheers me right up. Go, you won't regret it but be prepared to wait this place fills up! read more
