    Fried chicken arrives in Oslo.
    Aree W.

The lack of KFC in Scandinavia had left a hole in the food scene, so when Lucky Bird established the first good fried chicken restaurant in town, a small but dedicated minority of Oslo people rejoiced like it's their own 17th May. See, Norwegians would -sometimes- enjoy a greasy fried chicken, but it's just another food. In other parts of the world, it's an integral part of their growing up. Boys become men from fried chicken. Anyway, fried chicken ranting aside, on to the restaurant - CHICKEN (YES!). Lucky Bird serves only Chicken, Wings and Ribs, but the reason you're here is fried chicken. And they are a DELIGHT! Yummy, spiced, moist tenders, and the crunchy coating is perfect. Their fried chicken takes me back to North Carolina (it tastes closer to Southern-style chicken in an American diner than to KFC). The chicken is a bit "Disneyfied" - instead of finger-lickin'-good scratching meat off a greasy carcass, the chicken is tidy boneless tenders. It's a bit more fine-dining than your regular fried chicken joint. The chicken comes with a smoky pineapple sauce which is surprisingly delicious for the first 2 pieces of chicken, though after that it becomes overwhelmingly sweet. One could order 3 alternative sauces with a surcharge. It's not much, but it would have been nicer if there were more free choices. SIDES. You should order for the table, family dinner style: sweet potato fries, 'slaw, mac & cheese, green beans, collard greens, dirty rice.. It all sounds good, but this is actually where they fall short - the sides aren't anything special. The sweet potato fries is worth it, but the cornbread is so dense and tasteless and the green beans are something you could easily stir up at home. The buffalo wings are decent, but you can get wings in many places. A good meal here for 2 persons is 4-6 chicken and 2 shared side orders. My best advice is to bulk up on the fried chicken order and be minimal on the side orders. ATMOSPHERE. Cozy Americana decor with country rock music, waitresses in checkered shirts, red sofas gives you an American diner feel with some hipsterness (Kombucha tea? Root beer, my friend! :)). Service was aggrandizingly slow for an empty restaurant. It's a clever setup, but it's still a Norwegian restaurant recreating America. I don't think that's bad, but you won't be getting the American "What'll it be, Honey" treatment from ultra-friendly waitresses (if that's you're looking for). For that you could try Cafe Fedora for instance. What Lucky Bird is, and it's nothing to sneeze at, is a GREAT chicken place that the city desperately needs.

Mmm buy two small dishes and share.

The restaurant has a hipster feel to it, furnished simply but in an original way. It actually works! It somehow reminded me of Bubba Gump Restaurants with the wooden industrial interior with cool pictures on the walls. So, how is customer service?First of all, I am not easy to satisfy when it comes to customer service as I travel to the US frequently and am used to excellent service. I sort of expect to be asked if I want more to drink and how the food tastes. I also expect to be waited soon after having been seated. My first impression is not great regarding the waiters' job as it took some time before she asked if we wanted to order and then left and never got back to us. Later, we had to ask twice for the check. The place was not full. That said, I guess it takes time to get everything tip top and that the waiters are more observant next time I visit. The food? I am positively surprised! Lots of food and crispy well tasting chicken. The sauces were good and I will say Nandos no longer is my favorite chicken joint. The price was also reasonable. Only minus are the beer prices. So, to summarize ; great interior, great food, but work on the waiter part - do it the American way! PS will come back already tomorrow! PS second time around we had to wait a while before food was served, however customer service had improved slightly.

The mean fell off the bone here. Marinated in a Jack Daniels-style BBQ sauce. Best spare ribs I have tasted in Oslo!

Great place for a real southern American deepfried, greasy bite! The specialties are fried chicken (in either big pieces, or smaller wings) and spare ribs. I can recommend taking small portions of each, for variety! The spare ribs had excellent juicy meat dropping off the bone with a great marinade (from mild to very spicy - I chose medium which was just perfect). The fried chicken was absolutely delicious too: Crusty outside and soft and juicy inside. What Lucky Bird offers is limited, but the quality is high. That with a cool interior and great service make this place a winner :)

Excellent fried chicken and sweet potato fries!!! The chicken breast is sooo tender and juicy. I am a person who hate chicken breast but i love this one.

The house iced tea was very good! (Unlock on yelp by checking in). I would have like a boneless chicken option but thats just me. My server did graciously try to intrepret most of the menu for me however did forget to bring me silverware. Mac n' chz was good and filling, had broccoli and turkey sausage. Side salad could have included a couple more veggies besides tomatoes. Its in the mathallen area so there are many food options!

We visited Lucky Bird yesterday for lunch, we were in the mood for some chicken and chicken we got! We showed up right after opening on a Sunday, we planned this purposefully because I really wanted chicken and waffles which they only service for brunch. It was pretty dead, maybe one other couple in the house, but by the time we left it was hoppin'. We started with a couple of beers, I can't say their draft selection is very interesting, pretty mainstream, but they do offer a larger pour for like NOK85. That's cool and all but I'd rather pay that price for an excellent beer at a smaller size. To the food! I got the chicken and waffles, you can choose regular, bacon or broccoli waffle. I still can't envision the appeal of a broccoli waffle, maybe it's the American in me... speaking of, of course I chose bacon! The man ordered the spicy chicken sandwich with sweet potato fries. Everything was good, not amazing, but good, and the portions very generous. The waffle was done right, nice and crispy which I really appreciate... I hate a floppy waffle! The chicken was juicy, but the breading fell off which is a bummer. The sauce that came with my chicken was smoky and sweet and delicious, my husband stole it from me for his sandwich because his was lacking in flavor and spice, no spice at all, which is surprising for a "spicy" chicken sandwich. All in all our visit was good. Service after our meal was very slow, it took forever for us to get the check. I think we will go back for dinner and try some mashed potatoes and pecan pie!

Fried chicken, great dipping sauce! Chicken tasted fresh and really good, not dry! Lands heavy in stomach!

Great food, great service - and they serve fresh, delicious hoppy beer. Had the fried chicken and waffle, they moved this to the standard menu. This place makes me happy.

Been here a couple times and it's been so good every time! The food, the service, the atmosphere was all great! I'd gladly come back here, the ice tea was delish and the pickle shots are a must have! Seriously have a pickle shot, last time I was there I had three and they we're so awesome!

Knowing that the menu had been greatly reduced since the owners of Cafe Fedora left (maybe not left, but aren't there to supervise the kitchen), I tried to persuade my friend to go somewhere else. My persuasion did not work. So I show up first as I live the closest. We had made reservations for 8pm, however, for some reason, they had written down 10pm. The place was empty either way, so it didn't turn out to be an issue, but could have been annoying if it had since we were 8 people. I got a quesadilla with homemade salsa. The rest got chicken burritos. I am not sure how the burritos were, but I was not impressed with the quesadilla. However, it is hard to make a quesadilla to a southern California girl's standards if all you have is Norwegian products to work with, so I give a little slack. The salsa was excellent though and saved the quesadilla from being thrown out. As for the bar part, I wouldn't come here again. The bar tender was a complete ditz. She is the one that wrote down that our reservation was for 10pm. "Oh, well I must have forgot" was her response when I told her it was supposed to be at 8pm. Some of the Americans had to explain the type of beer they wanted even though it was on the menu and with the atmosphere, you think you would be going to a cheaper bar. However, the prices are more than average for an equivalent bar. I once came here for breakfast when Cafe Fedora was closed and they wanted kr 70 for an orange juice. We aren't even talking fresh squeezed quality. It was the type that you buy on a store shelf NOT in the refrigerator section. Put the quality of the food they currently serve here, the price, and the atmosphere together, and I will definitely not be returning. Such a shame!

Most of the time when you're in a city or a country that's much different than your own, you want to experience their food, but I was so intrigued but this concept that I had to check it out for myself. Sure enough, when I walked in I felt like I ended '50s America. This was a legit old-school diner, but with more wooden fixtures than the checkered patterns and plastic type seating that you may be thinking of. It still had the look and feel of a diner, but with a slightly more polished looked. The wait brought over the menu and a small glass of water. If nothing else, come here just to read the menu. It's hysterical. Small jokes within each menu item. I decided to get breakfast here so I got eggs, bacon, toast and French fries because the waiter didn't understand that I wanted home fries, but whatever. It's a potato so I ate it. The eggs were cooked exactly how I asked for them and the bacon was nice and crispy. Looking around, the milkshakes were passing me by constantly and these huge sandwiches. It really made me see how much we, as Americans consume. Their portions were out of this world big if you got a sandwich or something like that. My meal was just the right size, but as most things in Norway, it was expensive so I passed on the milkshake because I'm sure it was out of my budget. A fun experience none the less. I would take friends here the next time Im in town and if I was a local I'd probably be a regular here if I lived nearby.

Not what I hoped for…read more I was visiting Oslo from the USA and thought it might be cool to check out an "American" BBQ joint on the 4th of July. WDS makes a big deal on their website about making reservations and what it serves large groups as the try to have enough cooked meat on hand. I was traveling solo so I emailed the week before to make sure I could get a table- no problem they said. When I got there the had to check if seating was available though the restaurant was half full at best. Service - The guys handling the seating sounded American but were not particularly friendly or welcoming. I'm pretty sure by my voice and appearance they knew I was from the States, but made no comment. My actual waiter was fine - friendly and attentive. Food- Shame on me for ordering a burger at a BBQ place- should have had the brisket. Still this smoked burger was undercooked for my liking and not particularly flavorful. Maybe their other barbecued meats are phenomenal-don't know. They promote themselves as a southern bbq experience-one wall is covered with a mural of the USA south, highlighting the regional bbq's. I have had better food and hospitality at dozens of bbq joints throughout the South. I accept part of the blame as maybe my expectations were too high. Just feels like an opportunity missed. All the local diners seemed to be enjoying themselves so they must be doing something right?

However, the great food cannot make up for the lousy service I seem to get every time I am here. The worst was a few months ago for my boyfriend's 30th birthday. It was supposed to be a surprise dinner with all of his friends. I made reservations 2 weeks in advanced online. I then called the day before the dinner to confirm the reservations. Apparently I talked to the cook and he said that my reservation looked fine. He repeated how many people the reservation was for, my name, and at what time so all seemed fine. My boyfriend's friends showed up to the restaurant before me and called me to say they did not have the reservations. When I arrived a few minutes later they tried to tell me that the cook had told me to call back in a few minutes when I talked to him on the phone the day before. I explained to them how if that were the case I obviously would have called back because of the importance of the reservations. They tried to reserve us a table for the next evening, but obviously that wouldnt work. The great thing about being an American in Norway is Norwegians are quickly intimidated when we raise our voice. As soon as I raised my voice and let them know how pissed I was, we were given a table. It was not quite big enough for all of us, but we were at least seated. The service after that was still awful. I would have thought it was because I raised my voice at them, but having been here several times before that, I wouldnt have expected the service to be anything but lousy and if it werent for my boyfriend being Norwegian and used to bad service, I would never go back, but unfortunately, he loves the place.
