Sorry Texas, Oslo is gunning for you. Do what I did and just get the Family Pickins, which gives you a little nibble of everything. Bbq done right. A meat lover's heaven

Way Down South has become one of my favorite places to eat in Oslo. It's one of a kind, serves a hella good BBQ and they won't let you down on the booze-side of things. Before they moved to their new location it was little too crowded at times, but this little location is just perfect. It's intimate, rustic and casual. Works wonderfully for a date, a friendly lunch or simply to indulge solo. I'd do it all! I think the BBQ standards of Norway (as Jamie R. already pointed out) are quite low to begin with and expectations virtually non-existent, but that does not mean WDS won't deliver. Because believe me...they sure as hell do! The chicken is as tender as a virgin's butt, and the BBQ sauce leaves a sweet tingle in your mouth. I honestly cannot recommend only one dish, as they're all fantastic. The fried chicken, beef brisket, pulled pork and pork ribs. The sides create a well-rounded balance to the otherwise very meaty mains. Here I for sure recommend going with the corn bread and cole slaw! The cornbread is so mouth watering you won't believe it! But how much food is enough though? If you're two people, I recommend the following: 1 main dish (they are big and filling) and 3 side dishes. Unless you're 2 x male and starving ;) The prices are a little stiff, so if you're on a splurge, just cut the alcohol. I do however reeeally think you should get the southern iced tea (with the Bourbon!).

If I was stuck on desert island and could only choose 3 things to take with me it would be water, my Netflix subscription and without a doubt the brisket at Way Down South in Oslo. It's not an exaggeration to say that I am a changed person after ordering the Family Pickins' at this epic new restaurant. Having had BBQ in Texas, I had no idea that a bunch of Aussie chefs living in Oslo could not only replicate the same Bbq quality from the South but they could do it better. A lot better! Everything on the menu is worthy of its own cult status (especially the brisket). But I feel it is my moral duty to highlight what could be the worlds greatest cornbread. By definition, cornbread is usually dry, flavorless and crumbly. But this luscious piece of heaven topped with whipped honey butter was a spiritual experience. I left my body and may have found my spirit animal and that animal may be (edit : definitely is) the cornbread at Way Down South . To wash it all down they have quality beer on tap and amazing experimental cocktails! Warning though, if you're looking for a buzz that might be a struggle with half a cow and 3 - 12 orders of life changing cornbread in your stomach ( just me?) To summarize. Start fasting for this all star restaurant , leave wherever you are and go and get "some south in ya mouth"!

The family platter, gives you every meat to try and 5 sides. Soooo good!

If 10 stars were available Way Down South would get all 10, seriously. Being from the states, and both of us having at some time lived in the "South" we weren't really expecting much in terms of bbq in Norway. What we found was a diamond in the rough, a place that does better bbq that many places we've dined in the States and we unanimously voted that it's been our favorite meal in Norway yet. We made reservations through yelp, and I am glad we did, it was a Saturday night and quite busy. When we arrived our table was waiting for us and we were promptly greeted and seated. I can't recall our waitresses name but she was really nice and responsive. There were a couple of gentleman too who checked on us here and there too. We had planned on not getting drinks, they're just so expensive out, but I caved and ordered the whisky sour when I saw it was made the traditional way, with egg whites. The hubby ordered a beer, which was quite large and a good bargain. The whisky sour was very good, I would have liked more whisky but wasn't expecting a heavy pour since their measured here. So to the food! We decided to go big and order the family platter so that we could have a taste of each meat they offer and several of the sides. It was like 339 kr a person, not cheap, but let me tell you, you get what you pay for. We had left overs to take home that fed us another meal. It was so fun trying everything and now we know what our favorites are. The meat selection was pulled pork, chicken wings, pork ribs, spicy bbq chicken, and jalapeno sausage. All were really really good, the pork rib perhaps was a bit on the salty side but tasty. Our favorite was the bbq spicy chicken, it was amazing! What I really enjoyed was the bbq flavors, which weren't overpowered by smoke or sauces. The table had a bbq sauce and jalapeno sauce that you could put on your meat yourself. The bbq sauce tasted a bit commercial, I suspect it's not made in house, but the jalapeno sauce was totally legit. The sides that came were the mac n cheese, coleslaw, corn bread, bbq beans and corn on the cob. I am a self proclaimed mac n cheese expert and this version didn't disappoint. It's kind of the the right now to put a ton of cracker or bread crumbs on top of mac n cheese, and I HATE that! Way Down South only put a few little sprinkles, it was perfectly cheesy and ooey gooey. The cornbread was moist, slightly sweet and very tasty, I am a fan. The coleslaw was well dressed, not too dry and had a nice vinegar bite since it is Carolina style which is mustard based. The bbq beans were ok, the beans were underdone and sightly crunchy which I didn't enjoy and finally the corn on the cob.... well corn here in Norway is just lame, it can't hold a candle to fresh picked and husked summer corn, nothing can compare, but it was fine for what you can get in Norway. We were wayyyyyyy too full for desert, which was a bit sad because what they offered that day sounded really good. We definitely will return soon, I am craving that bbq spicy chicken and mac n cheese and corn bread! Those three would def be a go to for me on future visits. I suggest you start with those unless you are brave enough to spring for the platter!

Sooooooo yummy!!!! We loved it, the short rib was soooo good. I don't have much more to say than if you like bbq and are in Oslo, you have to stop by here. There is nothing else like it in the area.

That little ball was filled with some sort of hazelnut cream that should be ilegal because it could easily cause addiction...

I cannot speak for the BBQ because I don't eat meat which makes the menu options limited to the veggie burger with Portobello which is quite good. The mac and cheese is nice as well. The milkshakes are also great but, sometimes, it's a bit of an overkill with the sugar. Depending on the flavor, it can go from yum yum to cavity control. I've had the one with coconut and the one with brownie that was SO sweet it was almost inedible. So, that being said, if you LOVE sugar, the freakshake is the thing for you.

Truly an American BBQ experience! Beef briskets just melted in my mouth. A bit dry for their biscuits, but other than that, all are delicious!

Had the chicken and waffles and a "blueberry marshmallow donut freak shake" for brunch. Both were delicious! The shake wasn't too sweet which I was happy about. It was perfect to share between two people.

Rude! We were going to eat at this restaurant but they were really rude, so we decided to go elsewhere. They need to work on customer service. I liked the name of the restaurant. But they are obviously not from the south.

The chicken is breed the old fashion way- Breath of fresh air, fresh oat, wheat and corn and this combination makes the meat so juicy and tender. The burger itself is boneless (they remove bones), coleslaw, bbq sauce and a good dressing on top of a amazingly good bun. The bun actually makes the whole difference. It's so moist and tasty when you let the burger sit for a minute(if you got the patience to wait), it just suck up all of the good dressing and bbq sauce and that combined with the juicy chicken just makes it even better. I tend to go for the burger whenever I'm down at the local football pub watching a game and I combine this meal with a Brooklyn Lager. Good taste combined. The service is also great. No mocking around. Quick and done. Since they started up their local shoppe at Mathallen, the price has risen from a comfortable 60NOK to 90NOK. I personally think that's a little steep but I can't resist it. It's worth it. They also got a good chicken sandwich, but I've never eaten it. (Never change a winning team) but I've heard it's also very good. It's not only burgers and sandwiches at Stangeriet, they also sell wings, thighs and whole chickens. It's definitely worth a try and a chicken for sunday supper is a winner.

[[UPDATED REVIEW: September 2022]]…read more 'Ello chaps! Return trip a few years later to a hip "Southern American" restaurant in the artsy district of Oslo, a short bus ride (or even walk) from downtown. As someone from the southern United States, where folks are judged on their fried chicken and BBQ, Lucky Bird hits it out of the park. Simply some of the BEST fried chicken I've ever had -- ANY WHERE. The chicken was perfectly moist, and the breading was crispy without feeling heavy or overly oily. The creamed corn and mashed potatoes were top notch. The only complaint about Lucky Bird is that there weren't more locations around Oslo. This is certainly a gem hiding in plain site. On the return trip the fried chicken was still living up to the standard. Delicious. Overall the sides can really put a dent in your wallet, so you want to be careful with your order. Oh, and the tea - don't order it if you're expecting a traditional southern American sweet tea. Their tea is not that. It's a mix of tea and lemonade it tasted like. This was also one of the few restaurants in Norway we found to have full service (meaning a server took your order) Overall I give Lucky Bird five stars out of five.

You should come here for THE best breakfast buffet in town!…read more I've had the breakfast here at Grilleriet during my last three stays at the Hotel Folketeateret next door (it's included in the room rate) and in fact the breakfast is the reason why I'm not bothering to try out any other hotels in Oslo - it's the most convincing argument...ever! What's so great about it? - Well, for one it is the sheer amount of variety that makes this breakfast buffet so good. - You could seriously walk up an appetite by simply strolling along it from one end to the other: there's many different kinds of breads - flat breads, rye breads, crunchy breads; then there's a plenty of different cheeses (I love the cumin-flavoured one) and also a nice assortment of cold cuts (such as hams & salamis). Then there's different kinds of smoked or marinated fish, coming with all sorts of condiments. The warm dishes should be mentioned as well: fried or scrambled eggs and a station where you can self-assemble your omelet . The obligatory bacon is there too, but also sausage, some sort of warm liver paté and...very randomly...a warm aubergine salad. The space itself is also fantastic: it's a vast room, but it feels so comfortable and cozy in there that I could hang out there forever. They have a nice mix of small, larger and huge communal tables. (I actually tend to spend my mornings here and set up my computer on one of the communal tables - the hustle and bustle makes my creative juices flow so nicely ;-) As for lunch and dinner, I cannot say much, but I was here with my Norwegian colleague the other day and she said that she had a terrific dinner here as well. Apparently they put chairs around the open kitchen bar and folks can thus watch the chefs preparing the food while eating and chatting. Go, Grilleriet, go!

It irks me because I make reservations specifically so I do not have to wait for a table. This place has no good waiting area either, so you just stand around like a fool trying not to get in anyone's way. Also, when we walked in, it was hard to breathe. I am not sure if the place always smells of oversmoked meats or if they had an issue the evening we were there, but wow, the smell was intense. I had gotten used to the smell by the time we were finally seated. Our server was a little slow, both with service and in the head, but he seemed to try his best with what he was given. All of the above is why I deducted a star, which should tell you how fricken awesome the food was since I typically rate a place quite low if the service wasn't up to par. Now onto the good part: The words that came out of my mouth after the first bite of my steak were something like "now I know why people spend so much money on good food." I am pretty sure I repeated this several times. It was the best steak I had ever had. It was cooked to perfection and so tender I cut through it like it was warm butter (cold butter is not easy to cut through). It is so good it forces you to eat slow because you dread the second that taste is not in your mouth. There were other things on my plate too. There was some type of glazed onion and some potato thing (yes, I am that fancy) and both were quite good, but seriously, don't waste your time with these extras if you get full fast like I do. There are not many places that have service that irks me that can make up for with their food, but Grilleriet definitely did. I would let them verbally abuse me if it meant I got to eat that steak again.
