You should come here for THE best breakfast buffet in town! I've had the breakfast here at Grilleriet during my last three stays at the Hotel Folketeateret next door (it's included in the room rate) and in fact the breakfast is the reason why I'm not bothering to try out any other hotels in Oslo - it's the most convincing argument...ever! What's so great about it? - Well, for one it is the sheer amount of variety that makes this breakfast buffet so good. - You could seriously walk up an appetite by simply strolling along it from one end to the other: there's many different kinds of breads - flat breads, rye breads, crunchy breads; then there's a plenty of different cheeses (I love the cumin-flavoured one) and also a nice assortment of cold cuts (such as hams & salamis). Then there's different kinds of smoked or marinated fish, coming with all sorts of condiments. The warm dishes should be mentioned as well: fried or scrambled eggs and a station where you can self-assemble your omelet . The obligatory bacon is there too, but also sausage, some sort of warm liver paté and...very randomly...a warm aubergine salad. The space itself is also fantastic: it's a vast room, but it feels so comfortable and cozy in there that I could hang out there forever. They have a nice mix of small, larger and huge communal tables. (I actually tend to spend my mornings here and set up my computer on one of the communal tables - the hustle and bustle makes my creative juices flow so nicely ;-) As for lunch and dinner, I cannot say much, but I was here with my Norwegian colleague the other day and she said that she had a terrific dinner here as well. We had reservations for 5pm. We were not greeted by anyone until 5:05 and were not seated until 5:20. It irks me because I make reservations specifically so I do not have to wait for a table. This place has no good waiting area either, so you just stand around like a fool trying not to get in anyone's way. Also, when we walked in, it was hard to breathe. I am not sure if the place always smells of oversmoked meats or if they had an issue the evening we were there, but wow, the smell was intense. I had gotten used to the smell by the time we were finally seated. Our server was a little slow, both with service and in the head, but he seemed to try his best with what he was given. All of the above is why I deducted a star, which should tell you how fricken awesome the food was since I typically rate a place quite low if the service wasn't up to par. Now onto the good part: The words that came out of my mouth after the first bite of my steak were something like "now I know why people spend so much money on good food." I am pretty sure I repeated this several times. It was the best steak I had ever had. It was cooked to perfection and so tender I cut through it like it was warm butter (cold butter is not easy to cut through). It is so good it forces you to eat slow because you dread the second that taste is not in your mouth. There were other things on my plate too. There was some type of glazed onion and some potato thing (yes, I am that fancy) and both were quite good, but seriously, don't waste your time with these extras if you get full fast like I do. There are not many places that have service that irks me that can make up for with their food, but Grilleriet definitely did. This is one of the more expensive places, and I probably would not have been here if it wasn't for my friend (-who booked here!). We ordered the 3-meal offer with the matching "3 wine package". Had a (sushi like) 1st meal, a main meal with meat, and some pavlova-like dessert. Both meals was D-E-L-I-C-I-O-U-S , with a combination of tastes that I've never tried before. The meat based main meal absolutely "blew me off" with the most tender beef ever!!!!! The dessert was sweet and ok, but nothing further (-I prefere something with chocolate, and coffee before sweet wine). Hands down the best meal I've eaten in Oslo. Grilleriet doesn't just provide you with food, it provides you with a unique Nordic dining experience you're not soon to forget. Tucked inside Folketeaterpassasasjen, we were able to get a table immediately upon our arrival however the restaurant quickly filled up shortly after (around 8pm). While it initially took some time for our table to be acknowledged, our server, Fjordor was beyond amazing. A genuinely nice guy with a passion for the food at Grilleriet, Fjordor made sure we had an excellent evening. We opted for the 4 course chef's menu which consisted of a scallop starter, entree of venison, Spanish goat cheese plate and a strawberry cheesecake dessert. We were also given a snack sampler which included the infamous dill popcorn, duck, and crispy pork puffs with an aioli dipping sauce. Each dish better than the last, I finished the meal completely stuffed and satisfied. I was thoroughly amazed with how the chefs at Grilleriet masterfully combined classic and modern cooking techniques to marry strong unique flavors into harmonized dishes. The smell of grill and charcoal that fills this spacious restaurant is a real mood setter for what's to come. My boyfriend and I ordered the prime rib which was served on a small table friendly charcoal grill to keep the food hot. With 2 lb meat to share, the waiter seemed quite surpriset that we finished it all, and even asked for desserts. Anyway, the food was delicious, the service was swift and friendly without feeling pushy or stressful, which can be a problem in many norwegian restaurants. You know the "thanks for coming, but now it's time you left" smile often given by waiters? Not at Grilleriet. We actually had our table for three full hours. Grilleriet has a lovely ambience, and the floor plan is quite spacious so you're not bumping elbows with the other guests or overhearing conversations not meant for you. The menu is perhaps a bit limited, but after all, you're here for the grilled beef, so no worries there. Better to be superb at a few dishes than mediocre at a vast menu selection, I say. And if beef is not your thing, there's always the grilled fish to be had! ...and now I'm fat. Great. read more

This was our second visit in a week. That is how great this place is. The food is plated perfectly and the taste is delicious. To top it all off, the service was awesome and staff so friendly. If I ever visit Oslo again, I will be back to this restaurant. read more

Visited Grilleriet last week with my mother and niece - we all thought the food and service were amazing. Our eating there was purely coincidental - we stopped by on our way back from a show, and even though it was completely full we got a table that someone else had cancelled. The restaurant is quite large, but has an extensive bar and an open kitchen where you can see the team working, so it feels pretty "happening" and exciting. The staff were very friendly - none of the arrogant attitude that one often finds at other top restaurants around the world at all. We all opted for the dinner menu special - a three course menu with sea-shells, cod, and incredibly delicious desert. Everything was cooked to perfection (crispy was just right and crispy, fish was neither under-nor overcooked, with wonderful seasoning, the desert was to die for and completely irresistible), and the presentation was very elegant, even though the table setting itself was quite simple. Our order arrived quickly, and the waiter was just great - he even gave my 72-year old mother a nice hug at the end of the evening. If you're in Oslo, you've really got to go to "Grilleriet". As an aside - we did have to wait a few minutes since we didn't have a reservation - this was not an issue, as there is a large bar in the restaurant. The food was tasty, but it was not what we ordered. This was a company outing so we had preordered and somehow all our info was lost in cyberspace. One guest in our company was allergic to paprika and chili - she was served chorizo despite the 'allergy notification card' that was placed in front of her seat. Our booking was for 6pm and at 7:30 the main course was still nowhere to be seen. When it arrived the lamb was of varying quality, to say the least. Three members of our company were food poisoned. Had the reindeer. It was pretty much fuckn amazing. And the slab of bacon, was the best piece of bacon that has ever touched my mouth. Crap management. We walked in before 7 pm to find an empty restaurant with no reservations waiting to check in. Would not seat us until 8 pm for lack of reservation. Even with entire restaurant EMPTY. Every f'ing seat. Not worth the trouble. There are too many great restaurants in Oslo to put up with this attitude. They'll be gone in a year unless they start appreciating the diners. Hostess was all too happy to send us away instead of finding a solution. It is management's fault, not hers. Nice looking place... was going on a meeting in Oslo but came in very early with the train so I decided to have a good long breakfast. Was one of the first guests to the buffet. Some tables were dirty from the night before... ring marks after a sticky drink, beer etc of course it can happen... but very crucial move to just light a candle and leave the tables dirty for the guests... buffet was lovely until I found a black hair in the middle of my scrambled eggs... went to the chef politely and showed him what I found... the reactions were "it wasn't me, it must be someone else on the staff..." and I said "OK, but now you know and it was in the scrambled eggs..." this was around 07:00... I was seated around the warm part of the buffet until 09:40. Two things, number one: I did not get an apology... number two: ...they left the hairy scrambled eggs in the buffet... I don't lose my appetite often... but this morning... drank coffee and ate a banana for the rest of my waiting time... read more
