Jamie W. and I finally arrived in Oslo at close to 10PM after a six-hour train ride from deep in the fjord country. After we checked into our hotel, we went on the hunt for a late dinner. However, we had no luck finding a suitable restaurant still serving food after 10PM. I refused to patronize a McDonald's not because I'm a food snob but... OK, maybe I am a snob, but when we accidentally came upon this Middle Eastern kebab grill, we were game. We were also desperate at this point in the evening. There was a long horizontal picture menu, so we just ordered off of it at the counter. When they were ready to make our orders, one of the staff motioned us over and asked us which fillings and toppings we wanted. We just kept modding every time he scooped anything, which was why our meals looked rather gluttonous. I went for the 155 NOK Lamb Kebab Box which was quite a pile of grilled lamb with lettuce, cucumber slices, beets, jalapeños, yogurt sauce, and housemade pita bread (photo: https://bit.ly/3vLcrWl). Jamie ordered the 120 NOK Lamb Kebab Pita which was quite an overstuffed handful with the same ingredients as my box plus corn kernels and hummus (photo: https://bit.ly/3A2HVcZ). Even though they were messy and oversauced, the hastily assembled food certainly filled our bellies, and for Norway, they were reasonably priced. Mine was almost $16, and Jamie's pita was around $12.25. At that late hour, most of the customers were either friends of the owner or drunk Scandinavians. And there was us. It isn't easy to find cheap food with American portions in Norway, but the general rule of thumb is that middle eastern food is mostly promising in that aspect just like how Mexican food is in America - delicious and affordable! I love middle eastern food, their kabobs, grilled meats, rice, spices, special sauces, etc. This place makes good food with big portions! Not only that, the main reason we came here was the early opening hours compared to the common hours in Oslo. We had a hard time looking for a place to eat in the morning before our train ride, and this place was one of the very very few choices we had. The shop just opened when we got there. The guy wasn't the friendliest but at least he gave us food that was prepared hot and fresh. The prices were affordable and it was nice to sit outside looking out onto the busy streets. I have to say that I am HUGE on lamb shawarma. Everywhere I go, if there is a delicious hunk of beef/lamb, I am more than likely to grab a plate of it and rave as much as I can. Now - this place from the outside didn't look like much. It in fact seemed like your average eatery, but inside? oh boy...was I NOT prepared for quite possibly the best lamb I have ever had. Being from NYC, I've had quite the variety of kebab, but Carmel Grill just jumped to the top of the list, and dunked a 3 pointer. The meat was so crispy but juicy and flavorful. The bed of fries beneath the largest portion of meat I've ever gotten was a perfect compliment. On the side? a lovely salad of greens, tomatoes, onions, spicy sauce, and a few other treats to go very well with the nice and warm pita. 10/10 - I am looking back to stumbling right back upon their door tomorrow night. read more

We happened upon this place walking around the mall area in Oslo. It looked authentic and there were a lot of people eating, so we looked at their plates and decided to give it a try. I have some texture issues with meat, so I'm not going to rate their chicken. It's probably fine for most people. I loved the hummus and pita, I also really enjoyed their corn side with pink dressing. It was easy enough to order and not a long wait. Clean, plenty of seating if you have around 4 in your party, didn't use the restroom so I can't rate it. It was a lot of food for the price, especially in Norway. read more

Honestly, I was looking more for a place with transportable food for my airport express train ride rather than a sit-down restaurant, and someone on the street recommended Carmel Grill. In that sense, it satisfied my needs. They offered fresh lamb, and the menu had reasonable prices unlike most things in Oslo (SUPER expensive city). They give you a large portion of food, as well. Moreover, it's a good place to get some quick Middle Eastern food when you are on the go. However, the next morning I woke up to a swollen face and eyes, meaning that the food is very salty. Make sure to drink a large amount of water if you eat here, but otherwise it's a safe bet. read more

Because of location and the flow of people the food is generally very fresh and good. For being a grill bar or what ever you may call this type of fast food establishment it is well above average compared to other like this one. Clean and very good service. read more

I'm pretty open to new food, and since Oslo is so expensive, the cheaper the better! The food here wasn't bad, however I did get a mild case of food poisoning after eating here, and I think it was due to the fact I was served Kebab that had been on the grill for a LONG time. I won't return, but in reading other reviews, this may have been a fluke! Just be aware when you visit. read more

Overall, eh. The food just didn't taste very good. I had the vegetarian plate and it didn't taste very fresh-- the falafel and fried cauliflower/mushroom seemed like they'd been sitting around for awhile, and the other parts of the dish just didn't taste great (plain corn, weird flavoring in the bulgur, boring hummus, etc). Good Buy close to Central Station! Three of us ate there for lunch yesterday and all were pleased with the meal. We got Falafel Wrap, Kebab Wrap, and the Shishkebab platter each for less than 100 NOK.. Overall, very tasty with a great helping of vegetables (lettuce, tomato, onion, corn) in the wrap or on the side. The helpings are very large, so this ends up being a good deal for quality food - particularly hard to find so close to the center of city. It's also in a very cool building - the brick semi-circle that surrounds the Domkirke The service was quick but not particularly pleasant - the main cook doesn't have a great mastery of English or a lot of patience, so we had some minor communication issues. But overall, he did accommodate for a couple of special requests (no onions, extra sauce) so no complaints. I guess I'm just getting spoiled in expecting everyone in Scandanavia to have such great English skills! Go for it. Well worth it. read more
