Illegal Burger has done some good PR. After having it pop up on my radar several times, via different style blogs, I bookmarked it for my next trip to Oslo. When that trip came I found it located a few steps from my hotel (lucky me)! They do an excellent drippy, juicy burger that's packed with flavor and not overcooked. The accompanying potato wedges are nice but may not satiate if you've been craving fries. Aioli lovers will be pleased with their offering. Skip the beer unless it's a label you recognise. Trying to be adventurous, I tried the Herslev Økologisk Hvedeøl and found it uncomfortably bubbly. I dined here with a serious beer drinker and it took him the entire length of the meal to uncomfortably stomach one bottle. But beyond the beer, Illegal Burger's a good bet. read more

We went over to Illegal Burger after landing in Oslo, and we were dying for a good meal! Our hotel was just down the street from Illegal Burger and so we decided to go give it a shot! I think everyone should make a quick stop if they are in the area! I got the Illegal Spessial - a chorizo and cheddar topped burger! This was so wonderful, with guac and other special sauces lathered upon it. I really loved this burger, and it was paired wonderfully with tiny fried potatoes! I went to go visit my brother in Oslo while he was studying abroad and we were looking for places to eat. I will admit that a burger in Norway isn't my first choice since I love to be adventurous, but food in Oslo is pretty expensive compared to what I'm used to! He raved about this place and said he takes all his friends there when they visit, so we decided to just try it out anyway. My first impression was that I loved the design. I am glad I visited illegal burger! Had heard a lot about it and it was indeed worth a visit! First of all it is fast food. So don't have expectations of a fancy type of burger. However it is a fancy fast food place, if you can say so! For example: the burgers come out in paper wrap but however on a real plate. This is the kind of balance this place has which I love as a concept!! The food was great! I had number 7 and it was not too spicy. The fries come with aioli which I love and are delicious as well. The meat is left juicy and the burger is quite balanced as a taste. The food was enough for me, although in the beginning it didn't seem like much. The beer comes from Mikeller in Denmark! Felt like home and i can't brag about mikeller in an Oslo food place's page but it was indeed really good and worth trying!! The interior and concept I loved!! You order on the counter and you wait in a line to get seated. So many people on a Tuesday evening! But luckily as it is a fast food restaurant it is not really a place to spend all your evening at. Honestly, this was a pretty disappointing experience after reading all of these amazing reviews. I suppose that relative to other burger places in Oslo, perhaps illegal burger is an exotic and interesting option. However, as far a burger quality is concerned, I would not say that illegal burger is necessarily great. More like mediocre. I ordered the Illegal Special, which had avocado and chorizo in addition to tomatoes and lettuce. I suspect that the folks in Oslo weren't actually referencing the whole immigration situation in the Southwest US when they named the place (given the 5000 mile difference) but it could be interpreted that way for better or worse. Regardless, the chorizo was chewy and there were not nearly enough avocados or salsa-like flavor to evoke a Latin America type of experience with the burger. Inconspicuous from the street and (if I am completely honest), pretty soul-less looking from the inside with an easy wipe clean floor and linoleum tables that remind my of a by-gone time at McDonalds. Don't let this fool you into thinking you are about to get a plastic bun with an even more plasticy burger, this place serves one of the best burgers I have ever eaten! It is a sizeable and hearty meal on its own, add to the mix a side of chips and aioli and you have a recipe for a full stomach and an elated palate. NB, an important point for those of you that love a beer with your burger: they serve 2 different beers there, a local and a basic one (Carlsberg I think)...if you are tempted to go local (as I was), be ready for the fizziest experience of your life. I like my beer, I pride myself on having a quick decent when it comes to having a beer with a meal...I could not finish this beer, it caused me so much gas it was painful and it took over 40 minutes to get to where I left it, even though i was actually trying really hard to finish it. It was fairly tasty, but I thought the meat wasn't that juicy or flavorful. I didn't find the toppings to be that value-adding either; I didn't think the guacamole added enough different texture or flavor, while the chorizo in the Illegal Special gave it a bit of an interesting kick, but probably something I could have done without. Yep, it rocked. Just like everyone said it would. My true love & I had the Hot Mamma Deluxe and the Blue Cheese burgers. Of course we also had the potato wedges & aioli sauce as well. All totally delicious. If I went back, I would ask for a few more jalapeños on my burger, but I like it extra zippy. With regards to the beer, some other illustrious Yelpers did not enjoy the local brew. We each had a pint of the light Frydenlund, and it was a perfect accompaniment to the burgers. This is the second time I eat here and I have made up my mind. The first time I ate a bluecheesebacon hamburger, yes that is the name all in one word, and it was good. I'm not the biggest fan of blue cheese because many can't introduce it properly in to the food. Illegal Burger did manage it fairly well I have to say, but the problem I had with that burger was that it was more salad then anything ells. I have heard rumors about this place a long time and frankly it didn't bring the WOW!-factor that I was expecting. I then decided to give this place a new chance and this time I stayed in the restaurant and ordered a complete meal. This time I ordered a Cheese Royale and some deepfried potatoe boats. To wash it all down a plain and simple coke. I got a seat fairly quickly and the food not long after. This time, knowing what to expect, I could make a proper judgment. The burgers are okey, not great. I was expecting a bit more cheese or at least a bit more cheese taste of a burger named Cheese Royale, but it was almost like a plain normal burger. Potatoes was cold (only a few of the ones at the top) and the thing that made them great was the Aioli. Really good in fact and I recommend it if you are gonna sitt there and eat. If you are unlucky the line to order can be long and the line to get a seat will be even longer. The second time I was there at a good time, not that many people but it still felt a bit crowded in there. The bar/order area is quite nice and friendly and the atmosphere can be pleasant if you don't mind it being a bit crowded at times. The waitresses was friendly and welcoming. After all the hype about Illegal burger on Yelp, I was so excited to check it out. I smiled through the 30 minute wait and sitting on the cramped uncomfortable stools. After all, its not everyday that you get a 90 nok burger in Oslo which is also supposed to be "the best in the city". I love burgers and after a long time and research had already found the best burger in Oslo (which is even better than my fave in London). But i wanted to check this out. My husband ordered the truffle burger and I ordered the Hot mama with the potato aioli. Can I just say - BOTH the burgers were horrible, tasteless and horribly made. Hot Mama was far from hot, in fact the salad inside made it cold and bland and tasteless. I had to soak it in ketchup to wash it down. HORRIBLE!!! the Truffle burger was slightly less bad than the other but horrible nonetheless. The potato wedges were pathetic, soggy and old. And the aioli was equally bad. I come from the land of a fancy burger: San Francisco. Heck, I even make a great fancy burger at home myself. I even occasionally make my own buns when I feel up to it. The mister and I had been traveling for about a month and it was time for a good burger, so I was excited to see there was supposed to be a great place in Oslo. We came on a Monday late afternoon and it was pretty crowded even then--usually a sign of a good place. We tried the Hot Mamma and the Illegal Special. We had to wait a bit to get our food, so this is also usually a good sign for a burger place. It usually means they're making it fresh. When the food came it looked great, but when you bite into it, it's a hard puck of meat with condiments that don't do anything for the overall product. I doubt the burger patty had a panade because it was so dense. It was also overcooked with no pink in the middle whatsoever. I know it can be a cultural thing not to eat meat unless it's fully cooked through, but for my taste, this was less than desirable. The two burgers were not very distinguishable from one another, which was also depressing. We like variety when we eat and somehow, these ended up being almost the same. Also, just to note, the Illegal Special has chorizo on it, but it was unlike any chorizo I've seen before. It was thinly sliced instead of a spicy sausage that I'm accustom to at home. Scene: walk in. "OMG, so many people" The place was standing room only. Then my party and I were told that we have to order and then wait 25 minutes for our food. "Wow", I exclaimed! There is a reason for this. The burgers! This place is supposed to have the best burgers in Oslo. And they are right! Burgers only get better at Pilot Butte Burger, but that is another review in another country. I ordered the GreenChiliSalsa burger (#7 on the menu) with jalapenos, which are not standard on the burger. When the burger finally arrived I must say that I thought I was at McDonalds. It was a patty and cheese between two buns. Pretty pathetic looking! A slight mix-up in the order made them think I didn't want anything on it, so it was quickly fixed and I received back a burger which was almost spicy and very flavourful. It was washed down with a glass of Frydenlund Bayer. The volumn of the music they played could have been a bit lower. It was difficult to hear the person sitting across from you without having to yell. If I want loud music I will go to a bar, not a burger cafe. I will be going back here. Gahhhh I love this place! Gluten free buns and fabulous quality meat. If only they had sweet potato fries..... Anyways we came here just as it was getting crowded. So we had to wait awhile for seating, but after you order your food you just hang around scouting out people who are finishing so you can grab a table. I wouldn't recommend coming with a large group....Once the food came I was so stoked to be eating a full burger with bun and all so I really can't complain about anything. I loved the flavors and couldn't believe how long it had taken me to go there! The only thing I wasn't to keen on was the "potato boats" I'd rather have actual fries or sweet potatoe fries. Illegal Burger -was- the undisputed best burger in Oslo for a period of time, before a major uprising of new burger joints in town make Game of Thrones look tame in comparison. I wouldn't call Illegal the best anymore, but it's still in the upper class. The first thing you notice is the overpowering smoke - not in a good way. The meat is smokey, the bread is smoked, the lettuce is smokey, and after your visit you'll feel like a beef jerky. I thought I love smoke, but this place pushed me to my limits. The meat is actually fantastic, but the smokiness did a disservice to them. The sauce might have been good? I ordered a double cheeseburger and this might be a paradox - there was too much meat (???) in comparison to the other toppings and sauces. I didn't think they balanced the proportions well, so tip: stick with single meat next time. On top of all that, the smokiness shrouds the rest of the flavors. The burger felt all meat-and-smoke, a little lacking of other personalities. Given all this, I still enjoyed my burger. Guess I'm a meat-and-smoke guy after all. We went there on a Saturday, we had to wait 10-15 min for the table and the burgers, but it was worth it. The same quality as always + great service :) The "illegal" special was very good.
